for those who buy webmanga, which site doesn't censor too much? I honestly prefer the black bar than the invisibly dick if that's my last resort. Renta sucks now a day
>>
>That Blood Link ending
Holy shit that was bad. I feel like my mind is a dirty mouth and I need some mouthwash, something to get the bad taste out.
>>
>>2886397
That depends on the publisher not the store. And even among one publishers titles, the rules seem really random. In rare cases you get less censored (thin bars not full whiteout) R18version, cmoa has some. Aside from that it just varies from full glowy whiteout and censored assholes to scratchy whiteout and visible assholes to very light but visible dick outlines etc. Recently I read 3 or 4 Herz&Craft titles and they each had different level of censorship (and image quality), I have no idea why is that so random.

So basically vampires are immortal, they cannot die, not even if their bodies get completely destroyed. Well there's an afterlife, that means any non vampire that does die is permanently separated from the vampires. Everything was going well and sweet until in the last chapters the author decided to introduce the idea that one of the side couples, a fan favorite, which happens to be a vampire and a non vampire, the non vampire wouldn't be sired. Meaning his partner would spend the eternity mourning him. That wasn't even on anyone's minds until the asshole author introduced the idea. And then the author decided to take a step further and during the mandatory Q&A at the end of the comic said that the same thing happens to the main couple in the second half of the comic.

Basically, what the fuck are you doing? Why?

I was expecting some cheesy happy ending with how batshit insane the plot was. From romeo and julian to malepreg health issues drama to what seemed like a sitcom, I expected the mindless insane plot to keep twisting and changing the main protagonists for a few years, you know for the issues to get solved. I didn't expect at all to end now with the last page being the marriage of the side couple that just had the idea of permanent separation etched into the story.

I expected this to be like a nice bag of potato chips I could just consoom every once in a while.

It's a good, with a nice balance of character reintroduction and smut, and it's pleasant to see Gene slowly growing more dominant and assertive.
>What the hell is going on in Gene's mind?
Probably experiencing homesickness now that he doesn't have to worry about surviving on a day to day basis. I'm 100% positive he will return to the village now, since he looks way older in Rumspringa and way too young when he was depicted leaving in this chapter.
>Also I was promised riba, where is it?

I'm not sure what you mean? I'm pretty sure pic related and the one you're showing are supposed to be set on the same day. I think it's just Kaya's change in artstyle and design for Gene that made him look older to you. Besides, Rumspringa is set years later and Gene is clearly not in the village. I doubt he's coming back.
>>
>>2886583
I forgot the pic
>>
>>2886454
I susupect he's just feeling restless, he misses them but also feels he's not making the best of his life without them - he probably ran away with intention to see /everything/ he couldn't before, and yet he's beginning to settle just a couple hundred miles from home, in a city he probably already had his rumspringa in. Maybe that's why he's so reluctant to take the long-term modeling job and why I think he might want to travel and experience more and maybe come back to Trevor after that.
>>
>>2886586
I think so too. When the teacher mentioned most amish kids usually just go back to their villages, Gene didn't bat an eye. It was mentioning how close he still is from his old home that startled him.
It makes me sad though, knowing how Trevor is, if Gene decides to go away he'd probably just give his blessings and let him go, as unhappy as that would make him.

What does the thread think of captive prince? I started reading it when the third + final volume came out and folks weren’t kidding about it starting out as livejournal fiction from the 2000s. Felt like an ai no kusabi knockoff but not as entertaining. The 2nd volume imo is the best of the trilogy, by the last book I was tapped out of the plot since Laurent’s character pulled a 180 and went from a scheming frigid snarker to a woobie with a cliche abuse backstory. It’s like someone took elements of ai no kusabi, kaze to ki no uta, and other (better) BL and wrote a book series that’s not as satisfying as what inspired it.
>>
>>2886637
It is definitely overrated now that BL novels are getting translated in droves. It was only popular back when BL tropes in novels being more of a rarity since no one was translating BL novels then. But it is still better than 99% of the BL fantasy isekai novels so its not entirely devoid of value.

>ai no kusabi knockoff
CP is far superior than ai no kusabi in terms of writing and characterization, if only because it copies from better sources (Lymond Chronicles). If there was one thing Pascat absolutely nailed it was executing a believable enemies-to-lovers trope.
The first volume is fine, and your correct that Prince's Gambit is best, but it all goes down hill fast from there though and the third volume reads very much like a rushed job that ends on a whimper instead of an exhilarating climax.
Certain character developments that feel like they were included for woke points break the basic immersion or don't logically follow from events depicted in the narrative, e.g. both leads coming to the epiphany that slavery is ipso facto immoral, despite never voicing such a thought and both being the rulers of societies reliant on the salve trade.
Another problem is that almost every character outside the two leads are pretty thread-bare, the main antagonists being the most egregious case (seriously, the Reagent doesn't even have a name).

You can definitely tell it's written by a female slash fic writer, and though disappointing overall, there were moments to enjoy.

>charcters being so 'sensitive' they cum from barely any stimulation. It's not cute or sexy it's just premature ejaculation. That said PE can be a good trope sometimes.
>shy virgin prostitutes/incubs, after two or three manga of the sort it's damn boring.

I’ve been busy so i’ve barely read anything besides some chinese webnovels and academic books. >>
>>2886654
I forgot about the weird moral whiplash the final book had; like the nobles acting disgusted that the Regent was fucking little boys even though it was established that both nations had teenage sex slaves. Even Damian thought about fucking a teenage slave boy too. There’s also how quickly Damian got over Laurent nearly had him raped in public + whipped, and became all doting once he found out the Regent abused him as a kid and he finally felt bad about killing his brother in the war. Ai no kusabi isn’t the best book either, but it doesn’t pull the same morality play as captive prince nor does it have a fanbase and author that hypes it up as win for representation.

So I've just gotten into Chinese homo novels, and I was recommended to make a twitter account to follow the translations.

At the moment I can confirm that most of the things that "danmei twitter" hypes up is unironically shit. 2ha, global examination and yuwu are not worth spending time on
>>
"woke points" lmfaooo
>>
>>2886665
Meatbun (Yuwu/2ha writer) is a hilarious danmei writer, in that she went from a relatively popular str8 romance writer to a massively popular danmei writer without changing her habit of stuffing her writing with tropes and kinks that appeal to her, like her older lady/young guy fetish gelling with her love of older shou/young gong. Textbook example of “I only write for myself and readers are free to enjoy it”. She’s no Priest or Feitian, but her melodramatics are nice in a way where I can turn my brain off and enjoy how outrageously horny herself and her characters are.
>>
>>2886665
Danmei twitter has serious shit taste in everything. These threads recommendations are pretty good at finding the actual good stuff however.

General rule of thumb is any transmigration novels starts with going back in time, going into a novel or a franchise and so on are usually not worth it. Too bad they are pretty much 80% of what is translated these days. MXTX's a competent writer and scum villain is still her worst work anyway. Any novel staring some kind of death game or riddle answering trials. Chinese danmei already have issues with keeping their main characters believable and these kind of stories are glorified riddle books. Anything involving beastmen that aren't folklore related are always shit. Any crime syndicate novel where the main uke is not part of the crime syndicate is just asking for abuse porn. And personal notice but any novel with a title getting suspiciously long winded like isekai. There might be other stuff too.
>>
>>2886677
Basically 99% isekai are shit regardless of genre, avoid unless the rec comes from a trusted source
>>
>>2886689
Isekai is my insta-drop trope. Same shit all the time and the "fish out of water" trope is done better when the "other" comes to our world desu
>>
>it was established that both nations had teenage sex slaves
>Damian got over Laurent nearly had him raped in public + whipped
Laurent never raped him, only whipped him. He was supposed to lose and get raped at the wrestling match but Laurent had nothing to do with that.
>became all doting once he found out the Regent abused him as a kid and he finally felt bad about killing his brother in the war
You got the timeline confused, he only found out Laurent was molested by his uncle near the end of the last book, long after they already had sex.
And the reason he starts sympathizing with Laurent is that in the climax of CP he realises he was effectively bought for the purposes of killing Laurent, and that Laurent was aware of being forced to cohabit with his would-be assassin by the Reagant. Damien's flirtations in the baths with Laurent, becomes reinterpreted from Laurents pov as credible threats of rape.
> it was established that both nations had teenage sex slaves
There's a difference between fucking 17 year-olds and boys aged 9-10 that haven't even hit puberty. Even the Greeks had standards.
> Even Damian thought about fucking a teenage slave boy too
Wasn't that slave 17 or 18?
>The dude lived as a slave so it makes sense.
Except he never thinks that, he just realizes that not everyone treats slaves as well as they're treated in Akielos.
>Ai no kusabi isn’t the best book either, but it doesn’t pull the same morality play as captive prince nor does it have a fanbase and author that hypes it up as win for representation.
And it's still a worse book. The purple prose, shallow characterisation, the Stockholm romance, the character assassination of Guy to make Iason look like the better option by comparison. The only reason people still remember this is nostalgia and the ova, which had unusually good art direction for a BL at that time.
CP has problems sure, but the main romance i.e. the foundation of this entire genre, wasn't one of them.

