I predict that Rally House and the Y2K art style will finally replace retrowave. Neon horizons and Deloreans are out, Wipeout and Celica GT4s are in.

The whole 80s thing has been a dead horse for years - even FH1 had a kinda retrowave track called 'Spirit of the Night' and that was 12 years ago

is there some special flag or index on the Mission car's livery between the windows (which looks pale pink in this one)?
it tends to be different colors in different places, eg. khaki or black during a race. my head-canon is that it's a reflective paint, ie. silver

Figured out the track backs. They're not indexes into track chunks, they're texture indexes. So all walls with texture X get back Y if the apply back texture checkbox is checked.

I've been doing transparency wrong. Transparency takes over the texture index when no texture is applied and there are only five valid values. It doesn't just give a set alpha percentage to a color indexed into the palette. No more green loops and windows soon.

When I was a kid, I had tons of fun playing Cruisin' World/USA/etc at the arcade -- however, after having driven real cars (not on tracks) and having felt the g-forces, is it still possible to have fun with racing setups?
There are no more arcades around for me to try.

I'm think about getting a PS5, PSVR2, T-GT2, TH8A, and Gran Turismo 7, but this alone will be around $2100 plus tax. Basically blowing through a whole month's disposable income, which doesn't feel too great when I could be investing.

Should I just go for it? I'm more interested in virtually pushing shitboxes to their limits than driving true race cars.
What racing cockpit would you recommend?

nah it's more like cru1/postpatch cru 2 drift spec but with thrust vectoring goku nitrous. the cars are really slippery and you have to initiate properly, but there is a bit of countersteering assistance. it's not as vague, slippery and unpredictable as prepatch cru 2, it's not quite as snappy as ug2, it's very arcadey in that you can just rip 10 mile long full throttle 200 mph full oppo slides with ease, but one thing it doesn't feel like is gta. the cars have a much better feeling of mass and inertia and of course aren't cucked to 80mph like gta either

weirdly they fucked up steering wheel support and the drift assist actually prevents you from countersteering above a certain speed. a shame because the ffb is really good.

i disagree the physics are perfect and quite realistic for an arcade racer. its fun and easily controllable but there is a significant technical depth to driving. there is clearly a simulation running underneath. camber and ride height set in the stance menu actually affects the way cars handle, it's very apparent now with the new physics.
the frostbite nfs games feel a lot like drift city which is fun as fuck, now with the addition of realistic drift physics to the anime driving model there is a lot of choice as to how you build your vehicle.

let's be real: if this was a game by a japanese developer and not literally satan the game company everyone would be cooming over it like they do for txr and nobody would care about the "physics"

No. They look like garbage and I don't care who made it. I hate the Ridge Racer games despite them being Japanese. Midnight Club LA perfected arcade racer physics. My favourite arcade racer is the Motorstorm series (hate the rubber and AI, though)

The latter-day NFS games make the cars look like they have no suspension, they turn from the centre of the car, and they have god awful 'brake drift' physics like a Mario Kart game. They glide over the road like animated bricks, yet they have the brazenity to include off road racing in the games? Absurd.

>Midnight Club LA perfected arcade racer physics
midnight club is just midtown madness which is exactly this:
>the cars look like they have no suspension, they turn from the centre of the car, and they have god awful 'brake drift' physics like a Mario Kart game

nfs unbound actually added the option to turn the brake-drift system completely off, which i did on the cars i tested out with the new tires. what you are seeing in my webms is actual oversteer simulated by whatever mangled corpse of rfactor is under the game.

>They glide over the road like animated bricks,
is that not what arcade car physics is? it would be gay if you bottomed out on every ramp or curb or got your splitter caught on shit and stopped dead like a bad MM mod. they actually had to adjust all the cars' suspension dampers last patch because noobs were complaining they were TOO lively over curbs and bumps.

>yet they have the brazenity to include off road racing in the games? Absurd.

i don't think that's even a word but how is it brazen to include off road racing in an open world racing game where you can literally just drive off the road whenever you want?

>I said TXR
You were using them as an example of a supposedly shit arcade racer that people put on a pedestal simply because the devs were Japanese. The subtle implication being that you think I'm saying NFS sucks is because it isn't Japanese. I was proving your assertation wrong by showing that by and large I prefer Western arcade racers to Japanese.

