I finished the second book recently, it was a very good book and the ending satisfied me more than the first one, its on the level of the first one in my opinion, I know its shorter but its like an extra book to complete the first one and they go well together.

We had a pretty good Dune thread that ran last Sep through Dec. Definitely check it out. I dumped everything I had into that one and I'm just not ready to repost that much again so soon:

I could have written this summary. Especially what a hack and whore Brian Herbert turned out to be. His "additions" to the Dune saga are a desecration and the Bene Gesserit would have found a way to keep him alive for 25,000 years inside a nerve induction pain box for what he's done. With any luck, in a few thousand years the Bene Gesserit will rise, remember intimately and directly who & what Brian Herbert is, grow a ghola of him in an axolotl tank, and lock that ghola into a nerve induction coffin until the Honored Matres return and achieve enlightenment.

My other take on it is that Heretics of Dune & Chapterhouse Dune are somewhat better than that review gives them credit for. But, I will concede that God Emperor is arguably the crowning work of the series.

The same way that Messiah was an Epilogue of sorts to Dune, Children of Dune is something of a Prologue for God Emperor. So, conceptually, you can divide the series into three main parts where the first two books are one story, the second two books are another story that is a sequel to the first, then the final two books are the finale to what the God Emperor was trying to achieve. They each have their own merits and flaws, but I never try to say one part is clearly better than the others ... just different and focused on different aspects of the Golden Path.

how weird does it get in 3? the second book was very weird compared to the first one and I guess Frank Herbert would keep weirding it out.

looks like Brian really butchered the series. the second book does feel like one with the first, it also feel like a separate book because the characters are more developed and grown up and also because things get way weirder than the first book.

>how weird does it get in 3?
Well, uhm, trying to avoid spoilers? Can't do it.

This is a "spoiler"
transforming a human into an immortal sandworm (mostly) who then becomes a literal god, who is the central figure for God Emperor of Dune
. So, there is that. Paul's son Leto II is kind of central to the whole Golden Path thing.

And, while people like to bash a bit on Heretics/Chapterhouse, that's when some of the truly weird gets uncorked. Pretty chaotic to follow, so speed reading those is not recommended. And, a few months after reading them, re-read them slowly again to pick up on all the shit you missed the first time through. That applies to the whole series, but Heretics/Chapterhouse has a lot of content packed into it, so it's tough to hold it all in your head at once, especially while collating it against the first two parts of the series.

One of the great joys of reading Frank Herbert novels and stories is that most of them get better upon re-reading.

you mean an acid trip of a movie that would have been only vaguely reminiscent of the actual book by Frank Herbert?

The only good thing that came out of Jodorowsky's Dune is the concept art for the Xenomorph in Alien, and Jodorowsky himself is a walking block of salt over the fact that he didn't get to make his movie, and about to get BTFO'd by Denis.
>>
>>7728595
thank you for this anon. I got entirely engulfed in the Dune books at the start of quarantine last year and steamrolled through books 1-4. After God Emperor though I lost interest in the rest of the books, mostly because just how much of a perfect end it was to everything. I could not imagine just how it could possibly go on. There was nothing else to add. I mustered enough willpower to try and start Heretics but I just dropped it after the first 20 pages. I felt a bit guilty for not pushing through and reading till book 6, but this actually proves I made the right decision.

I have read every single one of these books and enjoyed them all.
They are fun and have lots of new characters and a revisiting of many of the classics
They dont take long to read and i found them to be exciting.
I think he carried on his fathers name very well.
I am glad that he has written so many novels. They have given me many hours of enjoyment.

There is a movie that i watched half asleep, interupted with dreams about it, so i have this feverish personal version of this movie and refuse to watch the movie correctly. I read only the 3 books of dune. This was years ago so mb i will re reread the whole thing... "Whole"

I feel you. I'm a Golden Path fag myself. I made and effort too back in the day to push through Heretics, but dropped it because it feels redundant, pointless, kinda out of place. Like a reboot of the saga.

