I tried a few different things. They were just barely visible to the eye if you really stared at one spot. Had to use my phone camera to figure out where they were then point my actual camera at it. Didn't turn out well but considering the light pollution, the fuck ton of trees dead north of me, I'm happy with what I got.

If anything, long exposure is not what you should do. Or rather, not milky-way-long exposures. It also depends on how intense the Auroras are. 2.5-3sec should give nice Auroras. Maybe 5-6sec if they move slowly that night. More than that (10-15sec), and you just get a colorful blurry haze.

It depends on the storm activity. It is like photographing a billowing curtain where some areas are really active (directly overhead) and will look like a haze even with 2.5-3 seconds. In that situation only video does it justice and that's tough to do short of something like an A7S with a 1.4.

2-3 seconds is a good rule of thumb but worth playing around with shutter speeds if you are going to be out there a couple hours. Going to try .5 to 1s myself tonight and crank the iso on my micro four turds.

NTA but yeah, wider is typically better. Depends on your area and composition but 24mm and wider should have you covered. If you have a smartphone with night mode, that's pretty fun - honestly the only time I've enjoyed using the smartphone camera.

Was following this storm closely the day before, so I was able to set up slightly outside the city.
Ironically I went on a polar circle trip where I saw great northern lights only two months ago. Seeing them in the middle of europe made friday night even more special.

You basically did the exact opposite of what you're looking for in night pics/ astrophotopgraphy lol.

Use your widest apperture (or stop down 1-2 fullstops if you want maximum sharpness/ want a foreground in focus.

Your pics will probably be great if you just did that.

To the human eye, the colors were washed out. I get that seeing unusual colors in the sky is the attraction but all the super saturated photos look really unnatural to me. It wasn't a laser show in Vegas.
