What is (generally) your favorite RPG class or subclass and why?

Me personally I enjoy the versatility and style of mages and magic users, though I don't mind other classes as they can be just as cool/useful.

But mage/sorcerers have got to be my favorite.

Wow, what an original thread. Great pic, too.

I love how this is the new "look how cool I am, I don't even give my images real names" poseur tactic. What a joke this kid is.
>>
I like when you can mix freely between the two. I lean heavily towards magic users but want to incorporate some kind of fighting/thieving skills in between. D&D rules and elder scrolls games facilitate this the best imho.
>>
>>3883841
Blasters. Warlocks, Kineticists, Creators, Elemental Bombers, Ice Orb Sorceresses, Prismatic Spray Embermages... the kind. Feels great to refine the main damage mechanic through synergies and enjoy overcoming seemingly difficuilt obstacles like Spwan of Rovagug or Shadow King through sheer number stacking..
>>
>>3883841
Human, standard fighter class or standard mage class.
Depends on how retarded or tiresome the games' magic shit is.
Subclasses is for nerds that like to collect cards
>>
>>3883966
Not real D&D. nuD&D takes out the glory of limitation and rigid frames.
>>
>>3883973
You can multi/duoclass in aD&D

Healer or some kind of caster.
I am a man, but a soft one.
>>
>>3883841
Pure warrior, pure mage, or pure thief
>>
>>3883841
Mage-Rogue archetype,Psionic, Occultist(especially if lovecraft flavored) or a Support class that leans into magic.
>>
Whatever is closest to "regular dude with a sword".
>>
Paladin.
bonus points if there’s no Paladin class and I have to make up my own
>>
>>3883841
When/if I can ever find them done in a way I find satisfactory, I like fencer dodge-tank types especially when there is some sort of riposte ability.
Magic is alright but I wish there were more games without it.
>>
>>3883841
Blue mages or any class that requires you to do some specific quest or crafting to improve their skills.
>>
>>3883841
Shifter. It's fun to collect shapes and turn into whatever suits the situation.
>>
>>3883841
As a kid/teen who was introverted and in my little frame of mind unique and slightly above average in intelligence, I always played mages for the power and because Gandalf was awesome.

Now, as an old man I prefer hybrid classes the most, or paladins when I can.
>>
>>3883841
Fighter or Monk. I like hitting things hard, simple as. Doing it with your bare hands is cool.

Mage is great, but it really depends on the game. When you have a variety of spells with interesting effects, then I love Mages.
>>
>>3883983
>Mage-Rogue archetype
Way too few of these.
>>
>>3883841
I enjoy playing a white mans class. Anything that summons niggers to do the work for me.
>>
>>3883841
My favorites are the two extremes.

Gish:
Yeah I can cast spells and fight. Giga-Chad best at everything. I was just born superior.

Monk:
Spells? Weapons? Who the fuck needs those? I have perfected myself through the sheer power of will and have risen above your petty world of "magic".
>>
>>3883983
>Support class
Those are cool but only in multiplayer for me
I don't like supporting NPCs

But supporting people is fun
Makes me feel like the grown-up who took the kids to the park, so they can play while I keep them safe

I enjoy sneaking around and pulling out my pud at grocery stores. Sometimes I wiggle it around. So naturally I play thieves.

>>
>>3883841
All classes are basically fighter (close melee) or mage (range spell). All other classes are derivation and that's boring imho. There should be actual talker classes or acrobats or whatever.
>>
>>3883841
I'm on the same boat with the mage class. Don't get me wrong I love hitting enemies with a big ass sword but I love just desintegrating whichever npc annoys me

I'll go for an assassin, so long as you're not forced to be an edgelord wearing gay fetish black leather bodysuits. Robes are good, just regular unassuming clothes are great, but I'll be fucked before I wear a "look at me I'm an assassin" gimp costume in the middle of a city. I particularly like that Lucien has stubble to show that he's just some fuckin guy doing doing assassinations. Cults in general are better when the bulk of them is a bunch of random assholes joining them for the perks and the money, and are not all spooky edgy clean shaven masters of the occult. The wet dream is having a faction of, if not good, then at least lawful neutral assassins who work in service of the king or whatever, secret service types. And fuck dual wielding too unless you need to fight someone head on, then it's a sword main-hand and a parrying dagger in the other.
If not, I'll go for plate and sword & board I guess.
>>
>>3883978
Why did you use "but" there?
>>
>>3884205
Which games don't have them?
>>
>>3886253
You'd like the spy / assassin village in Dragon's Dogma 2.
>>
>>3883841
I like martial classes with magic, but I don't like it when they *cast* regular magic. Being a fighter with some wizard spells is boring as sin, I like it when they have a magic gimmick instead, like spellblades imbuing spells directly into their weapons or having a teleporting martial etc. The exception for me is FF red mages, but they still typically get a few unique spells and doublecasting.

