When I was younger, I had this dream where I was sitting on the ground of the sidewalk, in the middle of the night. There's not a single soul in sight. I am the last living being on earth. I'm truly alone. But I'm not frightened of being all by myself or afraid of the dark. Instead, there's this soothing sensation of the melancholic solitude that surrounds me.

I had this dream twice and over the years, it's one of the most memorable dreams I ever had. Pic related, as it somewhat captures this feeling.

idk about liminal spaces, but I love seeing pics of urban infrastructure completely empty, lit up at night, especially with older street lights that give off either a warm orange or slight greenish hue

Yeah, and if you add a little fog or snow it adds even more.
Some evenings I spend hours upon hours on the web looking at this stuff.
Sad that a lot of lighting is being replaced by white hospital lights... horibble :/

I'm a munitions troop in the Air Force. Over the years as I've gone to different bases I've found one of my favorite liminal spaces has been bomb dumps themselves. Especially at night or during snowy/foggy weather. It's just identical rows of earthbound igloos going on and on as far as the eye can see in every direction. I've seen some amazing shots that would have made for some incredible photos, but unfortunately for security purposes photography isn't permitted inside.

I'm wondering if I should take pics of the best and most liminal-esque shots for myself, and maybe 30 years down the line when I retire I'd actually get to share them.

Not a single picture in this entire thread is a "liminal space". In fact, there's virtually nothing that can be a liminal space in the first place, captured through a photography. Such things are extremely rare, because, hint hint retards, they are LIMINAL, thus UNCAPTURABLE.

Fucking retards, next time read something about liminality before you copy-pasta idiotic sub from another site.

What you are posting is nothing but depressing dark vistas, nothing else. You remind me of the cretins with frisson. Also completely clueless.

not everyone is as obsessed with minutiae and trivial semantics like you. and not everyone is brainwashed by american politics to the point they reactionarily have to make an assumption about the political leaning of a person, when it's completely unrelated.
do you complain when not every single word is used literally? you said "psychoretard." thats not a proper word, you just made it up. how hypocritical of you to pretend like you care about semantics when youre not using "proper" words.
face it, you simply love drama and love creating things in your head to get mad at. which is a fitting trait for someone who is presumably a neoliberal.

and telling others that theyve "brought nothing to the discussion" when you came into a wallpaper thread to act like a whiny little bitch is hilarious, the irony is completely lost on you.

a gas station, motel., or a train track or a college party or a wedding are are liminal spaces that are constantly in photos. liminal spaces are actually quite common and even a bit banal to an observer. The thread is trying to find a mood of sadness that fits with some liminal spaces and mostly succeeds - although some papes here are not liminal at all that's true
>>
>>7923248
No. You're just describing a historical moment captured in the past. Liminal moment, fuckwit, means a meaningful transition from one moment to another. Like entering a stargate of kind.

>>7923258
College party is not liminal, idiot. A wedding is a liminal moment, but must be captured in a specific way and time. Definitely not comon. Also liminal space has nothing to do with sadness, only transition.

I think it'd be good. To many escape rooms are kid oriented or lame haunted house spooky. If you could do a large place like that with a Stanly parable sort of unease to it I think it'd be a hit. It's surprising how quickly you can get used to the sound of traffic constantly going past, eventually you just kinda tune it out.

Also, they have these things called net curtains, pretty good for keeping people from seeing in through your windows, downstairs or upstairs.

On the other hand, the restaurant is pretty obvious, would be pretty easy to just decide not to buy the house next door to it if the smells/noise are likely to be a problem.

Since not a single fucking retard in this garbage awful thread has posted a single actual liminal space, and had the nerve to claim empty moody spaces are somehow liminal, here's one liminal picture so you actually understand what is a liminal space. It is a major transition from one thing to another, a passage and it is clearly readable and recognized.
You awful retards have zero clue what is liminal space and you should live in shame for getting completely reddited down with your psychobrains destroying a very interesting concept.

Liminality means that moment in which one is in transition from one thing to another, be it a fact, an action, etc.
For this reason, a liminal space should reflect that. As if you had just closed one door and were about to open the next one, for example: the middle room in wich you are in represents liminality.
Pic semi-related, to get an idea

The problem is most people just randomly post empty spaces, without any hint of passage. They often post dark and gloomy spaces and think depressing outlook and emptiness are representation of liminal spaces. For example your picture is somewhat good, because it has a large enough door with ornaments which trigger a possible passage transition along with the long tunnel. However randomly posting the same tunnel with some random door barely visible would not be a liminal space. I also don't like the general idea of any and all action in-between, because then you can basically say anyone awake is always in liminal space between sleeping and awaking, which is a nonsense. The action itself is mandatory to be of significance, hardly reversable, with deeper meaning.

