Is it worth even considering an Ayn Thor if I already have two modded 3DSes?
>>
>>12730598
No because it plays DS and 3DS worse than the og hardware and has overblown colors thanks to the OLED
>>
>>12730598
I'd get a more comfortable single screen device if I were you
>>
>>12730606
Well that's disappointing but what I wanted to know thank anon.
>>12730607
Honestly I spent a sacrilegious amount of money on those official Hori grips for my New 3DS and it feels perfect but I was wondering if the Thor is worth it. I have a Steam Deck for anything non-DS/3DS
>>
>>12730614
Dual screen emulation just isn't quite there yet. Installing rocknix does help with input lag but dual booting operating systems is not stable on the Thor from my experience. The android side of the device completely broke when I tried it
>>
>>12730598
If you were thinking of it almost exclusively because of 3DS then no, 3DS emulation in general just isn't there yet.

Qualcomm already announced that they are going to increase the price of their chips in September and memory prices are still on the rise, in 6 months it's going to cost you more and there will be no Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 successor at that price point, so no, it will not be obsolete.

>within 6-12 months it is absolutely obsolete.
Completely untrue in a post AI ram/storage shortage world, also we're limited by emulation software at this point, not hardware, been that way for like 2 years.
The "flagship" handhelds are still using 4 year old SoCs that can run everything that's currently compatible with the emulators.

True. Still unmatched at $100 3 years later.
>Then the RP4P.

>Then the RPMini.
Fucked right out the gate, cost the same as the RP5 with less RAM, lacked the plastic frame around face buttons so the glass wouldn't slice them, then the screen.

I noticed this mentioned when I was checking out the details of the Gamma OS v1.4 for Anbernic RGDS.

Not "not there," it was never and never will be good for 3DS with those specs. For 3DS you're looking at $200+ for a chinkheld that can do more than like Shovel Knight or something.
>>
>>12730812
It's going to be under $100. It's basically a Pocket Air Mini with a different screen and shell. I'd rather pay $30 more than buying a fucking h700 device in 2026.

Fair, yeah this shit won't ever run even lightweight 3DS games well.
You really shouldn't be getting an RGDS for anything BUT DS games, but it's got the right specs for 4th and some 5th generation consoles.
>>
What is the point of these retroid devices when I can get a switch lite for half the price and similar performance
>>
>>12731029
Yeah I'm saying this as someone who likes the idea of the RG DS, I'd get it if I played more DS games but I don't want anyone thinking it's a 3DS replacement when not even the Thor is. That RF4 part of the ad was pretty scummy on Anbernic's part.
>>

>>
>>12731035
Why do you need a Shitch Shite? Just use your phone, honky.
>>
>>12731040
RGDS needs another revision with more suitable screens, but finding something that will scale 256x192 without specifically manufacturing them on demand seems unlikely.
>>
>>12731051
Trimui Brick Pro has a 4 inch 1024x768 screen.
>>
>>12731035
for roughly the price of a switch lite you can get an rp6 which has a 1080p oled screen, emulates everything up to ps2/gamecube with ease, and also plays switch games
>>
>>12731054
Would two of those be affordable for a budget system though?
RGDS successor needs to be a non-budget enthusiast device but I doubt they'll do that.
>>
>>12730963
I was so disappointed when this thing came out, but it looks good now.
I may grab one if they go on sale to play Pokeyman and Etrian Odyssey.

I asked about rg DS at the end of last thread, what exactly is the issue with the scalling? It's the same screen as the other 4 inch xx devices so can't you just use filters and and a shader to fix or should I say make it look better? I like the idea of having a bigger screen clamshell for the other systems as well so I'm not just planning on ds emulation, mostly ps1 and n64 but after watching the snacks and drinks man review it he mentioned that it gets warm with higher end systems

DS resolution is 256x192, most 4:3 retro handhelds are a multiple of 320x240 like 640x480 or 1280x960.

RGDS uses 640x480 panels which scales DS games 2.5x, which will look a bit fuzzy but better than any other non-integer scales (like awkward 2.333x or 2.667x scales)
1280x960 can do 5x integer scale though, the Retroid Pocket Nova uses that.
>>
>>12731123
>GDS uses 640x480 panels which scales DS games 2.5x

>>
>>12731145
yup.
dual 1024x768, which are widely available, should have been better.

>>
>>12731145
It unironically looks better than playing DS games on 3DS.
256x192 -> 320x240 is actual shit, and 1x scale looks tiny as fuck.