TL;DR give me gimmicks on my guy with a sword.
>>
>>3886257
>Dragon's Dogma 2
Game looks a bit flashy for my taste but I'll check it out when I have the time, thanks
>>
>>3886265
As a bonus answer: I would love for an RPG to give me a dedicated shapeshifting class. I'm so completely sick of spellcasters being the designated shapeshifters because it means that all the forms have to be balanced around also having access to spell, so it's either dogshit to compensate for spells, or it's not dogshit and the class is broken because they get both spells and cool shapeshifting.

Altered Beast on the genesis captures the feeling better than every iteration of druid I've played both in actuall TTRPGs and video game RPGs

fighter, human, male, white, mail armor, longsword - maybe a crossbow to spice things up.
The idea of being a mook going against magical witchcraft is appealing.

Pillars you can make a serviceable riposte rogue off-tank.
>>
>>3884205
They don't work right in most crpg since there's nearly always a better fighter / mage combination.

You're rarely allowed to be creative enough to do a true rogue/mage playstyle.
PF Arcane Trickster is a cut above but also kind of not since it's just to give you a "backstab fireball" or scorching ray with extra sneak damage die.

A true rogue mage should be filling a hall with illusions and backstabbing that way, or setting up elaborate intricate area traps with telekinetic manipulation and such, more ninja style trickery, less brute force in other words. Skyrim sadly enough has it done better than many here with illusion spells and paralysis and working light system with backstabs albeit a crude one.

>>3884303
Cleric is still the original and best out of the box gish.

>>3886265
BG3 is pretty amazing for gishes, 6 eldritch knight , 5 cleric of your choice for example, I prefer Light
Spirit guardian buzzsaw on top of dual wielding light of lathander and another good cleric mace plus helm of arcane synergy is pretty kino for me right now.
Beats a paladin or palasorc gish to me since you can still get the pure higher rank cleric spells this way and you mixed in the useful low level arcane melee spells like booming blade and movement stuff, shield too.
Not gimmicky enough? How about some extra divine guardians and weapons helping you out, or blow up the battlefield with the light version of a super fireball that only targets enemies.
>>
>>3886823
>Spirit guardian
Casting haste on this fucker let's him move around
>>
Rogue/Thief

>sneaking is fun
>need one to open locks/chests and check for traps
>backstabs do great damage

Every now and then I get tricked into thinking I'm actually a bigger fan of two-hand warriors, but every game I try to make one they end up being little bitches that can't do shit. Rogues are just too useful.
>>
>>3886823
>Cleric is still the original and best out of the box gish.
This is offensively wrong. A cleric is categorically not a "gish". A gish is a fighter/mage multiclass specific to the githyanki race.
>paladin or palasorc gish
Oh God, it gets even worse.
>>
>>3886892
Cleric bard fighter rogue gith?
>>
>>3883841
>Cleric is still the original and best out of the box gish.
Who said we were talking about DnD?
And even if we were you are still wrong.

And clerics are fucking gay, sucking some deity's cock for magic.
I do not bow to God.
I am God.

Especially in DnD like settings which is very much possible to attain divinity, you have to be a total complete loser to bow to a God.
>>
>>3886892
He is not wrong faggot.
Gish originally meant a githyanki fighter mage, but has since changed meaning and means anyone who casts and fights.

Words can change meaning you know?

Listen here, you fucking bundle of sticks, I am aware that people misuse the term gish. You are not telling me anything new. I am stating that they are wrong, and are misusing the term. You citing examples of people misusing the term is not refuting what I am saying, it is providing more examples of the phenomenon I am describing.
>>
>>3886928
You don't get how language works do you?
It doesn't matter if people are "misusing" the term.
Whatever the majority decides is correct.
There are no "rules"
E.g.
>awful
meant awe-inspiring. people "misusing" it turned it to very bad
>terrific
Originally meant “causing terror.” Misusing it turned it to excellent
>guy
From grotesque Guy Fawkes effigies, turned into man

>meat
Originally meant any kind of food in general. Now means animal flesh.

etc etc etc

half the words you are using are a product of "misuse"
yet if you go on calling awe-inspiring things awful, because you insist that it is being misused, nobody will understand you and you are the idiot
>>
>>3886930
Just because terms with time gain different referents does not mean that words cannot be used incorrectly fucking dimwit
>>
>>3883841
Mage, specifically leaning support or utility caster.
Strictly speaking, not healing, but it is a useful thing to add, that usually has overlap with the role anyways.

What brand of support or utility varies a lot, but that's part of the fun, usually. The value from a role like this almost always depends very, very heavily on context and what's actually good in the game..

Personally i have always liked summoner classes, but they are better in tabletop that in videogames, that way i can personalize them totally, like summoning a wyrm of brimstone or an ancient totem boar of iron or stuff like that
>>
I like wizards, especially something themed around lightning or teleportation
A well implemented thief can be cool too
