ENDING!? How many chapters is it? Seems kinda short to tie up that whole plot, didn't only restart recently?
>>
>>2929701
It's at ch 21 in the magazine, and the current two volumes cover 11.5. That'd mean the full story will total at 4 volumes.

>What trends or tropes do you predict will be big this year?
I'm assuming more domsubverse, the plots are extremely cringe but the sex scenes suit my fetishes
>>
>>2929981
Agreed. Few artists can actually write well. This is why Dousei Yankee worked, Shoowa can at least sort of write a plot with a beginning, middle and end. Inutoki and Shohei also thrived on the writer-artist dynamic.
Who are some artists you think would work better with writers, or vice versa? I think Mushiba is a pretty fun writer who might benefit from teaming up with a different artist. It would certainly give her stories a different spin.
On the flip side, I really wish Ranmaru Zariya would either stop working one-handed or team up with a writer. She has so many cool ideas and a sexy style but the writing is just bad.
>>
>>2930017
Shinou Ryo, Nishimoto Rou, Nekota Riko and recently Yuitsu really could use a writer or at least co-writer. Kinoshita Keiko isn't a genius writer in the first place, but would definitely benefit from an artist.
>>
>>2929615
>>What trends or tropes do you predict will be big this year?
>vampire
Not sure why but I feel like we have a vampire renaissance coming.
>science fiction
I hope the popularity of Dune among jp fujos leads to some interesting Sci Fi soon.
>new hype title in thread
The thread hasn't had a big hype title for a while. Dear Gene is the closest we have right now. Maybe this year we'll find our next big one.
>non-rape gay sex scene in a prominent seinen manga
I think a prominent plot-based seinen will have a non-rape homo sex scene within the next two years. Fade to black counts. Bonus points if it's in Jump Plus. Extra bonus if it involves a main character. 10Dance doesn't count for this prediction.
>domsubverse
Does nothing for me, but I agree with >>2930016
>scanlations
Someone's finally going to leak Harudaki's shit. (Wishful thinking)
Mangago will have several almost-shutdowns but will survive. Unfortunately.
Mangadex will continue struggling for momentum. They'll reopen comments in the middle of the year, no one will notice. They'll survive though.
Someone's gonna get sued by a bunch of Koreans. It'll cause drama and "IS THIS THE END OF MANGA PIRACY??" headlines, but won't make much actual difference.
As China cracks down, creative focus will shift. Perhaps Taiwan, the Phillippines or even India? Or jp novels will gut gud again. (Wishful thinking)
A bunch of really old BL will be scanlated by a tragically short-lived group.
>licensing
Several smaller licensers will close up shop.
Kuma won't promote Canis v2 enough and it tragically won't sell.
The SuBLime boss will finally hire PR after getting cancelled. (Wishful thinking)
Renta will introduce a Fakku-style subscription that doesn't cover every title and is still too expensive. Everyone will hate but idiots will buy it anyway.
Haiki will get licensed.
>thread
There will be a change. Maybe op will vanish or someone will finally update the pin board. But otherwise business as usual.

>choose one: retarded comments or muh piracy bad moment
Believe it or not, it's neither. I don't interact with the comments everyone whines about because I don't go there. Supporting mangadex while being against piracy is a cope, I wouldn't support mangadex either if I genuinely had an issue with piracy. My issue with mangago is how and why it's run. Terrible site architecture, no security to speak of, and it's a goldmine for the owners. I'm not going to earn those parasites a cent. There's enough for me to read elsewhere.

This is getting really off topic, but Princess Knight is a gender-bender shoujo from the 1950's. The titular character is born with the powers of a prince as well as a princess, but she's not trans. She's just a very early magical girl.
You should probably finish that Hagio Moto manga, the second half is where it gets good. (If you're in it for the Sci Fi and Fantasy, that is. If you read it expecting BL, never pick it up again.)
Speaking of Sci Fi that definitely isn't BL. At this point, you should probably just watch Dune. Go sate your curiosity anon, it's pretty decent.

