genuine thoughts on them?
>>4799053Cool animals. Everyone agrees. I want a few as pets but don’t know how feasible it is

Requesting Velvet Worm webms that aren't this one, if such a thing exists
>>4799053My ancestor :)

>>4799111You'd probably need to provide a very large vivarium relative to their size to fully encourage their hunting behavior and let them feel like they have actual territory.
I've never heard of these cum bugs before. Where do they live? I'll keep an eye out for them.
>The brains of Onychophora, though small, are very complex; consequently, the organisms are capable of rather sophisticated social interactions.>The Euperipatoides form social groups of up to fifteen individuals, usually closely related, which will typically live and hunt together. Groups usually live together; in drier regions an example of a shared home would be the moist interior of a rotting log. Group members are extremely aggressive towards individuals from other logs.>When assessing other individuals, individuals often measure one another up by running their antennae down the length of the other individual. Once hierarchy has been established, pairs of individuals will often cluster together to form an "aggregate"; this is fastest in male-female pairings, followed by pairs of females, then pairs of males.>Social hierarchy is established by a number of interactions: Higher-ranking individuals will chase and bite their subordinates while the latter are trying to crawl on top of them. Juveniles never engage in aggressive behaviour, but climb on top of adults, which tolerate their presence on their backs.
>>4801582>Where do they live?In the forests and caves of the southern hemisphere, mostly Central and South America and Australia/NZ
>>4801582They’re notoriously elusive so just keeping an eye out sadly isn’t enough
>>4801394I could definitely provide the materials for one but I don’t know how to put it together myself sadly so it’s a distant dream for now
>>4801750There are quite a few guides you can find for terrarium builds, you may be surprised.
>>4801759Yeah the problem is finding the time/motivation. I’ll get around to giving it a shot someday, hopefully
they cute
>>4802870>>4802873they really are just gummy worms…
>>4802870The rightmost guy is just sinking his claws into his friend's back, ouch
:D
>>4799053very interesting evolutionary historyfeels like the closest thing to a complex cambrian animal that's still around to this daycooler than sponges and cnidarians
>>4805215I thought they were more closely related to hallucigenia than they are to radiodonts? Tardigrades are what you're looking for since opabinia is thought to be decently closely related to them.
>>4805218yeah they are more closely related to lobopods but they probably still share lots of similarities with other animals of the time because they seem to have retained a lot of features of the common ancestor of all panarthropodsjust posted the pic bc it was cool
>>4801591>social wormsI love them.
>>4804943Wow, he's cute
>>4799053i dislike the fact that it's an entire fucking phylum of the same worm
>>4807444There are phylums consisting entirely of one species and your beef is with velvet worms?
>>4805734
This is the best one
>>4799929Are you a bug?
I want to eat them so bad
>>4808271Are these bugs? I'm saving them in my bug folder regardless.
>>4799053Its amazing to me some are 'placental'
>>4808364They're their own thing, but are related to and share a common ancestor with arthorpods and tardigrades, so I guess it depends on your definition of bug
>>4808190That does look pretty cool…>>4808280They do look like gummy worms…
>>4808280>t.micrurus hemprichii, the snake specialized in almost exclusively eating velvet worms
>>4810169it craves the gummy vitamins
>>4810169Imagine specializing in eating a scarce food source. Must be like eating the best steaks money can buy for breakfast lunch and dinner
>>4810389But if you ate it for every meal wouldn't you get tired of it and it would feel like a chore to eat?
>>4810579such is the existence of the specialized animal…