He doesn't think slavery is the problem, he thinks bad masters are the problem and nothing beyond that. After the first volume slavery is barely mentioned in PG and in KR it appears for about 3 sentences. It's clear the author didn't really think through the implications of the slavery angle and so had both leads magically turn into abolitionists so that we can have an unequivocally happy ending.

>Where did you even get that?
Here's the last substantive thing Damian said to Laurant regarding slavery, it takes place in the middle of CP:

>Damen said, ‘One of the handlers took a heated iron from the fire to test whether the slave would obey an order to stay silent while he used it. I don’t know if that is usual practice in this place, but good men don’t torture slaves in Akielos. Slaves are trained to obey in all things, but their submission is a pact: they give up free will in exchange for perfect treatment. To abuse someone who cannot resist—isn’t that monstrous?’

This is Damien's apologia for slavery to Laurant, who calls Akielos "barbaric" for training slaves.
In other words, he condemns the treatment of slaves, but not the system itself and even defends it against critics. This is why his abrupt turn as an abolitionist in KR is out of character, because it's never set up as something he opposes on principle.

Nearly all manga have some kind of bonus content, and most have at least two types: one special bonus for physical and one for digital. From those many have multiple 'bonus inserts' for each store, for example one for animate (physical), one for toranoana (physical), one for amazon (digital/physical) and one for cmoa (digital). If you're a super die-hard fan you buy the same volume multiple times and collect them all, like our true mvp Stigmata translator who went and cought them all and posted in the last extra chapter. Usually the authors/publishers tweets promoting the volume will list what sort of bonuses each store will have.

I don't usually post on /y/ but lately I've been trying to find yaoi manga to read but they've all been SHIT, I've read a bunch of yuri, and most of them were good, but every single yaoi manga I read is just boring generic thrash or just overly sexual, why is there no equivalent of "Cute girls doing cute things with yuri undertones" but for boys? like a "yuru yaoi", I'm a gay boy with a boyfriend so I'm not being biased or anything, any recommendations for good yaoi manga? like, Itou Hachi but instead of yuri it's yaoi, or like yuru yuri/yuyushiki except instead of yuri it's yaoi, do you get what I'm saying?

If you want good BL, I'd recommend looking at the chart. But it sound like you waver more on the cutesy, wholesome side, so try these (also pic):

Harukaze Etranger
Itoshi No Nekokke
Here and There and Us
Our Not So Lonely Planet
Boku-tachi wa Mada Aoku
Don't Call Me Dirty
Ero Yume Aquarium
Chicken Heart Serenade
Can I Buy Your Love From A Vending Machine?

Almost anything by Fujitobi and Mita Ori

On the webtoon side, I'de recommend Guang Xiang, Here You Are and All About Lust.

Man, I wish there was more of Zettai, Fukujuu Meirei.

Yeah, I can't think of anything exactly like that. You could try Boku To which is by a yuri author. Or manga with crossdressing or shota like Ponytail Shota and Shota Oni.

I finished Word of Honor and found episode 37 online (more like a 11 minute episode with 7 minutes of post-36 content and a music video. it’s teeny).
I think I’ve spoiled other wuxia for myself because this will be my point of comparison with anything else I watch. I loved it so much. It had nothing sexual and yet.
Now back to Korean live action and the random BLCD. Or Taiwanese BL. They say that’s the grail.
>>
>>2886783
If you want only undertones of gay you might just want to check out fujobait content like sports anime, the Daily Life of High School Boys or Osomatsu-san, among others.

As for actual BL, check out our thread’s unanimous god-tier favorites like Go For It, Nakamura!, Mikami to Sato, Dekoboko Sugar Days, or Tashiro-kun Kimi tte Yatsu wa, which are all light, funny rom-coms with no sex.

Futekiya has officially released several unusual slice of life BL like Cat Boys (not furry I promise), I Want You Back, Gatapishi, and Here and There and Us, but I’m not sure if any of them have leaked yet. A subscription is cheap and well worth it, though.

>Can I Buy Your Love From A Vending Machine?
Not that anon but this was my favorite thing I've read in a long time. Wholesome and cute without feeling infantilized or diabetes-inducing. I liked how solid the guys looked too
>>
>>2886783
For the genuine "cute guys doing cute things that never full on goes gay" experience:
>High School Boys Are Hungry Again Today (Exactly "cute guys doing cute things" with a little bromance and nothing else, highly recommended)
>Nan Hao and Shang Feng
>Gokuraku Café (warning for dated art style, but cute story)
You also might have some luck with these tags on MangaUpdates:
>Female Demographic with Male Lead
>BL Subtext
Adding to the BL recs, some more wholesome/soft BL:
>Our Dining Table by Mita Ori
>Koi wa Kamen no Uchigawa ni
>A Miniature Garden Romance
>Sasaki to Miyano (art style has a yuri vibe I'd say)
>Seven Days (Dated art but story holds up surprisingly well)
>My Sempai by Hebiko Habuyama
>Wanna Try Dating Inoue
>Kinou Nani Tabeta (Older guys but VERY wholesome)
>Negative-kun to Positive-kun (might have a mild sex scene, I can't remember well)
>maybe Toritan? Can anyone comment on the sexual content?
>>2886883
Good recs but I have to point out that Mikami and Sato jerk off together once and the characters do have sex in Deko Boko. Both scenes are cute and not gratuitous though.
If anon doesn't mind a very mild sex scene near the end like those two, I'd also recommend:
>Merry Checker
>Seishun Radio Pinchers
>Tonari no Metallersan
The sex scenes in those are so mild that you can probably kid yourself that they never happened. Shouldn't be any heaving and pounding in them, minimal genitalia shots, etc.
Has a detailed sex scene but emotionally yuri-tier:
>Link and Ring
>Tasogare Outfocus
>Zanzou Slow Motion (Tasogare's better sequel)
>Secret XXX

Finally a title I didn't know before. I almost didn't read it because of the art style but I have it a shot and liked it more than I expected to. The yurifag will hate it though.
>reading the manga, nice setting and concept
>wait how is this not BL, the adorable autist who loves stop motion animation is clearly going to be the uke come on
>at least the obvious jerk seme baseballer is canon bisexual I guess
>obvious jerk seme pulls out the "if you really like me, you'll let me do you" line
>oh boy, hereitcomes.jpg
>then the autist pushes him off and chews him out for real despite being smaller and cuter
>the obvious seme reacts rude/embarrassed rather than with violence
>apologizes in a cute and thoughtful way (pic related)
>they become real friends after this, NOT a romance
>seme guy is touchy feely but it comes off more like playful banter
>second volume introduces a second seme-type
>gay film director who has varied preferences rather than "me see uke, me horny"
>but his storyline is not about being gay or fucking anyone
>it's about reconnecting with his dad thanks to the autist's help
>TL;DR - An adorable autist's pure love of an old children's TV show leads him to an exciting creative career and a supportive, sexually diverse found family.
I can't say it was good but I enjoyed it. The plot was over the top but in a nostalgic way. I didn't like the adorable autist's stalker in his backstory but that plot didn't overstay its welcome. Not at all what I expected from one of the OG "dorito chins and yaoi hands" mangakas.
Not a good rec for a yurifag though. Even if it only sets up obvious tropes to subvert them, the old-school BL smell is too strong.

Matsumoto Noda's Moon and Wolf was flat out good. I don't think anyone disliked it, though part of that could be that the final two-parter (about humans) was amazing.

I chose hard mode so I read Sakuragari since the thread mentioned it a few times and it’s even the cover of this one. Reading it reminded me of June and old shoujo that straddled the line between BL and shoujo (think anything by the year 24 ladies). It’s a very gothic story complete with almost every character having some weird psychosexual quirk: crossdressing, incest, S/M, it checks off every box for gothic literature. Souma was a textbook example of a deadly bishounen, and I like that trope so it wasn’t bad; I was burning to get to the next chapter to learn more about him and his fucked up family. By the final chapter when Masataka forgives Souma for constantly raping him I was worried the story would end with them becoming a couple and living happily together. Thankfully, it didn’t end that way, as both men were able to come to terms with their own issues and parted ways, a bittersweet ending. I think Sakuragari is good enough to put in the recommendation pastebin.

Not either of the anons, but MDSZ is the novel The untamed is based on. I can't recommend the drama itself because apart from the pretty leads it's not a good adaptation, and not even a good show.

While the drama was still being filmed, someone leaked the script and the key scenes, which showed that they were trying to change it into a heterosexual harem centered around one of the female characters. It led to the months of endless death threats from the fans and silence from the crew. In the end they did change it back to "bromance" and removed the female actress' scenes, you can tell it by the weird editing and her role in the story.

Which genres are you interested in? As for Sci-fi I recommend
Sci-fi
>Can Ci Pin

Let's talk about some other Priest stuff that haven't been talked about a lot in these threads.

>The Revitalization of Fuyao Sect
My personal favourite. Something about the story of a ragtag bunch of misfit children with wildly different personalities and abilities band together reminds me of the shonen formula. Except gay. Highly reccomended.

>Sha Po Lang
This might be the most insane couple concept I have ever seen. Chinese Steampunk setting so that is new setting. This is the rare times where the main love interests might be the better one of the duo. Step father fucking adopted son story. Way better than it has any rights to be.

