We are more about abstract perfumery in these threads
>>
>>18107912
worry not, we find both your shitty dior hommo complimenterino worship and the literal fat gay nigger shilling bois imperial extraordinarily funny.
>>
>>18107917
how long have you been posting here? If anything, frag has been about finding high quality, unique frags for amazing prices - not abstract fragrances. Encore Noire is a prime example of this. Most abstract fragrances aren’t worth more than a single discussion, and they’re overpriced. If you were right (you aren’t) the fragrance chart would only include obscure shit nobody has tried. Just give it up dude, you hyper-niche autists are what has ruined this place and you know it.
>>
>>18107921
encre noire sucks cock lol
>>
>>18107912
We talk about the art of perfumery in these threads, why on earth would we be discussing the "complimentability" of a boring drone clone flanker?
>>
>>18107922
You haven’t been posting here long, thanks for confirming that you zoomer fraud shill. I’ve been posting here for over a decade, like I said you fags have ruined this place. Go spray yourself down with some vintage cat piss and take a breather nigga
>>
>>18107921
Youth dew, aromatics elixir, mitsuoko are all excellent abstract perfume and affordable, what on earth are you talking about. Encre Noire is abstract! You simply are not conceptually prepared to step into the Dojo of the perfume thread and flex your chops. Stick to the porch and let the big dogs sniff in peace.
>>

You guys haven’t spoken about the artistry of perfumery at all since I’ve been posting, you’re all just bitching. Go ahead, discuss faggot - let’s see what you have to say.
>>
>>18107930
No you are a newfag, it’s just a blatant fact after what you said about EN. Anyone who has been a smellywater collector knows that it had its time and place - however you’re clearly a fetus, so you didn’t live through that time. To say that frag sucks is actually insane, it completely revolutionized cheapie fragrances and proved that you can get a fragrance of niche quality for a 1/3rd of the price of designers that are far worse. You’re just a larping newfag
>>
>>18107934
>encre noire revolutionized fragrances
LMFAOOOOOO
>>
>>18107935
>misquoting what I said to try and make it sound worse because it’s objectively true
I accept your concession, you didn’t live through the peak of cheapie frags and now you’ve been relegated to buying Arab clones. I’d be mad too honestly.
>>
>>18107885
Whether you get compliments or not depends on the wearer and if they're hot. If you're hot, you will get compliments for anything due to the halo effect and vice versa. Don't wear fragrances for women and compliments.
>>
>>18107940
hey buddy, i don’t know how to break this to you, but brut came out in 1968 and it’s $3. and it also smells a lot better than encre noire, but the bar was already on the floor in that regard.

Just decided to say fuck it and ordered half of the fragrances I still want.
Still have 3-4 non-discontinued perfumes I want, but I need to space them out so I can actually wear and enjoy them individually for a bit.
Also never knew Rogue had 50ml bottles, and now you all know as well.

What are other examples where the Flanker is far more well known than the original? Ultra Male for Le Male? Though I feel like Le Male was very popular and most people known Ultra Male to be a flanker of it.
>>
>>18108175
La Nuit de L'Homme is definitely more popular than L'Homme. Le Male is less popular than the flankers these days, but it's arguably one of the most popular fragrances of it's time, so I don't know if I'd count it. Same with the ADG flankers. They probably sell better now, but the original is a legendary fragrance in terms of sheer popularity
>>
>>18108176
>They probably sell better now, but the original is a legendary fragrance in terms of sheer popularity
Acqua di Gio is the best selling men's fragrance of all time. It's still a top seller.

>>
>>18108245
I'd argue Dylan Blue is definitely getting close if not already in that territory. I feel like people talk about that one as its own fragrance more than a flanker of Versace pour Homme. It may as well be its own release anyway, they smell nothing alike.

It was one of my first niche perfumes. Only have a 30ml bottle of it though, wasn't all too thrilled to pay more than a $100 for a bottle when I was starting out.
>>
>>18108257

I paid $80 for that bottle of Bianchi, so it isn't much off from what I paid for Mousse Illuminee. Jomashop carries Bianchi fragrances. The most expensive perfume I own is $420 for 30ml (I paid $250 for a second hand bottle). I don't regret it at all, I understand a number genuine ingredients are increasingly more difficult to come by and are worth far more than their weight in gold.

