The "problematic" words aren't even included in the translation pool. It perfectly enforces postmodern woke orthodoxy: everything is a they/them, anything romantic is reworded in "inclusive" ways just in case a speaker is a fag or tranny, slurs never get their actual equivalent. And then if you add "make it based" in the prompt it just post-edits added bullshit, just like persona 3/4 purged the actual honorifics then an editor added other honorifics back based of vibes and feels NOT what the jp text said. Even an N5 can notice the gulf between the original text and the translation (official loc or AI) with the missing "unimportant details" (which are the entire point behind fan translations, and if they're missing i might as well ocr+mtl longplay the game, or play it in japanese, or accept an official localization equally dismissive of these "details" and just as brazen with sentence cuts - which vibecoded ai patches love to do)

>>
>>12734687
This one came and went last week without fanfare, I don't think anyone from the grifter circle cares that much about this or Tilk or its sequel or the other obscure ps1 stuff.

A more apt candidate for the grifter bait patch would be the SMT2 PS1 ai translation that released recently. The game has a ton of human translated script and decades of version comparison autism and discussions tearing into those translations and fixing them, and the ai faggot just heard about the ongoing ps1 translation and available documentation and just threw together an ai/mtl patch that proclaims "it respects the official Atlus USA localization", which is so hilariously detached from reality or what fans of these games expect and an obvious non-fan latching on some big name game.
>>
>>12734758
Idk but this one is episodic, you might be confusing it with the OTHER ps1 jp only game about detectives in london, but that one was in (gorgeously stylized) 3d and had like 2 episodes that feel like 30% of a game, admittedly a very good 30%. That one did have unfulfilled sequel baiting for sure but idk about this one.

What's really funny is that the problem this forum post is describing, the text boxes being too wide after the font was made narrower, is a problem the SEGAGAGA patch has. Unlike this project, where the team behind the patch cared enough to fix the issue, the SEGAGAGA team just left it, so all the text boxes are 30% empty space. It looks hideous, and every second text box requires scrolling when 99% of them would have fit without it had just fixed the issue. When people start arguing about how good or not good AI is at translating, they miss the real problem, which is that people who use AI are lazy and would rather take shortcuts than do things properly.

SEGAGAGA is legendary for being so poorly coded that it took 20 years for people to get English text working in the game without constant crashes. Group after group have been trying since 2005 to hack the text. What we got in the fan translation is legitimately the best anyone's been able to do without destroying the stability of the game. It's not lack of care. They just can't.

Same reason people finally gave up and translated the Super Famicom backport of Tokimeki instead of the real version. The games houses of cards that collapse if you touch any part of them.

>SEGAGAGA is legendary for being so poorly coded that it took 20 years for people to get English text working in the game without constant crashes. Group after group have been trying since 2005 to hack the text.
What people? What groups? Who? Not a vague notion of "this game seems popular, so someone must have tried it," but what human beings sat down and actually tried to hack these games?

You have to understand the nature of ROM hacking. Having one highly skilled person who knows what they're doing is infinitely more valuable than having 100 clueless fans who want a project to exist but don't have any useful skills for making it happen. This is why uber obscure games almost no one cares about receive translations before games that are highly sought after. What games get translated and which don't is entirely at the whims of the autists (using that word affectionately) who put the hours in. If no one who has the skills to do a project wants to work on that project, it doesn't get done.
>>
>>12735469
(2/2)
The real reason it took almost 30 years for Tokimeki Memorial to be translated isn't because hacking Tokimeki Memorial is SOOO much more complicated than every other game in existence. It's because dating sims aren't popular in the ROM hacking scene and no one with the requisite skills wanted to work on it. Look though old forum posts. Can you find any evidence for the claim
>The games houses of cards that collapse if you touch any part of them.
I can't. Every post talking about hacking Tokimeki Memorial is either from some clueless outsider who has never hacked a game in their life, or from someone mentioning the game in passing. There is zero serious discussion by competent ROM hackers anywhere talking about wanting to hack Tokimeki Memorial and not being able to.

Do you know the real reason the SNES version of Tokimeki Memorial was translated? It's because the guy who did the hacking, DDSTranslation, only works on NES and SNES games. That's it. That's the reason. It had nothing to do with how comparatively easy or difficult that version is to hack. It's because one guy has an affinity for the SNES. If DDS liked the PC Engine, he would have done the PC Engine version.

Just think about how ridiculous what you are saying is. The ROM hacking scene in current year is so sophisticated that hackers are able to reverse engineer games back to a human readable C code base that can be ported to entirely different platforms, and you're telling me it's impossible to expand a textbox in SEGAGAGA? It's not about what is possible and what isn't. It's about how much effort one is willing to put forth.