A group of translators and their translator friends that humiliates anyone who tries to translate the same meatbun novel as them. They literally do a quality check of their rival translations, and publish the results on their blogs witn 2k+ readers while mocking it with their friends for a few weeks. They've had a meltdown by calling readers leaches and saying poor people shouldn't access the novels they've been illegally translating all this time before. >>
>>2930962
Y'know, I'm pretty surprised a publisher hasn't picked her stuff up yet. Even though I didn't care for Tasogare, her art is pretty in a marketable way. Also, Ichikawa is memorable enough that in it that readers would probably pick up Zanzou just for him. I sure would have.
Great shame about Yoiyoi though, yeah. I liked the disheveled guy but I'm still mad she forced that femboy in when the bowl cut twins were right there.
I only read the first two chapters though, did it get better towards the end? Only asking because I didn't care for Ichikawa's dude either at first, but she really turned that around by the end.
>>2929981
Hey, speaking of artists who should team up with writers. Then again, a better editor would probably be just as helpful for Janome.
>>
>>2930977
Honey Milk belongs to Kodansha and Kodansha USA isn't much into BL, I'd guess that's the main reason. The disheveled guy was great but you made a good call to stop reading. In a painfully overemotional shoujo-esque way he gets turned into a spineless simp by the end of the story. I generally like Janome's writing style and her character psychology is decent, but nothing could save a premise where the couple is not so much contrasting as incompatible.
>>
>>2930980
>Kodansha USA isn't much into BL
>the couple is not so much contrasting as incompatible
Doubly sad times.
Oh well. Maybe her next one will be about the goth roommate with the mask. He seemed fun, and he's visually distinctive. I'd try to guess who in the movie club he'd be paired with, but with Janome's track record, she'd probably invent someone new.

>The thread hasn't had a big hype title for a while.
I would like to nominate The Summer Hikaru Died as this thread's next big title.

The plot is intriguing and more complex than most BL, and the art is especially good at evoking both the blistering heat of summer, and the unnerving sense of impending horror about the befall the town. It's also not shying away from the homo despite running in a non-BL magazine.

This series also has the benefit of updating regularly. The Japanese raws are freely available and publish 10 pages every week. The English scanlations release one chapter (30 pages) every two weeks and will likely catch up within the month.

Something I wonder is why Chinese artists don't just license their works to be created by Taiwanese animation companies and producers. It would allow their adapations to be more faithful. Fuck China.
>>
>>2931137
The shitty contracts will get in the way. The moment they sign their contracts with jjwxc - one of the few way to be able to write online, it's not their property anymore. And if tencent and the likes try to bypass the censorship and sell the works to other countries it's a death sentence for careers of everyone involved.
>>
>>2931137
They can't. If they post their orignal work on jjwcx or any other popular website, the user agreement makes them basically forfeit most rights to their work. From then, when someone wants to adapt or further publish their stuff, they have to get rights from the website (which coincidentally is owned by Government-friendly mega-corporation Tencent). The author would break the law if they tried to go behind the company's back. Not to mention that selling uncensored goods from other countries is also illegal in China.
>>
>>2931143
In b4 self-publishing - also illegal, in fact that's what would've but MXTX behind bars though hell knows what's going on with her.
>>
>>2931144

They're taking out the first story, because it has a creature save a kid, and the kid decides to be with the creature romantically as an adult. They probably feared the 'grooming' retards but ended up censoring a perfectly normal story that no sane person would ever find problematic.
>>
>>2931183

