For 8mm, would y'all recommend Prvi Partizan or Sellier Bellot? I've heard slightly better things about SB, but PP is seemingly a bit cheaper
>>61651874They're both pretty meh, plinking grade ammo.Brass is not great for reloading (Prvi brass used to be good but went to shit in the last decade for some reason).
>>61651874Just stock up on milsurp. Turk and """Greek"""" are fine in a bolt action. For semi auto, just use anything else like Yugo, Romanian, Czech, and so on.
>>61651969What's wrong with reloading Prvi? I've been saving their brass for reloading for a while.
>>61652013>8mm>milsurpHaven't seen anything in years except corrosive Romanian steel cased shit that is barely cheaper than S&B brass in bulk.>>61652038Soft brass, inconsistent necks, loose primer pockets pretty soon.
>>61652049Is there a brand more ideal for reloading then?
>>61652073Well ideally you'd buy Lapua or Norma brass but they're fucking expensive lol.Fortunately I accumulated a lot of Lapua brass during my DMR days because I sure as fuck wouldn't want to buy it with my own money.
>>61652080>but they're fucking expensive lolThere's no way to mitigate the massive money hemorrhage of a hobby this is huh.

>>61652049>Haven't seen anything in yearsRecently (and still up) ONE seller on GB listed over 7k rounds of various surplus 8mm. I'm guessing from a boomer estate. Surplus 8mm is EVERYWHERE online, for a decent price too. That is, unless, you're a leaf or Euro.

>>61650456>he doesnt collect everything from World of Gunsngmi
>>61653136>wearI wish this boomer meme would die. Your gun is never going to wear out in your lifetime.
>>61653504Its a fun game but theres several details wrong with alot of models
>>61651969Is there a decent, non-corrosive round out there?>>61652013I'm definitely getting surplus to stock up on, but I'd rather have non-corrosive for more everyday use. I've heard so many horror stories about not properly cleaning rifles after corrosive rounds that using surp rounds stresses me the hell out. I've used them, I've cleaned my rifle fine, but it still don't like shooting surplus ammo if I can help it
>>61654316Most of whats already been mentioned ITT is decent 8mm.When you say "every day use" do you mean hunting? or just plinking and funsies because PPU is perfectly fine or S&B. No need to get fancy unless youre up to fancy things in which case reload.
>>61654347Mostly just plinking for fun, maybe some hunting here or there. I usually hunt with more modern rifles, but I could see hunting with surp being fun
>>61653790Depends what it is and how much you shoot it. You'd be right if it's a bolt action you take out one day a year and put 20-30 rds down range with it.Some people use some of these guns for competition though, especially stuff like the K31s, Garands, 03A3s, etc. so high round counts are definitely more of a concern over a long period of time. Also semi autos have more parts that encounter wear/breakage. Same especially with pistols where you have to worry about the metal becoming brittle from the recoil over a span of 50+ years. P38s, especially post war are notorious for this if not properly fed/taken care of.All that said, the parts most likely to wear out are springs and extractors, probably long before you're going to shoot out a barrel, but it's still not unlikely to need to replace some of those parts over the course of 20-30 years.
>>61653790Even if a bore is at the point of wearing out, you can just buy a surplus or brand new barrel (for example, Walther Lothar makes them for K98's and Gewehr 98s to military contours) and have a smith install it, or god forbid buy some cheap tools and learn to DIY.
>>61643480Different anon, but coincidentally my local FFL did get a bunch of schmidt rubins in last month. I would be very disappointed to know it was them, but whatever, liability is liability. Should've provided them with the 6rd mags.
>>61646083So, a winchester model 70?
>>61653401eh? generally, if new factory ammo is available, who would want to shoot inconsistent grouping/corrosive surpluss shit? exept the flawless gp11 of course.8mm and most other old calibers if not too exotic are produced by ppu, s&b, geco fmj cheapo. and in every load/bullet combo imaginable for hunting by other manufacturers. esp. 8mm is a comon hunting round in middle europe.when doing private gun trades with austrian/geman boomers, surplus ammo often comes with it as a goodie, because its crap.i sell that crap immideatly. the lotta on top has a "Deutsches Reich" bounty stamp in the buttstock
>>61655486>>61646083or maybe a remington 700?
>>61654436Then literally what ever is cheapest
>>61655576It was cz 550 for me. Would've got the ruger if I knew it existed.
Cheaper options include the Chilean M1912-61 short rifles.
>>61654543Literally the only part I've had break/wear out on one my milsurps is the extractor on my M1917 which was a common thing to break even in 1917. Metal doesn't just become brittle over time with use, unless you can shoot at a sustained rate similar to that of a machine gun it doesn't get hot enough for significant change.
>>61655714>Literally the only part I've had break/wear out on one my milsurpsAnd have you lived a life time? Have you owned your milsurp for 50 years yet? Thus far in the 10 years I've been collecting, I've had to replace a STEN firing pin, a Luger firing pin, a Luger trigger spring, a Gew98 firing pin spring, an M1 carbine extractor, and an SVT-40 recoil spring. Granted, these were firearms with owners before me, but that's kind of the point. You can't guarantee the firearm has been maintained properly for the first 70+ years of its life before you owned it any more than you can ascertain how many rounds have been through it. Claiming that a milsurp will "never wear out in your lifetime" is too broad of a generalization considering most of what we're collecting is near 100 years old, never had any intention in its design to last longer than maybe 5-20 years in service, and my experience of parts wearing out conflicts with yours.