This is barely scratching the surface of the things Priest has written. I am currently reading Silent Reading and Guardian. If other anon are still hesitant in getting into any other danmei aside from the regularly shilled, Priest has a massive backlog and all of them are good so far.
>>
>>2886975
>The Revitalization of Fuyao Sect

Just wait until you get to Can Ci Pin, I consider it to be her strongest danmei work that has the best world building.

>I think Sakuragari is good enough to put in the recommendation pastebin.
I'm reading this on anon's recommendation, and so far I'm impressed how relatively grounded it is so far. Unfortunately I've already come across a major stumbling block in ch.4 and that is that the quickness with which Masataka accepts Souma's offer post-rape feels incredibly contrived, all for a brother he ostensibly hates. Will continue riding this out but things don't look good so far, especially with the once brazen and confident Masataka now turning into a nervous, blushing maiden.
>>
>>2887001
I’m the anon that read Sakuragari, I mostly said Sakuragari is good enough for the pastebin but not the chart because personally I like melodramatic showa era shoujo like heart of thomas and kaze to ki no uta, so Sakuragari entertained me by having the same moody atmosphere. It’s good enough for people that like that sort of story, but I know it’s not for everyone. So just like the other BL flavor josei/shoujo I think Sakuragari belongs in the pastebin rather than the chart.

I'm on chapter 7 now. One annoying tendency I'm noticing is that whenever Masaka is traumatized, raped or humiliated in some way, the narrative almost immediately forgoes almost any lingering anguish or contemplation about the event from Masaka's pov in favor of shifting all attention onto Souma's pain and thereafter doesn't dwell much on the incident.
Also, I'm sorry, but the fucking chutzpah of this author to have the mc just read a bunch of poems post-rape/brother's death and then utter lines like "I had never really consider how my rapist might feel before". Fuck off

Because they're better written. It's just that simple. The vast majority of BL is limited to one volume, which means there just isn't enough room to both introduce complex characters with their own lives outside of having a boyfriend, and then develop them as individuals while trying to pull of a convincing romance all within the constraints of 180 pages. Add to that the introduction of secondary characters or even just world-building and is it really a wonder the vast majority of BL has been relying on repetitive, recycled clichés and tropes.

I agree about constraints of the genre, but the better written part is more due to very limited amount of gen works that get popular enough to get a shipping fandom. By the time it gets to the western audience it's already maybe 0,05% of all the gen manga that gets created, and of that I doubt even 1% gets popular enough to have prominent shipping content. BL has much less competition, it's finally getting recognized beyond 'stuff you can do when you can't draw normal manga' on par with erodoujins, but it's still easier to break through as opposed to shonen where nearly every aspiring mangaka wants to become the next Oda or Togashi despite knowing how shit working for Jump is. By the time a shonen or other bait gets noticed by fujo, it has to be at least decently successful as a manga in general, so no wonder they generally have good characters/good writing/well done worldbuilding.

Okay, so I've finally completed Sakura Gari (this whole thread seems to have turned into a review for this manga).
Should probably cogitate a little before making this post, but honestly I can't see my assessments changing much in the future.
Cut to the chase, I'll second >>2886954 and recommend it for the pastebin >>2886314.
All my previous criticisms stand and I'll just paste some quick reviews I've read that agree with my sentiments:

>1. Everyone just can't help but rape others.
>2. They can't help it.
>3. Main character is always apologizing for how horrible a person he is
>4. Main character was told he grew (positively) from his experiences and that one person "changed him". Said experiences were multiple rapes. That "one person" mentioned was his rapist. Main character falls in love with rapist. He grew from the experience. This is a great manga
>5. All characters are empty people. Their motivation is either to have sex with main character's rapist or have sex with the main character. Or they are the main character.

Additionally, I'm not a fan of how the separation was handled. I get that Souma needs to be the one to cut ties as a necessity for his character growth, but surely there was a way to portray that without having to undermine Masataka's character by having him frantically plead and whimper like a Stockholmed uke.

What changed my mind was pic right here. The final lovemaking scene was depicted with such tender combination of intimacy, passion AND RESTRAINT that it almost singlehandedly redeemed the entire experience. It also needs be remarked that the art is phenomenal, perfectly capturing that gothic romanticism of the Taishou Era. I also appreciated that the character designs mostly belied the seme/uke archetypes, being more boyish than feminine.

All in all, I don't think Sakura Gari is a great manga (it's basically the superior Tourou no Ori). But it' certainly unique, and will probably occupy my thoughts for some time.

The scanlation group did an amazing job with the research and clean up of scans. The translation notes that compared three different types of translations for different poems impressed me with the effort they put in. I was disappointed with the other group that did the last few chapters since there was an obvious drop in quality. Still, considering EOPs won’t be getting this series ever because of the content so what we have is excellent. I don’t even think any publisher would be able to top the level of work a fan group did, example being Golden Kamuy’s fan scans always offering historical and pop culture notes that the official volumes lack.

>EOPs won’t be getting this series ever because of the content so what we have is excellent
If we are talking about content alone, I don't really see a reason why this wouldn't get picked up by a publisher. Sublime already publishes stuff like Caste Heaven and MADK, which makes Sakura look tame in terms of violence and rape.

I can even see Seven Seas picking this up since none of the rape/ sex scenes are actually explicit (no genitalia). Sure, there's plenty of violence, torture and blood, but they've already got stuff like Eternal Heart by Syundei (pic), so that's not really an obstacle either.
>>
>>2887246
This. I think they won't pick up because it's old, not the content.
>>
>>2887246
In 2012, the sublime twitter said they "couldn't risk" licensing this work because of the underage rape. Since they have done MADK maybe their standards have changed and with enough fan demand they might even pick up sakuragari. I might order the japanese reprint so I can read it in better quality
>>
>>2887249
>sublime twitter said they "couldn't risk" licensing this work because of the underage rape.
As I said, they've already got Caste Heaven. Though to be perfectly honest, I actually think Seven Seas would be the best bet. They seem to be more partial to the alphabet crowd, and the marketing for a work by an award-winning, x-gender mangaka would write itself.
>>
>>2887252
Honestly, I don’t want to see the usual wishy washy reviews that BL gets from english reviewers where they get hung up on how ~problematic~ the story is for sakuragari. Again, Caste Heaven, a 7 volume series where an underage teenager gets repeatedly raped and tortured and falls in love with his rapist, has been on the selves for years now. Apart from getting savaged in reviews on irrelevant blogs there has been no blowback.
I agree with >>2887247 that probably the biggest obstacle is it's age. Almost every review and bl forum I've checked refers to this as a "masterpiece" and the mangakas best work, but I have no idea how much lore/ fandom actually surrounds this property.

>like what?
The majority of it is slight changes in the beginning that keep certain specifics vague where they would cause contradictions or make circumstances less believable, such as Mio never calling Shun once he left the island. Most of the big changes happen in the second half though, including:

>Shun's is no longer verbally abusive towards Mio, examples like shouting "That's not it, you idiot!" become "That's not what I'm talking about, genius" in a sarcastic monotone.
>Shun's confession is more direct.
>In the original Sakura mentions Shun's father's health isn't in serious danger, but would still like Shun to come home now for fear he never will, thus lowering the stakes and deflating the tension. This line is changed to "If he doesn't see him [father] soon, I fear he'll never see him again", keeping things vague but retaining the tension. The impetus of an immediate parental death also now justifies Mio's desperation in convincing Shun to visit his father.
>Slight tweaks to make Mio and Sakurako's confrontation on the beach clearer.
>"You should treat girls gently" gets changed to"You shouldn't crush people's spirits", though this one's just my preference.
>During the sex scene, that retarded "We can use two condoms" line gets changed to "Maybe we could try it", "it" being the referent for Mio topping.
>The "only you" trope gets heavily downplayed throughout, but the most noticeable line is after they have sex: "Even though I like girls, I fell in love with you Shun" gets changed to "I thought I ONLY liked girls, but then I met you and fell in love."
>>
>>2887392
In terms of performances, Shun's voice actor sounds too old in comparison with the seiyū, though I got used to it after 5 min.
I prefer Mio's English VA. Matsuoka was way too histrionic and overly emotional in his deliveries that killed any subtlety and reduced the character to a naked manic pixie dream boy. Briner is a bit more subdued and reserved, but this actually gives Mio nuance and makes the character's time-skip transformation way less jarring.
Everyone else is standard fare, and the English inflexions don't quite align with the general sound design or score.

Still, personally, it was a better experience for me.
>>
>>2887392

I started a while ago but only got to read most of it now, does it count as hardmode? Anyway it's a rec. So after discussion around Aien Catharis I decided I want to find another manga with properly drawn kimono, and I stumbled upon Ima Ichiko's Gengetsurou Kitan. It's a looong running series coming out in snail pace since 2002. Each chapter handles some kind of thematic ghost story usually turning out to be very human in nature. The plot is set somewhere in the 1930’s and the main character, Shouichiro is a wealthy miso paste merchant who falls in love with a taikomochi (male entertainer akin to geisha). It indeed has one of the best drawn kimono I've seen in BL. But more than that it's one of the most Japanese manga I've read, down to all the old-fashioned elements of etiquette you normally only learn for tea ceremony (hence why I care). The characters move, dress and speak appropriately for their social class, old items are drawn and used properly, the societal norms are there but approached in a sensible way. Always refreshing, given how often you get servants casually stomping into Japanese rooms, tatami sized like 90’s yaoi beds, and characters speaking like they can magically forsee how the societal norms will change in the future.