3DS cfw can install custom scalers for DS mode which is an improvement over the stock scaler, but it's still not good.
>>

That's fair but DS on 3DS isn't a high bar to clear

What about something to play the old stuff + PSP tops? Hopefully something that I can take to work (I have so much dead time and strong work firewalls prevent me from doing anything fun on a computer) and isn't too bulky/noticeable
>>
>>12731604
For me it's Retroid Pocket 4 Pro or Retroid Pocket Flip 2 since either fits in my pocket. Thor is more powerful than either one of those (Flip 2 is either RP4P or RP5 tier depending on which version you pick, Thor is RP6 tier iirc) so you should be fine. If you ever wonder about a chinkheld, look up videos like "[chinkheld] playing [console] games" to see how they might play some games. As far as I know though, RP4P does PSP great. Did MM Powered Up, MM Maverick Hunter X, Nayuta no Kiseki, Trails in the Sky SC, Crisis Core FF7 on it.
>>
>>12730598
If you want to play anything other than 3DS/DS, then yes.

>>12731301
Is it as bad as the Android version or is it actually on par with pcsx2?

>>12731570
From my understanding nethersx2 is a very outdated build of pcsx2, while armsx2 is built on top of the latest version of pcsx2.
>>
>>12731575
Actually this reminds me to ask, he was using a shader to account for the Nova having a 1280x960 screen which doesn't accommodate a perfect integer scale of the 256x224 resolution of the SNES, but a 5x scale comes pretty close at 1280x1120. With that plus overscan you lose only about 1/7th of the image vertically, and nothing horizontally; obviously still not ideal, but games of the era were designed for CRTs where overscan was normal (see: devs avoided placing UI elements near the top and bottom of the screen since they'd often be cut-off on a consumer TV set) so the experience will be more than playable, at worst you may need to fiddle with the emulator's Y-axis offset so the image is centred properly.

Is he not aware of all this, or is this not common knowledge? The video presented it as if you had to use shaders to compensate for it or simply live with any non-integer scaling artifacts.
>>
>>12731570
I've been trying out armsx2 lately, it works pretty well and has nice qol/features over nether. Nether is more stable/better with the games I tried overall, the armsx2 dev just added support for nether/aether save states so it's easier to try it now than ever. But if you're only looking for one ps2 emulator then nether is still better imo.
>>
>>12730670
are handhelds even going obsolete anymore, the bottleneck are the dogshit android emulators not the hardware

>>12731604

I bought the Thor as my first Android handheld after using a few of the budget Linux emulation handhelds for about two years. I also have a New 3DS XL as well as a DSi XL. I honestly bought it more for having a guide/video/keyboard/whatever on a second screen while I game more than anything. I also just like clamshells because they're self-protecting and I don't have to worry about throwing it in a bag. I do play DS/3DS on it and it's great, especially for games with HD texture packs like DQ8 and games that don't require constant and precise touch in general. Even for games that do require that, I feel like the drama is a little overblown unless you're a serious rhythm gamer or something. I played Trauma Center 1 on my Thor with a Nintendo Switch stylus and I performed about the same as I do on my DSi XL, probably even a little better as the DSi's digitizer continues to age.

However, it's not my main focus and I will still use my 3DS more often than not for those games, especially since 3DS emulation is still not all the way there yet even on high-end handhelds. I actually played Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon on my 3DS about a month ago because that's an example of a game that still evades emulation. Outside of DS/3DS, it also plays everything up to a majority of Switch games great, though I already have a Switch Lite that I play a lot of my Switch games on instead. You can see the pattern here, and the big question you need to ask yourself is how married you are to the devices you already own. It's one thing to play home console stuff like PS2 on an emulation handheld because the convenience of being portable already makes up for whatever input lag or inaccuracies you may encounter, but if the devices you already own are modded and are portable to begin with, it starts to look more redundant. Is this going to be a replacement for old hardware, or just a way to play some games where accuracy doesn't matter much at 4x scaling and with save states?

For everything else, I admit the second screen is a novelty that wears off unless you remind yourself to use it for things. If you don't have something up on the second screen, it's going to monitor your FPS and thermals at best and at worst it becomes something to accidentally touch with your fingers and un-focus the primary screen and disable the controls until you touch the screen your game is on again. I can't tell you how many times I've been reading something and press B thinking the game is in focus and I close a tab in Chrome. Also, since all of these devices use Android, there probably isn't anything stopping you from just swiping out of a game and freezing it to open your web browser to check something for a second and then swipe back into the game on single-screen devices.