DDS is a hacker, not a translator. He has nothing to do with the ongoing Tokimeki Memorial 2 translation. You're thinking of Tom, who only does translating, not technical work. A completely different person is doing the ROM hacking. And no, I'm not wrong. Look at all of the credits DDS has on romhack.ing and tell me what the common thread across these games is.

The Segagaga ai patch, like many similar patches, just took an mtl/ai approximate translation with none of the jokes (in a joke game) and made up LLM hallucinations when it doesn't get a reference, and further *deleted* huge parts of it instead of doing a proper job, and called it a day.

This isn't new per se. Translations that discard 50% of the text exist, see Secret of Mana or the old Metal Gear versions.

The difference is that the consensus in the gaming community past and present is that those translations are considered
>bad
but the Actually Indian consensus is that they're considered
>smart
>perfect
>the best
>avoid waste of time and effort
of course with some of the usual misdirection (like how fan translators must pay for the sins of official localizations, or the comparison collages that take "fan vs official" and replace it with "ai vs human"). If you have a problem with the quality then the problem is You, never the complete lack of ethics the author has when presenting/describing his work. The solution is then to redefine quality, beauty, taste, creative works, and an entire world and lowering standards so hard that a stinking piece of poo spawned by a low iq mongrel with premeditated scammer instincts is a passing grade.

Prove it. You can't. You're regurgitating something you've heard other people say and internalized as being true without ever having properly investigated yourself.

There actually was a serious attempt at translation and hacking Tokimeki Memorial that failed. It was by J2E in the early 2000s. You can still find their old project files on Data Crystal. They had text insertion working, and they had almost 50% of the game's enormous 950,000 character script translated. They couldn't get it over the finish line. The irony is that they were hacking the SNES version. There has been more failed attempts at hacking Tokimemo on the SNES than any other platform. If anything, that bodes to it being harder to hack, does it not?
>>
>>12735620

>>12735618

>>
>>12735620
NTA but the TokiMemo games were infamous for being technical messes with code and text mixed
Instead of dealing with that, DDS expanded the ROM past normal commercial snes cart limits (in fact it doesn't emulate well on older emus) and slapped the huge script in the extra space, and barely entangled the original mess just enough to fetch the new text. It's way easier to do this on the snes than on disc based systems, and decent emulators with debuggers for the ss/ps1 weren't a thing yet (that and dds didn't mod anything else)

>>12735597
There's more evidence to support the translations were done via edited MTL and then later looked over by someone with JP knowledge than by LLMs. I couldn't find any patterns of hallucination, personally, rajeesh.
>>
>>12735630
What does the quantity of tools for hacking SNES games have to do with the difficulty of hacking non-SNES games? The point I'm making is that when people talk about how certain games are impossible to hack, almost without fail, they are talking out of their ass. Had they put more time and effort into their project, the SEGAGAGA team could have fixed the textbox issue. They chose not to, and I'm sick of people defending low effort hacks under the guise of some mystical spaghetti code shield that only seems to exist in vague forum posts.

I get it. These projects take a long time. Sometimes you have to make small compromises to get things done in a reasonable amount of time. But having every textbox in the game be 30% empty space is not a small compromise. That is a massive issue. The hack clearly wasn't release ready, but they shipped it anyway.

>>12735652
no$psx is almost 14 years old. People have been hacking PlayStation games for a long time. I have nothing against DDS or his hack of Tokimeki Memorial. In fact, I enjoy it quite a lot. The point I was making about Tokimemo is that everyone acts like it's some mystical, impossible to hack game, yet there is zero evidence of this claim. Everyone parrots the myth that it's impossible to hack solely because they hear other people say it and it sounds reasonable. In reality, the reason ~forever with you~ hasn't been hacked is due to lack of interest from relevant parties.

Normal fan translation patches do that and correctly at that, it's not even that uncommon - Hilltop's Kowloon Gate did that for the chinese squiggles on some compass and it wasn't merely replacements but overlays
Even budget localizations used to do it

What's this participation troophy bullshit for texture replacement with stock windows fonts and no context checks

How long is this game?
>>
>>12741384
See? This is the problem. If an patch doesn't use AI, it's now automatically quality to you. If the patch did use it, then it's slop.
>>
>>12742337
If the patch uses AI, it's (one) red flag out of many.