It's really depressing to see how China is so behind the times on these kinds of things. I bet it will be another 100 years or more before restrictions on BL media get loosened, even a little bit. It's uncanny how China is willing to source BL stories for adaptations but then make the story completely unrecognizable by filtering out things that go against "Chinese values". What kind of fucked up place is it there, that everything is owned by the government and anything that isn't in line with their values (whose values?) gets blipped out of existence. When will these people die out? Is China even capable of change? Evil hateful people with double standards. You can't be a modern society with this POV.
>>
>>2931209
It's not going to change anytime soon, if anything I'm worried it's going to get much worse. The most prominent lgbt rights groups were forced to close down, lgbt representation has been banned for years but now it's gotten so bad even feminine men and censored gay content are now a taboo. I believe this caused a spike in bullying and there have been reported suicides of such "feminine" men already.
Even top BL writers are now writing novels with no pairings, het or yuri which still gets a pass. This is becoming worth Korea tier with control of personal styles and preferences already
>>
>>2931209
No shit anon, censorship of BL is far from the worst shit China does. I pity them, but I'm almost glad that at least in BL China won't be competing with Japan and the rest of Asia. I'm already disgusted how bilibili shills their shit everywhere, even though tons of their media is nationalist propaganda colored as enterntainment. Even MDZS which doesn't exactly go in line with Chinese policing has evil, conceited Wen clan symbolized by a rising sun flag to mirror Chinese ongoing resentment for Japan. Though well, there's a whole theory that many novelists that go against policies in terms of 'raunchy' content etc try to compensate in the eyes of censors by adding more over the top patriotic and nationalist themes. I pity the authors and I pity irl gay people there even more, but the less influence over global entertainment China has the better.
>>
>>2931215
Well, they have just finished off their tv and idol industries and hurt gaming despite all 3 becoming huge overseas, so you shouldn't worry about it anymore. Their cultural export is a toast and Chinese themselves would rather enjoy foreign content now

This manga is like an abusive relationship. I read it every time there is a new chapter, and every time, I feel stupid, disappointed and bitter by the end. I swear I'll never read it again, then the next chapter comes out and I read it anyway. I guess I'm hoping it'll recapture the magic of the first few chapters, but the truth is that that will never happen. Instead, the cycle will continue. Only when the comic ends will I be free.

I wish Kuranishi would do another BL series. I loved Tsuki to Kin no Shangri-la, it was beautiful and moving. I enjoyed the almost early-shoujo vibe and I loved watching the characters grow and learn. Yeah, it wasn't really a romance and didn't have a traditionally happy ending, but the ride was an emotional journey. It was more like reading a historical novel. There isn't much BL like that out there, but I want more. Maybe a happy ending next time too?

I swear the mangaka had more fun doing the occasional Mikami to Sato shorts she sprinkled into Akari to Kare about Mikami getting really tall and Sato being conflicted about this. Back in October, Keiko Takemiya posted on her blog that Norie Masuyama, a longtime friend of her's, had passed away in her sleep during summer. I posted summaries of Takemiya's and Hagio's autobiographies back in May, I don't know if anyone that was there is still on the thread so I'll give a short rundown of how important Masuyama is. Masuyama was the one that introduced Takemiya and Moto Hagio to literature and film like Hermann Hesse and Les amitiés particulières, which inspired them to create Heart of Thomas and Kaze to Ki no Uta. As Takemiya said in her blog post without Masuyama she would not have become the artist that she is now. Masuyama was the first person she shared the story idea that would eventually become kaze ki; they spent 8 hours brainstorming the plot and that same morning Masuyama came to Takemiya's apartment to see her sketches. Honestly, without Masuyama BL wouldn't exist; it's a shame that she's virtually unknown in Japan and the West.

I assume you've already read Dear My God by Asada Nemui.
>MADK
It's nothing like Killing Stalking but it may appeal to you anyway. It's psychological and the MC does get kidnapped and mutilated by the object of his affections. It's also supernatural, though. Not sure if that's your thing.
>Nishida
If you're just into torture and gore, not interestingly explored psychological elements, then you probably want Nishida. Not my thing but may be yours.
>Harada in general
You might be the person Color Recipe was written for.
>Ogeretsu Tanaka
Normally I'd recommend Ogeretsu Tanaka's Hadakeru Kaibutsu, but in your case, maybe the prequels like Azami would be better. They're not thaaat dark though.
>Sadahiro Mika
Hai To Diamond is her best story and Manchester no Natsu has her best art, but Neji no Kaiten may be more up your alley. Incest, kidnapping, rape. That stuff.
>Shimako Wan
She has a lot of bullies and piss which aren't exactly Killing Stalking. Her mean, shitty, entitled tops can be fun though.
>Zankoku na Kami ga Shihai Suru
A classic but if you're only in this for the whump, I'm guessing it won't do much for you after the first half.
>Sneaky Red
Read the first volume of Thanat's Sneaky Red and don't read the rest.
>Kunieda Saika
Bannin is a oneshot but it's absolutely wtf. Spin Out might be good for you too, but I don't remember if it ends in a mushy way.
>Kashio
I remember Kokoro wo Korosu Houhou/How to Kill a Heart being dark as fuck. The most dysfunctional step brothers I've ever read.
>Zakk
I'd say Canis: The Speaker but it's not fully translated yet. Might be worth your while anyway though.
>A Lotus Flower in the Mud
Not gonna lie, I thought this one was dumb as shit. But it is dark and nasty.

