I managed to disassemble, clean and oil my vintage watch, apparently runs. Got some problems but eventually solved them. Bad news is that I only have 4h to sleep before work. I hope the watch is still alive tomorrow. Watchmaking is really fun, first time I spent so many time focused in one single thing.

>looks like a Milgauss which is by overall favorite watch except with a 3235
>no weird lighting seconds which makes it quirky
>no mercedes hands

I kinda wish the hands were a smidgen thicker and there was no cyclops but that's just one happy accident away from remedying.
>>
>>18108572
I bought a new grand seiko and immediately scratched it. Partly annoying partly liberating. Don't let your stuff own you.
>>
>>18108590
>Don't let your stuff own you

>>
>>18108555
>he fell for the 41mm meme
>>
>>18108591
sure, why own anything? just give all your money to others. there's some philosopher maybe peter singer I can't remember who says anyone with a non-subsistence income is morally obligated to do that, and there actually are some fringies who live that way (I don't mean the "effective altruism" types, those guys are mostly just psycho ancap libertarian types with a eugenicist leanings who want to conceal their abhorrent agenda in a veneer of respectability)

anyway yeah. don't buy stuff if it doesn't make you happy. I'm with you there. I like nice things though. maybe different nice things than the kind you like but I'm sure you've got your thing you're unapologetically into.
>>
>>18108555
It's too big for you. Should have bought the 36mm.
>>
>>18108594
Not him but why own a car to impress others. I buy something solely for the features and how it will help me in my daily tasks. How would a Mercedes help me over something like my Toyota RX450h? Both have ventilated seats to cool my ass while I'm in traffic, which is TBQH the only thing I truly care about. The driving itself in bumper to bumper traffic is nice as well.
>>
>>18108594
I mean, I feel happier now just driving a beater and having more money in my account doesn't hurt, but I don't think it's the most important factor. I think that being preoccupied with not damaging a car is unhealthy
>>
>>18108599
Same can be said about a watch tho, there is no logical use case for a rolex watch, when you can get a cheap radio controlled watch with perfect time
>>
>>18108598
The 36mm proportions look ugly, I don't like it. Also coming from a Pelagos 39 which is closer to 40mm I think the sweet spot for my wrist is 40mm.
>>
Yes or no? I'm 30 btw.
>>
>>18108603
The Rolex is more of an emotional purchase for me TBQH. It's just one of the checkbox I have to tick in life, now that it's over with I can move on. I mean it's probably not my last watch purchase because I did put myself back on the waitlist for a Rootbeer(as well as a Pepsi in case hell freezes over).
>>
>>18108599
I agree on that 100%. actually I don't like cars at all and don't have one. I get physically ill riding in them, I feel trapped. those /pol/ memes about urban s o y bugmen, that's basically me.

>>18108601
if I had to get a car the only thing I'd be interested in is the crash ratings.
>>
>>18108599
There is no such thing as a Toyota RX450h, why are you lying?
>>
>>18108610
It's something Lexus owners do to try to pre-emptively prevent people from laughing at them for spending that much money on a Toyota.
>>
>>18108611
>>18108610
Toyota locking the best features in its cars behind a premium price hike is bullshit. But I want both a reliable car that rides well that cools my ass. And I hate leasing which financially is not very futureproof.
>>
>>18108604
>The 36mm proportions look ugly, I don't like it.
It's the 41 that looks out of proportions and ugly. Rolex had to add these ugly numerals at the end of the indices and a thick ass bezel because the movement is too small for the case.
>Also coming from a Pelagos 39 which is closer to 40mm I think the sweet spot for my wrist is 40mm.
That's not how things work.
The Pelagos is a diver. Divers have to have bigger cases so you can manipulate the rotating bezel easily.
>>
>>18108614
Have you actually walked into a store and tried these on your wrist before you actually comment on something? Or do you just parrot everything your favorite youtube watch celebrity says? Again I went into an AD tried on several watches, it was between this the EXP1 and the OP41, I ended up with this.