I can then expect the author used it for some reason, and then investigate that reason. Why was it used for translation? Does the author "value his time too much" to translate a story literal children could read effortlessly? Or was the author unable to do that much?
What are the implications? What else wasn't worthy of his "precious time"? What else is missing that he so aggressively tries to hide with the constant deflections, refusal to talk about the process, an increasingly obvious realisation he actually *didn't care* about doing a proper job? Why the constant version updates with weird insistence that it's totally playable? Why is there a patch update in the next version that says "oh basic menus finally work now and the crash in the mandatory boss fight 2 hours in is finally fixed" when the previous version was "100% playable and complete"? Was the patch even tested at all? Couldn't the author even be bothered to do something as easy as PLAY the game like any player could do?
If the AI was used for "proofreading" then what makes a translation considered "proofread" and "done"? What's the criteria? What's the win state? Does it care about converting all of the original message? Then why does it omit and make up stuff so much just like an official localization? Isn't the translation job to get those details right? Why is it okay for this patch to drop that the instant it conflicts with when the author "doesn't want to waste his time" with "unnecessary work"?
If it was just for the coding, is the author actually able to fix bugs that are always caused by changing code? Or will the project be abandoned and told to deal with it?
>>
>>12742478
What if we play the patch and find bugs and issues with the translated text? Aren't we as the players ruining our first playthrough with spoilers and participating for free in a beta test we didn't sign for? Not everyone wants to play a beta, everyone has the right to know ahead of time whether they're playing a finished game, a beta, a proof of concept, a virus... they NEED that info and they have the RIGHT to have their preference.
When these bugs are reported, why are the players met with gaslighting that these are non-issues? Why is the author obsessed with attacking the very idea that
>better translations exist
>you can do better
>this is bad
>this can be fixed
and more obsessed with preserving his honor (izzat) ? Why is there a patch update then days later that only changes the bugs in the social media screenshots and not the remaining 99% of the patch? Is it really out of a genuine desire to improve the patch or just to get to say "you're lying, this line isn't in the patch"? Is that any way to treat playtesters? Do you even care about playtesting?

Actually, does the author know what the fuck he's even doing? Does he even care about this game? Does he even have IQ higher than room temperature? Why do I have to deal with him? Aren't I better than him? Why is it MY problem that he doesn't WANT to "waste his time" with "unnecessary stuff" that MY time and pastime will be worse off for? Human translations at least have the courtesy some standards if quality were followed before release to avoid exactly this, and are routinely roasted whenever they cut corners or don't care about the player. So why is it not only "fine" but the "expectation" you MUST cut corners and you MUST accept low standards permanently with NO WAY TO FILTER patches by quality?

Why should we protect this hellscape where AI low effort patches are handed participation trophies for work that would be a 2/10 if the patch was released as "human fan patch" or "localization"?
>>
>>12742480
The real answer is that you're just an indian tranny madly in love with AI, and all of your acts are motivated by that, and that the word "quality" is just an expletive for you (in the sense it has no meaning and you throw it whenever wherever, or in the sense it's your kryptonite)

In the face of that love, you want all preexisting standards, preferences, quality, expectations, player rights... to collapse just so that your blatant low effort is either the only alternative or called "the best thing"

But that's so disgustingly egoistical and self-centered about the author's needs and no one else's, and so reminiscent of the quality AND attitude of other (human) bad translations released before by assholes who think they're god's gift to earth, but now with a strong indian accent (the false advertising! the low iq! the vindictive drama! the even lower depths of depravity and low quality! gaslighting the customer! trying to give less and get more! the scamming! the disrespect! the enshittification!)

that the normal individual reaction to your propaganda is abject disgust.

Machine translation, now as easy as a hotkey in a screen overlay compatible not only with emulators but any apps, but also dictionary tools for learning new languages, are accessible enough to make *your* ai patches obsolete.
>>
>>12742478

>>
>>12745580
>EDC/ECC bugs
That's the redundant data added to PS1 games just in case the disc is scratched, so that it corrects the game. Since it's not updated here that means the game is trying to restore the japanese data if any slight disc read error happens.

Emulators don't have this issue I think, if you don't mind the real hw compatibility you can play romhacks like the valkyrie profile ps1 one disc romhack also with this "quirk"

The other bug is legit

>Emulators don't have this issue I think
They do, I remember this being a big issue with the patch for Internal Section. Patch came in three pieces (One translates the health and safety warning splash screen, one translates the menus, and the last one removes the icon that let you load your own music CD, I see zero reason to use that last one) and you can choose which ones you do or do not want to apply, but while it worked fine on older emulators, on newer and more accurate emulators the more patches I applied the glitchier the graphics got until it would not boot up at all, I recall one emulator was even giving read error codes. Had to use a tool that would re-calculate the error correction data to make it work properly.

