>>7972681Art is from Simon Stalenhag. On his website his pictures are presented with no context asides from themselves. No words, no clues. Just a title for the painting set. That being said, he has a "story" in mind and publishes books off with brief captions to them, which tie them together into a bigger world. These images are from "Things from the Flood". It's based in Sweden. A revolutionary research and production laboratory just shuts down completely, abandoning it's employees and resources. Crazy equipment litters the landscape and kids just fuck around with it. In these two it's a boyfriend and girlfriend who are fucking with old teleportation equipment. The scientists never got it to work right. The dogs they sent through always ended up "spaghettified"

>>7988386I'm ex army, stuff like that actually happens. I wasn't there, but here's a story one of the sergeants of my platoon told me from a deployment in Afghanistan:>A small field camp was set up on a hilltop near a small village in the middle of nowhere in Afghanistan for observation and QRF support missions>Basically always quiet, nothing happened>Kids from the village would sometimes come up because the soldiers gave them small gifts like pencils and shit and the people there were fine with the military presence>Some day things are more quiet than usual in the village, barely anyone outside their homes>Soldiers spot one of the kids, a little girl, leaving the village and heading towards them alone>They notice she's sobbing and walking slow and wearing a big jacket>They realize they don't have enough time to pack up everything and just leave before she reaches them>Start yelling and shouting at her, doesn't matter, she doesn't stop>They radio to command ask what to do>Ordered to remain in their position and not let her get near the camp>Firing warning shots at her>Keeps going, sobbing even more>Radio again>Something something possible ambush, remain in position, reinforcements are on their way>"She WILL NOT reach the camp.">Got told if the girl got any closer than (I think) 30-40m she must be shot>They had to kill her because she didn't stop no matter what>No ambush happened, EOD later came around, she was wearing an explosive vestTaliban had apparently noticed that the soldiers trust the kids and would let them near their camp, so they strapped a fucking expolsive vest to a 5 year old village kid and pressured her to go to the soldiers. It's not always angry looking men with beards shouting "Allahu Akbar" who do suicide bombings, sometimes it's some innocent or at least innocent looking person that makes use of other's false trust.

Younger and younger children have been involved. Children as young as 7 have reported that they were deployed as suicide bombers. Surviving children who trained as suicide bombers describe having been given amulets containing verses from the Quran that they were told would protect them from the explosion. They said they were told that when the bomb they carried detonated, everyone around them would die but they would survive.

>>8000055some guys playing poker. not much of a story
>>8001884The girl is holding three Aces and a pair of 8s, while the guy across the table is going all in with nothing that can beat her hand. The only question is if she can draw her gun faster than he can when he flips his shit over making a stupid bluff.Well, unless his cards are an Ace and a Queen. Then he ain't bluffing.
>>8001884It isn't the full "dead man's hand," but the combination of black eight and black ace (with skull logo, even) strikes me as the artist foreshadowing the outcome of that gun being drawn.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_man%27s_hand
>>8001974
>>8001976
>>8000055>>8001884>>8001906>>8001938Another interesting detail: the girl is holding an 8 of clubs. On the table is an 8 of spades. The guy sitting on the left of the images is also holding what appears to be an 8 of spades. Now, maybe that's supposed to be a 9 of spades in his hand, but the alignment of the spades looks like an 8-spot display rather than for 9. So, if he is really holding an 8 of spades, there is some sort of cheating going on ... and, he is also the dealer. If he isn't the cheat (somehow), he's been sitting the hand with the knowledge that cheating is going on and waiting for the moment when the hands get shown and the evidence of cheating revealed. The likelihood of gunplay in the next few minutes is almost a certainty, and the dealer is probably the one person at the table who knows how serious it's about to get. And be ready for it.It's crazier when you look at the stakes in the pot ... the dealer has been bluffing that the pair of Aces down plus the second 8 of spades will somehow give him two pairs. But one of his pairs is two 8s of spades. He's got to be shitting bullets over the fact that his best possible chances for survival are trying to fold, and lose what he's bet, while trying to not reveal the cards in his hand. And, the more I study it, the more I am certain he's holding an 8 of spades. It just isn't drawn correctly to be a 9. I doubt the artist made that mistake given the careful attention to detail everywhere else.Oh, yeah. They're playing with chips instead of cash. Not a big discrepancy, but cash would usually be more expected. Given the quality of the table they're sitting at, they're probably in a more formal gambling establishment rather than a casual pick-up game in a bar. So, security will probably add to the excitement. And, also, his left hand is below the table top, usually a Big No-No in high stakes games, both for cheating and holding/reaching for a concealed weapon.