No one cares about the term “liminal,” you fuckin' nerds. We have no attachment to it. People just like the mysterious atmosphere of an empty exotic room, and “liminal” was never anything more than an expedient label for it so that we could find more of it. If this sort of stuff can't be classified as “liminal” then we'll just come up with another term for it. Ultimately, no one but a few nerds cares though.
>>
>>7929497
>nobody cares about a specific term
>spends time in a thread about a specific term
Stopped reading there.
>>
>>7929505
>about a specific term
Um, no. Maybe you should finish reading the post & then realize the definition of “liminal” is moot & besides the point of the thread. Or continue being a nerd on the internet whinging about “correct” terminology despite the fact that literally no one here cares & that definitions are subject to change over time anyways in accordance to how a population uses them.
>>
>>7929529
The definition is not moot. The word exists to describe a very specific thing, otherwise we woudn't have to a create a special word for it, genius.
>>
>>7929539
>The definition is not moot.
With regard to this thread, it is.
>>
>>7929543
The definition is everything you have in threads like these. You want /wg/ to become a complete mess where people post random things based on their perception of words?
>>
>>7929544
It's no mystery what the thread was about. There was no confusion as is evident by everyone peacefully posting away. It was understood by all but a few nerds. And the thread was fine until it was derailed by autism.

For the record, if empty rooms aren't technically “liminal” at this point then it doesn't matter since the term will eventually be accepted in English language as also denoting a genre of art that consists of empty rooms. Language evolves over time in accordance to how the public uses it. Words take on additional meanings and there's nothing you pedants can do about it. You'll spend the rest of your miserable life screaming into the wind over people “misusing” the term “liminal” and you will be unintelligibly mumbling “liminal” on your death bed to the bewilderment of your surrounding family members and it will all be for nothing.
>>
>>7929546
This thread is not about dark empty places. Pretty sure such threads already exist on /wg/. You have kidnapped a very specific term, for no reason at all, and like a retard try to glue it to something completely irrelevant. It's like if people in ocean threads started posting their ocean scent deodorants. You're a delusional fuckwit, ruining threads, unable to learn, unable to fix issues. Also your constant whining about my life is pretty telling you have some serious personal issues and you project a lot.

This just reminds me of back in 2012 when I started noticing the changeover to LED street lamps in my city and no one else seemed to notice. I mean I read up on shit like this before it happened here, so I was bound to notice, But it's strange how much it just changed the vibe. Not that I don't like the LED glow, it has it's own thing about it.

But I always noticed that orange glow of the old lamps even before they over. There's still some of the old orange glow lamps that haven't been touched since. I think it's some shit about how certain lamps are owned by the city while the energy company owns others.

But seeing that old orange glow is nostalgic. And just reminds me of the summers when me and my friends would be out late at night/wee hours of the morning goofing off. Or those times when an older cousin who had a car would just up and make a late night market run or go cruising and take us with them. This was the late 90s to the mid 00s. I miss that shit, it's just a vibe that you don't get anymore. Not because of the lights themselves, but just how much people have changed. The lights are just a trigger to the memories.

Also when the sun started setting and you seen them come on. You just don't get that with the LED because of how they blend in with natural lighting.

And thing is I grew up in a bad neighborhood. And we had fun, thing about that neighborhood now is that it didn't get worse, it's just dead. At least back then it was lively, but just like the people it's just sad and dull now.

It only has as much "soul" as the original photograph (which I don't take credit for, as it's not my photo).
All I did with it was recreate the image for some quick practice. And did the pixel-ly look for fun, and to get an idea of the workflow to see if I could use it in other projects.

Anything soulful about the image was already there. There's not really any critique to be made about video games with the image, and I think you're really just projecting your views of the current state of the industry onto it. Which is fine, but it's just something to be aware of.
As the other anon said, the image was done with modern tech (Blender), and was stylized to get that look. If I had made it with the specs of a console at the time, it would look drastically different and noticeably limited. But like I said, it was just some practice and a bit of fun.

Here's another one of mine.

and during my deep searches to find the source of the image to find more reference material, and hopefully the exact location to see in Google Maps, I found the original photographer (Jonathan Leonard Widmer). Dude really deserves a lot more credit.

Here's the original photo:

As well as the same area, from a different angle:

I never did find the original location, but judging from the Photographer's "About" section, he's based in Dallas, Texas, so in all likelyhood it's somewhere in the city. If someone really had some time on their hands, I guess they could streetview a bunch of overpasses until they found the exact one.

Actually, plot twist.
In the comments of the alt angle one, he mentions where it is.
>underneath the kay bailey hutchison convention center in downtown dallas; there's a rail station down there

Here's a streetview of the exact location. Wasn't too hard to find once I found where it is, but navigating the streetview to actually get to the right location is a bit of a nightmare since it's "underground".

The original photo was taken from the elevated area behind the screenshot I took.
I don't really know if that kills some of the mystique of the image or not, but it is kind of a fun puzzle to find out where some places are. Definitely would have come in handy when I was recreating the photo though. Wish I had the common sense to just scroll down and read the comments.