Try going into an actual AD, see what looks good for you before commenting on what looks good on other people's wrists.
>>
Are leathers from aquatic animals like alligator and stingray more water resistant than other leathers? Is it safe to get them a little wet?
>>
>>18108619
>Are leathers from aquatic animals like alligator and stingray more water resistant than other leathers? Is it safe to get them a little wet?
No, but you can get leather straps that have been treated to be a little more water resistant
>>
>>18108604
If you're used to a 40mm or bigger eatch any smaller watch you wear will seem too small for like a week until you get used to wearing smaller watches.

I have a big wrist and believe it or not my first expensive watch was a big 46mm beast that was gifted to me. After that the first automatic watch i bought for myself was 38mm and I spent the first week wearing it going "holy shit, is this watch too small for me? Do I look like a bitch??" it took a while before I realized that watches over 42mm or so are just entirely too big and 36-38mm is perfect for anything without a twisty bezel. Not to mention the 36mm rolex oyster cases wear like a 38mm because of their big lugs.
>>
>>18108616
>Have you actually walked into a store and tried these on your wrist before you actually comment on something?
Yes, I own 2 Rolex. An early 2000s GMT Master II I bought from a second hand store and an Explorer 1 I bought from the AD.

You buying your DJ41 from the AD isn't proof it fits you btw. Watch boards are full of people wearing watches bought in store that are obviously too big for them. It happens all the time and it happened to you. Fortunately you bought a Rolex so you'll be able to sell it for good price in a few months when you'll finally realize it's too big for you.
>>
>>18108624
>Do I look like a bitch??" it took a while before I realized that watches over 42mm or so are just entirely too big and 36-38mm is perfect

>>
>>18108624

>>18108627
Who are you people to dictate what looks good and what doesn't? Why can't you guys just accept that other people have different preferences than you? Before the Pelagos I had a Tag 2000 and I HATED how small it was even when its a 38mm.

I also own a 36mm watch, my dad passed away a while and I took to wearing his old watch which is 36mm. It feels like women's watches on my wrist, but I still wear it on special occasions solely because it used to belong to my dad. I also don't wear it too much not just because it feels like a women's watch but I honestly don't want it to get stolen. It mostly just stays in the bank's safety deposit box until it needs servicing or I have some sort of dress event, but the time I wear it makes my wrist feel naked.

To be honest seiko & casio aren't elegant brands, maybe something like vintage baume & mercier?
>>
>>18108664
Sometimes they are legitimately built for and advertised for women. You have to try it on first hand to know the difference because simply going by diameter can be deceiving. For instance 36mm rolexes might look great on any man's wrist but the same man wearing one of the new 36mm Breitling Navitimers would look goofy. It's just too flat and dainty and frilly looking and the proportions are different. Even on the models without the gay diamonds you can just tell it's not made for men to wear it.

Just browse Chrono24 for 1950s-1970s watches from the major brands : Omega, IWC, JLC... You can easily find some cool dress watches in stainless steel or even solid gold around 2k.
Just make sure to avoid:
>private sellers
>anything gold plated
>anything that has been heavily polished
>anything that hasn't been serviced recently

Whats worse is that watch salespeople still guide normies to bigger models and people like >>18108631 believe in it and trust their guidance.

Last time I went to an AD they had a new woman trying to sell men's watches and she was openly resistant to the idea of even showing me watches under 40mm diameter. I pointed to and asked to see a 36mm watch in the case, I pointed it out twice and she still pulled out the 41mm version instead, and I just resigned to correct it a third time and just said whatever and tried on the bigger one. Then later I finally tried on a 36mm watch and she was going on and on about how men can't wear 36mm like they used to and they have to go for 40s and up now because that was what everyone is buying now, it's the style. I eventually just walked away from her, she was clearly either fucking retarded or just trying to offload oversized crap that's still there since the last 5 times I've visited them.

I won't even talk to female jewelry sales reps anymore. It's the biggest possible waste of your fucking time, the stores just hire the hottest bimbos with the biggest tits to model thousands of dollars worth of jewelry they know nothing about to sex starved middle aged men trying to stay out of the dog house. They don't know the products, their advice is trash, they don't listen to your questions or care about the answers you give to theirs. If you ask them what's popular right now or what people are buying at the moment they will ALWAYS. ALWAYS. Tell you "everybody's buying sets now. If you buy the diamond ring you have to get the matching diamond bracelet and necklace, if you buy the pearl necklace you have to get the matching pearl bracelet and earrings." They'll ask you what kind of jewelry your wife or girlfriend wears to see what they have that might match and then go on to just show you the most expensive thing they can show you regardless of what you said. If you're looking at watches they will recommend the biggest, gaudiest, most expensive chronograph in the store. Just protect your braincells and stay away from them, value your health and your time.

