Does the concept of Sonic work in the Third Dimension at all?
>>
>>12682191
No.
>>
>>12682191
I'm afraid not
>>
It looks dazzling and cool for about 15 minutes, then it hits you: Oh, I'm barely playing a game...

Yes
American STI is just retarded & Sonic Team should have made an actual Sonic action JRPG instead of making their own Mario 64.
>>
>>12682659
overrated fangame
>>
>>12682659
Unfortunately this game is now ran by the same type of idiots find running today's Sonic IP marketing wise.
The moment they put out more updates, it's going to play worse than an official Sonic game.

Literally one of top 5 best Sonic fangames though?

>>12682672
The newer team doesn't do away years of blood and sweat, even if they were to "erase" some assets because an inkbunny user (and former SEGA employee) worked on it, the mark they left will still remain.

>they’ve made like 20 3D Sonic games at this point and all but two or three were well received
Gee idk
>>
>>12682191
The main detriment is in fact the gimmick that makes the Franchise go; Sonic's speed. It works excellent in a 2D format where you can program levels that give the Hedgehog a running start to do awesome things without having to worry about those pesky problems such as aiming and aligning yourself. You can get around this in a 3D environment by completely restricting progress in a singular direction while allowing side-to-side shifting to avoid obstacles and enemies, but a full open-3D setting with 360 degrees of direction? The players by and large cannot handle any kind of speed in those directions that isn't 'Slow-mo' by Sonic's standards.
>>
Super Sami Roll proves that 3D Sonic can be done. Controls have to be extremely precise and satisfying and levels have to be obstacle course-like. That's it. That's the magic formula. Zero focus on retarded furfag stories. But Sonicfag team still can't get it right.

Does you making this gay thread here after posting the same dumb shit on /v/ make you feel entertained? How much of a loser are you that you're that starved for human interaction?

what's the definitive way to play Heroes? i never played it as a kid but now have my interest peaked. is it the GC version? i know there's also the PC version on archive.org

PC if you're not afraid of dragging and dropping patches/mods into a folder.
GameCube if you require a walled garden.

3D Sonic games can be great. the issue is not concept migration to 3D but fandom migration to 3D.
2D and 3D Sonic games play different enough that liking one does not necessarily equate liking the other.
2.5D on the other hand is a safer bet for 2D fans as long as the physics are tight.
>>
>>12682191
Barely, and it's disappointing that they didn't use what they learned during the production of NiGHTs for the 3D Sonics. That is, when you have a full 360 degrees analog motion, you shouldn't expect the player movement to be precise like with 2D games.
Sonic Adventure, both of them, are wonky and loose, and the levels have to be filled with gimmicks and autoramps to hide that fact. Why, for instance, have a group of rings arranged in a circle, that you have to collect by running into them, and not, like in NiGHTs, run AROUND them, a much easier thing to accomplish?
Same with enemies. Just like the stage gimmicks, the auto aiming jump attack is a crutch that can easily fail on you because the game thinks you want to target something else. Just have the ability to stun or defeat enemies by running around them, and make the stage design support that mechanic.
It would also help if the camera was slanted downward somewhat, at least in those areas where there are enemies and things to collect. That way you could be more precise with aiming your shadow while jumping on bonus monitors and enemies, and not have to rely on shitty jump attack.
>>
>>12682191
Yes, yes, no, no.
>>
>>12683170
so, just played an hour of heroes and...i don't know about that game.

the constant context switching between the 3 is annoying (who'da thunk?). the levels are fun but honestly i wish i could just be sonic for the entire time. i thought i'd be able to tolerate the 3 heroes shit better.

>Does the concept of Sonic work in the Third Dimension at all?
Yes but Sega has a weird aversion to just making a simple stage based 3D Sonic game without loading it down with other crap.
>Sonic Adventure 1&2
These are okay games but they are split between a bunch of different gameplay styles. If they just put all their time and resources on core Sonic levels instead of variety, I think they would have been exactly what 3D fans wanted.
>Heroes
This game suffers from trying to make use of the 3 character gimmick. They had to balance the ability to fly and kept locking you in rooms full of enemies. Also they padded out the level length a bit too much. Once again, a focus on core Sonic gameplay would save this.
>Shadow
Guns and Healthbars do not make a good Sonic game
>Sonic 06
Fuck were they smoking, also it was unfinished
>Sonic Unleashed
The boost gameplay was well received but it was 4min stages sandwiched between 20 minute sections of (not)Sonic beat em up action.
>Sonic Colors
Well received but too much 2D boost gameplay.
>Sonic Generations
Very much beloved but because they did the half classic, half modern, both halves of the game feel a bit short.
>Sonic Lost World
A good attempt but it used a new formula to try and mimic Galaxy and the controls and level design were clunky and meh. A solid 7 out of 10.
>Sonic Forces
They took Generations, split it in 3 and then made the individual stages way to short.
>Sonic Frontiers
You know, I never bothered with it, I know nothing about this game. I had no interest after the first trailer.

If you told me to lead the production of a 3D Sonic game I would either take a more polished Adventure style Sonic and make a game with 8-12 zones with 2-3 stages each or I would take the Generations boost formula and make a game with about 15 or 16 stages.
Yes I think Sonic can work in 3D, I just don't get why Sega is so allergic to making a game that is just a bunch of 3D Sonic stages with one of their proven 3D formulas.

Imagine being this much a corporate shill, not even try to guess which you're bootlicking because it's honestly doesn't matter whom.
>>
>>12682191

No, because Sonic has to be turbo charged which doesn't translate well to a 3D platformer. They would need to build something more similar to Mario, but then it wouldn't be faggy fast like Sonic.

One of the fun things about the Genesis games was zooming through a section of loops and doing maybe a jump or two at most and picking up a shitload of rings without even trying. In 3D Sonic, you now have to actually try to touch them to pick them up, and for some reason they kept the rings relatively small and easy to miss in most of the 3D games. That alone makes them less fun. It went from effortless reward, a pure dopamine rush, to now having to align Sonic to some precise pixel so you don't miss a line of rings, and then the disappointment of still missing a lot of them anyway. It's a simple thing and there are solutions but they've never actually fixed it.

Yes. Your top two images of examples of it working. The bottom two are examples of it not working.
There's also indie clones like spark 3 that have found niche success. Further proving physics based 3D sonic can work.

Sure, it's not the best 3D Sonic but it's a decent 7.5/10

I'm not being vague at all, SRB2 and SRB2 Kart both fucking suck. That's it. Stop shilling that shit already.

The jazz jackrabbit 3d bonus levels slapped and some how sonic fucks it up every time.
>>

Modern SRB2 is an abomination.
>>
>>12682191
Sonic should have always been 3D obviously. That way you can naturally incorporate 'going fast' into the levels properly and not have it being glorified on rails shit where you can only see a split second in front of you.
