I figured I might as well start posting those pictures, though I still havent had the time to finish editing the end of the trip, I have enough for now.In order, it will take us from Tokyo, to Kanazawa, Kobe, Hiroshima, Nagoya, and back to Tokyo! If you’re interested in any specific place I’ll do my best to provide details.
Pigeaon
And this concludes the Tokyo 1 pictures (in broad strokes), next Kanazawa!
Thanks anon for all these cool shots!
>>8012894You’re very welcome, I’m glad you enjoy them!
>>8012854konnichiwa tori-san.Thank you for sharing your amazing pictures anon, you replenished my pape folder.
thanks op post moar if u can
>>8012907A pigeon is a "hato" pronounced like "heart" because <3>>8012921There will be more to come! Will have to post in batches though
>>8012837i am interested in your trip as a whole if you can give a summary of it. my girlfriend and I are planning our trip now, hoping for next spring. We are from Canada. Can you tell us what you did in each place, what kind of accommodation you chose and would recc? Also what was the cost of certain things? Any info and hidden gems would be appreciated. How you travelled from place to place while in Japan would be helpful too! One thing we are a bit cautious of, is that my girlfriend has a lot of tattoos and I hear it's a bit looked down upon over there and can get you denied access in places. Any info helps, thank you!
>>8012971Sure, Spring is a nice time to visit, there can be a lot of people but it'll be a lot less stuffy than summer! We bought a JR Pass and moved around the country after a pretty short time in each town, we mainly visited pretty popular places, actually asking google "things to do in X" tends to yield good resultsThere are beautiful things everywhere, so no matter where you choose to go, you'll probably be pretty happy. However I'd recommend staying in another city than Tokyo, Hiroshima is awesome and has tons of beautiful sights around, Kyoto is also beautiful but crowded during holiday periods Compared to my country (France), hotels and restaurants are way cheaper in Japan, so we were able to stay in good hotels during the two weeks, even splurge a bit on renting a traditional house for a couple of nights10 US bucks will get you a good meal, double it and you got a big good meal and probably a drink of your choice Check on booking.com for hotels, it's my preferred method to compare places and where they are in the cities I plan to visit Guesthouses aren'd bad either usually, so you can stay in town for very cheap, less than 30 dollars a night last time I checkedTattoos are mainly prohibited in some bathhouses, usually smaller ones, the big ones in Dogo Onsen, or in big hotels that have them don't have a ban.I haven't personnally encountered a "no tattoos" sign yet, and I do love me some onsen time.My personal hidden gem is Hiroshima Mitaki-Dera, a buddhist temple complex on the outskirt of Hiroshima. You can easily get there with a bus, indicated on google maps, which can take you straight there. It was the first place of the sort I ever visited, and it was simply magical; please go there if you decide to go to Hiroshima. Miyajima is wonderful, but there can be a lot of people, though I also highly recommend. Fun getaway from Hiroshima, which I also recommend: take a ferry to Matsuyama, and stay around Dogo Onsen!
>>8012976Matsuyama castle's my favourite, it's beautiful, and I've seen most of the big ones, this one's not too miss!
>>8012976this was so kind, and so helpful. thank you so much!
>>8013013You're welcome! You're gonna have a great time; I recommend picking up some japanese before getting there since it's really easiest this waythe basic survival stuff goes a long way, you'll find yourself always saying the same things!
Last picture for Kanazawa,next, Kobe!