PREFACE: This poem, is a dream of a universe. A universe where only Jaeger-Lecoutre, Rolex, Patek, Vacheron Constantin, Breguet, and IWC exist. A holy realm, consisting only of the SACRED SIX.

THE SACRED SIX is a communion of the finest, best watches for all humankind. No lesser beings can acquire, or even dream of obtaining such watches. Watches like Seiko, Casio, Timex, and Orient are a completely foreign concept to THE SACRED SIX, and are heretical watches. The SACRED SIX will purge such disgusting heretical watches from the universe, and bring about a better time.

Walk with me, let's try to imagine a better world, a better life, with the SACRED SIX.

Begin Poetry:

In the realm where time is king, behold the Sacred Six,

Masters of horology, their craftsmanship we fix.

Jaeger Lecoutre, with precision, ticks each fleeting hour,

In its intricate dance, a testament to power.

Rolex, a legend, on adventurous wrists it gleams,

Through tempests and triumphs, it fulfills dreams.

Patek Philippe, a tale of heritage and grace,

A legacy of elegance, in every watch face.

Vacheron Constantin, whispers of refined taste,

Centuries of excellence, never to be displaced.

Breguet, with innovation, its legacy unfurls,

In each tick, echoes the genius of its pearls.

IWC, with engineering prowess, takes its stand,

Crafting timepieces that echo across the land.

The Sacred Six, guardians of time's fleeting flight,

In each intricate tick, they weave pure delight.

In their hands, time becomes a cherished art,

Boundless tales woven in each beating heart.

The Sacred Six, immortal in their horologic dance,

A symphony of time, in eternal romance.

There is a regular poster that everyone called dadwatch because he is a wristlet that wears a fake IWC Portuguiser that looks like a dinner plate on him. He bitched about the name because he is retarded and initially he thought people were saying he wears his dad's watch because they thought he couldn't afford his own watches and he couldn't believe posters had the audacity to associate him, a young successful financial advisor to wealthy old money European families, with poverty. Meanwhile he was posting the same fake IWC and VC Overseas constantly gloating how nobody could tell the difference and he was actually the smart one for only paying $500 for fakes and investing the difference in stocks and bonds. One day he posted a public restroom mirror selfie wearing a weird plastic looking almost reflective suit with sharp angles on the collars and pockets like he was in a sci fi movie. So someone made the association with Giggolo Joe. He winged that it was an expensive designer suit and even posted a scan of the receipt to prove he was legit and that people making fun of him are just poor or something. Suffice to say he was an attention seeking retard not unlike the ones we have now.

He still posts here, but unlike whoretadello and finfag it seems he actually has some sense of humility and knows when to quit. If you see someone randomly bringing up ROI and personal wealth and investing in the market instead of jewelry and being on pace to retire young it's almost certainly him.

I'm not talking about specialized watch boutiques like Bucherer or something, although even there you can run into these problems. I'm talking about the general jewelry store that is also a Rolex AD with some other watches in the back, or on the lower end they'll have some Hamilton and Tissot next to the usual Citizen and Movado horseshit. They almost always have some thots that have no idea what they're talking about but still get carried through sales by their looks. If they have older more clapped out women it's either because they're somehow involved with ownership of the store or because the store is that desperate for sales reps.

>The good
They drop in value immediately so you can find them at some good prices second-hand or grey market.
The 8 Days models are neat and keep on using a movement that's unique to Panerai : the Angelus movement. It's renamed into Panerai's naming convention but it's an evolution of the original Angelus clock movements. Even the revived Angelus brand doesn't use them. Oh and having 8 days of power reserve is nice.
Same with their linear power reserve indicator that uses a proprietary differencial. Nice feature.
Their 2000s and early 2010s models were spared a lot of the later downgrades and can be found for good prices. If they are beaten-up on the outside, then keep in mind that they are really easy to polish for any semi-competent watchmaker since they're all just mirror-polished surfaces except the Luminor crown guards that arr a basic brushed finish.
The ceramic and carbon cases are really good.

