My grandfather passed away today. He was a chief engineer in commercial marine, had a good life, some regrets, but lots of happy moments as well.He was the father I never had, I lived with him for the last 8 years, and I owe all my success thanks to his support, when he would pay the houses's expenses, so I did not have to work a dead end job and progress well.He left happy. He said he is really proud of me and how things turned out, and he know that he leaves the family in good hands. He also died exactly as he should have. With me, holding his arm till his last breath, exactly the same way he held mine in my first breaths. Please, let's make a thread worthy of the circumstance. Post pictures that an old-school seafarer would appreciate.RIP27/1/1930 - 14/11/2021

May he RIP and you have a great life!
My humble offering.
Here have this photo I took during my last contract.I'm a 3rd officer, from me personally... big respect for the guys in the engine room. Being a seafarer is definitely something that'll make you different from the rest and it's not something everyone can do. Due to my very different views on life... never really fit in... vicious cycle of ruining my personal life and love relationships by being absent for long periods only to yearn to go back to sea because I once again have nothing going for me back "home"... maybe the only real home I have is the ship that goes from port to port. Just know that he probably had thoughts about you a lot during his time at sea and is glad you are doing your best, be a good man before all and that is everything a man can ask of you. There is something special in a man's soul when a long day at sea comes to an end watching the sun set. I often wonder how many before me for thousands of years have also watched the same scene and found momentary joy in the little things.
>>7847914Very artistic, thank you very much.>>7848182Very beautiful and peaceful music anon, thank you for this one. Saved.>>7848475That's a beautiful photo anon, thank you.I can definitely relate with your thoughts on how you don't have anything waiting for you. I spent many summers on an island away from my main city, and each November when I would return, I found that less and less people and things actually cared. For you, however, I hope that you create an environment in which you can truly breath.>I often wonder how many before me for thousands of years have also watched the same scene and found momentary joy in the little thingsIsn't that a beautiful thought? How nice and peaceful is to see a landscape, whether land or sea, and feel that that same image has stayed the same for hundred of years, and you are in the same position with a person many, many generations before you. Truly makes you admire nature.Have a great life, anon. I truly wish that for you.
Will post one soon anon, give me a sec
>>7841772My deepest condolences anon. He sounds like a great man, a good man. Keep making him proud. Pic is my OC, but will post a few more (off web) that I think is worthy of the OP's thread. ~Peace

They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep. For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof. They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.
>>7841772>He was the father I never had, I lived with him for the last 8 years, and I owe all my success thanks to his support, when he would pay the houses's expenses, so I did not have to work a dead end job and progress wellfarewell to a based man

RIPThis one always gives me vibes
>>7841772I'm sorry for your loss, OP. God bless you and your gramps. He sounds like a good man and that's what it takes to raise another good man. I'm glad he went on his way well, that was a good way to go.Mine died last Saturday, so I feel your pain. He was very close to me as well. He lived across the globe from me, so I visited him every summer. Due to covid didn't get to visit him for past two years, but finally got a chance to do so in December. Three weeks after I left he died. I'm still processing that OP, and I'm sure you will too for a while, but keep being the man your gramps would continue to be proud of. Here's a few pics from one my deployments in the Navy.
>>7862113Beautiful choice of segments, anon. Be safe and well.>>7863326He was indeed based, I learned so much from him, he was the best example and anti-example I ever had/will have.>>7863888Thank you for the picture, anon.>>7864367My condolences, anon. May he RIP. If he was old, this always happens for the best of everyone, and first and foremost, him.I loved and saved all of your photos. There's a very nice collection being made here, I really appreciate your input, as well as everyone elses's. Be safe in the Navy!
Got a few papes for this collection.