thanks again op
On the way to Akashi
And this ends that parenthese, with the Akashi Kaikyo bridge in the distance
Let's go see HImeji Castle now!(don't do it in summer, biggest crowd we saw, super hot, it was a trial and a half)
And back in Kobe, right on the mountain 15 minutes away from inside the Shinkansen station is a really nice waterfall, it's a good walk you can take even when just transferring train
Next, onward to Hiroshima, passing briefly through Okayama
>>8012837
What camera/film you usin?? this looks analog or maybe fujifilm digital
>>8013604I'm wondering the same thing, I need to invest in a better camera eventually but I don't want to spend the amount of money you need for those types of things
>>8013523god she's so cute. I don't think going to Japan would be good for my mental health
>>8013595That's pretty cool, there's a surprising amount of very large statues dotting the countrysideApparently some of them are getting derelict though>>8013604>>8013628A Fuji X-Pro3, I really like the customizable film sims and having an OVF and a tiny screen to show the exposure/colours in the corner is wonderfulI'd been shooting film for almost my whole photography life before switching to digital a couple years agoI've also been editing these pictures like I would edit my film scans>>8013629There are a LOT of adorable girls wearing adorable outfits its well it made feel like a creep when I found myself watching the highschoolers with their serafuku uniforms, but they really do be cuteGirlfriend also admitted to staring and was pretty glad it wasn't weird for a girl to look at other girls like that
The Hiroshima Peace Museum, from the park
The atomic dome can be seen in the distance, under the arch of the memorial and the flame of peace
And we now have skipped over to Miyajima!I need to watch it, I'll soon hit the bottom of my already edited folder.
the Folk museum's garden, I love this house, couldn't not pay it a visit this time as well
>>8012837Amazing thread OP!
>>8012837>>8013723I admire your photography
>>8013724>>8013723Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy them, especially since there's more to come! Now that we're in Hiroshima, it was hard not to take a lot of them (and this is already pretty trimmed down, there's a few good pictures that I've just had to cut for brevity. Might post them later if I don't cap my own thread)
This guy's aura is so strong he doesn't even cast a shadow
And alright, I'll it here for today.next will be Mitaki Dera!
Great stuff. Those B&W pics got me feelin' some type of way…
>>8013713cool, is there a story behind this?
>>8012901Thank you, kind anon! You've made one of the best threads here in a while, so comfy!I've read you're from France, i went to Paris this summer, is a beautiful city! Even Giverny is a nice town. Thanks for all the hints here >>8012976May I ask you what camera are you using for your pics? They're very film-like, is it a Fujifilm with custom recipes? I can't wait for your next pics!
>>8013759Thank you! I couldn't do much focus on B&W, but there's still a few to go before the end (this is from 3 years ago)>>8013890On the way up to Daishoin, on MiyajimaThere was a path lined with hundreds of jizous, probably all donations to the temple, and as we turned to take it, we saw smoke flowing down the stairsThe weather something like 35C with 75% humidity, so it was pretty surrealTurns out the temple complex got fog makers in a few places, that turn on every 15 or 20 minutesWe got the same magical effect when exiting the tower on the left of this image >>8013733 (this is the top floor>>8013716 >>8013717), and as we were taking the stairs down, we started hearing rapid percussions coming from the basement, a priest had started praying in the hall, chanting and banging the drum in a quick, strong musical rythm, as we exited the tower, this is what we saw, mist on the sides of the temple, it was surreal on this hot summer afternoon.>>8013894I'm glad you're enjoying it, there's been a lot more kindness and comments than I had expected!Paris does have some very nice looking places and museums, but I wouldn't agree to living thereWould like to visit Giverny though, that sounds very nice!I could say more I'm sure, I ran out of the space in the post c':I'm using a Fuji X-Pro3, with a custom recipe to get me closer to Fuji Superia, and in this case some further editing in Photoshop
Absolutely fantastic photos op, made for a comfy nostalgic night. Since you're done I think I may add a few oc film shots from my own trip as thanks. I'd like to be as good as you one day. They were shot on a disposable over 5 months
the end temple complex of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage
>>8013907Thank you! Not done yet, but don't worry about it, you're free to post photos if you wantI think your pictures are really quite nice! especially those >>8013912 >>8013910 >>8013908 >>8013919 >>8013921I really enjoy how they feel, and I'd be pretty happy to have shot them, they really get the overall vibe throughWhen i was there for 6 months all I shot was film, I wish I could still do that now, but at the same time there was some real quality of life stuff with going digital
And that's it. >>8013927cheers bro! Appreciate the feedback, some of those I am proud of. How long have you been doing photography? Any tips to improve me own?
