Hello. That's a reasonable suggestion.
I currently treat the changelog just as a checklist for fixes and features. Small bugfixes, etc. increment the alpha part of the patch version.
The topmost entry is the "dev version", and once the changes pile high enough I increment the numeric part and announce a new update.
I personally prefer to let fixes/features stack so players won't have to redownload the mod every time I make a small change. But as you said, this does make it difficult to see what changed between patches.
Your changelog format with markdown definitely looks cleaner and easier to understand. I'll see if I can do something similar.

It's literally 1 (one) fetch quest to the neighbouring planet for a single mcguffin, nets you 2 unique carrier officers and one advanced fighter wing, without any further explanation.
Then you just have three single events where you can recruit 2 captains and 1 admin. (Admin costs 2.5x more than normal, but allows you to turn ruins into AI defence fleet, +1 production for all industries or alpha core factory)
Other than that it's just grinding rep (rs helps a lot here) with admins until they offer you their turbo capitals for 60.000.000.
You also have to be commissioned to them which is a pain.
Their giftshop where you sell planet survey data for colony items and unique ships is nice tho.

The large mounts allow it to fight most cruisers favourably and it can even hold against some capitals for a long time due to its very strong shield.

Made a couple of the classic faction mods, tried the first (or second can't remember) gameplay conversion, varyasector. dunno if he was a troon but he was a commie and very trollish about it.
Problem was that he's a real schizo of the "incoherent ranting" type and he got more and more unhinged as time went by. He would have been banned desu but people pitied him since he was basically one the community darlings.
In the end the problem solved itself, he just fell into inactivity.

NGO would probably still be around, right before the drama exploded I remember there being some talk about Ahne giving the mod over to be maintained, there was even some redesigned sprites and stuff floating around before it was nuked. So if no drama, it would still be around, maybe as barebones as the bootleg, but maybe with some new stuff, i honestly forget who was planning to take over.
Another reason why NGO sticks around is that it has a cool striking style, yes i know it's from another game, but still it hits the sweet spot of DA, SCY, and BRD, of being sufficently different but still feeling like starsector without just being kitbashed or "hey its hegi... but blue." Compare it to other nazi mod, or the dozens of shitbash factions, NGO ships look 2x better.

NGO was good for the standards of the time it was made.
It's just a faction mod, with no major gimmicks to it, but it has a cohesive style that is both unique enough and fitting to the setting.

its nothing but turrets with no alternate sprite for hardpoint mounts
Which I guess is fair since every NGO ship is nothing but turrets but you can put those weapons on non NGO ships too which makes them look stupid when placed on hardpoints

Their ship sprites are really cool to shitbash with
especially when you do it on DME ships since it makes Soren seethe

Factions you're just better off browsing on your own, the big good ones are the same as they've been for years.
Advanced Gunnery is really a must have, so much control to make the AI better.

Yes, game runs way better.
It also has its own separate launcher so you can go back at any moment.
Earlier versions had compatibility issues with some mods but I haven't had any with the latest verion.
Java 24 does have one annoying issue: sometimes when you launch the game it will immediately crash with an error about loading some files. If you try to launch it again, it will crash. It will do this 4 to 20 times. Then it will launch and work perfectly.

It has a lot of content.
The Academy research is cool and gives you some special weapons for your faction.
The detachments would be neat if they weren't bugged to shit.
The artillery is interesting and does make some vanilla markets a bit harder to attack.
Pets are shit.
Academies are a fine little bit of QoL.
Exploration content is fine, nothing incredible.
The governments... you're probably only going to use the default and maybe the rural one on food planets.
The terraforming is far inferior to DiY planets.

The combat AI has gotten a significant downgrade since old versions (1 star system era).
Old AI was way better with positioning, exploiting shield arcs, ganging up on enemy ships, shield flickering, decisiveness.

Outside of combat the game has gotten better, bigger.
Exploration and colonies did not exist, factions were barebones.
But I wish we could just get the old combat AI back in, it could do things like kill an Onslaught in a fast frigate because it took shield and weapon arcs into account.
New AI does take shield arcs into accounts (not sure if it cares about weapon arcs) but it feels like it forgets every several seconds.
