is there an media library manager equivalent like MediaMonkey for Windows available in the Linux world?
>>
>>107198078
They link to Systemd libraries or in the case of things like Snaps (Canonical is heavily pushing Snaps even for things like Firefox) depend on it for core functionality. Systemd is much more than just an init system. It's a system interface.

Drag-drop should just work. Unless you're using Flatpaks and the Flatpak application you're trying to drag into doesn't have read permissions to the location you're dragging from. Which is just your specific Flatpak app settings being misconfigured and GNOME being shit for not spawning a popup window which leads you to Flatpak permission settings.

I installed Fedora on a new laptop the other day. Thought it would be a horrible pain in the ass because I've read horror stories about trying to put Linux on a laptop that doesn't officially support it.

Everything went flawlessly. Didn't even need to install any new drivers. The half hour I spent on Windows trying to set up a partition without signing into anything was infinitely worse than anything I experienced once I got onto the Linux partition.

Is this because it's a Lenovo? It's not even a ThinkPad…

Do you think the Gnome Foundation is a little jealous that the Steamcube will be using the KDE desktop environment instead of Gnome?
>>
>>107200923
Maybe? KDE has always worked better for games compared to GNOME. Like back in the day the original Steam Machines that flopped used Debian+GNOME.
Now that Valve know that their Arch+KDE mix is working really well, they're sticking with it. Can't wait to see the prices for the new hardware, all of it is very tempting.

systemd socket services API allows it to allocate shared resources for programs before they're launched (ports, domain sockets, fifos, ...), launch the program when the resource is first used, and then with Linux kernel proprietary juju pass them to the program as if the program itself created them. As opposed to hacks like inetd which only work if you spawn a new process for every connection.

It's actually not even a systemd dependency since s6 supports the same API. Just basic requirement for anything that claims to be a serious Linux service manager.

say hi to the (not so) newest host in my array of loonix devices: gpu01, its purpose is to execute heavy gpu loads (duh) on demand

some background:
it originally had a 6700XT card and windows 11 (still has) that I used for gayming and windows stuff, but realized that I don't really use windows that much so I slapped in a 3090, and it will now serve a double function as AI generation/training node and also gayming, of course running loonix instead

Anyone here have any experience with modifying libreboot?

I'm testing how lbmk works by trying to build a rom for qemu with just GRUB (and then later inserting a splash image and messing with the rest of the available configurations), but I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I already built a rom as-is by running
./mk -b coreboot qemu...
, but that yields roms with both seabios and GRUB. Per the documentation: https://libreboot.org/docs/maintain/porting.html#coreboot-config, (if I understood it right), then first I run
./mk -m coreboot qemu...
, make my configurations in the curses menu, save it, and then run
./mk -b coreboot qemu...
.

Since I already have roms built for that coreboot tree, am I supposed to run
./mk -c (or -x) coreboot qemu...
first and then do the aforementioned commands, or is that just for when moving onto working on a different board?

I would say yes. I have a ThinkpadT430 that needed to be attached to an outlet when I was using Windows 7 but just last night I forgot I didn't have the charger plugged into the wall and I was surprised how long it lasted (running Mint); it didn't even suspend, I noticed the battery level. I'd say it just about doubled the battery life but it's still pretty irrelevent because it still needs to be plugged in and charging.

Anyone able to get switchable graphics working between AMD and Nvidia? Picked up a Lenovo Legion 5 2025 edition and just got done putting Tumbleweed on it.

My bios allows me to choose integrated, discrete, or hybrid graphics. Integrated works great, and so does discrete.

My issue is hybrid drops me to a black screen, I can force my way in by swapping back and forth between the terminal. When I try to run anything it seems to give drm errors on the Nvidia GPU. I've tried to use nvidia_drm.modeset=1, but no dice.

Also is the new Grub2-BLS, that OpenSUSE recently switched to also a little glitchy looking for anyone else?

It's display protocol server there are two main display protocol servers and those are X and Wayland.

To make it understandable it simply makes your apps to communicate... or to even more simpler It takes what apps want to show and puts it on your monitor.

