It'd be really funny if Gaiking turned out to not have a single episode based on Norse mythology, including SRW games and the 2005 reboot (key word being "if" because I'm only about halfway through).

All joking aside, it's a pretty good show.
Animation and choreography can be kinda sucky on average (I guess most of Toei's better animators/storyboarders were busy with Grendizer), but the characters and occasional expeditions to historical sites definitely make up for it.
It also has my favorite backstory to any weapons or equipment upgrade, namely the Daiku Maryu getting captured and the turncoat engineer using the occasion to commission a pair of drills.

Gaiking is an underrated gem, only held down by the Boss-clone cringe episodes

Are there any good homages to Boss? outside Geppy-X

Other than almost all 70s mech shows had a fat comedy character like Boss?

comic relief side characters in general during the era were usually a miss, very few shows did them right. look at the Combattler kids.
