Here's a Gateway pape from the late 90's (or early 2000's). I upscaled it & expanded it to 16:9 ratio. I liked the nice warm atmosphere of the original & it upscaled surpisingly well. Not much detail but not all papes call for a lot of detail.

'Solo 3100' refers to the laptop model, but it works nice here since it almost sounds like it could be the name of the plane - like there's something special about the plane.

Expanded to 16:9 ratio & upscaled. This ancient pape was from the Evolution theme for Enlightenment 16. It has a strange vibe to it. An upscale of this retro pape >>7919070 from 2005 (and expanded to 16:9 ratio). I always thought it looked neat & liked how it harks back to that computer-generated abstract imagery that was commonplace in the 2000's which often tinged with a dark mysterious aura. And I thought it would be really neat to see this one be given a second life in HD.

This probably won't look too great at very high res but it may look somewhat adequate at mid res (1920p or lower). Might come back to this in the future to improve it. Not sure. Just kinda done with it for now. Anyone who thinks they can improve upon these upscales has my blessing. I just want nice papes, man.

No, I learned all of this on my own. Funny, I didn't realize that this is something that could justify making a video tutorial. It's crazy how much this has snowballed since it started at the beginning of this year. It started off with just Gigapixel AI upscales combined with touch-ups in GIMP. Then I got DeNoise AI & Sharpen AI (all from Topaz). Then I started creating image expansions with GIMP followed by Gigapixel upscaling. Then I started playing around with ESRGAN-based Cupscale & its various pre-trained models. Then I started combining the results of different upscales into one image using GIMP layers. Then a HUGE game changer happened with Dalle2. That opened the door to a LOT of new potential wallpapers.

I'm not tech-savvy at all so everything I've mentioned should be accessible to the layman (although GIMP has a bit of a learning curve).

FYI, you could do better than this if you were to track down the original stock image by John Lund. I've only been able to find prints.

I work all day Saturday so I should be able to try upscaling it either by Sunday or Monday

Thank you for taking time out from your schedule to upscale this wallpaper and breathe new life into it. The difference in quality is night and day.
>>
I might have to buy GigaPixel for $99 just to restore all my old favorite papes.

I use Gigapixel AI, DeNoise AI, and Sharpen AI. All by Topaz. A lot of money but it was worth it for me. But if you can only afford one, just get Gigapixel.

Alternatively, if you have a powerful Nvidia graphics card (which it requires if I'm not mistaken), you could run ESRGAN and train it to upscale stuff. But I've had nothing but issues with installing it. However, there's a GUI version of it called Cupscale which is very easy to install & use. And there's a ton of pre-trained ESRGAN modules you can put into Cupscale. I think 4x-UltraSharp was the one I had the most success with.

It doesn't end there either. I sometimes combine the results of Topaz programs with that of Cupscale & merge the best of both worlds with the layers feature of photo editing software like GIMP or Photoshop (I use GIMP with the Resynthesizer plugin).

If you're upscaling old small images as wallpapers for modern monitors, you should definitely also look into DALL-E which is an invaluable resource for expanding images to a wider screen ratio. You expand them to 16:9 ratio & then upscale it. See: >>7938982

I forgot to mention that ESRGAN/Cupscale are free & require no subscription.

You're probably long gone but I gave it another shot with 4x-UltraSharp & it turned out a little better albeit at a smaller size. The text is still kinda fucked though. It would have to be repaired with GIMP or Photoshop but I'm leaving that to you since it's time-consuming & you care about this image a lot more than I do.

I ran that upscale under DeNoise AI. Not sure if it's better but here.

Yes, giving classic wallpapers a second life is one of my primary motivations with this thread. I hope to see more of it from others.

Sort of an empty bump. Didn't have time to work on my current project this week - too busy ricing my desktop.

Another empty bump (sorry). Here's a throwback to the late 2000's which I don't think was ever properly upscaled. There is another version of this image that has widely circulated the web but every upload I found was either cropped or just pitifully small.

Could someone please remove the text "Save yourself"?
I'll be immensely grateful. Thanks!

Here's a quick (<10 min) edit I did. It looks quite bad right now (I ran out of time to work on it). The orange residual stain on the reflected light fixture & on the ceiling needs to be dealt with. I will see what I can improve tomorrow night.

Let me know if you guys want anything cropped and/or downscaled to 1920x1080. I always share papes in full resolution for the sake of those with taller screen ratios (or just larger screens).

My OCD could not resist making one last minor edit. Hopefully I'm done.

Here's a pape I've been working on & off on for months. It's based on the original launch poster from 1996. I managed to expand it to 16:9 ratio using GIMP. Getting the space dust to look just right was like performing brain surgery. But it was worth it. Every classic series deserves a classic wallpaper.

Also, I apologize for the empty bumps. This pape really tied me up. But all of my remaining projects are either complete or near completion. So there should be no more empty bumps. And once they're all done I'll just post them all & let the thread finally die rather than keep bumping it.

[I realize it's ridiculous to have had this thread up for so long, but since there's a “coomerwave” thread that's been up as long as this I don't feel so bad about it lol]