>>
>>7736178
That reminds me more of that level from Jet Force Gemini were you had to go all the way through a lava worm.
>>
>>7737216
I'd urge you to finish Mr. Robot though. I feel that the quality is surprisingly consistent throughout all its seasons, but it's the twists that made S01 such a solid watch. S02's twists are amazing too but sometimes the wild gets a bit too crazy. The final season and especially the end may not rub everyone the right way but I liked it.

As for stopping at book 3: I would also urge you to work your way through to God Emperor. If it's been years since you read Children though I'd recommend re-reading from that point at least, then jump directly into God Emperor. You wont regret it.

Trying to go for Option 4 here but, must ask, Do any of the 'books' in Option 5 deals with said cliffhanger?
>>
>>7738532
Glad to hear it. Small caveat with what I said though: what I said is true if you like philosophy, history, and the like.
>>
>>7738570
The entire dune series is virtually unfinished due to Frank Herbert dying of cancer before he could finish the series. This does not change the fact that the original dune series is excellent and definitely worth the read.

Frank Herbert's son attempts to conclude the series with two more books after chapterhouse but they are awful. Definitely not worth worth reading.
>>
>>7738591
do I have to read something before? I know that frank is an environmentalist and probably the philosophy is about that and also about state craft and utopia.
>>
>>7738765
Probably not, but ofc I don't have an exhaustive knowledge of your educational background. If you come across something you don't know, just Google it. Your enjoyment of the book shouldn't be interfered with for the most part.

But he isn't...
>>

>do I have to read something before?
Short answer: No.

However ......

Frank Herbert was a sociologist. A sociologist that views survival of humankind as a positive thing quickly becomes an environmentalist. Frank Herbert was drawn into environmental topics for this reason, but it was never his first calling.

> "have to"
> "read something"
Pretty strong language , and somewhat overly broad. You don't "have to" anything. Also, "something" is pretty fucking vague.

It will help you greatly if you're fairly well-read on some of the more intellectually engaging science fiction themes. Frank Herbert did not write pulp sci fi. On that note, it will also help greatly if you are interested in high caliber head food from your science fiction. Classic heavyweights like Clarke, Asimov, Brin, Cherryh, Simak, etc.

If by "something" you meant other Frank Herbert, then No. Most everyone gets introduced to Frank Herbert through Dune. Nothing else he wrote really prepares you for this work, or is in any way a predecessor. Novels such as The Santaroga Barrier, The Jesus Incident, The Godmakers, and The Dosadi Experiment would introduce you to a number of elements & themes encountered in Dune ... but you might as well just jump off into Dune.

If you're looking for an academic background, general string knowledge in sciences and in psychology help, but you don't require university degrees in those topics. Part of Herbert's genius was being able to write highly accessible stories (usually) that relied on his in-depth knowledge in those fields, but readers could have a far more casual familiarity.

What you "need" is imagination and an intellect that likes to be challenged. Don't be afraid to read slowly and take the time to let your mind wander as you encounter the landscape he presents. His stories are designed to encourage the reader to daydream on many aspects and implications of story elements. It's really the entire point of his stories.

That's really sad. If he left hings in a cliffhanger in the sixth book, he must had something really big in mind for the seventh book.

Currently reading Heretics. This is a bummer, I was hoping that Hunters + Sandworms of Dune worth be slightly worth reading at all since they're supposed to be what 'finishes the story'.
>>
>>7740183
>slightly worth reading
This might be the operative adjective & phrase. Each person who reads these books gets their own mileage out of them. I think that people (myself included) are trying to be careful about recommending anything after God Emperor. Rather than oversell what comes after, lowering expectations may help lower disappointment, also.

Personally, I felt that the ending of Chapterhouse was as complete as the series needed. It's open-ended enough to reflect the infinite spirit of the Golden Path, but has enough resolution that most questions raised by these first six books feel pretty fully answered.