>>7841772Blessed thread, God rest the old gentleman.
>>7843618A bit of an late reply, but here goes :)I took this picture on my very first voyage as a Cadet.Must be close to Gibraltar.Funny how time flies. As it happens I will get on a ship that is almost identical to the one I was on, with much of the same Route and cargo.Just not as an Cadet anymore...
>>7871680Thank you for the backstory, anon. Are you planning to stay in the commercial marine for long?
>>7871209dr.suess; "Firebird"you should check out some of his lesser known art, there's some surprisingly pretty ones in his collection
>>7872480That largely depends on the Market and my personal progression. If I get promoted reasonably fast and get contracts that I like, then sure.I dont want to deal with contracts that are more than 3 months long.If not then I might get a position ashore. Flag state administration or shipping company stuff...
>>7872981>>7872982>>7872983Awesome collection anon, changed my wallpaper.>>7872939Pay off any debt, buy a house and then stay ashore. You already know it's not a good idea to start a family when you're away from home for so much time.
>>7874063its not really a collection, but glad you liked them
Condolences to you for your Grandfather. My father was a seaman to in Naples.
I have a few papes to share. Some of them, I'm not quite sure are thread appropriate but I'm going to post anyway.I'd also like to thank everyone who has posted in this thread, and OP for making it. I don't use these types of backgrounds, but I have someone who will greatly appreciate them.(1/5)
>>7876960I am deeply sorry for your loss OP. I lost my father about 6 years ago - I can't believe it's been that long already. When he died it hit me hard. I had just graduated and it felt like there was nothing waiting for me in life except for death.(2/5)
>>7876962I believe that grief will always be waiting to come back to you. It will come in waves, crashing into you. But as time passes those waves will get smaller, and you will learn to stand against them or let your grief wash over you and subside.
>>7876963It's clear that your grandfather was a good man. If you ask me, the world needs more men trying to be good, and fewer trying to be great. He will always live on in you as long as you keep working to make him proud. May he rest in peace.(4/5)
>>7841772my father passed away last week anon, my condolences.
>>7841772My condolences anon, I'll post what I have. These are from Aivazovsky, he's one of my favorite artists and he does such a good job portraying the ocean. I have this one hung up on my wall.
>>7877068Not aivazovsky anymore, could've sworn i had more.
>>7842293hey anon you probably won't see this but I got my boat licence yesterday and I'm going out on my first long trip tomorrow. I am thinking of your grandfather and will try to post images here when I am back. best wishes,Anon
>>7877221Oh and btw I am the guy you replied to if I wasn't clear enough.

>>7867040This is beautiful, where is this from?
>>7847815dont mass reply you nigger
>>7883412The struggle looks real.
>>7841772Your story brought me some tears anon, especially the father you never had part. I also had a golden grandfather, the grumpy type who never spoke much but the few things he told me taught me more than my father ever did. He was a mountaineer army veteran and a farmer when not at war I'm very proud of him, he passed away 12 years ago.Have a sailing pape.
>>7841772I'm sure your grandfather will always proud of you anon

>>7888756More like this please!
My condolences anon. My father is a sailor and I alwas felt something calling me to the sea. I will post pics of my latest trip
>>7878655That's because it was the flight deck of a US frigate, broski.
>>7841772RIP to your grandfather man. I worked as a deckhand for the Canadian Cost Guard. Bless you and your family.
I only come to this board when I want to change my wallpapers obviously and never see ocean related threads. I got the inclination to check, and this was the first thread. Kinda funny.>>7841772RIP to your grandfather OP. He can rest easy now
>>7890070Are you still there?
>>7851911This one is my favourite in this thread, honestly just breathtakingly beautiful. Jealous of OP's grandfather if he had the chance to be surrounded by views like this one. So many lives spent behind desks just working to live, I find it inspiring that some people still manage to spend their limited time out in the real world living the way life was intended to be lived. >>7841772 My condolences anon. my grandpa spent his life at sea so it hits me a little personally too, but I know he had a damn noteworthy lifetimes worth of experiences
>>7891891Wow, did you take that one?
>>7841772Second offical in merchant navy reportingMy ancestors smile upon me
>>7841772>He left happy. He said he is really proud of me and how things turned out, and he know that he leaves the family in good hands.>He also died exactly as he should have. With me, holding his arm till his last breath, exactly the same way he held mine in my first breaths. This resonates deeply with me and wish you all the best
>>7893750Hey man, do you know the name of this ship?
>>7889900Where is that?
>>7894899Her name was Jauréguiberry (1891-1934), a pre-dreadnought battleship of the French Navy.
OP hereSo, today marks 6 months from his departure. I want to thank each and everyone of you for your contributions, and know that I check the thread everyday and make sure it stays afloat.I feel this thread honors his memory in one of the best ways possible./wg/ does feel like home.
>>7877719Is he gonna be alright?
>>7891332No, mine was decommissioned in 2015. Last one of her kind. I miss her.
>>7893589God how much I want to visit that place..
>>7897886i hope you're going well now, OP. I got you a nice wallpaper, i hope you like it as much as i do
>>7893758Not sure which ship this is, but it was used on the cover of Clutch's album Psychic Warfare. Very cool.
>>7897996What kind of ship are you inside now? Any pics?