Okay, but I guess not all anons fap to the Japanese traditions as much as I do. I hope you at least like plot-oriented stories and slow-burn because damn is it slow. The romance feels almost like a sideplot to the ghost-themed mysteries that the manga is mostly about. It’s at the same time oldschool BL and not really – on one hand you get the handsome, rich young master as seme and a poor entertainer as uke, the uke is quite adamant about his straightness and the lowkey molesting is played for laughs or fanservice most of the time. On the other hand, they aren’t drawn with the stereotypical size difference, and their dynamic is fun to read - they treat each other as equals, uke is not at all feminine (in fact he sleeps with various women over the course of the manga, often landing him in troublesome situations), and MC (seme) despite his societal position is often presented as silly and too romantic for his own good. I grew to like both of them. MC, Shouichiro is good-willed but a bit naïve and stubborn, while Yosaburo, ML can be fickle and mean but in the end, they balance each other out and their push-pull games are cute. The recurring side characters are also likeable and very lifelike, many times I’ve felt like I’ve met this kind of person before.
Availability-wise it has an English translation, no idea how good it is though. In original it’s a wonderful high-level moon exercise, full of idiomatic expressions, symbolic ques, heavily contextual expressions and paneling that doesn’t aid you in guessing what’s going on at times. By this I mean it takes a LONG time to read and understand even with good reading comprehension, I’ve seen Jap ppl complaining it's hard to follow. Personally, I find it worth the effort if only because I like Jap idioms, but it’s not a light read.
Who would I rec it to? People who like more retro manga and complain about too much focus on romance and sex in modern BL, as well as those really into Jap culture.
>>
>>2887646
Okay, one last graphic in Ima's charmingly retro style.

Momo to Manji author accusing Bena's author of plagiarism. Thoughts?
>>
>>2887688
I get where she's coming from, at least visually, since I'm not up to date with Bena. If the author draws in a generic style no one thinks twice when someone else draws almost the same, but given Sawa's peculiar way of adapting traditional paintbrush-like lineart and the way she draws backgrounds, looking at Bena does make it seem VERY inspired. She mentions that there's no tracing involved, but rather reusing very similar kimono coordinations and backgrounds, and while it can be argued they use the same references, well, it is a bit suspicious. That said, it's hard to call using a certain style plagiarism and imo it's easy to tell them apart even despite the similarities. From the first vol of Bena I can't really see the plot/character similarities, maybe it changes in the second? Depending on that it's either riding on Sakura's artistic research or actually ripping off her whole work.

I couldn't find a one to one comparison, but hopefully, pic will suffice. On maybe one or two pages the art and linework look almost identical, but once you actually get into the manga itself, the distinction becomes clear. Sawa's pages are stuffed to the brim with detail whereas Bena has quite a profuse amount of white space, and some of the linework borders on chicken scratch in some panels. Bena furthermore makes generous use of stark and dramatic lighting to emphasize form and danger, particularly in its opening chapter to convey the titular character's feralness. Sawa's drawings and inking are, by comparison, far more consistently refined, though keeps to a flat, 2-dimensional style.
>>
>>2887720
>plot
I can see where they're similar in artwork, but are even the plot similarities? Aside from both being set in Edo.
>>
>>2887721
Yeah, and the way they draw faces (especially eyes) is very different. The fabric and its folds on the other hand are really similar, then again they're both imitating the traditional painting style, it's not exactly Sakura thing per se.
>>
>>2887724
Sakura said that it seems like Bena's author is only slightly changing names and details but the characters and events are similar. To be honest I can't see it either.
>>
>>2887729
>characters and events are similar
Literally where? Feels like she's just grasping at straws since you can't really accuse someone of plagiarizing an arstyle.
>>
>>2887731
No idea, the part where main character was sexually abused in the past and Bena is a lovable idiot that works with children? That they live together in a machiya?? That level of similarity happens all the time though, so yeah, it seems like a stretch.
>>
>>2887726
Adding to my own post and general confusion, Sakura is far from the only artist that uses mix of past and modern style to draw characters/kimono, for example there's Nadeshiko Rin who's been doing that for even longer and she seems to be on perfectly good terms with Sakura. She's also published multiple well known reference books about Edo fashion that Bena's author might have used as well.
>>
>>2887688
Sakura sawa seemed to be a chill mangaka so I’m surprised she’s starting an argument over stylistic similarities in manga, especially on the tweet announcing Bena’s release in French. If every mangaka get butthurt that someone drew similarly to them the manga industry would collapse. It almost comes off as her being jealous Bena gets compared to her work + it getting a physical release while Momo and Manji is digital only on Futekiya. I hope this resolves peacefully, but I’m already losing respect for Sawa.
>>
I stumbled upon this Korean web series called "Boy Next Door" and even though it's not actual BL, it's hilarious. It's got a less hilarious webtoon manhwa. Cast chemistry in comedy is very hard but the leads and supporting cast nailed it. It's not a cute romance like You Make Me Dance or To My Star. It pokes fun at a lot of Korean romance tropes like watching fireworks, living together and "wrong time, wrong place" shenanigans. Finishing it, I wish they were actually a couple but the author has said it's a bromance.
Still, if you want to watch something fun and light, this is great.
>>
>>2887760
Didn't Momo&Manji get physical release in France too? Or is Bena getting paper Eng version? But yeah, it seems super awkward/mean to suddenly start this discussion in the west by randomly replying to a publishing news. She mentioned it before in her Jap asks but in much more reasonable words. Even if it's a case of two people with too similar interests getting cross over it, there's better ways to adress these issues than that.

>>
>>2887914
>False
True, riba just offers more possibilities. There’s only so many times a couple can repeat strict top/bottom roles before the sex becomes repetitive and boring to watch. Dearest Cop and Blue Sky Complex really suffer from this now, to the point where I just speed read through them because every sex scene is the same.
And your kidding yourself if you think western fans are the autistic ones. Imagine getting so triggered you send a mangaka death threats not just for riba or uke x uke, but for switching the naming order on the cover. Even wholesome authors like Azuma Kaya have to issue trigger warnings if they want to draw a riba scene.

I read it and I loved it, easy pick for the pastebin. Iwasawa has an interesting art style; similar to Azama Kaya where they borrow some elements from retro animanga but inject enough uniqueness where it doesn’t feel like an exact 1:1 emulation like Syundei. I’m interested in how normalized homosexuality was in all boys school in the 20th century so this series was a treat for a history nerd like me. Iwasawa’s handling of the boys’ reaction to the rise in nationalist fervor and the incoming war was good; rather than having them throwin themselves into it you can see the unique way each of them rebelled and mourned the changes their society was going through.

Blue period has a male crossdresser who loves being a man and having a dick, he just wants to wear dresses and pretty clothes. He also loves a woman despite dating men.

Hypnosis mic has male and female characters, neither of them has identity issues.
If anyone sees transexuals in either of the titles, they should take meds

Twitter is mentally ill, they always force their shit headcanons and forcefully project themselves into the characters. The latest trend is to do it to the few non straight characters we have in non BL media.
And everyone who is sane enough to have a reading comprehension becomes a "hater", the only choice is to always disregard that type of people
>>
>>2888156
I saw already happening with Astolfo so I should have figured something was up, but I don't read blue period so I was confused. In retrospect it was a stupid question

What a heinous thing to do. She could have signed up for a non-danmei BL if she wanted dudes to fawn over her. I assume China's pumping het wuxia out at a tremendous pace.
The only controversy I heard about this show was the wwx actor and his fans getting AO3 banned in China.
>>

Before this thread dies I want to encourage anons to read Neko Samurai as their old-school BL pick. It’s about a wandering uke ronin’s constantly foiled quest to lose his anal virginity. It feels pretty contemporary, or at least I haven’t found any old BL comedy with that kind of meta/po-mo humor that’s now commonplace.

While the show was still being filmed there were rumors of Wen Qing actress using her father's influence and making them change her into Wei Wuxian's love interest who was desired by every guy in the show.
At one point the rumors were no longer just rumors because the leaked script and filmed scenes confirmed that she took over Lan Wanji's role, she got all of his romantic scenes with Wei Wuxian. But she didn't stop there so every guy in the show was in love with her too. In the original script version the show ended with Wei Wuxian telling Lan Wanji to fuck off because he would be looking for her.

The fans got extremely mad and started demanding answers, they were ignored so it caused them to threaten to boycott the show (posts had at least 500000 likes on weibo). The staff started getting death threats and constant harassment online.
Months later they released a statement claiming they had been always sticking to the book, and how there would be no drama original romance, just brotherhood.
However you still can see Wen Qing in the scenes she wasn't present originally, but each of those scenes ended abruptly or was interrupted, the editing is all over the place when she is involved.
The actress is pretty disliked in the Chinese fandom for being unprofessional and rude.

There are others shows in this vein, like Kimi to Boku, Nijiiro Days and Tanaka-kun is Listless. Something with a bit more plot's Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (god tier boys and gals too) and Gakuen Babysitters. Poco's Udon World and Barakamon's got cute adults with a cute kid dynamic.