>>61664637I was toying with an idea anons, plz tell me if I'm retarded. Lots of people cast their own bullets, but what if an industry was built around home-shell production? Cartridge factories aren't THAT complicated- why not scale it down? Have a sheet of brass, cut out circle discs, and progressively put them through dies, till the proper shape is formed. Aside from finishing touches- that's all there is to it. Why can't someone have everything needed to do that in a garage? I imagine a hydraulic press/machine that takes about the same space as a car. Obviously you won't be cranking out thousands of cases an hour like a factory- but with an extremely rare cartridge (like 6mm Navy) it might be worth it. And obviously the whole setup wouldn't be "cheap" but it would practically pay for itself over time- especially if you got the FFL for ammo production and sold some to other desperate-for-rare-ammo anons.
>>61664881Just don't be a pedo and you will be fine
>>61664881>but with an extremely rare cartridge (like 6mm Navy) it might be worth it>6mm Lee Navy>>61662478
>>61664881I mean..sure? if you have the space, money and skill you can literally tool up to do all sorts of shit for any number of hobbies
>>61664881unnecessary as a whole. Even the most obscure calibers have existing parent cases or cases similar enough you can work on and are doable. Will it have varying degrees of difficulty involved? yes, but it wouldnt require a full fabrication set-up as you describe. So are you being retarded? only slightly. One could, with the space and skills scale down and have brass fabrication capabilities in their garage, But the types that do load obscure calibers requiring case work can do so still with tabletop tools
>>61664637Why stop there. Make your own gunpowder with your fireplace ash and frequently peed on straw in the backyard.