>>
>>18108784
>The bad
A lot of the more unique features and functions come and go out of production so depending on what limited editions are out there and what is and isn't in the current collections, you might not have any linear power reserve complications available all year, or only one model with 8 Days movements.
The movements have been on a constant downgrade wave since the late 2010s. No more hacking on a lot of them, no more decoration, a bunch of reliability issues on certain models (the Due have a lot of problems with power reserve and automatic winding because their casing circles start wiggling over time, shaking some screws loose that go on to block the rotation of the oscillating weight)
The value is terrible. Their entry-level is seriously overpriced and their current strategy of phasing out models and collections by doing limited runs of almost everything does not help.
The supply chain is always very tight so stores are likely not to have large inventory and may not ever get to obtain certain models that shouldn't be hard to get.
Everything about the Due. Holy shit that watch is BAD

I'm not sure what wrist size I have but I don't have the biggest arms but the dimensions fit me perfectly, but before I got this pic.rel was my everyday watch kek, it looks better on me in person. I am personally a massive fan of the hands, they are very iconic looking and have quite a masculine vibe in my opinion. Also it means the date window is readable even when the minute hand is covering it which I like. I'm not sure how it compares to a submariner I haven't checked them out in person although I already know I'd rather have the seamaster than the submariner, Rolex is a brand for sleazy businessmen trying to look richer than they are.

For those of you with screw pin bracelets, have your screws ever come loose? I've heard that you should add something like Loctite 222 to secure the screws but I don't know if that's legit or even necessary.
>>
>>18108845
Not really, it's design style is completely different and in no way a reference to the sub. Design-wise, I prefer the design of the seamaster with the wave dial that adds a fun touch, the date window at 6 o'clock, the skeletonized hands, the scalloped bezel, the helium escale valve which is a good conversation starter, the much more elegant bracelet design, the display back. I think this is a much better watch that is much more interesting. Not everyone is into Rolex you know. The only one I like is the skydweller.
>>
I figured that wrist circumference doesn't really tell you the full picture, I think wrist width is more telling.

So in my case the width of my wrist is about 61mm, what would be the max lug to lug dimensions of a watch for my size?
>>
>>18108849
It can happen on cheaper bracelets but on well-made bracelets it shouldn't ever happen.
You shouldn't have to put any thread locker on the screws but some companies do anyway, which is annoying.
>>
>>18108853
Both aren't competing with one another because they're not in the same price point. The 300 is competing more with the Pelagos.
>>
>>18108861
They aren't in the same price point and yet the seamaster is still a very worthy contender for the sub at a way lower price.
>>
>>18108858
Wrist circumference is more helpful in determining how thick of a watch you can pull off.

If your wrist is 61mm across, 50mm is probably the max lug-to-lug. You still want a little clearance top and bottom.
>>
>>18108849
It's not really a problem and if you're worried about it, just get some screwdrivers of the right sizes and tighten it yourself if it ever happens.
Main reason the brands put adhesive in these screws as well as casing screws or lug screws for watches that use this instead of lug springbars, is to make extra-sure that even if the watch gets tard-handled, screws will still stay in place and therefore no problems will have to be covered by warranty without water exposure (which is usually an excuse to cancel out warranties).
Downside is, if you get your bracelet resized by someone who doesn't heat it up in the first place (which loosens the threadlocker adhesive) or has weak screwdrivers, there is a good chance the heads of the screws will be damaged.
>>
>>18108864
my wrist is 7" in circumference and 61mm across, I don't remember why I measured in different units, but I did
>>
>>18108864
>50mm is probably the max lug-to-lug.

so in theory, I could just about pull off the longines conquest vhp 41 mm if I can get my hands on it

When it comes dive watches, the Submariner is the absolute and definitive standard. I get that people don't like Rolex for various reasons (I personally dislike pretty much everything made after the 1990s, with the exception of the new Explorer and OP), but you're fooling yourself if you think the Seamaster wasn't designed as a cheaper Submariner alternative.
The only divers that can't be consider Submariner copes are the ones that are more expensive, like the RO Offshore or the Fifty Fathoms.
>>
>>18108858
YOUR WRIST AND WATCHES ARE 3D OBJECTS.
A 2D MEASUREMENT IS NOT ENOUGH INFORMATION TO DETERMINE IF A WATCH CAN FIT YOU PROPERLY.