>>8001906>>8001938>>8002011i know nothing about poker. I should have kept my mouth shut
>>8000166Why? It's realistic.
>>8002125It really isn't though. Plate armor is really good against arrows, it basically makes you impervious to it but for weakpoints like inside the visors or the back of the thighs. Of course him being skewered by arrowss multiple times in the thighs and lower legs would be gayer than a St Sebastian painting but at least it would be realistic.Armor in general has to be good against arrows as it's the primary danger on a battlefield. Even mail was really good against arrows, hence the "hedgehog" monikers for the frank knights when they fought the turks.
>>8002011>Now, maybe that's supposed to be a 9 of spades in his hand, but the alignment of the spades looks like an 8-spot display rather than for 9A 9 card traditionally has 2 columns of 4 suit symbols each (exactly like an 8 card would have), but on a 9 card the 2 columns are separated by an additional single centered suit symbol, kind of forming an H or X shape.I'm guessing the picture card on the table is probably the King of Clubs (top head facing to left edge of card with sword in hand behind head), I believe traditionally the top head of the King of Spades faces his sword to the right side of the card. The girl is in the strongest position with a guaranteed Full House (Aces & 8's), however if the fourth Ace drops as the river card then she gets 4 Of A Kind (4x Aces) which would be pretty much unbeatable.Blue Shirt to the right might as well fold as the best he can really hope for is 3 Of A Kind from the river (3x Aces), or some combination of 2 Pair (i.e. 2 Aces & 2 6's, or 2 Aces & 2 8's, or 2 Aces & 2 9's, or 2 Aces & 2 Kings)And Blue vest in the middle either needs the fourth Ace and a King in hand in which case he wins with a stronger Full House (Ace's & Kings), otherwise he needs at least 4 Of A Kind to beat the girls guaranteed Full House, which he can only do if he's holding 2 Kings in hand and the fourth king drops as the river card.Of course that's all presuming there's no cheating going on and that everything about the game, and the players, is legit and on the level.
>>8002127It actually is quite a realistic scenario though, although it almost entirely depends upon the combination of:*the strength and experience of the archer*the poundage of the bow used*the type of arrows used*the quality of the armour plate*the range between the archer and knightAll things falling into place though, it's perfectly possible for an Archer to get armour penetrating shots on a knight, though what physical damage effects the arrows do, and have, after penetration depends on how fit and strong the knight is and what additional layers he's wearing below his plate armour. But even if the arrows don't penetrate, there's still the psychological effect, whether taken as a positive or negative, of feeling many arrows pinging off your armour during a battle.
>>8002194Archers at Azincourt were shooting the French at short range but the later were mostly concerned about arrows getting in their visors, not through, not even in the mail. Getting four arrows in a plate is absolutely not realistic, getting them to stick to the plate even less. Of course it can happen, but it's very unlikely because if the top armor couldn't protect you from arrows... what what is even for, considering that's their primary purpose!? "Realistic" usually doesn't mean "can happen", rather "can be expected" and you really shouldn't expect arrows to bring down heavy armor. And about that psychological effect, we can go back to the knights at Azincourt, they were basically rained by arrows but stupidly kept marching. Same with the early battles during the first crusade, where turks reported that knights were covered with arrows but basically unaffected. After all, these people were warriors for a living so again, it's not unsurprising that getting poured at by arrows is part of what they are supposed to manage. Exhaustion certainly takes its toll though.Overall, the image in media and film of armor, and especially steel and bronze plate, to be routinely penetrated by arrows or swords is ridiculous because if that was the case, why did people even wear armor in the first place?