>>61643358I have found out about the existence of American Enfields that are chambered in an American round, .30-06. suddenly I want it. There are not a lot of them out on the internet. Prices are all over the place. I'm wondering a couple things:1, why do some listings say its capacity is 4 rounds, 5 rounds or 6? Isn't it really just 5?2, these Enfields were made by three companies, eddystone, Winchester and Remington. What are the differences and which one is best?3, how much should I pay for one?
WHY IS AN UNMOLESTED SPANISH FR8 IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND?
>>61669513M1917s are easy enough to find. Eddystones are the most plentiful.>>61669527Any Mauser in .308 gets raped hard by bubba.
>>61669485>I still haven't shot mine. :(((( I should want to like the mle 92's, since they have one of the best manual of arms of the euro revolvers, but I've never found an accurate load that works for them. Slow powder, fast powder, black powder; plated bullets, lead bullets, they all have garbage accuracy in the two mle 92's i owned>I want to, but I ain't putting that Fiocchi crap in my gun. So many have bulged barrels from that trash.Yes be very careful and bring a brass rod + hammer to the range, fiocchi squibbed for me too
>>61669513The capacity is 6. You load with 5 rounds in a stripper clip then can add one more.Eddystone are the most plentiful and depending on condition can go for usually 700-1k. Winchester and Remington you pay the fudd tax so theyll ask higher. There are no differences between a Win/Rem and Eddystone so unless you want specifically a Winchester or a Remington, buy an Eddy when you see one decently priced.
>>61669513You may want to watch C&Rsenal vids if you suddenly get interested in a gun. Some seethe at him for making guns more expensive, but he gives good info.
>>61669513>some listings say its capacity is 4 rounds, 5 rounds or 6?The magazine can hold 6 rounds, a quirk resulting from the rifle's previous incarnation as the .303-caliber Pattern 1914. The switch from the wide rimmed .303 cartridge to the narrower rimless .30-'06 left so much extra space in the magazine box that a sixth round could fit without issue. >What are the differences and which one is best?Remington & Eddystone-made rifles are very similar because they waited to begin production until the M1917 specifications for parts interchangeability were standardized. Winchester jumped the gun and began making rifles before standardization, which resulted in the pre-January 1918 Winchester rifles being kept Stateside during WW1 and never seeing combat. Even after Winchester was corrected their rifles have some minor differences in the shape of certain non-critical features. >how much should I pay for one?Depends on how "original" the rifle is. Many M1917s were disassembled. re-built and/or refurbished post-WW1 and parts were mixed and matched without concern as to keeping all the parts from each manufacturer together. Many rifles were also re-built during WW2. For most of the M1917's production bluing had been the standard finish for all metal parts, but Parkerizing became the standard metal finish on US rifles late in WW1 and when M1917s were re-built they were all Parkerized as well, so finding rifles retaining their original bluing is uncommon and those usually command a premium over rifles that are Parkerized. Generally speaking, the value of a M1917 goes up the closer it is to its original factory condition i.e. all the parts on the rifle are maker-marked to the same manufacturer, and the parts have the type of metal finish that would have been applied by the original manufacturer. Winchester also commands a premium over the other two because Boomers. Low end $600 for WW2 refurb, high end $1500 for WW1-correct non-refurb.
bump, today I'm meeting a guy to see his k31 that he is selling.
>>61669862>Remington & Eddystone-made rifles are very similar because they waited to begin production until the M1917It's because Eddystone was simply Remington's second facility.
>>61671763>It's because Eddystone was simply Remington's second facility. Both factories had been producing the P14 rifle for the British and those rifles’ parts were considered sufficiently different -and not interchangeable- for the Brits to identify them separately as Pattern 1914(r) and Pattern 1914(e) so spare parts from each factory could be supplied to the rifles manufactured by that factory. It was a huge fiasco and the Brits wasted millions of pounds on the P14.

>>61669603That's also because of the Pre-1898 receiver law. Great way to have a sportered Mauser in a common caliber shipped to your house if the seller isn't gay about it. Always found it funny that you can also have two Finn M39 Mosins sitting next to each other on a table, and because one of them has a tang date of 1891-1897, it's legally speaking not a gun.

>>61673433I'm well aware certain states like to defy federal law in the interest of being even more gay and restrictive. I grew up in New Jersey and suffered empty-handed while my cousins in pre-2012 Connecticut got a head start buying center fire antiques.