These are the two big ones, although there were a LOT of smaller groups attempting to pick it up in between. Most faded into obscurity after a couple months, once they realized it was harder than expected. Several of which were also centered on Dreamcast-talk.

>>
>>12746501
If you dig through the open source attempt, people eventually get to the same stage and realize what happened: It's not hard to get decent-looking single-width text to display in the game. Doing so just nukes the stability of the game and causes a ton of seemingly unrelated crashes.

So the big translation project likely got to the point where they could add text like that, but couldn't fix the constant crashing that came with it and gave up.

>but couldn't fix the constant crashing that came with it and gave up.

The ai patch used the same approach as the 2011 version beta. Say the japanese game uses 16 characters per line, and each character is a texture. The English characters are smaller, because the game needs to have more text for the translation to make sense. Here they relied on a half width font that got them up to 32 characters. But the game then loads twice as much textures, and it's never meant to do that. That's where the "instability" comes from when it eventually needs those textures or when the english extra data corrupts the memory.
That's not a new problem. In fact, very old translation mods for the ps1 dealt with that exact same issue just fine.
The problem with the new segagaga ai patch was that they never considered it an issue that they're translating with half the normal english character limit (as observable in social media character limits between jp and english). The quality of the text simply didn't matter for the authors, they could just delete and mutilate any message that didn't fit. That's not something you can fix with any expertise or tool, that's a mindset problem that shit work is ok. The exact same mindset as pic related in official localizations, with the same attitude and same end result.
>>
>>12748125
Or...because trying to add all that text will just make the game crash on emulation or legitimate hardware. Just saying
>>
>>12749558
No, proper translation projects (official or not) from after 1998 will at the bare minimum make sure the code is stable enough to show a x2 long english sentence in all situations, and it has been the case for every major translation project from 1998 - 2020. And that x2 english sentence will be the shortest literal equivalent. A "Yes/No" choice shouldn't crash the game just because "Yes" is one extra letter from Japanese.

If a translation project can't do that much then by definition it's poorly coded AND has a shit translation script AND the developers blatantly don't care, which is cause for concern not praise.

First of all, no point, it's still being updated every few days to fix bugs. If you got a pre-patched game now it would likely be outdated in a few days and have softlock bugs.

Second, are people even here of all places that incapable of patching a game themselves? 99% of modern game patches are literally loading up either Flips or DeltaPatcher depending what format the patch is in, selecting the patch, selecting the game, then clicking patch. That's it! It's three steps! It literally takes more effort and steps to setup whatever emulator you are going to use or to burn it to a disk to play on real hardware than patching it yourself! Yes, even if you just downloaded install_PS1_emulator.exe and just mashed "Next" until it was installed, that's STILL more steps and effort than patching it yourself.

You don't have to deal with all sorts of crap like back in the old days where you had to do all sorts of manual shit to patch a game, you don't even need to worry about having the wrong version of the game anymore because on top of the fact that nowadays we have no-intro and redump sets that are one consistent verified set rather than hunting down random dumps that were of who knows what quality from random angelfire sites, newsgroups, and FTPs, but modern patch formats that everyone with a brain releases the hacks in like bps or xdelta have built-in CRC checking to warn you if you the game image you are trying to patch does not match.

Are you seriously incapable of doing something as simple as picrel?

Nah, if it's done by human hand then it's a good beginning. Now, the question is whenever it's a good translation or a "troonslation".
AI shouldn't ever be used - unless as a help in translating some kanji you're not familiar with or using it to modify a texture which needs to have translated text on it. Sure, you can still just use a dictionary for the first case and edit it in yourself in the second case. In a perfect situation, AI wouldn't be used. Or, rather, an LLM. It's still too far from the real thing to call it "AI". It's more of a marketing description.
I could ONLY stomach an AI patch if it included all the necessary busywork, like textboxes etc PLUS was capable of translating properly even the most difficult jargon/puns. If translator notes are needed, that's fine, it can be put in the game as some references and puns, especially for 80's stuff (or in general) requires knowledge of that source material. If the output is just as if an actual, skilled human translator would do, then it's viable. Until then, it's pretty capable but not yet viable, especially for long scripts like in JRPGs.

That's Humanity since always. Do you know how many, currently extremely famous, painters ended up dead with barely a peńny to their souls, being largely ignored during life? That's until some artsy faggots made them famous by presenting their works in their galleries and doing the usual marketer speech? Observe how successful they were in their endeavor, selling works bought cheaply at now incredibly raised price. Price gouging goes to this day, whether it's a painting, music or a game. There always were vultures making a BANK from impoverished authors. Or selling something at 100x its original worth, as we can see today, for example with old TVs or video games. Whatever it is, if you can sell it well, it will sell.