WHY CAN'T PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT SIMPLE FACT? IT'S BASIC GEOMETRY FOR FUCKS SAKE
>>
>>18108876
>The only divers that can't be consider Submariner copes are the ones that are more expensive, like the RO Offshore or the Fifty Fathoms.
I think you can also include dive watches that are obviously different from the Submariner and have their own design language, like the Doxa SUB300 or Panerai Submersible.
>>
>>18108875
To be honest from a spec vs spec standpoint the Pelagos is probably a better watch than the 300. I think I even liked it better with its non-protruding helium valve.
>>
>>18108887

Not to mention he is a selfish dickwad that will not think twice about doxing people if he gets a good wrist shot to post in the general. He said before he's reluctant to post pictures of her to protect her and their relationship but he already posted a censored photo of them together so I'm sure it's just a matter of time before he has her tits up here. He's a shameless narcissist piece of shit.

Build quality will be (way) better for a 5 digit than 4, and a bit better for a 6 digit vs 5. Pretty much all in the bracelet. The old the watch is the more likely the bracelet is worn out also.

Or you can stop being a menace who compromises people for your vanity

It's someone in his friend group in Germany he doxxed when he took a wrist shot of himself with the prostitute he took to the hookah lounge pretending she was his girlfriend.

There are 5 spy 9F's. They are marked with a gold star.

The VHP is not only a non jewelled, plastic enclosed movement but it's claims of 5spy have been widely debunked (see HAQ forums e.g WUS).

The citizen HAQs all look like shit imo. You're giving up aesthetics and finishing for a 5spy claim that most 9F's operate within anyway. Not to mention they cam be regulated if you so desire.
But even worst case like 10spy isn't accurate enough for all human uses, I mean please, get off the internet for a bit.

Lastly, the chronomasters operate more like a computer that 'knows' the time and moves the hands to display it (why it's able to be a perpetual calender) and many HAQ enthusiasts prefer the 'dumb quartz' type of autonomously accurate HAQs.

Either way, I think we can agree if a watch speaks to you visually, go for it.
Just please don't shit up these threads the way that shitizen fag does with avatarfagspamming every thread to oblivion.

Posting a picture of someone online is equivalent to doxxing now?

Only a narcissist would believe a prostitute is 'dating' them

What would you call posting someone's full uncensored face and where they were hanging out on the internet without their consent?

People have a misconception that wealthy people just spend money without worrying about it. The most frugal people I know have money. You don't get rich by wasting money. It's the fastest way to become poor, in fact.

Perhaps it was designed as an alternative. However, omega did a good enough job of trying to be different that they genuinely did create a good competitor to the sub with a very tidy design language that stands out as its own unique thing. Not everything is trying to be a submariner.

I've contemplated this. Why wouldn't people measure for their max lug to lug. The maximum somewhat flat surface on their wrist then share that when asking for recommendations? Can wear Xmm lug to lug plz recommend so on. Some folks have flatter wrists and others have sausage tubes.

Is there a Casio like the SGW-100 that's not as big. 42mm is pushing, so the 47mm would be overkill. I'm looking for something I can bring on vacation as a beater, that I won't feel bad if I lose.

G-Shock Square? The Not-a-Gshock Square?

you don't need to heat up watch bracelet loctite, it's basically dried cum, not industrial heavy machinery thread locker
doesn't matter if it's cheap or expensive, the screws could become loose, won't fall without warning though
afaik, rolex uses them, if you're getting your bracelet resized at AD, they should also use loctite on affected screws
I've had one screw go a bit out of the socket, but didn't completely fall out, afterwards I started using loctite for them and never had anything similar ever again

If you don't much buy into the Rolex hype and just want another watch and Rolex just so happens to be on the list, the mint green.

The pelagos was another option I thought about but when I tried it on it literally looks like a kids watch, the dial looks like it's made out of plastic and the embedded indices look shit. The pelagos literally is just trying to be a sub whilst being different enough. Spec wise I'd rather have a metas movement.
