It's called a Stabilator and here's the plane that the tail section is based on.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_YF-23

Short version, what looks like the horizontal portion of the tail is folded down for high speed flight, when at lower speeds it pops up into a V-tail performing the tasks done by the rudder, elevator, vertical stabilizer and horizontal stabilizer all at once. V-Tails on things like bonanzas are simple enough but fighters, being inherently somewhat unstable aircraft, would require a computer to keep it going the direction the pilot wants with a combination of ailerons, air brakes variable thrust between the engines and thrust vectoring.
Said computer is also required on flying wings like the B-2 spirit and B-21 Raider.

It's a right base to wide final, probably good views. The pilots did fuck up the landing though, but it's a bit deceptive from the view. Looks like they overbanked in, corrected left, then when they straightened for landing, may have had too much crosswind so they crabbed back into the wind but then touched down crabbing and sideloaded their gear. I'm guessing that tailwind to crosswind also blew them past the extended rwy centerline on the approach as well.
Basically you want your nose slightly pointed into the wind so your ground track follows the runway even though your plane's nose is angled off to the side up until just before touching down where you swing the nose to point down the runway. They do this in those videos but then re-enter their crab as they must have tried too early and been pushed off center. You can blow tires if you side load them too hard, thankfully those planes are built with huge tolerances in mind because they must crab to land, they can't wing low.

that's straight up bullshit anon, it's a lot more unsafe than something like the Blackhawk, which has had accidents too over the years. frankly, they keep the V22 in service because it serves a niche (it's fast) and if you fucking die in it, that's a price the Pentagon is willing to pay.

What makes them deathtraps? Also what is the point when regular helis exist?
>>
>>5397420
>What makes them deathtraps?
The same thing that makes them fast, the V/STOL capability. Apparently they take a bit of getting used to for pilots as well, they don't behave like other aircraft, which doesn't help. It's also the fact that they're troop carriers. It sucks when an aircraft crash kills the pilot and copilot but it really sucks when a V22 goes down with like 20 people on board.
>Also what is the point when regular helis exist?
Helis can't go 500km/h while carrying an assload of crayon munchers.

Cool. But at this point, why do we even need the human pilot?
With a reliable IFF system in place the computer can fully automate execution of a mission even without human oversight.
Is this what 6th gen fighters will become? Computers with wings?
>>
>>5345289
this is a video from arma 2 realistic mil-sim roleplay after I convinced half the server I absolutely could fly (they're all in the cargo compartment)
>>
>>5405472
Current trend points to pilot with done wingmen.
I think 2 seaters might come back as a drone operator because being a pilot is busy enough already which is why RIO and WSO was a position in the first place until better automation made them redundant in the interceptor role.

The trouble with using AI in an environment as dynamic as combat let alone aerial combat is that we as human beings are still uncomfortable without that human factor making the go-nogo call to engage. Sometimes RoE needs to be updated on the fly and if we can't update said RoE in the critical first hours of a conflict for whatever reason, that's be a problem.
Part of the plot of AC7 involved IFF spoofing, which while it might've been scifi nonsense in the game, is a real concern. That and ground targets don't really have IFF capabilities as it stands.

Another story from ATC school shows how useful it is to have humans around in an emergency.
>Be ATC in ND
>Get call over radio that a pilot picked up an ELT beacon
>LIFR conditions for miles and miles around so aerial search impossible
>B-52 in area mentions that they are equipped to fly at tree top level to get exact position of ELT.
>ATC legally cannot issue clearance that low
"Spooky 21 RADAR services terminated, resume own navigation"
>B-52 finds ELT, picks back up IFR flight plan, relays info to ATC
>ATC Relays location in the woods to local PD
>Local PD drives out to nearest road and finds a bar with snow mobiles out front
>2 drunken snow mobilers take the cops out and rescue of pilot completed without further incident after they get him warmed up at the bar.
>Pilot taken to local hospital for minor injuries

Since that war solely exists for the Russians to test their equipment against western tech without the need to attack NATO, they'll probably wait until they're actually ready for deployment. They certainly won't rush it.

The bigger problem is their props are geared together. This means a single point of failure for their both of its engines. Worse still is a failure state
>helicopter engine dies
>rotors autorotate, providing lift
>float down
>plane engine dies
>wings still work
>glide down
>engines fail on Osprey
>props are too small to autorotate
>lifting surfaces aren't sufficient
>fall out of the sky like a brick

There are massive advantages to tiltorotors. They allows an aicraft to operate in similar areas as helicopters, but gives them similar range and speed as airplanes. There are obvious use cases for military or for things like medievac. But the Osprey is the first of its type, and suffers from a fundamental design fly. Simply not having the props gears together would go a long way to making the aircraft safer. Future tilt-rotor aircraft are much less likely to be deathtraps

Fun fact
They had to specifically re-design the wheels of these planes for this shot. At those speeds regular wheels would disintegrate because the water acts basically the same way as concrete. So instead these wheels will spin freely when making contact with the water to greatly reduce the impact forces.