So, it sounds like your expectations are set sufficiently low. Maybe you'll get more out of it than some of us who hoped for and expected something more. I'll be interested in your reaction at the end of Chapterhouse and, if you continue, I'll also be interested if you have the same experience switching from Frank Herbert's style over to Brian Herbert's. I think we've piled on him hard enough I don't need to add at this point, other than to note that there's a clear difference and that Frank > Brian.

This thread still has a bit of life left in it, so it should still be around and still being monitored by the time you get to whatever point you decide to stop. And there's always >>>/lit/catalog. If you browse the /cat/ there for a month or two, bound to be a thread or two where discussion about Dune crops up.

I've always loved Dune and have reread all of Frank's original series more than once. I should have been the perfect target audience for his son's books but fuck are they awful . I got through one and a half of "Dune for Dummies" and had to bail. It's a shame.

it's really more easily readable compared to the original books, imo it's the story that's the matter.
The first one is really cool in that regard, with unexpected and interesting stuff, but the last is absurd and just exploiting stupidity after stupidity.

Was the return of thinking machines something Frank had planned? Were his notes on the seventh book ever released?
>>
>>7759444
good to know you enjoyed it, I heard some people didn't like it and I was scared to read a 600 page book for nothing. I really liked Messiah which people didn't like too maybe I will like the third
>>
>>7759784
If you really liked Messiah you will certainly enjoy Children.

Not sure where I saw this but lowkey there's an option 2.5, I think Children is a good place to stop if you don't go on with 4 since it was originally a trilogy.

Isn't the Golden Path mentioned in Children though, as something Paul could see,,but didn't have the guts to go for?
>>
>>7761320
Yeah for sure thats true. Stopping after Children means you miss out on the seeing the golden path but you do get the end of Paul's story.

In books 5 and 6 the descendants of the people who have gone into the unknown space are starting to return en masse. It's implied that they are running from something.
In books 7 and 8, which were based on Frank Herbert's notes on the unfinished final book, it's revealed that it's the machines that survived the Butlerian Jihad.

what the philosphy in the fourth book is about? the environment and utopia?

I think it's less about environment than the others, and looks more at religion and humanity. Should've paid more attention when I read it tho lol

what is this supposed to represent? arrakeen during messiah and children?

This guide is absolutely spot-on, and fair warning to anyone entering into the Dune universe. Brian Herbert's whoring out of his father's legacy is craven disrespectful and disgusting.

>>7728365
>>7767260
>what is this supposed to represent?
Some "artists" fantasy fanfic "inspired by" the idea of Dune.. Almost every single aspect of it violates the description of Arrakeen as provided by Frank Herbert. It's such a horribad "interpretation" that it seems likely the "artist" never read the books. And, it would more likely be an "interpretation" prior to Paul blowing the Shield Wall up with the family atomics.

Pro-hint: Arrakeen had to be hidden inside the Shield Wall to protect it from the storms that continuously ravaged Dune like monster sand hurricanes. Any buildings on the top of the wall would be destroyed within very short order. The worms of Dune were the second or third most deadly thing about the planet, after the storms and lack of surface water.

there isn't a major drop in quality after god emperor if anything they're better than children or messiah

I can STRONGLY reccomend the dune boardgame to everyone.
It's dune the boardgame not dune empire or whatever else the new one is.

It's a old school classic that has stuck around since the books were made for a good reason: It's fucking great. And it sticks to books really well.
Everyone has base set of rules but each faction breaks the rules ridiculously. Starting from spacing guild getting paid for everyone shipping shit to dune, emperor getting paid for the live auction of cards, artreides being only faction who knows what's on those cards everyone bids on, harkkonnen being harkkonene etc.

IT's an insanely good game and even my friends who were into lame shit like unstable series love it and can't stop playing it.
Dune boardgame is the dune of boardgames.

Someone needs to edit the pic to include The Dune Encyclopedia in option 4. While it wasn't considered canon, it was a good way to expand the universe, and had Herbert's blessing.
