The game is still active playerbase wise. Blizzard did officially cut off support for the game though, only new patches will be community made patches(they let the community dicate balance stuff now, idk how it works though). The tournament scene is getting smaller because of this, but there's still tournies going on.
I'm guessing either Blizzard is gonna announce starcraft 3 and they're putting resources into that or they're retarded and just gonna waste the starcraft ip because they can't make good games anymore and know they can't top starcraft 2
