Please tell me this gets better. What's with the obsession with making normal enemies so hard?
>>
FFXIII had the right idea healing your party for free after every battle. At least then you can still make some progress barely squeaking by.
>>
>>3988082
That's even worse, normal battles become either pointlessly easy or long boringly repetitive bosses. The point of normal battles is that you can easily win each but not without draining resources, which means they can be cumulatively hard. Having the party heal after every battle also takes that away.
>>
>>3988078
DQ1-3 make it work
yes even with the retard prince dying all the time
>>
>He's having a hard time with the overworld fights in DQ8
Jesus christ dude lmao.
>>
>>3988201
>just started the game
>no spells
>no abilities
>no aoe
>can only attack, defend and psyche up, the latter of which just wastes turns at this point
>encounter 4 bunicorns
Skill doesn't make much difference here, it's about praying that the RNG doesn't give you a shitty encounter. Not all of us are lucky enough to get slimes.
>>
>>3988205
You can also run from encounters that are too tough for you(the bunicorns aren't you're just a retard who doesn't know how to use healing items apparently)
>>
>>3988240
>use healing items
I hoard healing items, I don't use them.
>>
I'd pay to watch a zoomer try to play Wizardry

Dumbest thing is that the first boss was so piss easy in comparison. All he's got was this curse ability, what's the strategy even? Just don't Psyche Up with Yangus? If I died a dozen times against normal encounters but zero against bosses, there's some balancing issues.
>>
>don't use resources the game has on offer
>know they exist, but actively choose not to use them because reasons
>have a more difficult time
>this is the game's fault
Morons like this are why they make modern games piss easy.
>>
>>3988304
The worst part is it's not like DQ8 is even particularly hard. Outside of the midgame boss and some bad instadeath rolls there's 0 reason you should ever game over.
>>
>>3988205
So here's plan.....
Hero
>put all your stats into swords and bravery
Yangus
>Axes and compassion
>Jessica
Magic and Sexiness

It's not that hard, keep your shit healed, level up and you will be alright.
>>
>>3988078
>too hard
it's really not, you just forgot to buy new weapons and equipment at the latest available town. That alone makes a massive difference.
The only two really difficult points in the game are the Dhoulmagus fight and the final boss. Dhoulmagus in particular was so brutal for my underleveled ass I just assumed he was a scripted-loss kinda battle. Mfw dying to him sent me back to the title screen and not some story cutscene like I thought.
>>
>>3988346
Since then does dying in a Dragon Quest game ever send you to the title screen?
You just get warped into the last town and lose a bit of money.
>>
>>3988205
Bro I played that game on PSX back in the day - no problem completing it besides a few tough boss fights I had to grind a bit for.

I played it again on my 3DS two different times and once more had ZERO issue anywhere besides maybe one boss fight but since I had already played the game I knew what to expect so essentially no true issues.

I know everybody is different, and maybe you ARE rolling some bad RNG but I can't fathom making a thread to complain about the beginning of Dragon Quest VIII. Make sure you search everything, equip stuff and buy the best gear you can, and distribute your points properly. Swords for hero work fine, but anything will ultimately work in the end.

Stick with it, it's one of the best JRPGs, and my personal favorite Dragon Quest. And that means something because I'm awesome and know what the fuck I'm talking about.
>>
>>3988409
To be fair, it's gotten much easier after I got the heal spell and I think exploring the huge overworld might have overleveled me. Still, it can be pretty frustrating when the game throws 5 enemies at me at once, which I think is forcing me to use boomerangs since I have no other AoEs.
>>
>>3988422
Ah you got hit by big groups solo? That explains your frustration. Boomerangs are given to you at the times they are for a reason - the game absolutely nudges you to use them because they really help out. It's so satisfying when you get good with boomerangs, though I always gravitate towards swords ultimately. Lances are good for metal slime hunting later but you don't need that for awhile.

Are you playing 3DS? There's a lot of extra content in that version which is why I wound up playing it twice over even after beating the original on PSX back in the day. The game is so good either way.