I made a text summary of Sleeping Dead 8. It’s probably not that accurate but I wanted one for myself. I’ll likely screenshot and share the chapter along with MadK tomorrow.

I genuinely expected this chapter to be a breather, like a comedic break after the last two. We’ve actually been climbing to the top of a roller coaster’s highest incline and it’s about to speed down.

>>
I missed these two idiots so I'm not gonna complain about new content, but what is it with BL sequels and having no plot?
>>
>>2932045
Unless the writer is really good, romance centered works that have to conclude in 5 chapters are over the moment the two normal characters get together. So you're stuck with random dudes who want to fuck one of the leads popping up to create a conflict, some kind of work trouble or the characters dealing with coming out.
With good writers it's character development, work issues and working on making the relationship more balanced. I feel like romance centered works work better as novels
>>
>>2932045
I actually like no plot, no conflict sequels. My dream sequel has the couple being affectionate and caring to each other for the whole volume's length, like a very long extra.

Should I read A Little Life? I love Zankoku
>>
>>2932367
As a fellow Zankoku na fan, I'm honestly not sure. One thing that always gets me about that one is that it doesn't feel like Hagio Moto enjoyed writing it. It feels like it flowed out of her like blood from a wound. A Little Life, on the other hand, has parts like that, but overall it reads like the writer's very well-written whump and longing fantasy. I guess I should have compared it to Kaze to Ki no Uta more than Zankoku na? Maybe even Harada in Nii-chan or that one oneshot about the brain damaged dude.
You could probably download a kindle preview and see if you like her style? Let me know what you think if you do.
>>
>>2932371
Samefagging just to say though, even though it is clearly some sort of fantasy to her, I don't think that cheapens the novel. It's highly regarded for a reason, the writing can be beautiful. Her descriptions are vivid and creative, the settings are luxurious and aspirational in juxtaposition to her characters who are broken and trapped in their own cyclical psychodramas. She often takes refuge in audacity, but I'd say she pulls it off. By the end, you might find yourself wishing her characters would succeed at dying because you know that she'd write it beautifully if they did.
Her books are definitely not going to be to everyone's taste, and to be honest, I'm not sure A Little Life was to mine. I'm happy for her as a person more than as a fan of her writing. But yeah, check out an excerpt and then make up your mind.

I don't think the book will have that much staying power anon. You are correct that the initial response was acclaim bordering on panegeric, but I think with time more and more serious literary analysts and students are going to agree with Mendelsohn's takedown. When LittleLife first came out in 2015 everyone was calling it the next GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL, by 2019 it barely scraped into the Gaurdian's Top 100 of the decade and it's only gotten worse. I can get into why, but don't want to spam the thread with wall of text...at least not till we've hit bump limit.

So instead I'll recommend anon try These Violent Delights. It's better, considerably shorter and the audiobook version is great.

Gay splatterpunk is really unique since I can't imagine anything like it being published now without causing people to whine about the dark content. The George Miles cycle is good too; iirc the author was interviewed back in 2021 and was frustrated with the current state of the literature scene since people flip out about rape, necrophilia, etc.

>Please do elaborate once we hit bump limit, I'd love to hear more.