X is the original old one it started in 1980
Wayland started 2008 but it's not flashed out at all and it causes problems. While some apps might be better on it it's still piece of shit.
>>
>>107205739
No.
GPU drivers do their energy management better on Windows and it will completely wreck your battery life if the discrete GPU is always on, which can be the case on Linux.
You can tinker and fix this, of course, or you can be lucky and it works straight away... but the expectation is a worse battery life.

If you are ready to tinker, you can undervolt your CPU, use tlp to set limits and energy saving features and do all sorts of things and it will surpass Windows batter life. But without that, expect worse.

I did tinker with quite a few settings (all through the UI) and there's a satisfying amount of options to configure; it actually feels like I'm in control compared to Windows where I have to fight with the OS to do what I want/need it to, and at that point it's way easier to just learn Linux.
>if you want to learn make an virtual machine

i get 5 hours out of a laptop batteries that are originally 4.5 hours and the battery is 10+ years old with 70% capacity

but you need to do some "tinkering", in my case changing governor to powersafe, adjusting brightness to reasonable (not even for battery's sake, just so that my eyes dont bleed) and using CLI/lightweight software with interface that doesnt update often
i also hove some other devices where this method extends battery life way beyond what is originally possible even tho the battery is half dead

Just how much of a headache is Nvidia these days? Any horror stories that don't just boil down to user issue, or is it basically fine?
Currently in a tossup between 9070XT and 5070Ti for my next build, upgrading from a 6800. Gayming performance seems approximately equivalent (with maybe some caveats around DX12 support under Proton?), I don't use Wayland so don't really care about Nvidia's issues there, AMD is cheaper but I've been dabbling in Blender and Nvidia seems overwhelmingly better for that.

Hello there!
Last time I was here I had some questions and you gave me lot of good advice. I'm planning on dual-booting Win10 and Mint on physically separate drives. I already have Win10 on the drive1 and I had just acquired new drive2. With your advice, reading stuff on internet, watching YT and talking to ChatGPT I've come with this final plan:
0. Make a Windows back up in the case of fuck up.
1. Add new drive2 to the system and unplug drive1 (Win10 drive).
2. Install Mint normally on it from the USB (standard install, select the "Erase disk and install Linux Mint" option).
3. Shutdown, plug drive1 back, turn on. If the Mint isn't the default boot, make it in the UEFI BIOS.
4. In the Mint run sudo update-grub so it now detects Win10.
5. Edit default/grub so whichever I have chosen last becomes the default.
Do you see any install problem or future-problem with my plan? Apart from the installation itself, a few thing I've read is to disable fast startup in Win10 and configure both systems to threat hardware clock the same way (both UTC or both local time).

I have a T430 with Debian testing that hadn't been updated in awhile. Ran a full dist-upgrade and now my keyboard inputs are being eaten by something. I have to click onto my desktop for anything to start accepting keyboard inputs. Even if nothing is open and I login or unlock the computer, keyboard inputs won't go through until I click the desktop.

I don't really know where to start looking to fix this. Any ideas?

I'm brand new to Linux, I've been using Windows computers since... Christ, 2000?
The initial setup was kind of scary and stressful. Stuff kept breaking, I didn't know how to do command line stuff by myself, I had to figure out how to get fuckin hardware acceleration to work in Firefox, stuff like that.
But after that initial setup period concluded and I'm at a point where I'm just doing regular day to day stuff on my computer like it was my Windows desktop, it feels just great. Everything's so much smoother and more convenient than it was on Windows, options in Windows all feel fucking buried under a million different windows you had to open, but here everything is just where you'd expect it to be because it's not designed by a schizophrenic retard.
Do others have similar experiences to this? The initial setup being confusing and stressful then everything being smooth sailing after?

Backup is a good plan.

Note that if you have secure boot fuckery enabled, Windows may freak out if you change the boot order. If you have encrypted the Windows boot disk you'll need your recovery key (in general you should have that handy somewhere if you use BitLocker).

On my system I use the hardware (BIOS) boot selection hotkey to select which disk to boot from e.g. you probably don't have to mess with GRUB at all.

Looking at it more, this is with archinstall, one of the steps apparently involves its own invocation of reflector.