>>61643358>Grandpa's War Trophies EditionNot my grandpa's if anybody interested. I have a Mauser from a backwoods pawn shop. Owner said Korean war vet died and their boomer meth head kid said they were told it was a bring back from Korea. No papers to prove it so it was priced like a run of the mill Mauser for $300 during peak rona. No import markings. Serial range puts it as fn30 shipped to China. Stock has some weird ass cartouche carved into it.
>>61679991Papers don't add value IMO
>>61680007They're also often fake. A friend's wife once talked him out of buying a Luger at a show because she could tell the capture documents were mocked up in the 80s, she restores and sells old typewriters for fun.

>>61680236I'm using normal copper/brass brushes and patches

What's a good bid for a mismatched 08 9x19mm converted steyr 1912 if i just want a shooter?
How the hell are you supposed to install a 1903 front sight protectorI tried just pushing it down but I think I won’t be able to get it to snap into place without crushing the hood part
>>61683126Well, I owned a chromed finish 9mm converted one that I think I got for around ~$1000. I figured that was a great deal. Fun to shoot. Sadly I ended up selling it for like 250 bucks because I was desperate. This was years ago though. Nowadays, from what I've seen, a shooter steyr-hahn in 9mm would probably go for $1300-1900+ depending on condition/FOMO

>>61692021in my experience its a bit of this: There are ones who genuinely believe the shit behind their stuff because they most likely misinterpreted a thing 50 years ago and never bothered to check on it so they took it at face value and are too old/stubborn to see they were wrong.Others a being dumb and cant operate a smartphone well enough to check Wikipedia for 5 minutes to see they are wrong.Others are lead poisoned level of retarded but not in a way that's purposefully malicious. They just think it is, so it probably is the rest are for sure being intentionally misleading to get a little extra
>>61692116>most likely misinterpreted a thing 50 years agoThis is common with German combat awards. People forget that at the end of the war, kleiner Hans and Opa were hammering iron crosses and badges together from buckets of spare parts they found to trade with GIs for cigarettes, literal currency for destitute West Germans. Everyone who had the capability to do this, even big firms that made badges during the war, did so in the late 40s and made a black market killing.Fast forward 70+ years. Bob thinks his late father's bring-back medals were torn off surrendering or dead Germans' uniforms, or he knows the truth and just lies about it at shows like most boomerfags do anyway.

Though the Mother's Cross was a real thing back in that era, when my friend finally showed me the medal, it was not said Mother's Cross. I did some research on what his family had... It was a fake commemorative medal of Adolph Hitler (with the "ph" as Allied countries would use such spelling instead of the German "Adolf") made as a souvenir and sold in some gift shop on a West German military base in the 50s for post war soldiers to bring home and say "haha, I went to Hitler land!" When I told him, my friend had kind of an "oh" reaction like he didn't know what to think, and I don't think he told his dad. His dad probably knows it's fake.

>>61674092Finally back, there’s one gun from my grandfathers collection that has me scratching my head and I was wondering if anyone on here might know anything about the rifle. At first glance I thought it was one of two things, a Sears cutdown 1873 trap door or a shotgun convention of the trap door. The problem is that the cartouche on the stock reads 1886 and, there are no rear sights the front sight is a bead. The gun also came with a holster that reads Rock Island Arsenal. Any help is great and I would gladly appreciate it >>61677545damn straight he was, and thanks for the advice on the brass, any where I can get 56-50 rimfire at all? Or am I shit out of luck like with the burnside?
>>61699409it was destiny
>>61699580The wear on that gun looks pretty universal (stock likely not a replacement) and the 1886 cartouche would mean it started life as an 1884 trapdoor originally. I'm willing to bet it's a shotgun conversion because the rear sight was removed and that barrel only has a bead. Have you looked down the bore to see if it's smooth?
>>61699409What was the starting bid price?Only time that happened to me is when opening bid was already close to market
>>61699580>56-50 rimfireYour best bet would be getting a centerfire breech block and swapping em. Starline make centerfire brass or you can convert your own.https://www.buffaloarms.com/spencer-breech-block-sbb.html
>>61694467Yeah, definitely got lucky on the 24/47.Next J&G purchase was a "G-VG condition" Carcano carbine that was so beat up it barely stayed on paper at 25m and the shots that did hit paper keyholed half the time.
>>61699980>opening bid was already close to marketThat was pretty much the same scenario. It was an all matching K98k. Seller took like 70 photos of it and it even threw in a bayonet with a matching scabbard and a sling. Opening bid was just under $1900. It's not a bargain, but in a sea of boomers trying to sell SUPER RARE DOUBLE CODE NAZI MAUSER SNIPER for seven grand, I'm surprised it was overlooked.