1/
You asked for it anon, took a.while to type out. Also keep in mind that from here on out, I’ll be discussing the book with the assumption you’ve read it and are relatively familiar with all the characters.

I would like to begin this rant by citing an interview the author, Yanagihara, conducted with Kirkus Reviews:

>”I think they [male friends] have a very hard time still naming what it is to be scared or vulnerable or afraid, and it’s not just that they can’t talk about it— it’s that they can’t sometimes even identify what they’re feeling. . . . When I hear sometimes my male friends talking about these manifestations of what, to me, is clearly fear, or clearly shame, they really can’t even express the word itself.”

Note that Yanagihara’s list of emotions includes no positive ones: a point I'll come back to.

So to start, it is impossible to credit A Little Life as the next great American Novel, or even an epic, or even a gay epic. The book provides so little historical, cultural, or political detail that it’s often difficult to say precisely in what era the characters’ intense emotional dramas take place, indeed they seem to be situated in a place out of time.

Of the novel’s four principled characters, by far the most fully realized, and the novel’s most persuasive narrative trajectory, is the actor ,Willem, who rises to Hollywood stardom, punctuated by flashbacks to his childhood and a touchingly described relationship with his crippled brother, which suggests why he’s mastered the empathy and self-effacement that his career (and later Jude) demands. It is arguably A Little Life's finest achievement.
>>
2/
Sadly, as the novel progresses Yanagira seems to lose interest in characterizing anyone but the perennially victimized golden child, Jude, who is impossibly gifted given his upbringing, being not only a genius litigator, mathematician and talented amateur vocalist but also, wouldn’t you know, a damn great pâtissier. Malcolm the biracial architect is nothing more than a plot cypher, and when JB’s struggle with drug addiction is effectively chronicled, his character, too, fades away, only making sporadic appearances with younger boyfriends in tow.

But all these characters, their desires and rise to prominence get overshadowed by repetitive hints about Jude’s dark past, as the novel gets hopelessly side-tracked by its secondary and true narrative: a twenty-first-century tale of abuse, victimization and self-loathing. These glimpses accumulate ominously, exemplified in lines like: ‘Traditionally, men—adult men, which he didn’t yet consider himself among—had been interested in him for one reason, and so he had learned to be frightened of them.” The awkwardness of that “which he didn’t yet consider himself among” pervades the entire novel.

I’ve been stalling but it must now be said, the writing in this book is fucking atrocious at times. It vacillates from incoherently ungrammatical —“his mother . . . had earned her doctorate in education, teaching all the while at the public school near their house that she had deemed JB better than”, to attempts at lyricism that fall cringe-inducingly flat: “His silence, so black and total that it was almost gaseous . . .”

One wonders why these examples weren’t edited out. One wonders why so much of this 600-page, overly-indulgent misery porn wasn’t trimmed (this is called foreshadowing).
>>
3/
And speaking of plot, its structure most resembles that of a striptease: gradually and oh-so-salaciously revealing the horrifying secrets about Jude’s past until finally, we get to witness the pivotal moment of abuse, a scene in which one of his many sexual tormentors, a sadistic doctor, deliberately runs him over, leaving him as much a physical cripple as an emotional one. And these wounds pale when contrasted to Jude’s actual backstory.

In summary, it is revealed that Jude was abandoned on a trash heap as an infant, and spent his formative years in an orphanage being abused and neglected by paedophile priests. He then escapes along with what is ostensibly the only conscionable priest in that fuckhouse, only for the said priest to pimp him out to truckers and drifters. After many a traumatic rape, the evil priest is apprehended and young Jude is transferred to a youth facility…, where he continues to be repeatedly raped and abused by the counsellors and fellow inmates. Jude then attempts a second breakout, sans the evil priest this time, only to end up in the torture chamber of the sadistic doctor who will eventually cripple him years later.
>>
4/
These accounts of sufferings are recalled and echoed in the endless array of humiliations the character is forced to endure in the present-day narrative and form the backbone of the entire novel. Jude’s lameness is mocked by JB—irreparably damaging their friendship; he compulsively cuts himself with razor blades, an addiction that lands him in the hospital more than once; he rejects the loving attentions of a kindly law professor who adopts him; he takes up with a sadistic male lover who beats him repeatedly and throws him and his wheelchair down a flight of stairs (post that panel anon!); his leg wounds, in time, get to the point where the limbs have to be amputated. And just when it seems the narrative grants our protagonist a reprieve by finally gifting him a loving partner—Willem conveniently has an ‘only you’ moment late in the novel (I wish I was fucking kidding), it’s merely to crush Jude by killing Willem in a car crash, the tragedy that eventually compels Jude to suicide.

