>Do you also hoard wallpaper you never use?
Shit tons. In just the folders I've found on my external drive labelled "wallpaper" or "backgrounds" there's about 3,000. That's not counting folders like "021jpg" (and a couple hundred other folders like it) where I know there are several, and folders with no discernible theme where I keep all the other things I hoard, like the ISO for a Linux distro I used almost 15 years ago and an employee handbook from a company I worked for 5 years ago.
>ITT: random wallapers and share your hoarding techniques on acquiring and folder organisation
Have a designated folder and dump them in there
>>

I hoard them and i use them. I use a program called "variety" available on most - if not all - linux distro's.
Hoarded like 850.000+ wallpapers this way

from here (4chan, several boards) i Use the old DownThemAll browser addon.

Images from Wikipedia i use Imker for that

From other sites i use Ripme, available on github

Yes I do. I have folders 2021-08 ... 2021-07 ... 2011-08 with my hauls of that month. Not every month has a haul because my paper frenzies come and go, but every haul is generally in its correct folder. The folders are pruned using rmlint, retaining older versions of duplicates and retaining the newer ones. Recently I started using digikam and computing similarity between pics to find duplicates in scaled versions.

Here is a pic from 2011-09.

The problem I had with categories is that I didn't have a good answer for walls that fit multiple categories.

For example, you have folders for People, Animals, and Nature.
What do you do for walls with both people and animals? Or people in nature? Or people and animals in nature?

Maybe you could choose based off whichever feature you consider to be the "focus," or have certain categories overrule others (Animals designation takes precedence over People designation), but neither solution felt good enough for me.

I remember looking into that. Do you use it for anything other than finding duplicates?

Personally I just save them for inspiration. I haven't changed my wallpaper in something like 5 years, and I'm not really all that into wallpaper "culture" in terms of collecting and actually using them.
This is just a nice board to get artistic inspiration for stuff. Which is useful as an artist, since you can't just stay in your own little bubble. To be a good artist you need to look at art from all kinds of places, not just the stuff you're into.

/wg/ is good for that.

I don't really organize my wallpapers, but I have a folder for ~16:9 wallpapers and and ~4:3 ones, in case I actually commit to the idea for having a secondary monitor in 4:3.

I like to rename my papes to reflect either the location where it was taken, or the title + artist/photographer depending on the photo.

If I can't find anything to properly name the file, I just give the pape a filename I think suits best.

For my main folder, I just use windows to change my wallpaper daily.

I have about 40GB+ of wallpapers saved over the years.

I used to use a program called Picasa which was absolutely phenomenal because you could tag images with multiple tags instead of being forced to sort them into strict categories. Eventually Google killed off Picasa so I went back to folders.

Images I download go into a folder called 'unsorted'. Every once in a while on a rainy day I'll sit down and go through that folder and reorganize them into the correct categories. This is pretty tedious and probably my least favorite part of the hobby.

Maybe one day I'll spring for an Adobe Lightroom subscription or something. If anyone has good suggestion for other image management software I'm all ears.

I have two folders, ~/Nextcloud/Pictures/Wallpapers, and ~/Pictures/Wallpapers (and phone versions thereof). The one in my Nextcloud folder gets everything, unsorted. The one in Pictures gets symlinks to the files in the Nextcloud folder and I have XFCE4 set to rotate through images in that folder, so I can filter out ones I don't want to show, but in general, it's on permanent shuffle.

Do you guys ever use a "temporary" folder? Somewhere to dump papes and once you have a few you organize them properly.
I've used a folder called "Unsorted" for a while but the more folders I create the harder it is to find this specific one.
I've tought about adding a dot at the start of the filename so it shows up at the top but that's how pCloud hides folders, and an underscore looks a bit weird. What do you use?

I second this. I don't use any of my wallpapers, I just like hoarding a gigantic collection of them. I use Hydrus, it's FAR superior to a folder organizing system, especially when you have a huge collection. My database currently has just under 2000 wallpapers in it. I particularly love it because it uses a tagging system, so I don't have to decide whether something fits more in one category or another. I can search for "space" "photo" images, or "location:asia" "architecture", or whatever combination I want. You set up your own tagging schema so it can be as simple or complicated as you want. Hydrus is a godsend.

I've tried hydrus and it's okay. The only thing I don't like is that you either have everything duplicated or your normal folder structure is removed. I still need a rather simple folder structure for actually setting wallpapers etc.

You could use any photo editing / organization software for the simple purpose of tagging images. Those programs also won't copy / change anything on the filesystem.

Currently testing out digikam and it's great so far.

Man, I've been dying to share that might care.

You know those windows 10 lock screen wallpapers that get cycled through every couple of days or so? Whelp, those are saved locally on your machine for a short period of time, but they're just stored as generic files (no hint is given to the OS that they're png or jpg).

For a while, I'd just manually copy and add the file extension, but then I realized I could automate this quite easily. So I wrote a program that copies the files into a directory that's easy to access and adds appends a ".png".

After that I took the executable and put it in the startup folder, so every time I logged into my user account on my laptop, the program would run and grab some new pictures.

