I've decided to admit to myself that I want to watch anime. Where do I start? I remember people used to make flowcharts for getting into X, so those would be nice. So far I've downloaded (based on recommendations from others):
Steins;Gate
Serial Experiments Lain
Lucky Star

And I like all of them if that gives you an idea of my tastes.
>>
Steins gate is a good intro anime for sure.

Lucky star and lain are more niche for sure.
Lain is for tech nerds and nostalgia, lucky star is full of references to other anime.

You can't really go wrong with the popular classics like Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Attack on Titan etc.

Subs never dubs

code geass is pretty cool. it could also be your entry to mecha anime mainly because the mecha isn't the focus, but it is there in the plot just enough that if that's your style you could go even further that path.
gintama never failed me on the comedy side, seitokai yakuindomo if you like sex jokes every 30 seconds

I would recommend a more grounded anime that doesn't require you to understand wacky anime tropes just yet.
Some examples from different genres: Death Note, Frieren, Haikyuu, Apothecary Diaries, Violet Evergarden

Ashita no Joe

Japanese culture is dead thanks to globalization and technology. Watching anime is like watching family home videos of a dead family member.

Death note is a great anime to start with. If you like it, you could then go on to watch Monster. Both have a good english dub, so I suggest you watch them with it.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Cowboy Bebop yet, it's a classic.

It sounds like any anime works for you. Thriller/sci-fi, sci-fi sci-fi and moe.
If you like fist fighting, Ashino No Joe is the best
If you like sword fighting, Vagabond is great
If you like comedy, call me a faggot but I half agree with >>1501966, at least manga. Half because around chapter 300ish the composition was getting messy for me, and I dropped it. I suspect anime is a lot better in that regard. Also Cromartie High School is great
If you like romance, My Monster Secret/Love was nice.
If you like thriller, 21 Century Boy is great.
If you are even picker than that, ask chatGPT.

Samurai Champloo: only a single season too.
>>
>>1501958
It doesn't but that's not an issue.
Go watch some staples, and don't be afraid to try new series.
Death Note (definitely start with this one)
K-On
Higurashi
Evangelion
Made in Abyss
FMA: Brotherhood
Movies: Spirited Away, Your Name

watch good anime, not moeshit

Never been to this board, so sorry if mass-replying is frowned upon here.

I've seen Steins Gate a lot when looking for popular anime, I'll give it a watch. I am a tech nerd, lol. I'll check out some of those other ones. I studied Japanese in college so subs will probably help.
>>1501966
Sounds neat. I remember my cousin was into mecha anime a long time ago. I also played a Danganronpa game and it was neat
>>
>>1502080
>>1501968
That's the kind of thing I'm looking for; I'll check those out.
>>1501969
Never heard of that one

I remember that trick from years ago, lol.
>>1502001
Neat, thanks
>>1502032
Those look cute
>>1502038
That's one of the first ones I downloaded; the description makes it sound really good
>>1502042
It is a pretty wide spread, lol. Honestly I think I might like a romance anime; I'll check the others out, too.
>>1502045
Death Note seems like a popular recommendation. I'll have to watch it. I also downloaded Evangelion and plan to watch it. A lot of people I know like Spirited Away and Your Name.
>>
>>1501958
skip slice of life stuff until you're used to anime tropes otherwise it might turn you off. You're gonna want to watch some "normalfag bait" shows first like
>steins gate
>cowboy bebop
>death note
>jojo
>full metal alchemist brotherhood (you can try the original but it deviates from the source material)
>attack on titan
>demon slayer
>goblin slayer
>kono suba
>one punch man
>mob psycho
>samurai champloo
you can start with these but there are a lot better shows that you might now appreciate if you watch these first to familiarize yourself with anime
>>
>>1502032
I can't imagine watching the endless 8 as your first anime