The 70s disco opening of Zettai BL makes me want a manga/drama set in the 70s disco era. Or a movie like 69 (based on Ryu Murakami's novel) - but with gay content. It could already exist but I'm unaware.
>>
>>2888349
I would definitely give an arm and a leg to read BL that deals with the ‘60 students movements. You’d think with the massive popularity of (the other) Murakami’s Norwegian Wood the theme would be more popular …
>>
>>2888352
Yeah. At a point, I was inhaling the Haruki Murakami novels. Maybe J-Lit had more serious LGBT rep? I've not really delved too much into reading after college.
Also, I can't think of any BL that deals with post-war politics or even the Lost Decade(s). The Samurai-related era seems popular. Or fictional politics in space, fantasy or far off lands.
Koi to Uso maybe touched on Abe-nomics.
>>
>>2888354
>I can't think of any BL that deals with post-war politics
The only BL I've read that incorporated specific WWII events was pic. It's Taiwanese though, and deals more with the Japanese occupation, which comes into play later since MC's love interest is Japanese.

>>
>>2887769
Anon... I'm pretty sure he/she was making a joke.
>>
>>2888354
Yeah, mainstream Japanese lit makes manga/anime feel conservative when it comes to LGBT stuff. The manga an anon brought up earlier >>2887683 is a good example of BL that draws from outside the animanga tradition, it seems to be referencing the homoerotic depictions of wartime Japanese society in ‘60s post-war novels like Nip the Buds, Shoot the Kids (one of the characters is a teenage gay prostitute who is sexually attracted to men in uniform).

If anons would like a good and accessible J-lit rec, there’s a (mostly) stand-alone section of Mishima’s Forbidden Colors called “Intermezzo” that’s sweet and romantic and a great snapshot of 20th century Japanese gay life. It’s only fourteen pages and the whole book’s up on libgen!

You know what, the story's so short I'm just going to dump it here. Afer all, there are few BL more old-school than this.

MINORU WATANABE was seventeen. His eyes were gentle in his regular, fair, round face; his smile, complete with dimples, was beautiful. He was a sophomore in a certain new-system high school. One of the great bombings late in the war, on March tenth, had reduced to ashes the downtown grocery store that was his family home. His parents and his younger sister were burned to death. Only Minoru survived. He was brought to the home of relatives in Setagaya. The head of that family was a clerk in the Welfare Ministry, for whom it was not easy to assume the added expense of even the single small mouth of Minoru.

When Minoru was sixteen he secured, in answer to an advertisement, a job in a coffee shop. After school he would go there and cheerfully work the five or six hours until ten o’clock. Before examinations he was permitted to go home at seven. His pay was good; one had to admit that Minoru had found a good job.

Not only that, Minoru’s boss became extremely interested in him. His name was Fukujiro Honda. He was a fortyish, woefully thin, quiet, upright man. His wife had left him five or six years earlier, and he still lived alone on the second floor above the shop. One day he called on Minoru’s uncle in Setagaya and asked if he might adopt Minoru. The uncle did not have to think twice. The adoption proceedings were quickly completed; Minoru’s surname became Honda.
>>
>>2888393
Minoru still helped out in the shop once in a while, but that was only because he found it interesting. He lived his student life as he pleased; once in a while he would go with his foster father to dine, or to the theater, or to the movies. Fukujiro liked the traditional theater, but when he went out with Minoru he patiently watched the noisy comedies or the westerns Minoru loved. He bought Minoru boy’s clothes for winter and summer. He bought him skates. For Minoru, this life as something he had never known; his uncle’s children, when they happened to visit him, envied him.
Meanwhile a change had come about in Minoru’s character.

His smiling face did not change, but a love for solitude developed in him. For instance, when he went to a Pachinko pinball parlor, he preferred to go alone. Occasions when he should have been studying, he would go and stand in front of a Pachinko machine for hours on end. He didn’t associate particularly with his school friends.

His still tender sensibilities were pervaded by unbearable fears and revulsions. Somewhat different from the average boys who faced degradation, he shivered at the visions of his future depravity. He burned with the fixed idea that, no matter what, he would come to no good. At night, when he saw the physiognomists sitting under their dim lights in the shadow of a bank or the like, he was filled with fright. Surely a future of bad luck, crime, and evil was visible on his forehead, he thought as he hurried by.

Minoru loved, however, his own clear, smiling face; his future seemed reflected in the pure white line of his teeth when he laughed. His eyes belied his depravity and were even beautiful in their purity. The form that sprang from mirrors at unexpected angles on street corners also showed a fine, boyish neck, neatly barbered. He felt then that he could be at ease so long as his external appearance did not alter, but that respite did not continue for long.

He tried sake, he immersed himself in detective stories, he also learned to smoke. The fragrant smoke coursing luxuriously through his lungs made him feel as if a still unformed, not yet known sense was reaching for expression out of the depths of him. On days when he was distraught by self-revulsion, he prayed that war would start again; he dreamed of the great city wrapped in conflagration. In the midst of that holocaust he felt he might meet his dead parents and sister again.

He loved the momentary excitements and at the same time the hopeless starry nights. He practically wore out a pair of shoes in three months, wandering from neighborhood to neighborhood at night.

He would return from school, eat supper, and change to flashy boyish sport clothes. He would not show his face in the coffee shop until the middle of the evening. His foster father was worried and secretly followed him, but his certainty that the boy went everywhere alone appeased any jealousy he might feel.

Out of that relief and the sad knowledge that, separated by years as they were, he was not the person the boy would have fun with, he withheld his complaints and let him do as he pleased.

One day during the summer vacation, when the sky was filled with clouds and it was too cool to go to the beach, Minoru put on a red aloha shirt with a white palm tree design and set out with the pretext of a trip to the house in Setagaya. The red shirt went well with the boy’s fair skin.

He thought he might enjoy the zoo. He got off the subway at Ueno Station and came out under the statue of Saigo-san. At that moment the sun broke from behind clouds. The high granite staircase gleamed.
>>
>[cutting out the long description of Minoru's wanderings in Ueno Park and the zoo]

Minoru found pleasure in seeing the pair of lions; now he thought he might go home. The popsicle he had been sucking was almost gone. Then he realized that there was a small building near him that he had not yet seen. He went nearer and saw it was the small bird pavilion. The window panes, shaped like stylized chameleons, were broken in a few places.

There was no one in the bird pavilion but a man in a snow-white polo shirt, who had his back to Minoru.

Minoru chewed a slice of gum and looked at a bird whose white bill was bigger than its head. The interior of the building, less than forty yards square, resounded with strange, raucous cries, like the jungle birds in a Tarzan movie, Minoru thought. He looked about to see what bird owned it, and saw it was a parrot. Parrots and parakeets outnumbered the other birds in the small pavilion. The coloring of the wings of the red diamond parakeets was particularly beautiful. The white parrots had all turned their heads and with one wing around the feeding box were hammering away with their hard bills as if they were indeed hammers.

Minoru walked in front of the mynah bird cage. This bird, black of wing, only his face yellow, held his perch with dirty yellow legs. He opened his red bill and, as Minoru wondered what sound he would utter, said, “Hello!”

Minoru answered with a smile. The youth in the white polo shirt near him smiled too and turned in Minoru’s direction. Since Minoru’s head came to about the youth’s eyebrows, the youth had to look downward slightly. Their eyes met and held. Each was surprised by the beauty of the other. The movement of Minoru’s gum-chewing ceased.

“Hello,” the mynah bird said again. “Hello,” the youth said, mimicking. Minoru laughed.

The stranger withdrew his gaze from the cage and lit a cigarette. Not to be outdone, Minoru took a crumpled package of foreign cigarettes from his pocket, hurriedly spat out his chewing gum, and stuck a cigarette in his mouth. The youth lit a match and offered a light.

“Do you smoke, too?” the youth asked, surprised.

“Yeah. We’re not allowed to at school, though.”

“What school?”

“N-Academy.”

“And I—” The youth named a famous private university. “May I ask your name?”

“Minoru.”

“My first name will be enough, too: Yuichi.” The two left the bird pavilion and started walking.

“Your red aloha looks nice,” Yuichi said. Minoru flushed.

They talked of many things. Minoru was charmed by Yuichi’s youth, his artless conversation, and his beauty. He conducted Yuichi to the animal cages that he had seen and Yuichi had not. In about ten minutes they had become like brothers.

This man is one of them, thought Minoru. But just the same how nice it is that so pretty a man should be one of them. I like this man’s voice, his laughter, the movement of his body, his whole body, his smell, everything. I hope we can sleep together soon. With this man I would do anything, let him do anything. I think he’d like what I have for him. He put his hand in his pocket and deftly changed the position of something that was suddenly causing him pain. He felt better. He found a stick of chewing gum in his pocket, took it out, and popped it in his mouth.

“Have you seen the martens? Haven’t you seen them yet?”

Minoru took Yuichi by the hand and led him toward the foul-smelling cages. They kept their hands linked together.
>>
In front of the cage of the Tsushima marten hung a placard explaining, among other things, the habits of the animal: “Early in the morning or at night he is active in the camellia groves sucking the nectar of the blossoms.” There were three of the little yellow animals. One of them stuck the comb of one of the red chicken heads in his mouth and looked warily at the visitors. The eyes of those watching met the eyes of the animal. The eyes outside were certainly looking at a marten, but it was not necessarily true that the marten was looking at human beings. Yuichi and Minoru, however, felt that they loved the eyes of a marten more than they loved human eyes.