Aside from that, it's still a powerful Android handheld with great build quality and controls (except for the short triggers which can be annoying for some people) and a big OLED screen that most things in this range have, everything else is up to preference. The clamshell form factor might be uncomfortable for you and not as ergonomic as a standard single-screen horizontal device, or you might prefer a symmetrical stick layout vs. the Xbox controller layout, things like that are worth considering. I can recommend the Thor, it's a device I really like and plays everything I would ever want to emulate more than fine, but I feel like you wouldn't miss out terribly if you got any other Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 device or higher, especially something cheaper and more readily available as you can expect to wait 6 to 10+ weeks for your Thor order and AYN continues to raise the prices every batch. Some recommendations are the Odin 2 Portal and the Retroid Pocket 6 or Nova. You could even go for something with a weaker chip like the Retroid Pocket 5 or Flip if you don't care about Switch.
>>
>>12732028
I feel like the second screen is really only useful for DS games and a majority of the good games on DS you can just turn off the second screen on a non dual screen handheld until you need to use the inventory, and at that point why not just get a Portal
>>
>>12732038
It's a good point. I'm personally a stickler for keeping the second screen on whenever possible, but if the emulation for 3DS is not at the same level as something like Dolphin and accuracy will be bottlenecked by Android and modern touch screen technology for the time being anyways, you might as well play in the form factor you want. I think the Thor is more than good enough for most DS games but nothing I'd sell my original hardware for yet.

I already have a more powerful single screen handheld so I only really need it for 3DS.
I guess it's better to wait for news about Retroid dual screen device at this point.

You should wait just in case they fix some of the ergonomics and stuff, but I doubt it's going to be much more powerful.
Knowing Retroid it's just going to be an 8 gen 2 again, but a bit cheaper than the Thor.
The problem with 3DS emulation is more on the software side.

not making the buttons membrane was a huge missed opportunity, it could have been the near perfect h700 crackcel, instead it's unplayable e-waste

My Odin 2 Max is still seeing frequent daily use after almost 2 years. It still works great (besides the fucking annoying as shit ghost touch issue), even the battery is still pretty good. That being said, looking at RAM and chip prices, I am getting paranoid about this thing breaking because I'd be SOL in terms of replacing it. Should I get a backup handheld now before prices get even worse than they are currently? If so what device? All it needs is to flip all the way to the back so you can just carry it around ready like that without having the pad disconnected in your pocket.
Aside from that, it looks pretty good for stick-less gaming.
Knowing 8bitdo, that's probably the plan for the next iteration already.

Speaking of, I'm trying to decide on another purchase I'll grow to regret.
What's the best pocketable handheld that can run Portmaster games, and has two sticks? It's kind of hard to tell how big something will feel when you're just looking at it on a screen, even with reference points.
>>
>>12734042
Best is hard to say. Miyoo flip V2 finally fixed its hinges for realzies and I think it's pretty pocketable for portmaster. I'm considering the ayaneo pocket micro 2 myself though because it has rescinded sticks.
>>
>>12734046
that pocket micro 2 looks almost perfect, but the price pretty much killed it for me.
I can't even imagine how uncomfortable it would be to use all of the controls on the Miyoo Flip.
I don't even know why I'm looking for something new. I've already got a very well preserved 2ds xl, and an RG35XXSP as well as two other non-pocketable gaming handhelds and a PC.
>>
Tell me why I shouldn't buy the Retroid Pocket Nova(Peak)?
>>
>>12734076
If you want it and can afford it, buy it
>>
>>12734075
Being able to just slide a device in your pocket as your daily carry instead of always taking a small bag with you feels pretty satisfying. Miyoo is surprisingly comfy and feels like any other dual stick vert.
>>
What's the absolute smallest handheld you know of? I know about the rg-nano which is the size of a ds screen, the gkd pixel 2 which is barely bigger but notable for emulating some ds, psp and dreamcast game relatively correctly. But is there any console even smaller? Not counting actual consoles (gba micro, pokemon mini) or 100-in-1 garbage of course.

The last thing I want is to put pressure on my USB-C port. Also no joysticks? Who is this for? Can't be the poor since it's USB-C and likely cost 40 bucks, can't be the rich since it's kinda shitty and doesn't have joysticks. I guess if you want to play exclusively pre-n64 consoles, it's okay. This comes out about 4 years too early for the European USB-C directive to have a noticeable effect.

Sometimes the vibration and sounds that play while you are navigating the grid will stop working and I'll have to reset cocoon for them to come back.

GC would be good if you could neuter the shittles, but that's not possible here.
16-bit is great, if lacking a bit of dark grey on the shoulders to offset that tan. DMG buttons as alternative.
Crystal looks okay, but will yellow out.
Ice Blue looks okay, if you don't mind it being green.
Watermelon looks great, but I don't like staring at red handhelds.

