I have been playing these systems for most of my life, and it's by far my favorite gamig gen, I did extensive research to find as many hidden gems for these systems including lots of stuff that never got released in the U.S.A, but it feels like I have seen it all by now, I guess these systems are very old and well documented and researched already (except maybe for the P.C Engine?) one issue regarding the topic of hidden gems is that a game will appear in hidden gem playlists over and over again until it becomes relatively well known, a lot of what online people call "hidden gems" is not really a hidden gem.
>>12588551The only hidden gems left are on ZX Spectrum
>>125885638 bit, but you are probably right
>>12588551Time to start learning Japanese
Text based games, the most obscure genre.
>>12588936There's probably a good number of Japan-only games which are "hidden games" to a western audience, it's just that almost no western gamers would give two shits about them, even if they were translated. Like there are two Derby Stallion games which actually rank in the top 50 sellers for the system even though they were only ever released in Japan, but you would be hard pressed to find very many people in the US or Europe who would even consider playing them.
>>12588551For the SNES, I always direct people to this ranking list. I have around 300 SNES carts and thanks to this list I've found a few dozen more hidden gems I've been collecting/playing. This madlad played every SNES game and beat almost all of them, so this list is pretty legit. Only a few questionable choices overall. Hopefully you'll find a game you've never heard of in the top 200 and it'll probably be worth playing.http://snesrankings.com/homepage.html
>>12588962>http://snesrankings.com/homepage.htmlThank youuuuuuuuuu
>>12588989You're welcome. I'm also not that well versed in the TG-16 or Genesis library, but for the Genesis I always recommend Skeleton Krew, Granada and Gauntlet IV. The latter is 4 player co-op and has a banging soundtrack. Probably the best on the system. I know these are usually on hidden gem lists, but just in case if you haven't played them, check them out.
>>12588962man, it's even more impressive when you consider the fact he does not count any J.P and E.U only games
>>12589076Gauntlet isn't exactly a hidden gem. Although it is seriously fucking good and the soundtrack is Elder God tier. For the Genesis I'd say some hidden gems would be the original Star Control (everyone knows SC2 it's a legend. the original is very decent) Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday (squad based D&D tactical RPG with space exploration) and Starflight (2D Elite with mining, negotiation, space battles, awesome storyline and MINING)
>>12588551
If I haven't played them, they're new to me.
>>12588834i partially started learning English because my country started using low grade dubbers for games and movies who speak like they have pneumonia and can't act. i guess i'll do the same with Japanese but it seems like an overly complicated language, even worse than mine French
>>12588962What a useless project. I've read through 20% of the "reviews" and he admits he has barely played these games, let alone beaten them. What's the point? Might as well boot up a bunch of movies from the 90s, watch a minute before turning it off and start my own shitty blog where I pretend to be a film connoisseur. And the funny part is that this guy links his Backloggery where he marks every single game as finished. It reminds me of all the people on social media who claim to read lots of books, listen to so much music, do tons of random shit and it's just a fucking lie. I respect this man for actually trudging through 700+ SNES games but he didn't commit to it.
>>12589309It's like the SNESdrunk dude on YouTube, I am sure he spams save states to beat these games he talks about since there is no way an adult with a job can breeze through retro libraries like that
>>12589309>>12589326No the guy legit beat like 90% of the librabry. It's impressive. Also he uses real carts on the SNES. I don't know if he ever used emulators for any of these games, maybe just a few? I forget. He's like in his mid 40s and has been collecting for the SNES and working on this project for over a decade.
>>12589353I wonder if he's working through the super Famicom library right now (likely no)
>>12589361I wouldn't think so. He's just a guy who grew up with and likes the SNES, and got on the ground floor in the early 2000s when collecting for it was dirt cheap and easy. Super Famicom would require serious commitment financially if he wanted to do it the same way, and he'd have to learn a good amount of Japanese. If he did it, he probably wouldn't finish for another 10 years.Either way, as someone who also grew up with the SNES, collected in the prime time and it's my favorite console, I really appreciate what he did. This is exactly what the internet is for.
>>12589368Do you have any experience with the super Famicom Library yourself?I find it more interesting than The standard SNES library my self given that I am interested in certain genres that were not as popular in the west
>>12588551Yes if you have any interest in Japan only games
>>12588962Lovely. Thanks anon
>>12589391I don't. I barely have time to play video games, so I'm still trying to get through my SNES backlog and Switch.
Unironically start playing the Mahjong games, many of them are much better than you think.
>>12588962>I have around 300 SNES cartslegendary
>>12588551>Are there still any undiscovered hidden gems for 16 bit systems?Only if you can read moonrunes
How many good games are in total in these consoles including the japaneselibraries? There is too much shovelware, sports games and games that clone each other, albeit this is every system out there really, the ps1 and ps2 have quality and quantity at least
>>12590959>the ps1 and ps2 have quality and quantity at leastquantities of shovelware
>>12591108Any major console with a strong third party support will be a shoveware hell but the PS 1 and PS2 still had much bigger libraries than The SNES and Genesis so overall more good games if you understand what I mean, The SNES and Sega Genesis are also shovelware hells but have much smaller libraries than The PS1 and PS2 but on a third side there are consoles with quantity but little to no quality such the god forsaken Wii (not retro but you get my point) A bottomless library needs both of quality and quantity