The backs of their necks became very warm—the sun was already descending, but its rays were still fierce. Minoru looked behind him. There was nobody around. Thirty minutes after they had met, they kissed lightly and naturally. Now I am very happy, Minoru thought. This boy had been taught nothing but sexual happiness. The world was splendid; there was no one there—only dead silence.

The roar of the lion shook the air. Yuichi lifted his eyes and said: “Oh! We’re in for a shower.”

They noticed the gathering clouds. The sun was soon obscured. When they got to the subway station, the first drops were striking the pavement. They got into the train. “Where are you going?” said Minoru, uneasily, as if he were being left behind. They got off at the station by the shrine. From there they went by streetcar along a different road, which incidentally showed no trace of rain, to the inn in Takagicho where Yuichi had been taken some time ago by the student from his college.

Possessed by the sensual memories of that occasion, Minoru manufactured excuses that kept his foster father at a distance. Fukujiro had no way that he could fill this boy with visions.

He took good care of his relationships within the neighborhood, and when there was a misfortune there, the devout Fukujiro would wrap up a votive offering and set out for the temple. Then he would sit for a long time silently before the Buddha, paying no attention to the other mourners. There was in his wasted frame, so devoid of charm, something that gave the impression of bad luck.

Somehow he could not surrender his place at the counter of the coffee shop to someone else. But it was not a wise policy in this student neighborhood to have such an unsociable old codger at the cash register all day. Even his regular customers would have left him if they had seen him assiduously going over the day’s receipts for a full hour every night after closing.

Meticulousness and niggardliness were the substance of Fukujiro’s religious zeal. If the sliding doors were left slightly open, or even if the door pulls supposed to be on the left and the right somehow turned up in the middle, he had to get up right away and fix them. Fukujiro’s uncle came from the country and ordered rice and eels for supper. Minoru was aghast to see Fukujiro exact the price of the meal from his uncle.

One could not compare young Yuichi’s body with that of Fukujiro, who was nearly forty. Not only that, Yuichi was to Minoru a vision of the hero out of so many action movies and the daring youth of adventure stories. Everything that Minoru wished to be he saw embodied in Yuichi. Shunsuke had used Yuichi as the material of a work he dreamed of; but Minoru used countless old tales as the material of a dream of Yuichi. [Shunsuke is the man who gave Yuichi, the guy Minoru meets at the park, his gay education by using medieval Japanese gay lit as an instruction manual]
>>
Yuichi would turn his head sharply—in the boy’s eyes he had turned his head in order to defend himself against the terrible onslaughts of young villains. Minoru fancied himself to be the boy companion sure to be accompanying such a hero. He was confident in the very depths of him in the courage of his master. He was a pure servant who felt that when he died it would be with his master. As a result, it was not love he manifested so much as sexual loyalty, the joy of imaginary renunciation and self-sacrifice. What he exhibited was a perfectly natural boyish propensity to dream. In his dreams one night, Minoru saw Yuichi and himself on the battlefield. Yuichi was the beautiful young officer; Minoru was his beautiful boy orderly. The two were simultaneously struck in the chest by rifle bullets and died embracing, their lips locked in a kiss. Another time Yuichi was a young seaman; Minoru was a boy sailor. The two landed on an=island in the torrid zone, and while they were there the ship, at the order of the crafty captain, set sail. There on the island the two castaways were attacked by savages. They warded off countless poison arrows fired from the bushes, using a great scallop shell for a shield.

Thus a night the two spent together was a fabulous night. Around them swirled the night of a gigantic, hostile world. Villains and bitter enemies and savages and assassins prayed for their misfortune. The eyes of adversaries who would shout for joy if they died were outside, peering through the dark window panes. Minoru was sad that he could not sleep with a pistol under his pillow. What would he do if some scoundrel had hidden himself in the wardrobe and was opening the door a crack and taking dead aim at the sleeping forms of the two with a revolver? He could not help feeling that Yuichi, sleeping undisturbed by these fancies, had courage beyond that of other men.

The unreasoning fear from which Minoru had longed to escape suddenly was transformed into a sweet, fabulous fear that made him feel only the joy of living under its influence. When he came upon articles in newspapers about opium smuggling and secret societies, he would read them avidly, thinking that each was an incident involving themselves.

Yuichi had been slightly infected by these proclivities in the boy. The stubborn bias against society that Yuichi once held—and still held—was in this dreamer something to encourage fantasies, romantic enmities, Romanesque perils, plebeian defenses against justice and nobility, the unyielding, reasonless prejudice of the rabble. When he saw this, Yuichi felt better. When he realized, moreover, the source of these inspirations—that it was he, Yuichi, nothing else —he was amazed at his own intangible power. “Those guys”—the only term by which the boy referred to society—“are after us, aren’t they? We’ve got to watch out,” Minoru liked to say. “Those guys would like to see us dead!”

“What do you mean? Those guys don’t give a damn. They hold their noses and pass us by, that’s all,” said his realistic protector, six years his senior. His opinion, however, did not convince Minoru.

“Cripes! Women, now”—Minoru spat toward a group of girl students going by. Then he threw out words of sexual vituperation that he had learned only recently, so that the girls could hear: “Women, now, what are they? All they have tucked away between their legs is a smelly, dirty pocket, ain’t that right? And all they’ve got stuffed in that pocket is rubbish.”

Yuichi, who of course was keeping his wife a secret, smiled at this remark.

The walks that he had formerly taken alone Minoru now took with Yuichi. Everywhere about the dark street corners imaginary assassins lurked. Without a sound, the assassins were treading close behind the two of them.
>>
>>2888404
Giving them the slip, or teasing them, or playing practical jokes on these nonexistent adversaries was Minoru’s favorite pastime.

“Look, Yuchan!” Minoru proposed a prank that would certainly result in their being followed. He took the wad of gum from his mouth and stuck it to the door handle of a foreigner’s shiny car at the curb. This accomplished, he acted as if he didn’t know a thing about it and hurried Yuichi away.

One evening Yuichi went with Minoru to the roof of the Ginza Hot Springs for beer. Having downed one, the boy proffered his glass for a second. The evening breeze on the roof was quite cool; their shirts, which had stuck to their backs with sweat, started billowing in the breeze like hoods. Red, yellow, and water-green lanterns swung above the dark dance floor as two or three couples took turns to the guitar music. Yuichi and Minoru, although they wished to dance, did not join them. It was difficult for men friends to dance together here. They looked on fixedly at the fun the others were having and, caught up in the activity, left their seats to lean against the railing. The gleam of the street enveloped the summer evening. In the south there was a dark shadow among the populated areas. They decided it must be the forest of the Hama Detached Palace Park. As they looked idly in the direction of that forest, Yuichi put his arm about Minoru’s shoulders. From the midst of the forest a glow began to rise. Fireworks spread out from a great green ball, then with a noise like thunder turned yellow, then collapsed into pink parasol shapes, then shattered and went out, and all was silent.

“Pretty, isn’t it, like that?” said Minoru. He paraphrased a passage he had read in a detective story: “If you took everybody in the world and sent them up in fireworks and killed them—all the guys that cause trouble, one at a time, and made fireworks of them and killed them—there’d be only Yuichi and me left in the whole world!”

“Then who would have the children?”

“Who needs children? If we got married and had kids, the kids would grow up and make fools of us, or if not that, they’d become just like us, that’s all.”

These words sent a shiver through Yuichi. He felt that divine intervention had made Yasuko’s child a female. The youth grasped Minoru’s shoulder gently. In this rebellious spirit that lay within Minoru’s soft boyish cheek and his pure smile, Yuichi somehow usually found balm for his basically uneasy nature. As a result, their sympathies strengthened the sensual tie between them and in turn cultivated the most essential elements, as well as the most decent elements, of their friendship. The boy’s imaginativeness pulled at the youth’s doubts and pertinaciously set them in motion. Thus, even Yuichi was plunged into infantile dreams. One night, for instance, he kept himself awake earnestly imagining that he had set out on an exploring expedition into the upper reaches of the Amazon.

When it was quite late they went to the boathouse on the shore across from the Tokyo Theater, intending to take a boat ride. The boats were all moored at the dock, the light in the boathouse shack was extinguished, its Nanking lock tightly fastened. There was nothing to do but sit down on the boards of the dock and let their legs dangle over the water, and smoke. The Tokyo Theater across the way was closed. The Shimbashi Playhouse, on the other side of the bridge at the right, was closed too. The water reflected hardly any light. No more remnants of the heat, it seemed, would rise from that dark, still surface.

Minoru thrust out his forehead: “Look, I have prickly heat!” He showed Yuichi the faint red signs. This boy showed everything to his lover: his notebooks, his shirts, his books, his socks—whatever new thing he was wearing.
>>
>>2888406
Suddenly Minoru burst out laughing. Yuichi looked at the dark path along the river near the Tokyo Theater to see what was making him laugh. An old man in a bath garment had fallen off his bicycle and lay on the path beside it. He had landed on his hip, perhaps, and could not get up.