Tsvga Fiona has pretty much every animalic note possible. Areej le Dore just released a new collection based on animal musks, Cuirtis has like 3 or 4 different kinds of castoreum and beaver tail oil in it, I'll post my thoughts on that one next week when I get it. And the skunk oil frag, Forbidden Flower, but that one's not supposed to be too overpowering, skunk musk is obviously a powerful substance.

Why does people even care about top notes? They’re gone after 30 min. Most of the time I haven’t even gotten to where I’m going by that time so no one ever smells the top notes. I guess you can argue that they’re for the person wearing it, but then I’d rather just buy a candle. This is why houses like Creed fucking suck bc the only thing good about their fragrances are the top notes. Every creed fragrance after 30-40 minutes is insanely boring.
>>
>>18109003
because most people are low attention span retards who buy perfumes based on their top notes and their top notes alone, so of course perfume houses are going to blow their ingredients budget on their top notes. it’s not their problem what happens after the bottle is sold and the consumer realizes that the overpriced dreck they bought dries down to a faceless woody amber base.
>>
>>18108995
fair enough, it was free so no great loss.
>>
>>18109003
when most people try perfumes, they try them on strips at the store for a few seconds. so most people only get the opening and not even on skin. so most people only care about the opening.

Only reason I wouldn't put it on the list is because, despite the original being vastly overshadowed by the flankers at this point, I still feel like most people are aware that there is an original. What is the ubiquitous "old man" smell found in a lot of older fragrances? I always assumed it was oakmoss, but there's oakmoss in plenty of things that don't have that smell. Is it carnation?
>>
>>18109390
no one but you can answer this, because no single “old man smell” exists. it’s an association you formed with specific older men you met in your life that no one else but you has.
>>
>>18109390
honestly, i think it's florals in general. we've moved so far past that in men's fragrances. rose and carnation are huge "old man" notes. same with vetiver, although we still see it a lot.
>>
>>18109390
Depends on exactly what you're referring to, but it's likely a combination of oakmoss, citrus and carnation that used to be in everything but fell out of fashion in the late 80s. It's definitely in fragrances like eau Sauvage, Drakkar Noir, Polo green, Bois de Portugal and a lot of the older barbershop fragrances. Habit Rouge kind of has it in the immediate opening, and all the notes I listed are present in that fragrance, but it's not nearly as pronounced for some reason.

I should also point out that I like all of those fragrances lest someone become outraged by me calling their 40+ year old fragrance kind of dated smelling. Something about those old scents open weird but dry down very pleasantly to my nose.

>>18109404
This is also true. It's rare to find a men's fragrance that actually smells like flowers these days. They're still used as supporting notes, but even men's fragrances where rose is a primary note don't actually smell like a bouquet of roses. I don't know nearly enough about the alchemy of it all to say how the fuck they achieve this, but they somehow take the floral component out of the rose accord while leaving behind the sweet/somewhat winey smelling component. They somehow create a scent that simultaneously smells like roses but not like flowers. It's all very strange.

But that's what I like about Habit Rouge. It's a masculine rose scent that isn't afraid to smell floral. It smells of freshly cut roses and I'm there for it.

Vetiver for sure.

it's always funny to me how hard brands like Creed or PdM try to connect themselves to some non-existant royal heritage when you can literally just buy something like Guerlain's EDC Imperiale for 50$ and have a fragrance that is well-documented as being comissioned by Napoleon III
>>
>>18109621
What's particularly funny about the whole thing is just how well it worked and is, some fucking how, still working. People used to justify Creed's pricing because of their special snowflake maceration method, while Guerlain was ACTUALLY doing what Creed claimed to be doing (right down to sourcing ingredients globally and making many of their oils in house by hand) and selling their fragrances for completely reasonable industry-standard prices. And unlike Creed, Guerlain fragrances are actually stable and smell consistent batch to batch.