>>61700573>mismatched handguardMY FILTHY SECRET EXPOSED. But thanks anon. I've done my homework, but there's still a lot of nuances to these rifles that I'm not totally familiar with yet, so it means something to me that you also thought it was nice. Best of luck finding your next one. There was actually a really slick 1939 Mauser Oberndorf on proxibid that sold last weekend, but I was too busy to keep an eye on it.

I'm hoping for a nice matching S/42 or S/237 to pop up for sale, the S codes are just extra cool to me though Imperial stuff has been catching my attention lately. Also, I'd highly recommend picking up a copy of Karabiner 98k by Karem and Steves if you fall down the rabbit hole of K98ks. Volume 2 covers the majority of the war years from 1939 to 1944.

>>61700736Gotta make sure it's safe sonny
>>61700748anon I dont think you understand what youve done by asking this question.
>>61700701Agreed x1,000. Karem and Steves got every autistic Gunboards member with a K98k collection to collab over a decade ago, producing the authoritative text on this rifle as a result. If you are serious about buying more, arm yourself with $250 (for the two middle volumes) of knowledge now that will save you tens of thousands down the road.
>>61700748>what does Kraut autism entailWe're talking about a country that put matching serial numbers on the tiny locking screws designed to hold the action screws in place. Now devote an entire collector field to a nation that OCD about weapons production. Doesn't get much more autistic than that.
>>61700701I bought volume 2 a few weeks ago, but still have a ton of reading to go through. Looking forward to digging deep into it.>>61700720Hand picked.>>61700748>How deep does it go?It's pretty abyssal. For starters if you want a matching rifle, the serial numbers were stamped on nearly every fucking part of the rifle (even the firing pin and certain screws). So if you wanted it to be 100% matching, and wanted to be sure about it, you'd at least need to know where to examine them. But it isn't enough to know where to find them because you also need to be able to tell if some decrepit boomer FAKED them. Since matching K98's fetch such a juicy premium, there are fudds who will buy stamps on the internet and try force matching bolts and other parts. Early war and late war parts are somewhat different and you need to tell if the rifle has the right "consistency" to it for its year of manufacture. So serial numbers aside, the rifles were made by various arsenals that each used different production codes, depending on the year of manufacture, that were stamped on the receivers (see chart). So let's say you're a mid-level autist and you want one of each. That's 30 rifles. Most of them are quite rare. Then there's all the fringe stuff like SS rune stamps and death heads, knowing how to tell if those are faked or not. K98's with scope mounts, but that didn't get scopes. K98's that DID get scopes. The 5 or 6 different kinds of scopes and scope mounts. There's probably a bunch of other crazy shit I don't even know about, but yeah, it's deep.
>>61700825>But it isn't enough to know where to find them because you also need to be able to tell if some decrepit boomer FAKED them. This is not really a thing in Eurofag gun collecting, why the hell is it so common there?
>>61700839This is mostly conjecture, but WW2 was basically Star Wars for the boomer generation and Nazi paraphernalia is like Funko Pops to them. There wasn't much serious historical knowledge about the historical artifacts they liked to collect back in the day, so I'd guess it became seriously lucrative for the more devious ones to fabricate junk and sell it as "super rare" Nazi artifacts. Naturally this would taint the milsurp market since of course people love collecting Lugers and Mausers. Stamp an SS rune on a piece and suddenly you can sell it for another thousand dollars and some gullible sap will definitely buy it. Thank the internet we finally have a reliable body of knowledge for identifying this trash.
>>61699409Do the penny auctions ever stay at a penny and someone wins a gun for 1 cent? What's the policy of sites like Gunbroker if the seller backs out because they don't want to sell a gun for dirt cheap on a no reserve auction?
>>61700839>why the hell is it so common there? This has strong ties to militaria collecting. Boomers who grew up hearing stories from their parents about their entire home country being destroyed tend to care about the history behind the war relics they buy. Compare this to "My father brought these kraut/jerry souvenirs home, now they're mine, buy my SS dagger for 10k firm."Continental European collectors I've met at shows have told me that Brits, Mutts, and Leafs are generally the greediest kikes to deal with in the militaria market. As a Kraut-Mutt myself, I agree with them. You also have the Poles, Czechs, and Ukrainians responsible for dumping ~70% of the fake German shit into the supply chain too. The overall lesson is, greed poisons a collector hobby and it's sad to watch.