One wonders if Yanagihara even liked Jude, for she must have known that the ludicrous quantity and sheer happenstance of degradation in her story were likely to alienate attentive readers whilst jettisoning any pretence of verisimilitude. It was a point which, we now know, her editor specifically cautioned against: “This is just too hard for anybody to take…You have made this point quite adequately, and I don’t think you need to do it again”
And indeed there is something almost meaninglessly punitive in the contrived and unredeemed quality of Jude’s endless sufferings. But be it through duplicity, intransigence or the threat of an army of a03 readers, the rookie author seemed to have had her way in the end. “Not many passages that were up for cutting were cut,” the Kirkus Review bluntly observed.
>>
5/
What are we to make of this orgy of sadomasochism? Besides being, from the start, a massive cunt, Jude possesses such a contrived list of improbable talents one never actually senses a genuine human presence there. As a result, you never care enough about him to get emotionally involved in the first place, let alone be affected by his demise.

It must also be acknowledged that almost none of the characters or love affairs in the book are recognizably gay. When Willem discusses his relationship with Jude, he proclaims that “I’m not in a relationship with a man . . . I’m in a relationship with Jude,” discombobulating the average reader and leaving seasoned fujo to contemplate how sharp his chin must be.

A Little Life seems oddly devoid of the many aspects of erotic life that most urban gay men are familiar with—the pleasures of sex, the anxieties of HIV (barely mentioned), the omnipresence of Grindr and porn, of freewheeling erotic energy expressed on any numbers of platforms. When Jude tries to spice up his and Willem’s sex life and orders three “manuals,” I wondered not in what era or city but on what planet this gay man is supposed to be living on.
>>
6/
So, in closing...

A Little Life’s narrative is so thoroughly devoid of real people in its unending carnival of gratuitous and humiliating violence that the novel is rendered little more than a machine designed to produce negative emotions for the reader to wallow in—the very emotions that Yanagihara expressed interest in, the very emotions she believed men were incapable of expressing. It is in essence an incredibly bloated fanfic, The Passion of the Fujo if you will, in which the same crises and hurts and miseries are constantly rehearsed on a golden boy too precious for this world. And to merely keep showing this unhappy dynamic of suffering at work will never be a substitute for creating a meaningful narrative about it. END.

This is fucking hilarious, it sounds exactly like some 20th century misery porn BL. And the critics ate it up? Someone show them Complex or Jealousy, they would love it.
The whole thing almost sounds like a very elaborate troll, but we're in on the joke because we can recognize her fujosity from 100 miles away. How did she succeed? Are there no fujos or gay weebs in publishing? I'm in awe. Even if her writing is crap, I can't help admiring the guts it takes to unashamedly share your extreme hurt-comfort fantasy while also resisting any attempts your editor makes to improve it. I wish I had the confidence of a fujo convinced that her Ao3 fic is high art.
Thanks for the essay anon. Saved it for later in case I ever read the novel, though I probably won't. 600 pages of artless misery sounds boring when there are so many BL manga I could read instead.
Curious about her other books now, if you'd care to talk about those.

>>2932941
The last paragraph of this part is interesting considering that when I looked up A Little Life, I saw quite a few complimentary articles and reviews by men. Not obvious fudanshi either, just your garden-variety homosexuals. What does this book provide for them? Are the normie gays truly that starved for content? And how didn't the author realize that she could have traumatized Jude even further with a short "abusers on Grindr" arc, which would also both give him a reason to distrust the gay community and make the "totally straight" William seem like the safer option?