Well anyways, over the course of about a semester, I gathered roughly 300+ unique high quality desktop wallpapers in both landscape and portrait modes.

i dont know how i would manage it, but id wanna make it the kind of website where you can put a footprint down; maybe add some nice little check-in book or something on the side, maybe allow people to also draw a 1x1 sketch or something? just a nice little site :)

I save everything in one folder which I have set up as a slideshow so my desktop wallpaper changes every 30 min.
I currently have ~3k wallpapers.
I use a program called visipics to remove duplicates.
>>
Sad news, unfortunately lost all my wallpapers as my main drive sudoku'd. like many here i just throw what i like into a folder then set the background to change every minute

scraping both /w/ and /wg/ atm at around 39k pictures atm, then to sort by resolution use a duplicate finder to shrink it a bunch and find what i like and resize any if needed

>>holy shit someone magnet me a /w/ batch gonna suck to find all the nice ones again

Loving this thread.

Really curious about everyone's process.

I used to just leave one picture as a wallpaper for months, then 4 or 5 years ago decided to start having multiple on rotation on laptop and phone for the sake of variety. I remembered 4chan had a /wg/ board. So, every other month I come here and get almost everything, my wallpaper folder now has something like 8000 images.

This is how I usually do it:

1. Open every single thread in a new tab.

2. Expand all images in a single thread with a Firefox add-on.

3. Download page in a "PENDING" folder.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for every thread until completion.

5. After finishing with the entire catalog I start curation.

6. Inside "PENDING" I delete the HTML as well as every file that is not an image and the thumbnails.

7. Check wallpapers one by one, thread by thread and delete the ones that I don't like, move the ones I do to its corresponding final folder, either pc or mobile. This takes days and I do it in my spare time.

8. Mobile folder is synchronized with Google drive.

9. If an image needs tilting, cropping or some other form of editing (usually OC threads) I use Polarr Photo Editor or Lightroom.

10. After selection is done I open "Duplicate Photos Finder" and delete the lesser duplicate, It's not perfect but has worked great so far.

I downloaded Adobe Bridge yesterday to start tagging with keywords but will try >>7836086

is there a program (windows or linux) that can sort and find pics by color/colors

>>

I don't use categories, I use hydrus and tags.
Tags are motives on the pictre, composition, color, emotions, if I edited it or not, characters, series etc.
Your categories make sense though.

I use 4chan Downloader (it's on Sourceforge).

I keep papes that are just like... "yeah i like this." go in the main big wallpaper folder. It's a clusterfuck of just pretty & funny things I like.

Anything fandom related goes in a nerd shit folder. All of it. Sometimes the more 'aesthetic' ones get copied into the general folder as well.

Then I have a folder for tiled/repeating pattern papes

Then I've got a folder for holiday/seasonal papes. Fall+Halloween in one subfolder, and winter+crimmis in another. No others.

And last, a folder just for food papes. I had to quarantine them to their own folder when I started trying to lose weight.

This pape is from the big general clusterfuck folder.

It's very simple, really: by month and year of acquisition, and deduplication using exact matches (as in: identical files) and similarity detection.

$ ls /pic
2011-08
...
2021-11

It becomes like a picture book or folder, seeing what you liked 10 years ago and now. I've been collecting since 2011-08 (begin of records).

Since storage is very cheap these days, everything is also backed up, just like my private, original pictures.

I have about 18,000 papes, all in one unsorted folder. I have the wallpaper randomly cycle through them every minute, so I guess I'll eventually see all of them. I just like the different images: scifi; mecha; women; retro-futurism; earth moving equipment; celebrities; fine art and sculpture; humor; fashwave; nostalgic images from many decades; quotations and inspiration; movies; abstract images; etc. I use inb4404.py (a Python script, for you noncognoscenti).

Mine looks a lot more generic compared to this.

Angels
Animals
Anime -> Name of Series/Movie
Colorsplash
Comic Book Covers
Cosplay
Deus Vult
DeviantArt -> Name of Artists
Dragons
Fractalius
Entertainment ->Name of Series/Movie
Games -> Name of Game
Giants
Guns
Homes
J. R. R. Tolkien
Landscape
Movie Posters
Nature
Ocean
Pinups
Post-Apocalyptic
Sci-Fi & Cyberpunk
Screenshot folder that I organize by year
Superheroes -> Name of Hero
To Be Sorted
Vikings (in general, not the show)
Warriors
Zombies

All in all I have 38,065 files divided among 495 folders, not every one of those is in a 16:9 fullscreen wallpaper.
A lot of the DeviantArt stuff for example are portraits

These have been hand-picked for nearly a decade (starting in 2013) so no scripts or programs to auto-scrape threads. Hopefully this means that most of the stuff in here is quality, but of course our tastes may differ. This should give your own collection a kickstart if you are still sitting in the low-thousands with some high-quality stuff (and some low-quality shitposts). mostly gathered from /wg/, but also from other places that I cant remember off the top of my head. I know that some old oligarch and >>7821126 stuff is in here, and many more pieces of OC.

I also included a folder with the VIP MELLOW flash and a standalone flashplayer, which is what I used over my years of browsing /wg/ to stay as comfy as possible; thought you would like to have that too.

love you guys and stay comfy