>MC has no suspension and is brake to drift
It isn't. Maybe MC1/2 are, but not Los Angeles (the one I explicitly name dropped as having the best physics). And LA absolutely gives cars suspension, I know because I used to autistically RP off roading in the Range Rovers by jacking the ride height up and testing the suspension articulation. The recent NFS games have none, not even in the 4x4s like the Ford Raptor. The way drifting works in LA is the cars progressively lose traction as you push hard through a corner, a simplified version of what happens in real life. The cars can understeer and oversteer depending on suspension load, and you can even push too hard coming out of a corner and fishtail/spin. By contrast in the NFS games, the cars grip until you press a 'drift button' that switches to drift physics, and continues to hold these clunky drift physics until manually deactivated. It's a step above hop drifting in MK.

>what's wrong with having off road in them
Because their physics engine absolutely is not designed for off road. Which is why you can watch clips of people taking Raptors and off-road tuned Baja bugs off the road and they rattle and bang around like you're driving a supercar off road. Because they have no suspension travel. They move like bricks.

ok well that is now the new "pro drift" tires added in the latest nfs unbound patch actually work.

> By contrast in the NFS games, the cars grip until you press a 'drift button' that switches to drift physics, and continues to hold these clunky drift physics until manually deactivated.
that is actually not true at all. while there is a "yaw push" that happens to help the car rotate if you enable that function, it doesn't "switch" to "drift physics", it drifts like a real car in that the rear tires slide, the front end countersteers, and the spinning rear wheels pushes the car around the corner with the vehicle's engine power alone. there's isn't an "rail" like in some ridge racers nor is there an "end" to your drift. it stops only when you pull the nose back in line with the steering or use nitro
>>
>>27685507
>auto countersteer
>drift automatically ends when you steer or use nitro
That puts it at a higher level of arcade-y than MCLA. In LA you have to manually countersteer and if you don't get the angle right you can and will snap around. It's a lot more forgiving than a proper sim, but it's still there. Using nitro whilst drifting in LA is practically a guaranteed spin because it puts way too much power through the rear wheels. Needless to say, FF cars can't drift in LA. The physics in LA are about halfway between GTA 4 and GTA 5.

that's how it works in the crew 2 and with unbound pro drift, but at shallower angles you can hold it and use the momentum to transit into a bigger slide in the next corner
irl drift cars do use nitro and they don't spin out so it seems like a skill issue on angel studios' part

>That puts it at a higher level of arcade-y than MCLA.
so NFS Unbound is official MORE FUN than MCLA. Glad we could come to an agreement on something I wasn't even planning to argue.

Just realised Volvo has the same parent company as Lotus in current day, hope once again rises, that’s two cars we know that are finished straight away if the license is aquired (Exige and Elise both appeared in the Sport Beta before being cut)

They keep adding the prefix of free to the updates as well, preparing for a paid update perhaps? We know Lotus historic has it’s own fee for it’s cars, would definitely pay for a few lotus race/formula cars and a 3 or so tracks like those GT5/6 dlcs…

Would cover FIA fees for tracks like Silverstone and Montreal too. Not to mention the PS3 dlc’s were quite reasonably priced.

I just hope the next few updates focus on tracks, as the game has more than enough cars now, a sentiment shared by much of the fan base
>>
>>27689217

Super light cars and grooved tires really allowed for some cracked driving styles, I’d say that era of cars had the same versatility you see in fast bike racers
>>
>>27689217
Alonso's intentionally inducing understeer to make the front tires slide and heat up so they regain more grip is a better example desu, that comparison is just left foot braking
>>
>>27688600

Dude, if you are 1-2 seconds off consistently that’s way better than 50th percentile, I’d say closer to 10 or even 5 percent, unless you are talking ovals and the fastest circuit cars.

Most that are faster than that drive the same car/circuit combos many hours before a race.

The thing that connects most top racers is the absurd amount of practice they do.

Everything they've scanned since 2013 for FM5 has been spot on. The issue is their 360-era cars were mostly spitballed from photographs.
Sometime in 2016 or 2017 they got access to the Nissan museum in Japan and laser scanned about a dozen of their cars, which is why Forza got a big chunk of random obscure Nissans in a short period of time (80s Patrol, 60s Prince racing car, et al). A real crying shame they didn't replace the ancient inaccurate models, though. The museum has basically all of the older Nissans that Forza should redo like the Skyline GT-Rs and Silvias.
>>
>>27698703
they are redoing some of them. they've been closing threads on inaccurate car models with the reason being they know and plan to fix them
>>
>>27698746
They said in 2013 that they rescanned all their old models, which was a blatant lie. In 2017 they bragged about rescanning old models and showed off the new 22B Impreza as proof, the 22B was the only one they redid. They said for Forza 8 they rescanned all the outdated cars, blatantly lying again.

They're closing the threads as damage control. they know the cars look like shit, yes, but they have no intention of doing anything about it.
