>>
>>4792168
huh, that's funny, it looks just like a juvenile rock dove to me.
>>
>>4792973
Yeah but aren’t dodos just a kind of flightless pigeon? I’m sure they looked basically exactly like OP.
>>
>>4792977
you're right Anon, dodos and urban pigeons are all members of the family Columbidae. Such a shame they don't still exist, I bet they would make good companion animals.
>>
>One of the original names for the dodo was the Dutch "Walghvoghel", first used in the journal of Dutch Vice Admiral Wybrand van Warwijck, who visited Mauritius during the Second Dutch Expedition to Indonesia in 1598. Walghe means "tasteless", "insipid", or "sickly", and voghel means "bird". The name was translated by Jakob Friedlib into German as Walchstök or Walchvögel. The original Dutch report titled Waarachtige Beschryving was lost, but the English translation survived:

>>On their left hand was a little island which they named Heemskirk Island, and the bay it selve they called Warwick Bay... Here they taried 12. daies to refresh themselues, finding in this place great quantity of foules twice as bigge as swans, which they call Walghstocks or Wallowbirdes being very good meat. But finding an abundance of pigeons & popinnayes [parrots], they disdained any more to eat those great foules calling them Wallowbirds, that is to say lothsome or fulsome birdes.
>>
I want them back bros :(
>>
>>4792991
The worst part is with enough effort we could totally get thylacines or mammoths back but with dodos they went completely scorched earth so there’s not even a trace of them left besides drawings.
>>
>>4792991
Ehhh we have enough large flightless birds around let them rest in peace

Turkeys are literally superior dodos in every way. Even with coyotes and coywolve populations in my region skyrocketing, they’re fucking everywhere, you still always have to stop in the road for crossing swarms of turkeys. But dodos immediately died because weasels suddenly exist?
Kneel.

The character Thursday Next has a v1.2 pet dodo named Pickwick but since the sequencing technology wasn't perfected until v1.7, Pickwick lacks wings altogether. She laid an egg which hatched into a son, Alan, who currently lives with Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.

No one cares about your autistic pet peeves seethe I guess queer
>>
>>4792991
I guarantee that if they got brought back people would immediately hate or stop caring at all about them because in the end they are in reality, just extra large ground pigeons.
>>
>>4793347
Basically. The ‘fascination’ with them really only exists because they’re extinct.
>>
>>4793027
I thought dodos died because they were the alpha predators of their island and didn't thus fear anything, so human sailors could just walk up to them and quickly kill them. I heard they also made a cry to call for help when hurt, which drew in other dodos, who also then got killed.
>>
>>4792999
>not even a trace left
We've got some sub-fossil bones and a head. That's it.