What's even more bizarre is that it does that to my 3 xbox controllers and on all my devices, exactly the same way.

what game has this ever effected you in? I beat all 4 mega Man zero games and never noticed. those are the hardest games for GBA. This is not a fighting game device.
>>
What should I get if I want to play the entire ps2 library smoothly at the cheapest cost? Like the cheapest device where I can get max fps on every ps2 game. Idgaf about anything else. Form factor, bells and whistles, I just want a portable ps2. What should I get?
>>
>>12738763
Retroid Pocket 4 Pro and RP5 will play 95% of the PS2 library full speed at 720p.
>>
>>12738759
>those are the hardest games for GBA
I can easily debunk this unless you mean hard mode specifically. My evidence is that I suck at games but I beat all the MMZ games.
>>
>>12738763
>smoothly
A PC. But RP4P like anon said is the cheapest option. No you will not get every single game at max even at just 1x res but it plays gen 6 admirably along with some Switch and Wii, as well as being a decent android games device. Stinkers include Nightshade which is unplayably slow and Xenosaga 3 which stutters a bit and has some crushed sound effects. RP5 is a bit better at least but of course costs more.
>>
>>12738776
So what's harder then? I also beat contra 3 on it. Haven't done Makaimura 3 I guess, but that's slower paced.
>>
>>12737339
34xx has an overall good feeling dpad but the performance is hampered by a pivot thats too short and bad contact shape. I posted the fix earlier ITT.
You can fix performance but you cannot fix the shape or feel of a dpad. Those flat dogshit pads that most chink companies use have no hope of redemption

Is the Retroid Pocket Classic the best Gameboy/GBC/WS handheld?
>>
>>12739046
by what metric
also no, not by any metric you can cook up
>>
>>12738763
Bad news, you're fuck out of luck. They're all bulky or expensive, often both. You won't find one that can run 70% of ps2 games for less than $200. The pocket 4 pro that was mentioned can run only vaguely 70% of ps2 games and sadly a ton of good games are in the 30% it can't run acceptably (or at all). If you gonna spent $300 for a handheld to play ps2 games, you may as well just buy a mid-range phone with a bluetooth controller, it will likely cost you less than that and be easier to carry. Or just straight up a cheap laptop since you gonna be carrying a bag either way.
There is just no way around it. Handheld companies simply don't have the resources to compete with phone companies at that power scale. They can compete on lower scales like the ps1.
Ps2 emulation is still fairly young.
>>
it isn't even like there's more than a handful of games on ps2 worth playing anyways

The metrics I care about are comfort, portability, screen (as close to OG aspect ratio), battery life, and price in that order, with the first three sharing equal weightage

You can say the same about quite literally every single console. Having played hundreds of games from each of the gen1-gen5 consoles, 95% of the games suck ass on each of them. Literal unplayable dogshit on the level of a random ass Flash Player game from 2005.

Wonderswan is also a 14:9 system. So between the aspect ratio and refresh rate, probably the best fit for that is the RG34XX. Except for Tate mode games, for which you'd be better off looking elsewhere. Unless you're willing to use Start and Select as your face buttons because you're a crazy person.

Why does PS1/N64/Saturn and under look better at native res with a crt shader, but PS2/GC/Dreamcast look better upscaled with no shader?
You know what I mean?
>>
>>12740540
Well, those later systems had higher fidelity graphics and can get away with being upscaled without sacrificing much image quality. For Dreamcast specifically it already had native VGA output meaning you could get a clean sharp look even back then. In my personal opinion though PS2 games look like shit when not played on a CRT or smaller screen. Lots of jaggies and blurry textures
>>
>>12740540
All 3D games look better upscaled. You need a shader N64 though because the textures are fucking ugly. PS1 you can take it or leave it.

Anyone who has a Thor, what exactly is the experience with the thermals/fan for idle and DS/3DS play?
Asking because where I try to look I find people generally seem to have the fan active at all times - and also because they take up the bottom screen nobody has their performance metrics visible for them.
It confuses me because I have a phone with the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, and it stays completely cool to the touch for DS emulation and gets warmer for higher internal resolution 3DS play - but still never gets actually hot like other demanding android apps would quickly do to it.

I want one, but not if the thermals are somehow shit enough to require fan noise or a heat situation for DS/3DS.

>>
>>12740540
This depends on the game and your taste. A lot of PS1-era games were deliberately designed with the idea that they'll run on a CRT display, so they'd look better with shaders. But I absolutely disagree N64 looks better at native res considering it upscales nicely compared to PS1 which has polygon artifacting.

I don't know why people are trolling you, but the fans basically never kick in unless you are playing Switch or PC games.
Fans stay at 20% for most games up to PS2/GC, and they are silent at that speed unless you put your ear up to the vent.
Only part of the device that gets noticeably warmer is the top right corner of the bottom screen.