>>61702758There's an og mp44 near me for sale for 4.5k€ but I already bought too much lately and I can't afford it. I really need a better job
>>61700748>How deep does it go?To expand on >>61700825's point, few rifles changed so much in such little time as the K98k did during its 12 years of service with Nazi Germany. Type 99s are in a similar boat but the fact that they're Nazi rifles puts a large premium plus the relative scarcity of 100% factory matching rifles leads to big money being thrown around and fakes follow where the money goes. Additionally, a super duper high functioning autist will never run out of variations to chase, especially when you get into the weeds of receivers transferred from one manufacturer to another (ar44 receivers completed by Mauser Oberndorf), legitimate depot reworked rifles, SS depot rifles (SSZA4, SSZA2) and ungodly rare codes/variants produced in limited numbers (there's 1 BSW 1936 known to exist in the world) plus all of the differing variants within the standard production (elm stocked byf 43s) makes them a collector/autist's dream. The only martial firearms collecting worse than K98ks are the Luger collectors as Lugers in German service went through 4 different versions of Germany, they were always valuable so fakes are even more common, and all the export models throw fuel to that fire of what you can collect. You can approach those levels of autism in some US firearms like M1 Garands, M1911s, Trapdoor Springfields, etc. but the allure and mystique of Nazi Germany and its firearms really make K98k collecting an expensive and daunting proposition.>>61700791This applies to most higher end collecting where the reference material will save you big time on getting burned on fakes.
>>61701045>Should I buy and flip it for $1200?Get fucked you dumb nigger.
>>61702947>This applies to most higher end collecting where the reference material will save you big time on getting burned on fakes. This is what the majority of BF1 zoomers and millenials will never realizeThey think watching a crsenal or fagotten weapons video is equal to reference material, and then end up overpaying massively. The most hilarious part is when they hop on the forums bragging about "look what i got for $$$ how did i do?" and then get torn apart for being retardedThe not so funny part is its retards like that who end up inflating the prices of bubba'd/mixmaster/refinished guns
>>61703747>"look what i got for $$$ how did i do?"People who get into this for the speculative investing/gambling kind of annoy me. Like dude, you consciously decided X amount of dollars was worth giving for a gun. If you have to ask other people "how you did", then you're admitting you didn't know what you were buying or if you even wanted it. Getting a "bargain" on a RTI rust-n-cum special isn't bragworthy if it isn't something you ever actually wanted to own until you opportunistically saw it and thought you were getting an epic deal. And the savings don't even matter because if you actually plan to shoot your collection, you're going to be bleeding green to get ammo anyway. Conversely, I would respect anyone who had a huge autistic boner for a specific item, did all their research, and consciously overpaid for it because they themselves decided it was worth that much to them.TLDR: Buy things you actually want, know about, and appreciate.
is this lugar holster fake and gay?
>>61701044So are you saying that Europeans care about militaria because it's history that affected them whereas Americans see it more as war trophies to circlejerk over who has the rarest/most valuable?I always did like the WW2 stuff because my family is French and came here to the States as a result of France getting fucked twice. My grandparents would tell me stories of the bombings and the hardships. I collect things that I feel are a part of that history.I will definitely say that of all the collector hobbies that I participate in, guns are the most rife with greed. It's absolutely rampant here in the US to the point that it's sickening.