>>8002204Plate armor is to protect you from swords and hopefully deflect arrows coming in at glancing angles. A crossbow or just really strong regular bow using arrows with or without iron tips can penetrate plate if the angle of impact is sufficiently acute.
>>8002204>Overall, the image in media and film of armor, and especially steel and bronze plate, to be routinely penetrated by arrows or swords is ridiculous because if that was the case, why did people even wear armor in the first place? Why do people wear "bulletproof" vests today?
>>8002205>Plate armor is to protect you from swords and hopefully deflect arrows coming in at glancing angles. This is contrary to historical accounts and experimental archeology but ok. How did they deal with arrows and crossbows then? Why did plate armor use meant less shields as well? Why did all the kings and nobles bothered with cumbersome and heavy plate armor in the first place?>A crossbow or just really strong regular bow using arrows with or without iron tips can penetrate plate if the angle of impact is sufficiently acute.Iron > steel now. Ok.Damn I wish I knew poker as well.
>>8002208Because it helps. It doesn't make you invulnerable.
>>8002208>>Plate armor is to protect you from swords and hopefully deflect arrows coming in at glancing angles.>This is contrary to historical accounts and experimental archeology but ok.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plate_armourYou are wrong.
>>8002209That's plain retardedly non-argumentative and contrary to historical accounts and basic logic but ok. >hopefully deflect arrows.Yeah that's a masterplan from a warrior caste... What a great use of resources.
>>8002210You are going to have to be a bit more specific than just posting a link to a wikipedia article.
>>8002212>Plate armour was virtually invulnerable to sword slashes. It also protected the wearer well against spear or pike thrusts and provided decent defense against blunt trauma.>While this armour was effective against cuts or blows, their weak points could be exploited by long tapered swords or other weapons designed for the purpose, such as pollaxes and halberds.>The effect of arrows and bolts is still a point of contention with regard to plate armour. Just read the article if you want to be proven wrong, but I expect you'll continue to seethe instead.
>>8002213>0 sourcesYeah, I'll keep reading Froissart, Contamine and Capwell thank you.Plate was made bulletproof but you'd believe that arrows could penetrate it... In the early HYW when it was transitional plate, there was enough gaps to exploit, but the later plate yeah no.
>>8002214>Moving the goalpostsMedieval knights weren't using bulletproof armor.
>>8002215The armor in the very first pic isn't medieval. Also still no sources, no nothing.
>>8002127>>8002194>>8002204>>8002205>>8002206>>8002208>>8002209>>8002210>>8002211>>8002212>>8002213>>8002215>>8002216Good sperg off guysAlso, one of you is wrong. Plate armour indeed was very effective at stopping arrows as well as sword slashes, stabs and even some spear thrusts (as in you get a broken rib and a 1/2 inch stab rather than it goes right through you). Modern media does make armour seem ridiculously weak as we see heroes dancing around slashing people up and chopping off limbs as if their armour does nothing. If it were that ineffective (seeing how heavy and cumbersome it was) people wouldn't have bothered to wear it. Not to mention how ridiculously expensive a full suit of plate armour was, considering how little iron was produced in the Middle Ages compared to modern standards, people wouldn't have spent so much on it.Even gambeson does a great job of stopping arrows. There are tons of videos on Youtube where people test stuff out.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CULmGfvYlsoGambeson stopping arrows.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ds-Ev5msyzoPlate armour just snapping and pinging off arrows like they are nothing - note one of the first four arrows hits the armpit area and goes through the chainmail but the plate works. The arrows hardly leave marks. Notice that this guy is also shooting pretty close at a static target that doesn't move around like a man would or get knocked back by an impact reducing the impact force. Plenty of armour tests have this problem where the static figure presents far more physical resistance (so a more damaging strike) than a man would as he would rock/bend with the strike naturally, being knocked back or over - many spear strikes that reach the level of force to penetrate good armour would knock the guy right over rather than him standing still like ironman and having the hit connect like that. There are tons of these vids just search on YouTube. I assume you don't need anymore spoonfeeding.
