This'll be my first Final Fantasy, heard it's a lot shorter than a lot of the more popular ones like 3 but i'm sure it'll be a good time. What do you all like about this game? I'd like to get some opinions from other people while i'm experiencing it for myself, i'm beginning my playthrough later today.

It's mediocre, awful story, awful linear progression, the game switches your party members every 2 seconds.
People only like it because it's snesbabby first jrpg.
Even FF1 and FF2 are more interesting

Don't want to sound elitist but why have you never played FF7 ? We're supposed to be passionate about video games here

I mean it's like calling yourself a cinephile but you never watched Citizen kane,Vertigo or the Godfather

I'm a zoomer but when i discovered emulation the first games i've played were the huge classic like FF7,OOT,Mario 64 etc...

Well i'm enjoying it so far despite my miniscule progress, the story seems quite interesting from the small tidbits i've learnt.

>why have you never played FF7?
I wanted to start with one of the earlier games, if I enjoy this one i'll get around to playing it though. There isn't any sort of connected games from what I know of so i'm sure it isn't bad to start with the earlier games.

The first half's just kinda OK, but there's nice dungeons to explore in the latter half of the game that retain the classic style of battling your way through until you get exhausted and then escaping back to town with your new loot before diving back again.
imo it's more fun than 6
6's dungeons are like "walk left in a straight line on a train" "walk up in a straight line on a tower" "fight your way from one healspot to the next, no need to think about returning to town"
5 is still best FF tho

It's a great first FF. It's on the difficult side. You will need to level up before goign to new areas and bring plenty of items. It's linear and the story is meh now, but back in 1991 it was the best story ever in a video game. The soundtrack, especially the battle themes are the best in the series. There is very little extra content, and only tackle it if you really like the game after beating it. The game is half as long as the typical FF game. You'll probably beat it in 20-22 hours.

It's absolutely worth playing, and maybe the best FF to start the series with. It's just on the difficult side, which makes games like FF6,7,9,10 etc seem easy.

The actual ass Japanese release? Surprising, if true.

It’s fun and I still go back to it a lot.
I have to be honest that I think this is one of the cases where you don’t want to play the Final Fantasy 2 US version. You posted the Japanese cover so I don’t know if you are or not.
The US release cuts items and absolutes and makes the game even easier.

>It's on the difficult side
There are only two spots in the entire game that I would consider to be difficult enough that you need to grind for and they are both in the middle of the game. Those being
Baigan and the Lodestone cave

desu I'm 33 and I have played (as in completed) around 300s games looking at my library... regarding Final Fantasy, I only finished 6, 9 and 12 (this last one is a personal favorite but I know the gameplay can be divisive)... the rest bore me to tears? popular != good? I don't see how FF7 is the godfather of gaming. Even something less popular/considered worse by the Internet like Golden Sun 2: The Lost Age is way way better gameplay wise for a RPG than FF7 other than maybe battles are too easy and the script too chatty. The puzzles, the world-building, the abilities you use outside of battle to resolve the puzzles, the Zelda-like way more complex dungeons vs Final Fantasy's straight line dungeons... I even think Sakuraba > Uematsu. I don't know man, Final Fantasy seems it's all fame and normie core, but gaming wise? I think you should try other games than what the internet says is the top 10.

Haha, not for me...

Final fantasy is completely gay. All of it. It just rips off western games and puts in gay shit as well as being piss easy.

It's great. One of the top two FFs.