Guerlain is based. But you’re not finding $50 bottles anymore. Now that they went to square bottles and charge more the demand went up. People are retarded. I’m glad I bought so many bottles while they were cheap.
>>
>>18109656
you can pick your own samples. my last two months were $10 for .27oz samples. that doesnt seem unreasonable at all.
>>
>>18109676
>>18109656
forgot to mention, you get more uses out of it and you can still acquire a nice amount of scents.
>>
>>18109674
To be fair, the price of everything has gone up since coof. I don't think $40 was ever the msrp, though. All the old school fragrances still used to cost $80-$100 at Macy's and the like, it's just that nobody ever bought them there because they were always at TJ Maxx and Marshalls for half price. Obsession costs $120 at Macy's right now. That's actual fucking insanity. I've been buying Obsession for my dad for Father's day since I was like 16 and have never paid more than $30 for a bottle.

I'm still alright with paying a slight premium though, because unlike most of the other old school fragrances that only exist as shadows of their former former selves, Guerlain actually keeps full time in-house perfumers on the payroll whose sole job is to make sure that the classics survive IFRA hijinks. For the longest time that was Jean-Paul's job after the buyout. I think Wasser does it now. He was talking about it on one of the fragtube channels a while back.
>>
>>18109674
>Now that they went to square bottles and charge more the demand went up
I think it has more to do with LVMH tightening up distribution. They're trying to rebrand Guerlain as more of a lux house. You really can't get anything other than a handful of Aqua Allegorias at most department stores now.

Unless there's some dank new alpha-zoomie meme I'm unfamiliar with and Vetiver is the new Rasasi Hawas. In which case... Based I guess? I'd much rather smell that everywhere than Rasasi fucking Hawas

I'm sure the resident vintagetard will argue the pre-wide release early 19th century version is the only one worth smelling
but it's not like there were any animalics or oakmoss there to be removed, so the overall scent is probably still similar to back in the day
>>
>>18110133
It was a family owned business for a long time. Why would they throw away a nice formula fit for royalty? Anyway, last time I was at the flagship store they had original formula bottles on display. I own a couple vintage bottles from the early 1900s I suspect and they smell great. I also tested the modern formulation and it smelled very similar. They do a good job at reformulations. Sure vintage is best, especially with the real civet in Jicky and Habit Rouge edc, or the Mysore sandalwood in heritage, or the heavy oakmoss in vetiver, but the modern versions are nice too.

I'm pretty sure half the reason Sauvage sells as well as it does is because it makes other fragrances smell worse in comparison. If you've ever smelled a bunch of fragrances at the fragrance counter in succession, Sauvage always smells richer and more vibrant than everything else. It doesn't matter if you smell it first or after trying 50 other fragrances, it always smells the same, and it's the only fragrance I've ever encountered that seems to never be effected by the sort of quasi-olfactory fatigue you get from smelling too many fragrances at one time.

It's pretty nice, not really offensive in any way. Cuirtis is an animal, an intense leather oud that will likely just get stronger with time. There's something very familiar about it I can't really place. I haven't tried Cuirtis on skin yet so it'll be interesting to see how it changes.

I’ve gone through everything in the top half so far (plus moth) and it looks like my prediction is going to hold true; they’re essentially the Canadian version of ELDO.

Which is to say they have a few big hits (probably), a few hard flops, and a bunch of mediocre things that are somewhere between ‘okay’ and ‘good’.
I’d argue they trade having slightly better branding/marketing than ELDO, but slightly less interesting fragrances.

Thus far 3/20 were straight up foul - oddly enough Cockatiel and Dodo were the worst. Hyrax was weird, and frankly I’m surprised I didn’t *dislike* it more than I did, but it still wasn’t good.

3/20 were slightly off-putting - Bee has this very strange synthetic sweetness that I believe they refer to as the “royal jelly accord”, Bat was mostly just earthy soil, and Dodo Jackfruit covered up original Dodo’s rotten scent with a bit of fruit, but the rot was still there.

Cow was a bit interesting but nothing crazy, Camel is basically ELDO’s Spice Must Flow, Harvest Mouse is Pineward’s Hayride.