>>61701808Because capitalistic greed ruins hobbies by attracting people who care more about the money than the hobby, and inevitably turn it into something only the rich can afford. Profit and investment is for stocks and Wall Street. A modest profit of $50 - $100 over what you paid for a gun at fair market value to keep up with inflation might be fine after some time of owning it, but it shouldn't be expected. "Flipping" for a 50%+ profit is a straight Jew move and shouldn't be considered welcome by anyone in any hobby. The need for profit is what sucks the fun out of all things in life. Bad enough to experience it in your job, but don't let it fuck up your hobbies too, especially while laughing about it.
>>61704130>Profit and investment is for stocks and Wall StreetNo. Unlike stocks and bonds, the milsurp market is an inefficient marking, meaning there's profit to be found if you can capitalize on inefficiencies. It's much easier to make money going to obscure auctions buying mislabelled / misidentified milsurps for cheap, and then bringing them to the larger market for $$. Can't do that with stocks/bonds unless you're willing to poor hours of research into a company's finance sheets, and even then you only get so far without inside information

>>61704009>So are you saying that Europeans care about militaria because it's history that affected them whereas Americans see it more as war trophies...It is not black and white, but as a matter of general cultural undertones in the hobby, yes. I have met greedmonger Eurofags and wholesome fellow Burgers in the hobby, and vice versa. When I visited antique shops in Florence and Vienna a few years ago, the old guys running them were just happy to meet a younger person who cared about history for real, one who reads books and isn't a tik-tok addicted item flipper. I spent the first 30 mins in each shop just talking about collecting and history with the old guys before conducting business. Got a couple of nice discounts by just listening to what they had to say, letting them bask in happy memories, and not being a pushy cunt. In my friend's experience in London and mine all over the eastern half of the US, it's much more of a "buy something or get the fuck out" mentality. It's usually subtle, but it's there because war relics are viewed more as a souvenirs and investment commodities. It wasn't always like this, it just got really bad in the past 20 years.I am a militaria collector (primarily kraut paperwork and photos) as much, if not slightly more than a surp gun buyer, so I experience the market dynamics from that angle as well. WW2 document collecting is quite fascinating because of how easy it is to connect the dots and reveal much of an individual soldier's service history.
>>61704012I can't remember if it was a certain Q&A video or not, but I wish that clip of Ian McCollum saying milsurp investing is stupid was something easily accessible to the masses.>>61704230>primarily kraut paperworkThere's a folder at my folks' place with my great grandfather's military promotion documents. One of them has Mr. H's signature. You might like that.
>>61704012I hate what happened to YouTube in the past decade so much it's unreal.
>ITT People hating on investorsYou will NEVER get gains this big in the stock market
>>61704269>but I wish that clip of Ian McCollum saying milsurp investing is stupid Lol which one? The older video when he said milsurp investing was stupid, or the more recent one after he sold out and said "please invest and enter my raffle and buy my bags"?
>>61704296I'm watching the top one out of curiosity. It's difficult to imagine the sort of person this information caters to. Because on the one hand you should be passionate enough about the hypothetical "investment collection" to do your research and find proper examples to acquire, but they also frame it like you should try to read the trends and deliberately choose something that will inevitably catch on. It's such a weird logic to me, like why would I put all this time and effort collecting stuff I like so I can flip it when it's hot? Just buy stocks ya fuckin dummy.>please invest and enter my raffleI'm glad I haven't seen him peddle that in a while. $50 raffle tickets are embarrassing. Even if you do get a "collectible mug".
>>61704206Numbnuts, not that it should be literally like stocks, but that most normal people don't enjoy literally everything they do revolving around making moneyOn /v/ recently there was a guy like you but for video games>wow what if we had a video game that you would have to treat like work to earn real money but it would also have a stock trading minigame also with real money, that would be the coolest thing ever
>>61701227>I don't see what's the problem?I don't have a problem with that, because you're using it and enjoying it. It's the guys who snatch stuff up and squirrel it away; not shooting it, showing it off or displaying it and barely even touching it (certainly not letting anyone else touch it) because that would lower the resale value. Their sole interest in the piece is its potential monetary value, not its history. The historical information contained within that particular firearm as to its production and usage is thus buried where no researcher can find it and record it to add to a comprehensive understanding of the history of a particular firearm design.>>61704278I really like that L1A1. Good wood.
>>61704615>Posts Enfields and based opinions at the same time.Never change, friend.
>>61701397I don't think they make that anymore.
>>61704615>The historical information contained within that particular firearm as to its production and usage is thus buried...Gunboards and other forums have, thankfully, coaxed a lot of people into sharing good quality photos of their surp, then adding the details of it to their extensive serial number studies, so everyone benefits from researching their particular guns. But I understand what you mean. Buyers whose knowledge base consists largely of half-truths and fuddlore, because they don't care to read history books or research outside the context of "How can I (((resell))) for 200%+ what I paid for this," get fucking annoying to interact with at shows.

