What's the best rice cooker? Our 7 year old tiger cooker has scrapped coatings and I fear it
>>
I would not buy a brand name kitchen appliance on amazon. It's exactly the kind of thing that would be faked, and sold on amazon. Go to a real shop for that kind of stuff. Amazon is for stuff where it won't matter, like cleaning supplies, maid uniforms, charging cables, novelty colored raspberry pi enclosures, chokers, and thigh highs

Times I've been sold fake shit on Amazon

- Fake US Cellular Galaxy S10 (wrong carrier, phones IMEI had been altered to make it look like it was a USC phone)
- Fake Osprey Backpack
- Name brand garden composter

- Chinese HPFP internals instead of name brand I ordered

Some of them I sent back, some of them Amazon told me to fuck off because "iT wAs A tHiRd PaRtY sElLeR tHatS bEtWeEn YoU aNd ThEm" in which case I just charged back the payment.

>>

Normally, a pot will last at least five years even with sloppy handling.
However, this occurred in this rice cooker because it used a pot with high thermal efficiency and increased the amount of heat given to the pot.
However, this has now been improved.>>20434263

ENBU-DAKI also had a three-year warranty on the pot when it was first released, but the newly released version has a five-year warranty.

Incidentally, Hitachi has always had a six-year warranty on its pots and pans.

>>20434564
If you can't comfortably afford it then it's not worth it, the difference in taste/texture won't blow you away but it's a nice quality of life. Unless you cook a lot of short grain rice, then it's worth it. The main advantage to them in my opinion is their keep warm function works amazingly well.

How "wet" (actually, sticky) your rice is depends on the rice cultivar, not the rice cooker. It's mainly the amyloectin content. Different nations have different favourite cultivars and sometimes species of rice.

Admittedly I only use it once or twice a week so it probably wouldn't have made it so far with somebody who makes rice every day.

Just be aware that those models don't have the same features the new Japanese models do. They look the same, and they're priced high, but they're not the same.

They use some of the marketing images that LOOK like the "fire dance" rice modes used on the Japanese market models, but the US support when asked said the US units do not use that technology.

A bit scummy in my eyes, but the North American market has always been an after thought for Zoji.
>>
>>20439355
SHIIID :DDDD

Whats the differences? What's "fire dance" Rice mode and is it worth canceling that order for one of these japanese ones you're talking about?
>>
>>20429570
amazon encourages people to send them fake shit by mixing the stock from dozens of different sellers in their warehouses. almost everything on amazon is complete garbage.
>>
>>20439390
The japanese ones only have moonrunes on them, so you need to be artistic to read it.

The "fire dance" mode is basically they have a bunch of small induction heating zones that are powered on at some specific type of randomness to mimic the inconsistent heating you'd get from a real fire so that the rice cooker can try to replicate traditional iron pot rice cooked over a fire.

I have no idea if it's worth it or not as I'm not gonna drop $900 to import one.

So yeah, the new US ones are still newer by a generation than the other units, but they're just "regular" multi-zone induction heating with pressure cooking which puts them about a generation behind the current highest-end Japanese models.
>>
>>20431288
I don't like how japanese make rice, too much water, it's basically a rissoto. chinese have a better technique, the grain is perfectly cooked and not clumpy
>>
>>20439421
they eat different types of rice. you prefer long grain rice.
>>
>>20439415
The domestic JP ones are also 100V AC, I wouldn't want to have to dick around with having a transformer in my kitchen.
>>20439390
Just in case you aren't too familiar with what you're getting into, the 10 cup models typically have a 2 cup minimum for cooking. Might be a hassle if you're just cooking for yourself, but if you have use for that much rice every time you cook then it seems like a good deal, even if the fire dance thing is an upgrade (it realistically can't be THAT much of an upgrade imo, but nevertheless it sounds like an interesting concept).

>scrapped coatings

don't buy ricecooker or pot with non-stick coating. even when they don't wear/scrap off, they're cancerous. if you don't want shit to stick, just use some oil/ghee. and vinegar works too. for vinegar, you will still need to soak it some water for a few minutes for the dried up vinegar to work its acidic "magic" in unsticking rice and other burnt bits in a pot.

Toshiba is not recommended among high-end Japanese rice cookers.
Toshiba uses a method that removes as much air as possible to create a vacuum and increase pressure.
Moreover, the rice lasts longer because it is vacuumed while being kept warm.

However, after years of use, the vacuum function seems to deteriorate and air begins to enter.
If you live in Japan, you can have it replaced or repaired, but if you live overseas, it is not so easy.

No, that's way faster than most good rice cookers.

The whole point of a Japanese rice cooker is to cook it as slowly and gently as possible basically.

The highest-end japanese models without using a quick-cook rice is about 60-80 minutes.

Is it a cheap one? You're supposed to let it rest ~10 minutes without lifting the lid after it finishes cooking, at least for ideal results. Otherwise that's normal for a cheap cooker.