So far my favorite two have been Koala, a great mint tea scent although I don’t love the dry down, and Macaque Fuji Apple, which is surprisingly clean and fresh though I can really only discern the apple scent after directly comparing it to the Yuzu version.

Been trying 'clean' fragrances lately, and what I've learned is that I don't like citruses too much, specifically those that have 'lemon-candy' openings. Stuff like ADP Colonia, Eau De Rochas Homme, Eau Sauvage are all examples of this. I also hate cheap blue synthetic shower/hair gel smells like Chrome Extreme or any sweet synthetic stuff like YSL Y.

What I do like is clean laundry, soapy, maybe some woods, citrus with no candy feel, not powdery, not fruity. Gentle Fluidity Silver, Green Irish Tweed, Khiels Original Musk, Dior Cologne, Prada Amber Pour Homme I all like. Platinum Egoiste and Cool Water, too. Do you have any recommendations for fragrances like this?

If you like apple, Macaque Fuji Apple, or Beaver takes it a bit clean floral to my nose.

Bon Monsieur or Fougère L'Aube are both clean/green, Champs Lunaires for floral.

Alfiryn by Pineward smells like liquid fabric softener in a very natural and yet uncanny way. It’s not at all in the notes but I get the same thing from Ponderosa.

Phtaloblue is also infamous for being the most synthetically smelling “clean” scent out there, but it’s smack dab in the uncanny valley of “clean” scents.

Opening is a nice citrus that is reminiscent of lemon candy or lemonade. And as it dries, that refreshing sweet is replaced by something more grounded (I’m guessing it’s the vetiver). Yeah, Moth and Hummingbird both have it, but I think Bee has it in the highest concentration.
Moth and Hummingbird I don’t mind it so much, but Bee makes in unpleasant.
>>
>>18110684
i hate it as well. going back to my Chanel Allure Homme masterpiece
>>
>>18110665
I wonder if you should buy it then if I Colonia and Eau Sauvage are some of my favorite fragrances and I like Bohemian Lime as well. Some reviewers say it smells very synthetic, though.

Ahh, fruit candies in an ashtray…

why is it so good

Kek they sell the 200ml bottle in Japan for $125. It’s not that special and wasn’t even worth that price. Good luck getting $200 for 75ml
>>
I am wearing dior homo intense rn. I really like it. I dont get why it is hated and called gay. I dont feel like this would be a fags frag of choice to be honest. I just dont see it
>>
>>18110776
don’t worry about it, you’d have to be straight to understand.
>>
>>18110776
it's just a meme forced by a vocal minority ITT. with the state of modern men's perfumery, dior homme intense doesn't really stand out as overly feminine. maybe disliking powdery florals is more of a US thing too, considering that it was pulled from that market but seems to still be selling pretty well in Europe
>>

t. intensely homo
>>
>exit my 10 year depression
>start earning good money again
>remember /fa/‘s obsession with creed tabarome
>buy samples
>smells like tiger piss
Okay I have matured but some things did stick with me and I will never forgive you for making me believe you.
Aventus a shit too
Millesime imperial is just okay
My last hope is on virgin island water
I’ve learned my lesson so will just get advice from some bodybuilding forum here on out.
This is a warning.

this thread hasn't liked Creed in a long, long time
>>
>>18110816
>complains that brand is shit
>continues to buy said shit thinking “maybe this time it will be different”
perhaps this is what is known as mentally retarded behavior
>>
>>18110819
Doesn’t matter, lesson learned. Never trust /fa/.
>>
>>18110820
Retard, I bought a sample pack and they gave me 6 fragrances instead of the 3. Two of which were womens.
>>
>>18110822
>i bought a sample pack from creed and got scammed on top of the usual creed scam
behold, mentally retarded behavior
>>
>>18110776
>iris note reminiscent of makeup / hand cream. Add vanilla to the mix
>not gay
I'd dare to say that even pr ultrared man is a more masculine frag than dhi
>>
>>18110825
>t. I, the unscammable one not engaged in ANY current or former trends
Must feel good being the best of the best.

I am exclusively interested in pheromone colognes. is there a guide that I can use to guide my understanding?

Great reading comprehension. Refer to the first line in my first post. I don’t live 24/7 here like you.