Over all my years on /lit/, I've never read as enjoyable and thorough a breakdown of a novel as this one, in the BL thread on fucking /y/. Life is beautiful and mysterious. Anon, please post more stuff like this.
>>2932949
>Are the normie gays truly that starved for content?
It's less that they're starved for content and more that their media diet only consists of the most mainstream, overhyped gay or gay-adjacent content possible. Their tendency to only touch a piece of queer media once their more cultured friends have pre-consumed it and deemed it gifable leaves them culturally anorexic. This is why they're still watching RuPaul's Drag Race, stanning pop divas who only care about their money, and catching reruns of Glee and Modern Family. Also, remember this book came out a while ago, things were even worse seven years ago. For all its flaws, A Little Life must've blown their fucking minds.

This dumb idea popped into my head. Is there anything thats like fight club? A guy getting harassed or coerced into doing stuff by an imaginary friend. Im not sure what's funnier, if he knows the friend is imaginary or not. Maybe a straight lead male who is badgered by his childhood imaginary gay friend, who is basically stuck to line of sight of the main lead but can talk and make it feel like hes touching him ( look at other peoples junk in the bathroom urinals or all yell right in your ear all day!/gives him boners at the worst moments) and spends all his time trying to turn him.
Could go all freddy krueger where when the main sleeps his at the mercy of his sadist gay imaginary friend.
>>
>>2933093
Hmm, i guess ghosts could have something like that, gonna have to search for gay ghosts
>>
>>2933093
The best I can think of is One Room Angel. The worst, that one fucking ghost child manga by Matsumoto Noda. But I feel like I've seen something that fits what you're suggesting more closely.
I guess there's also Reflections in the Water from the oneshot collection Itsuka Ame ga Furu You ni, which was also made into a movie called Itsuka no Kimi e. Whether there's genuine coercion or just insanity is unclear, but it's nice enough. The problem with all of these though is that it sounds like you're looking for more of a comedy, and these all play their concepts straight. I'll keep thinking, I'm sure I've heard of something that fits your description better.
>>
>>2933188
WAIT. HANG ON.
Kunieda Saika who did Reflections in the Water also did a whole bunch of ghost stuff and, more importantly, an imaginary friend manga! The imaginary friend story is just a oneshot but it's the closest thing I can think of to what you're asking for. Comedy, coercion, and a clingy imaginary friend. It's called May Miracle.

I found one of Poppy’s books at the used book store today (Are You Loathsome Tonight), it seemed incredibly edgy but I was expecting it. When I was younger I read some of Cliver Barker’s books and the graphicness of Poppy Z Brite always came up. There was some kind of gay zombie/cannibal story that I flipped to but it’s harder to stomach compared to looking at zombl manga

That one is “Self-Made Man” by Poppy. Now that I’m looking at it again it’s about cannibalism, not zombies. Might even be a fanfic about Jeffrey Dahmer.

For Clive Barker he has a bunch of short stories in The Books of Blood, and a couple of those with gay characters or male relationships are “In the Hills, In the Cities,” “Human Remains” and “Pig Blood Blues”.

>>
>>2933483
Weed is not that popular in Japan and it's heavily penalized for a light drug it is. The couple times a celebrity was caught smoking weed, they had their careers ruined because of it. Meth on the other hand has a long-running history and is not uncommon esp among yakuza. Partly because of the association

Drug use is very stigmatized and almost never presented in a neutral light.

We were talking BL age not (y)our age though. And no but hopefully one day.
>>
>>2933656
>So shoujofags back in the day were all cool with BL?
The genre was as its infancy basically, and so was the whole manga industry. A lot of things you could do today you couldn't do nowadays. Also BL was basically almost a political movement.
>>
>>2933657
Sounds neat, wish I had a time machine.

>>2933656
Depends on the person, but in general some of BL classics from 24nengumi were and still are read and appreciated by people who aren't fujo or into the homo aspect of the manga. They even used to be featured in general audiences manga related TV programmes like BS Manga Yawa. Kazeki still can be found in some school libraries. BL as a genre got shifted to a 'shameful' category when it became more mainstream and smut oriented.