My grandma is 104 and she was using rice cookers until she got too old to cook. But she had a full time job that wasn't "stay at home tradwife" so that might be part of it
>>
>>20449581
My grandma died at 106. She worked as a seamstress in an actual sweatshop in Hoboken for people who don't speak English well IE Asian and Eastern European women. She would get picked up by a van in the early morning outside her place in Brooklyn and dropped off late at night.
And she still didn't use a rice cooker lmao.
My dad tried to get her to, especially after my grandpa died, but she refused.
I actually prefer how it comes out cooked the trad way and it's only slightly less convenient than the rice cooker.

Always thought it was a marketing gimmick as I used to have a cheap $30 rice cooker for the longest time, then when I started earning more I splurged on a $250 zojirushi and my god it comes out like restaurants. Really worth it.

Your unit doesn't even have IH, let alone pressure or multi-zone IH.
>>
I just saw this thread a minute ago and haven't read much of it, but it has made me think about getting a pressure cooker.
I like fried foods, but I don't like how they sometimes lack moisture (nobody likes dry fried chicken). Steaming is cool, but can take a long time. Boiling is... meh.
What is the best pressure cooker at the lowest price?
>>
>>20429372

need a rice cooker (female)
>>
>>20429372
I've lived in Japan for 11 years, married to a Japanese woman for 13. Never had a rice cooker. It's completely unnecessary, even with 3 children.
We use a pressure cooker pot. Cook 1-1.5kg of rice a day. Any left overs just throw in the fridge and microwave when you want it.
Absolutely no need for anyone to own a rice cooker. Just use any pot, it works the exact same.
>>
I can't believe this thread is still alive, did asians finally discover this board? Used to be that suggesting an asian exists IRL would be met with disbelief and snark

Good job admitting you're poor

You're also probably one of the only households on the block without a rice cooker.
>>
>>20457664
No idea what any of that means
>>20457709
No one in my wife's family uses a rice cooker, and none of my friends do. And I don't see the point in equating owning a rice cooker to level of income when anyone can buy some chinese garbage rice cooker for 3,500 yen on Amazon
>>
>>20441675
This happens to all pressure cookers that use a vacuum. In the vast majority of cases it's simply a matter of replacing a silicone valve for $5 or less. I literally have a 35 year old pressure cooker from my mother in law on the stove right now.
>>
>>20457728
>now i'm lying

lol

lmao even

Over 95% of Japanese households own a rice cooker you fucking retard, pretend all you want no one you know has one, but you're just lying and we all know it.

>>20457633
See >>20443263 and tell me you've never spent any money on a QOL improvement
>>
>>20457783
I don't see the point of your reply. Everyone in my family is perfectly satisfied with the pressure cooker. A rice cooker does not save me any time or effort in any way, since I have to do the same exact process to make rice regardless and takes up a permanent place on my counter. There is no "need" here, it is simply a wasted purchase.
>>20457778
I am providing one anecdotal experience. I don't care if you think I am lying or not. Please let me know what benefit I have to lie and persuade you not to purchase a rice cooker.
>>
>>20457794
I'm glad you enjoy your pressure cooker, but I and many other people don't own one or plan on ever using one. In this case, a rice cooker would be the better investment as it demonstrably cooks rice better.
You may find there to be no need for a rice cooker, but your situation does not apply to same to every situation imaginable.
>>
>>20457794
Because you're a LARPing NEET who needs to waste his time somehow, and today, pretending your Japanese family and friends don't own rice cookers is apparently the fantasy you've chosen.

Out of stock, I'm not that retarded anon you're embarrassing me come on...
>>
>>20457910
>perfectly
nope, im sure it's fine, but it's not perfect, it's basically impossible to get perfect rice on the stovetop from a regular pot since the top of the pot will be colder than the bottom, some of the rice will be more cooked and some less cooked.

A rice cooker gives you much more consistent doneness throughout the entire batch of rice, from a single serving up to 10+.

How do expensive rice cookers do it when rice seems to come out slightly sweet? Always assumed this was a seasoning thing until I saw someone just filling it with rice out the pack
>>
>>20461251
Used to do it all the time. Use a Pyrex container and assume the water will boil over so be prepared to use a sponge to clean out the starchy water
>>
>>20461837
Japanese rice cookers cook rice slowly at low temp which allows sugars to develop in the rice.
>>
>>20434263
what tech do these have that warrants such a price tag
>>
>>20434564
I'm pretty happy with my $20 rice cooker. Still beats the stove.
>>
>>20461844
How long you're supposed to cook in microwave?
>>
>>20429372
just get a 6qt instant pot, 4-6 minutes of high pressure and it's done + stainless instead of teflon. there is almost no reason to buy anything but a datung or an instant pot
>>
>>20462507
multiple IH heating elements controlled by computer to mimic the kind of heat a fire would have on a traditional iron pot of rice. It also can change the internal pressure and adjust the cook time/heat for that particular batch.

Most people don't care, but if you're japanese and eat rice every single day it makes a bit more sense to care.

>>
>>20449454
The taste of rice is about 70% due to the quality of the rice and 30% due to the way it is cooked.
However, depending on how the rice is cooked, premium rice can be spoiled.