“A fine thing, riding a bike at his age. I wish he’d fallen in the river.”

His happy laughter and his cruel teeth, white and luminous in the darkness, were beautiful. Yuichi could not help thinking of the ways beyond imagination that Minoru was like himself.

“You must be living with a steady boy friend. How do you manage to stay out so late and get away with it?”

“I suppose his weak point is that he’s in love with me. And he’s become my foster father to boot. It’s legal.”

There was something laughable in the word “legal” coming from this boy’s mouth. Minoru went on: “You have a steady boy friend, too, I guess.”

“Yes, but only an old man.”

“I’ll go kill that old man.”

“No use. He’s one you can kill and he won’t die.”

“Why, now, do young, pretty, gay fellows all have to be somebody’s prisoner?”

“It’s more convenient so.”

“They buy you clothes and give you all kinds of money. And you get attached to them, even though you hate them.” As he said this the boy spat a great white wad of saliva into the river.

Yuichi put his arm around Minoru’s waist. Then he brought his lips close to the boy’s cheek and kissed him. “That’s awful,” said Minoru, kissing him back unrestrainedly. “You kiss me and I get an erection. Then I don’t want to go home.”

After a time Minoru said: “Ah, a cicada!” Through the stillness that followed after a trolley car had thundered over the bridge, the mincing, tangled voice of the night cicada threaded its way.

Thus the night sky came irresistibly into their eyes. It was a splendid starry sky, returning its brilliance to the street glare unflinchingly. Yet Yuichi’s nostrils were full of the stench of the river, close to whose surface their shoes dangled. He really liked this boy, but he could not help thinking that people talk of love as if they were ditch rats.

[scene break]

Fukujiro Honda had begun to entertain definite suspicions about Minoru. The heat was terrible. One night when sleep was difficult, he was reading a samurai adventure magazine under the mosquito netting, unhappily waiting for the tardy Minoru to come home. His head was filled with mad thoughts. At one o’clock in the morning, he heard the back door opening, then the sound of shoes being removed. Fukujiro turned off the light by his pillow.

The light went on in the adjoining room. Minoru seemed to be undressing. Then an interminable period of time passed by while Minoru, it seemed, sat naked at the window, smoking. Thin smoke, glinting with lamplight, was visible rising above the room partitions.

Minoru had slipped naked into the mosquito netting in his room and was about to get into bed. His body was suddenly pinned by Fukujiro’s body. He had a rope coiled in his hand, with which he bound Minoru’s hands. Then he passed the rest of the long rope several times around Minoru’s chest. All the while Minoru struggled silently, his cries muffled by a pillow pressed against his face and held there by Fukujiro’s forehead as he worked to tie the boy.

The tying was finally done, and Minoru pleaded half audibly from under the pillow: “Ouch! You’re killing me. I won’t yell; just take away the pillow.”

So that the boy could not flee, Fukujiro straddled his body. He took away the pillow, but kept his right hand near Minoru’s face in case he cried out.
>>
>>2888409
With his left hand he grasped the boy’s hair and, giving it small tugs, said: “All right, let’s have it! Who’s the dark horse you’re stepping out with? Come on, out with it!”

Minoru was suffering. His hair was being pulled; his bare chest and arms were chafed by the rope. Yet even with Fukujiro’s old-fashioned accusation ringing in his ears, this fanciful youth never once imagined that the ever dependable Yuichi would arrive here to rescue him. He thought of practical ruses that he had been taught by worldly experience.

“Stop pulling my hair and I’ll tell you,” Minoru groaned. When Fukujiro let go his grip, the boy slumped as if dead. Fukujiro was seized with panic and shook the boy’s shoulders. “This rope is killing me,” Minoru gasped. “Untie the rope and I’ll tell you.” Fukujiro turned on the light at the head of the bed. He untied the rope. Minoru applied his lips to the sore places on his wrists. He kept his head down and said nothing.

The momentum of Fukujiro’s faint-hearted outburst was by this time half-spent. He saw Minoru’s firmness, and thinking now to bring him around by tears, he bowed his head to the floor before the naked boy who sat crosslegged and begged forgiveness for his violent behavior. On the boy’s white chest the pink rope marks were still visible. Naturally, this theatrical display of pain, too, had an indeterminate ending.

Fukujiro feared having his own conduct discovered, so he decided against calling in a private detective agency. Beginning the next evening, however, he neglected the shop and again went on the trail of the one he loved. He found no trace of Minoru. He gave some money to a trusted waiter and set him to the task. This clever, faithful fellow reported triumphantly that he had seen the face of Minoru’s companion and had been able to ascertain that he was named Yuchan.

[Yuichi gets a blackmail letter in the mail that his wife and mother see, scandalizing them. He realizes he's in deep shit, and he needs to take care of the situation immediately. Luckily, Minoru picks just the right moment to drop by Yuichi's house]

When the stranger turned toward him, Yuichi was shocked to recognize the face of Minoru. They ran to each other and shook hands.

“A letter came, didn’t it? An awful letter. I found out that my old man sent it. I was so sorry about it I cleared out of the house. The old man put a detective on our trail. He found out all about us.”

Yuichi was not surprised. “I thought as much,” he said.

“There’s something I want to talk over with you, Yuchan.”

Affecting the calmness of an older person, Yuichi took the boy’s arm and guided him. Talking rapidly of the difficulties into which they had just been plunged, they hastened their steps.

“What did you want to talk about?” asked Yuichi.

“When this business happened, I decided I couldn’t stay in my old man’s house any more. I’m going to leave home. Yuchan, will you come with me?”

“With you?” Yuichi hesitated.

“Are you concerned about money? Don’t worry about that. Look how much I have.”

His face serious, his mouth slightly open, the boy unbuttoned the back pocket of his trousers. He withdrew a carefully folded roll of bills.

“Keep it for me,” he said, handing it to Yuichi. “Heavy, isn’t it? It’s a hundred thousand yen.”

“Where’d you get this money?”

“I broke open the old man’s safe and cleaned it of cash.”

Yuichi looked at the pitiful sum, the niggardly result of one month of dreaming with this boy of adventure. They had turned away from society and dreamed of a youth of daring deeds, exploration, heroic evil, of the brotherly love of comrades-in-arms who face death on the morrow, of sentimental exploits they knew would end in disaster, and of all manner of youthful tragedy.
>>
>>2888412
The outcome of these reveries, however, was now before Yuichi’s eyes. It was nothing more than an urban incident; it had no hint of glory, nor of the smell of death. This drab incident, appropriate to a ditch rat, might perhaps come out in the newspapers—an item about the size of a sugar cube.

This boy’s dreams have the tranquillity of a woman’s, was Yuichi’s disheartening thought. We’re supposed to elope with stolen money and live somewhere, just the two of us. Ah! If only he had had the courage to kill his old man, then I would fall down on my knees before the boy!

Yuichi called forth his other self, the young head of a family. He quickly decided the attitude he should assume. Compared with the other, pitiful outcome, the alternative of hypocrisy seemed far preferable.

“Suppose I hold on to this,” said Yuichi, putting the roll of bills in his inside pocket.

Innocent trust shone in the boy’s eyes, so like a rabbit’s, and he answered, “All right.”

“I’ve got a little business at the post office. Would you like to come along?”

“Wherever you go . . . I’ve entrusted my body to you too.”

“You sure have,” Yuichi said, as if to reassure himself.

At the post office he sent a telegram to Mrs. Kaburagi that read as if it had been sent by a fretful child: “Need you. Come right away.” Then he called a cab and told Minoru to get in.

“Where are we going?” asked Minoru.

Yuichi told the driver the destination in a low voice. Minoru, who hadn’t heard, assumed they were going to some fine hotel. Then, seeing the cab approaching Kanda, the boy thrashed about like a sheep brought back to the fold.

“Leave things to me,” said Yuichi; “I won’t do anything wrong.”

The boy quickly seized upon something in Yuichi’s resolute tone and smiled. This hero was now going to show his strength and revenge himself, the boy thought.

>We're almost at the end anons, just a little bit more!
When the boy imagined the face of his foster father, ugly in death, his body trembled with joy. Minoru dreamed that Yuichi dreamed about him just as he dreamed about Yuichi. Yuichi had a knife. He would impassively cut the old man’s jugular vein. As Minoru thought about the beauty of the killer in that moment, Yuichi’s profile became in the boy’s eyes something that possessed all the perfection of a god.

The cab stopped in front of the coffee shop. Yuichi got out. Minoru followed. On this school street at noon in midsummer there were few passers-by. As the two crossed the street, the sun at the zenith barely made a shadow. Minoru triumphantly lifted his eyes toward the surrounding second- and third-floor windows and scanned them. The people who were looking unconcernedly down on the street were certainly not dreaming that these youths were on their way to kill a man. Great deeds always are carried out at just such obvious times as this.

The shop was quiet inside. To eyes accustomed to the light outside, it was terribly dark. When he saw the two entering, Fukujiro, who had been sitting by the cash register, suddenly stood up.

“Where did you go off to?” he demanded of Minoru, as if about to grab him.

Minoru calmly introduced Yuichi to Fukujiro. Fukujiro’s face went white.

“I’d like to speak to you for a moment.”