Social commentary, explore what it means to be homosexual in a world with compulsory heterosexuality. I thought it was interesting, usually these stories don't even bother.

I think it's kinda weird in a harem manga people read for the girls, but eh.

Ennead was always brutal, but the lead up to episode 93 made me pause in the middle of the chapter because I just did not want to actually hear the cult leader say they were fucking corpses. Just a heads up, Chinese bl novels translators like 78zao are starting to mass delete their translations. So make copies now
>>
>>2934229
What is it this time?
>>
>>2934235
Jjwxc is entering the international market but only mainland Chinese translators are allowed. Mtl will also be sold there.
I don't fucking know why is everyone deleting their stuff now, half of it is too obscure to be featured immediately and the rest is locked on jjwxc completely. The most schizo japanese translators look sane compared to these people
>>
I'll ask again in the next thread but does anyone have Tunhai EPUB?
>>
>>2934238
>Jjwxc enters to sell MTLed heavily censored versions of danmei
They really hate the idea of western danmei fandom and our translators just pussy out in their favor, great. If MTLed manga are bad, prepare for the tasteless slog any 'corrected MTL' novels read like.
>>
>>2934286
>>2934238
Oh, just to add to that, tt informs me that in typical Chinese business fashion, any submitted translations automatically belong to jjwxc who can do whatever with them, all for peanut payout. What a deal!
>>
>>2934286
Mxtx money must've been too good.
So we are entering a self censorship era, Chinese style. So now some of the works are locked on Chinese and English sites at the same time kek.
Over the course of one day most translation got nuked by the translators themselves. Has anyone saved anything?
>>
It’s amazing how much the eng danmei translation scene just destroyed itself without jjwxc having to threaten to sue them. Not even kamen rider fan sub groups are this spineless and toei has been going after them for years.
>>
>>2934304
That's probably because jjwxc like a smart company they are didn't forbid reposting existing translations to their service, therefore taking them from existing groups and using them however they like. Most didn't seem scared about copyright, they didn't want their work ripped out of their hands.
>>
>>2934304
Even japanese novel translators give a week to save the licensed work before taking it down. What's happening now is a peak schizo behavior

Sad to only see one list of predictions this time, so I'm going to make a few of my own. I have a bad track record with these, but let's go.
>China's novel ban and the OTT reaction of the novel fan translators will lead to a backlash against Chinese BL, but Seven Seas will still release a few more novels.
>in that vein, someone will license Saye.
>that one Tibetan BL will be licensed too.
>subverse will sadly continue to expand this year.
>yankee will take a back seat to yakuza this year.
>A really weird manga will be a surprising hit in-thread, perhaps by a new mangaka.
>Dear Gene will end and anons will cry. (I probably will, at least.)
>Sousei Yugi will turn out to not be very gay.
>Ten Dance, on the other hand, will.
>Chainsaw Man's anime will be a hit, but it won't lead to that many djs due to the lack of an obvious gay rival pairing that appeals to modern tastes.
Would be cool to see a few more predictions before this thread is archived! Here's to another year.

I'm so horrible at predicting stuff that you can probably count on the opposite, but I also felt bad for our neglected topic question.
>Futekiya will either close or change their business model (maybe focus on Renta-style shallow shit and/or start charging per title)
>A new publisher for Thai or Taiwanese BL will appear
>The trend for ojisan bottoms will turn into a trend for ojisan tops
>Dom/sub verse actually won't get much bigger because it's too much of an omegaverse 2.0
>there will be more and more of college student BL instead of highschool student BL
>at least one oldschool mangaka will come out of retirement to draw something surprisingly good
>more sickly sweet BL where the couple has loveydovey sex with no plot
>Azuma Kaya will start a new manga apart from Gene (since Sakurada-senpai sequel ended a while ago)
>We'll get another bunch of gay shoujo like Sasaki to Miyano, Kimi ni Todokanai etc