I ran reflector myself and saw that the topmost output looks to be some rsync mirror from China.

Could that be the cause of my woes? I don't know how to tell what mirror is being used through this method.

You should always run reflector with your own flags that match your situation. Archinstall's must be quite general.

Okay, this time I ran archinstall without touching the "Mirrors and repositories" section and now I'm getting about 2-3 MiB/s. Probably could be better, but still a big improvement over before.

So does that section affect the mirror list archinstall draws from? I was under the impression that that would be the mirror list that would get loaded into the installed OS.

I mostly agree, but Dolphin is definitely the superior file manager. And KDE Connect works a lot better than GSConnect from my experience.
>What are some Gnome tweaks/addons for getting that usual Start Menu
I guess you can start with "Dash to Panel". But I think it's only for the panel (taskbar), not the application menu. I personally vastly prefer full screen app menus so I never bothered customizing it on Gnome. Even on KDE I always enable the Application Dashboard.

>>107212245
I just checked by reducing the global animation speed to a minimum. The blur definitely starts applying just like other effects. It's just following a different animation curve where it only starts applying around the middle of the transition.
My only guess is that they either misconfigured the animation curve for blur specifically, or that they intentionally did this to minimize the duration of the blur since it's one of the most resource demanding visual effects. Or maybe they just like the way it looks when transitioning, who knows. You can always just ask on their forum.

du shows disk usage, not the size of (a group of) files.

I swear people should be locked out of system-level tools until they pass a certification and use some physical token to unlock said tools. Disk, CPU, memory usage – everything under lock. If you want to read those you'd call a certified engineer to read them and interpret them for you.
/rant
>>
>>107214227
Assuming they used the same filesystem for both then the disk usage should still be the same. It doesn't really make sense for there to be discrepancy unless you're using something like compression, etc, which could legitimately result in less space usage on one.

If the file data is actually identical then it's probably just filesystem wastage, don't worry about it too much. Small files in particular always waste a significant but ultimately irrelevant proportion of space.

Wanted to ssh in as part of a thing to setup a web server running from Android. However that may be redundant as I can using rsync over ssh. BTW, if you run
>$ rsync -a --info=progress2 user1@10.0.0.130:/hdd1/example1/ user2@10.0.0.132:/hdd2/example2/
Then you'll get this error:
>The source and destination cannot both be remote.
However, if you mount one of them via sshfs, then both source and destination CAN be remote. So "user1@10.0.0.130:/example1/" could be replaced with "/mnt/sshfs/user1/hdd1/".

Anyways, I was looking at https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/host-a-web-server-on-android and that guide is incomplete because ssh will ask you for a password when trying to ssh into Android (but there is no password so you'll be stuck). Steps for Android <7: (1) install Termux APK and give it storage permissions (2) Update repo and install software: "pkg update; pkg install openssh nmap wget curl" (3) Make a public key, "ssh-keygen -t ed25519", and copy it to a newline in desktop computer at ~/.ssh/authorized_keys (4) Copy ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub (created by ssh-keygen a while ago) from desktop computer to authorized_keys in Android. May need to turn off password-auth and enable key-auth in desktop computer. (5) In Android, startup ssh and get info: "sshd; whoami; ifconfig; nmap -sV 127.0.0.1" (6) In desktop computer running Linux: ssh -p $portFromNmap $userFromWhoami@$ipFromIfconfig

I did a fresh install of Arch Linux on my new SSD. Last night when I was installing 2 games at once my whole system started breaking down which gave me the impression my SSD got corrupted. My KDE went black, Steam was saying "Disk failed", all console commands weren't working, and when I got back to the TTY login screen that stopped working too. Strangely when I rebooted my machine everything was working perfectly fine again, even my downloads were fine. I wondered if I had done something wrong with partitioning my SSD--on my Western Digital Blue 4TB SN5000 I opted for 4096 byte sectors and I partitioned everything starting from sector 256 which should be good for alignment. For the partitions I just followed the 1GB boot/4GB swap/rest scheme. Is this concerning or was it just bad luck? I do recall the wiki warning about 4096 size sectors, would that be the case?