Did you play DQXI? If not play that one after this. Actually, IX is also really good if you have a 3DS and want to buy it, or just emulate it and experience it. The only big issue I have with all the 3DS titles now is that the e-shop shut down you can't play all the DLC and do the extra stuff... it's really fucking annoying.
>>
Don't know how you'd die on the 3DS version. lmao. What I do on either version is try to make 420 for the boomerang. Just switch to a sword during important fights.
>>
>>3988443
>Boomerangs are given to you at the times they are for a reason - the game absolutely nudges you to use them because they really help out
Yeah, it seems like it. It's just that I've been putting points into sword and bravery for a while so I feel like suddenly switching to boomerang betrays my build. Also, I thought eventually I'm going to get a mage like Jessica soon and they usually have good AoEs.
>Are you playing 3DS?
PS2
>Did you play DQXI? If not play that one after this.
I'll think about it, as of right now, the only other DQ game I've been playing is DQ5. I've got a lot of games on my backlog at the moment so maybe one day I'll get to DQ11.
>>
>>3988343
Bait post.
>Hero
Put everything into Courage and then eventually into whatever weapon you want, preferably not Fisticuffs or Boomerangs
>Yangus
Fisticuffs until Thin Air, then Axes until Helm Splitter, then do what you want it doesn't matter anymore
>Jessica
Staffs and Fisticuffs for Magic Burst. Focus on Staffs first. If you feel like gambling a lot in midgame you can put in 23 to Whips for TDL.
>Angelo
Staff until you get Oomph, then Charisma until you get Divine Intervention, then do whatever you want.
>>
>>3988497
>preferably not Fisticuffs
you put some points in fisicuffs to get Defending Champion
>>
>>3988512
I feel like defending champion is a meme. There's almost no time you should be defending with the Hero, early game he's one of your better damage dealers and late game he's by far your best healer, and if he's not healing he should be psyching up to add some additional damage to Yangus while Jessica gets yoked.
>>
>>3988497
Most 100 skill point unlocks suck. Only Jessica has anything worth talking about with Kazing/Magic Burst/Hustle Dance (if you dont want to make the sage's stone).
>>
>>3988530
Hustle Dance isn't worth it at all. You don't get it until about the same time as Angelo gets Multiheal, and Jessica is such a good buffer/damage dealer that she shouldn't be focusing on healing. For the Sages Stone I really think the 1 you find is all you need.
>>
>>3988078
It does get much better. DQVIII is rough on the resources early on but by the time you have a full party it's much more standard.
>>
>>3988409
>Bro I played that game on PSX back in the day
>DQ8
No you didn’t.
>>
>>3988304
>Morons like this are why they make modern games piss easy.
Old games aren't hard, you were a child and just remember them being hard because you were young and inexperienced.
>>3988385
XI has a difficulty mutator that sends you to the title screen if the protag dies
>>
>>3988533
>Focusing on healing
No. Its a utility move that she keeps in her backpocket. Its still better than most of the shit that you get at 100 even if you're better off getting Kazing/Magic Burst. If it was 3DS you could consider memeing it up with Icicle Dirk + Sudden Death but this is a PS2 thread so.
>>
>>3988627
I don't recall saying old games were hard. You know that yourself, after all, you posted the line.
Got some projecting you want off your chest?

early on you are suposed to stick to the main road. monsters on high places or deep in the forest will be stronger. this isnt explained but basically in all the 2d games the encounter rate goes higher in areas like mountais, desserts, and forests. also monsters will be stronger at night so watch out for that.
>>
>>3988810
>this isnt explained
This is in fact explicitly explained by Trode the first time you exit Farebury.

Are you retards able to breathe without instruction?
The worst cope is
>You have to grind
No, you don't. You just have to not be a mouth breathing retard to win the children's video game. Maybe that's the issue, this game was made for kids in a 100+ IQ nation, not a rainbow nation of 70 IQ sub-humans.
>>
>>3988810
>monsters on high places or deep in the forest will be stronger
>this isnt explained
seems like basic common sense
>>
>>3988810
>monsters on high places
>stronger
That explains a lot since I usually like to go to hilltops to have a good vantage point for treasure chests.
>>
>>3988447
>Hero
I make sure to account for getting up to Lightning Thrust in Spear for late game reasons, rest into Courage and Sword. Boomerang and Fisticuffs are a trap. I use Boomerangs a lot, but you don't really need points in it to kill groups.
>Yangus
You want to get Execution in Axe for late game reasons again. I think a lot of the rest is personal preference. I like maxing out scythe.and getting about halfway up Humanity.
>Jessica
Staffs is necessary for magic, it's good to get whip for Twin Dragon Lash. Rest is mostly personal preference.
>Angelo
Staff you want to again max out. I like to do Bow since it's a unique weapon and you won't be competing with hero for swords. Mostly personal preference otherwise.

The big thing is to make sure you get the critical attacks in spear and axe for late game. It can be a real pain if you are trying to level those late.