“Won’t you come in the back? This way, please.” Fukujiro left the register in the care of a waiter.

“Stay here,” said Yuichi to Minoru, stationing him in the doorway.

When Yuichi took the roll from his inside pocket and handed it over to him, Fukujiro was dumfounded.
“Minoru tells me he took this from your household safe. He gave it to me, and I am giving it back to you untouched. Minoru was not himself, I believe, so please don’t be harsh with him.”
>>
>>2888415
Silently and suspiciously, Fukujiro stared at the young man’s face. This man before him, whom he had attacked and injured by such a low trick, he had loved at first sight. He quickly thought of a stupid plan. He would confess all and submit to the other’s rebuke. It would be a short cut to winning his sympathy.

First he would apologize. He could take his cue readymade from heroic tales and the songs of minstrels. “Well, sir, you win!” he would say. “When I stand before you in your grandeur, my smallest concern disgusts me. Go ahead, punch me, kick me, do what you want with me until you’re satisfied, and so on.”

Before he went into his act, Fukujiro had a matter to settle. Now that he had his money back, he must count it. The amount of money that was in the safe he always kept in his head, but it still had to check with the balance in his books. And 100,000 yen was not something one could count in a second. He pulled up a chair to the table, bowed lightly to Yuichi, spread out the money, and began carefully counting the bills.

Yuichi observed the dexterity with which the small businessman counted his money. In the movements of his fidgety fingers there was a dead-earnestness that was aloof from love, anonymous letters, and theft. When he had finished counting, Fukujiro put his hands on the table and nodded to Yuichi again.

“You’re sure it’s all there?”

“Yes, it’s all there.”

Fukujiro had missed his chance. Yuichi was already on his feet. Without another look at Fukujiro, he strode to the door. Minoru had seen all of this unforgivable betrayal by his hero. He stood with his back to the wall, his face pale, and watched Yuichi go. As he went out, Yuichi bowed; Minoru looked away.
>>
>>2888416
Yuichi walked rapidly down the midsummer street. There was no one behind him. A smile tugged at the comers of his mouth. He was filled with an indescribably joyous pride. Now he understood the pride of those who do charitable deeds. When it comes to bemusing the heart, no evil is better than hypocrisy. He knew that, and he was very happy. Thanks to the scene just enacted, the young man’s shoulders were now unburdened. This morning’s heavy oppression seemed to have lifted. To make the joy complete, he decided on a foolish, meaningless purchase. He went to a little stationery store and bought the cheapest possible celluloid pencil sharpener and a pen point.

And that's the end of the story, anons! Thanks for bearing the last twenty posts. What did you think? This was written in 1951, and you can see some of its influence in BL, which came much later! Minoru never appears in the novel again iirc, but the novel eventually gives Yuichi (the real main character) his moral comeuppance.

For any mdzs fans in the thread, thoughts on lan xichen? I’m surprised by how polarizing a character he is with comments ranging from the usual “Did nothing wrong” to people thinking he personally + indirectly killed Nie Mingjue (and Wei Wuxian if live action fans muddy the conversation by thinking any mdzs discussion is about the untamed). Personally I feel bad for him. He’s the only friend for two guys who’s first reaction to any inconvenience is violence, and refuse to talk about their issues so he’s stuck being their relationship counselor. I guess a rocky friendship where no side it wholly wrong is too complicated for some people to understand.

Slow Damage was so good, goddamn. Can't help but feel N+C shot themselves in the foot with this one tho. Shit's so self-contained I have no idea what a drama cd or FD could possibly add.
>>
>>2888464
Yeah, I also feel sorry for him, I honestly think he did nothing wrong. He had too much goodwill and trust to look deeper or investigate beyond trying to mediate, but that's just what his personality was. Even if I can understand the point that it got NMJ fucked by extention, he was used, not resposible for being too kindhearted.

The situation with 3zun feels less like “Everything is jin guangyao’s fault” since it’s explicitly stated in the book that nie mingjue still cared for jin guangyao and become his sworn brother so he could guide him, the problem is that nmj is a total hardass that doesn’t understand that not everyone is as open minded + strict as him so jin guangyao’s desperation to be respected is legitimate since even after singlehandedly ending a war people still look down him because his mom was a whore. so i can understand why the 3zuns couldn’t just cut each other off since they all still care for each other.

I really like it so far because the bottom isn't just some defenseless useless pirce of meat. He's probably the most knowledgeable in the first five chapters because magic really made people in this world kinda ignorant about traditional mechanics. This is another thing I like, the worldbuilding is fucking great, I like how the author takes his time explaining how things work, and through that you can see where the story is going.

The art is very good, the anatomy is hot the dicks are well drawn and you can see different facial expressions clearly.

What I do want to see more as the time goes by is the protag bringing in some more of his experience from his previous life, beyond his medical skills that is. I know the novel is already all completed so I am tempted to read it.

>>2888822
I'll share later when I have more time, but I don't think we'll get riba out of it. Some of her melodrama is more enjoyable than other, but I highly doubt it'll be that much different from her other series. Also looking at this chapter she's changing her artstyle to something more generic which is a pity.

Anon that first read Sakuragari for hard mode of the topic and rec'd it for the pastebin. I decided to talk about my favorite old school BL before this thread died. It's a korean manhwa from 2004, waaaay before webtoons took over the scene. The art is very polished and you can see the effort the artist put into making the fashion historically accurate; the main writer is an actual novelist so the plot is A++ as well. It starts out as your typical old school Arabian Nights inspired BL. The protagonist, Sehara (named after Scheherazade from One Thousand and One Nights), disguises himself as a woman to replace his younger sister after she's chosen to marry the shah, Shahryar (named after the shah in the OG story). I expected the story to be like every other sex filled Arabian-flavored BL, what I got was an 11 volume epic.

The plot is split into two halves: the main story focusing on Shahryar + Sehara and co. and the tales Sehara tells, these usually have some connection to a problem in the main plot and may have a moral message to convey to whoever is listening to Sehara. The side stories are amazing; I know that the cliff hanger endings are supposed to emulate the original One Thousand and One Nights that leave you unsatisfied and desperate to learn more about the characters, but there were times where I went 'Fuck the main plot, I wanna know what happens!' Then there's the meat of the story — Sehara and Shahryar's relationship. The series is light on sex; Shahryay fingers Sehara in the first volume, but after that they maintain a chaste romance. The other sex scenes in the side stories fade to black. This reply is already huge so I'll try my best to keep it short. Both Sehara and Shahryar develop as individuals, especially Shahryar as he goes from a arrogant bloodthirsty ruler to an empathetic and wise man. Seeing him heal from his trust issues, battle against the political enemies, and fall in love with Sehara were great to see. (1/2)
>>
>>2888859
(2/2 damn I typed too much) Sehara is also a great character in his own right. Halfway through the series he gets seperated from Shahryar and travels with European crusaders and even makes his way to China on the Silk Road. He doesn't have as much radical character development as Shahryar but he's a fun protagonist. A Night of a Thousand Dreams remains my favorite BL manga, even my fave manga of all time. Despite all my gushing I hesitate to recommend it for the pastebin since most of the side stories focus on m/f romances so it might be a turn-off for people that want a exclusive BL romance since Night of a Thousand Dreams is more of shoujo that happens to have a BL main couple. Still, tons of danmei webnovels have divergent side arcs that focus on friendship and m/f romance + Kaze to Ki no uta, the blueprint for BL, has an entire arc dedicated to Serge's parents, so if anyone is interested in reading Night of a Thousand Dreams I highly highly HIGHLY recommend reading this amazing series.
>>
>>2888860
>I hesitate to recommend it for the pastebin since most of the side stories focus on m/f romances
It's fine anon, Kaze to Kii (the most influential BL of all time) had 3 volumes dedicated to the romance between Serge's parents.

It's hard to tell from the pictures but it's two girls - first one is a random schoolgirl that the blond guy saves from a teacher trying to punish her for piercing her ears. Then the black haired guy comes in, and he's the blond's childhood friend he recently reuinted with after a couple years apart. Then it's flashback and the little-girl character is the black hair guy when he was a kid. Back then the blond was protective of him and apparently they messed around from time to time, because when the flashback ends and he stumbles across his friend masturbating, he immediately joins in 'just like in the old times'. And that's the chapter.

MDZS anon again, now I wanna talk about worst boy #2, Jin Guangyao. I’ll start off by saying that I adore him, he’s a good final antagonist and tragic figure. Seeing him go from a good kid trying to earn his father’s and society’s respect to a bitter misanthrope was fantastic. I can feel sympathy for him, but at the end of day I can say that he got what he deserved for all the shit he’s done. MXTX is really good at writing guys that ruin their own lives so I can’t wait to see what her 4th book brings. Also looking forward to the Japanese audio drama since Akira Ishida was selected to be his VA due to fan demand.

I've been here since thread 1 with the Harada drawing and I can't see myself staying past thread 100. I'll probably just go back to reading BL alone after that. Not that it matters if one more anon fucks off, I'm sure a lot of the OGs have already

I've been watching and posting in homo threads since they were imagedumps, there was definitely a time they were good. Less hostile, people would get excited for stuff like Free and they were the kind of places that would argue No.6 was gay, no the other way around. These days they'd argue the opposite.