How much research do y'all do at gunshows? I try to research beforehand, but I don't wanna look at a gun and then go sit in a corner on my phone for 20 minutes trying to learn all the details about this thing I just looked at
>>61705006My humble Finn contributions. 1915 Peter the Great M91 with SA stamp and the initials "PV" carved and wood-filled into the other side of the stock, pretty cool. An early 1944 Sako M39 that shoots very well. And three medals I found for $10 each because the seller didn't know what they were, but I recognized the language. M28/30 is high up on the "guns to buy" list.
>>61705062I put critical information about whatever gun I'm looking for onto powerpoint slides as quick cheat sheets and save them to my phone, primarily photos of markings, arsenal stamps, serial nr ranges etc. Makes for easy research because every gun show I've attended is hosted in a building with shit phone service.
>>61705062Why not? You either do the research there and decide with more information if it interests you. Otherwise you buy it and then research and then might not be as interested adterwards. The opinions of boomers sitting behind a table for 6hrs on a weekend dont matter

Scored high enough to get the commemorative medal for the 200 years of the Swiss shooting federation. Thank you K31
>>61705169can you share them?
>>61693160Sir I only play Verdun and Isonzo
>>61705062I only buy stuff that I'm comfortably informed about, which is usually fine because I like to learn about stuff I like. Maybe take notice of the guns you're interested in when you go, and then do research on them when you're at home. Over a period of time you'll eventually know your shit and won't have to google stuff. But if you find something you really like, why not drive over to a starb*cks or something to chill out and do a little research. Then go back in when you know everything you need to know.
>>61704615>I really like that L1A1. Good wood.Thank. It was a good snatch on eBay back when it wasn't cucked.Pistol grip is a bit munted, I need to get around to fixing it.I kinda sorta ruined her (picrel) but I really didn't know what to do with the surplus TA01 ACOG with a 7.62 BDC that I got as an absolute steal.
>>61705062>How much research do y'all do at gunshows?I walk in knowing exactly what I'm looking for. If I see something that's out of my normal area of interest but has piqued me for some reason it has to be very cheap for me to buy it, otherwise I'll just pass. Haven't bought a gun at a show in years; just parts and ammo. Last thing I bought was a Japanese Type-30 rear sight leaf with slider and an intact slider catch to replace the broken latch on mine's rear sight. Cost me $5 from a Boomer with toolboxes full of old milsurp parts. He didn't know or care what it was and I didn't enlighten him.>>61705340Well done.