If I see correctly this is an nvme. It might be a similar issue to the Samsung 990 Pro. That one sometimes shits itself unless you disable power saving.
I did that by adding nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0 to my linux start parameters in grub.

Last time I checked if you want to manually install a specific version of the nVidia driver you practically have to build the OS image yourself.
But other than that, the complete opposite of what he said is true. The whole point of atomic distros is to not waste your time building an OS yourself like you would do on "traditional" distros like Arch, Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, etc.
Saying Atomic distros are a waste of time is like saying Android or iOS are a waste of time compared to UBPorts or Plasma Mobile. It's a take made by out of touch morons who haven't touched grass in months.

>>107216375
Bazzite with KDE Plasma interface or Aurora Linux. Anything else with KDE is also an option, but unless you're really into system maintenance or have a very specific use case you should avoid non-atomic/non-immutable distros.
>>
>>107216653
SSDs can and do fail, it may not have been anything you did. Run diagnostics and RMA if there's errors. There's an "nvme" command line utility to manage these drives.

>I wondered if I had done something wrong with partitioning my SSD--on my Western Digital Blue 4TB SN5000 I opted for 4096 byte sectors
Partition block size has nothing to do with hardware sectors. It's nice if they match and are both 4KB along with the system page size, but it's not an issue otherwise.

>>107216777
>nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0
You don't need to be that aggressive, just prevent the deeper modes, which you can find with smartctl -c /dev/nvme0.

>>107216368
If you ever want to modify the base system you have to write it out as a recipe and then rebuild the image. And you have to reboot every time you change the image. The nVidia driver problem Bazzite tranny is talking about is basically any system change more complicated than editing a couple files.

>>107216899
>Saying Atomic distros are a waste of time is like saying Android or iOS are a waste of time compared to UBPorts or Plasma Mobile
Android and iOS only save you time because a team at the mfg spent thousands of hours creating an image for that device. A gaming PC is a device which exists in a quantity of one and has one user. LARPing like you're building something for thousands of people to use is retarded.

Got a complex security device like a Trezor? Full rebuild. Weird combo printer with special drivers and you don't want to buy a new one? Full rebuild. cdemu for old games? Full rebuild.

For a gaming distro the nVidia driver problem should be an instant disqualifier by itself. A lot of other gaming hardware has weird ass drivers that you can't count on the Bazzite diversity squad to set up for you.

Dev only really writes about it in a dense detailed way like a devlog so if you don't already have a strong background it impenetrable. He'd need people to decipher it and preset/package for mere mortals and that is very unlikely to ever happen.

KDE Plasma has a really good and Windows-like UI. You can also customize almost everything about it. If you're too lazy to manually customize it it does have a built-in theme store. There's even Windows XP, 7, 10 and 11 themes in it.

GNOME, despite looking like an aborted Android clone by default, has several extensions which can make it look and feel like Windows. ZorinOS is a good showcase of this since it ships with those extensions by default and it's passable as a Windows 10/11 clone.

Cinnamon is similar to what Windows 7 would be, that's why Mint is often recommended to Windows users. It's kind of ugly by default but it has a built-in theme manager just like KDE.

I would say these 3 are your best picks if you're looking for a Windows-adjecent DE.
I've used all 3 and that's pretty much the order I'd rate them in. KDE > GNOME > Cinnamon > other DEs.
That said, I'm not sure which is the most faithful to being "windows-like" since I'm not really looking for a Windows UI in my DEs.

Mint is fine, but the packages aren't super up to date so keep that in mind (unless you use nothing but Flatpaks). Think of it as the Linux version of Windows 7, it feels slightly "old" but just works, Cinnamon is comfy and easy to use. If you want something Arch-based, you could try Endeavour or Cachy, they're basically Arch but you get an easier, graphical installation as well as some goodies, and also more up to date stuff by default (compared to Debian based distributions), depending on your luck you may need to fix stuff here and there (because Linux isn't perfect), but the Arch wiki has really good info not only for Arch but Linux in general. Finally, ignore what shills say, you can get backups and snapshots of your system regardless of which distribution you choose (look into btrfs and Timeshift), just don't run random shell scripts from github and you should be fine, use whatever you find convenient, it's your computer.