>>8013931I enjoyI've been at it for about 10 years now I guess, a bit more if we count before I had an actual camera, I guess it's always been on and off, but I started taking it "seriously" about then For me the best way to improve is to keep looking at how you could make your pictures better; it's kind of a trial and error process, I try to get things to look as they do in my mind's eye when I experience them or their memory When a place really resonated with me upon visit, but then I find I don't really have a photo that reflects how it felt, then I'm disappointedBut that doesnt happen oftenA way to scan your film with less noise would be a start, unless you're really into that; but overall I'd suggest keeping at it, simply! Always carry a camera, even if you don't take pictures for days or weeks at a time, having the camera with you you'll keep looking for compositions and trying out stuffGiven what i've seen from your pictures, you got enough level to make it shine when the subject's good to you, if you keep shooting you'll keep honing that capacity and it'll keep getting better!
These I'm hardly doing justice to, I've gotta get back there some day and try some moreThat's also part of the fun >>8013931, there's a few pictures here like >>8013705 that I waited years to be able to get another chance at
And off we go again, with a change of train at Kobe, only a few days after our visit there it was a nice stepping stone (I'm on the same level as those windows in the top right of >>8013540)
posting in epic thread
>>8013952That's really quite helpful, thank you. I think I'm where you were at 10 years ago, but need a proper camera to start practicing. Its not as motivating taking shots where you live, but when I travel its addictive. And that's great advice about looking at scenes and trying to capture them as if they were a future memory. From a complete amateurs perspective, film seems to do that well. Thanks bro, I certainly will.
>>8014142Looking at photo books was also pretty big in getting me started, it's nice to find artists you really like and to think about how they took their photosIn the beginning, looking at Michael Kenna, Hiroshi Sugimoto, others like Alexey Lukarenko, helps seeing what makes an image "clean", they pretty heavy on rules of thirds, like I am>>8014131ur epic chungus
>>8014197>>8014142Titarenko*, no idea who Lukarenko is, probably not a photographer however
thank you, OPI really enjoyed your pictures
>>8014286I'm really glad you did, thank you!
Thanks for these beautiful pictures and much-appreciated travel tips, OP.-a fellow frenchman
>>8014421Glad to read you enjoying them, brother in cheese
By far the best thread I've seen in a long time. Thanks, OP!
>>8012837THANK YOU!man these are gold, love them! reminds me of my trip to Tokyo in 2015.
>>8013718>>8013705I remember seeing these in another thread on here, complementing them and hoping for a japan dump by you and I couldnt be more happy, thanks bro, awesome pictures!
>>8014664>>8014662>>8014588that's a lot of kindness again, thank you all! I'm very happy you're enjoying them and it's making you think of good times and nice thingsAnd we're back in Tokyo now, which means we're approaching the end of this tripHowever I'm sure I'll be able to find more stuff to throw in here until we hit the image cap afterwards, or near enough c:There's a few pictures I kinda regret not including
Fantastic stuff. How deep do you go into color grading? I understand from the posts above that you use digital. I really like the kind of analog-like soft lighting and grain some of these pictures have.
>>8013742Beautiful picture. Big fan of your photos man
>>8014777Thank you! I don't go so deep, I use a custom setting on my camera with one of the fuji film profiles, and I usually don't even bother with editingIn this case, I kinda did, so I tweaked the colours and light on pretty much every image here, though often very slightly (kept the levels around the same, just lit up some spots, darkened some others, to make it more like what our (my) eyes see rather than the camera). For colours, I go with the color balance tool, making small adjustments for the three axes (once for shadows, once for mids, and once for highlights)this gives me the colours I want the fastest (I usually only adjust the values by a maximum of +2 or -2)I've added saturation into most of these too, often in smaller spots, I do a lot of editing by drawing my areas of light and darkness, and colourI don't go very deep, feel free to ask more
>>8014869I'm glad you like this one!It almost didn't make it in because the horizon's blurry, but then I also thought that it gives it a little something I don't dislike Randomness is a part of the fun with photos
>>8014870Meant you >>8014795
>>8014869Would you like to post your instagram?
>>8014927I haven't posted in something like 6 months, but sure, you'll be able to see a bunch more stuff there: https://www.instagram.com/camillepierrephotography/I thought I'd make a page, but I'm not really into the act of regularly posting images, having to find tags and manage the whole thing; plus there wasn't much interest so not a whole lot of incentive to keep it goingMight revive it someday, still
