My experience with HO when I was getting in was that it was all boomer rivet counters, and the guys that did N were a lot more laid back.

My favorite class is probably the Class 42 Warships, although I have a soft spot for the 35s, 14s, 09s, 07s, 04s, 66s, and 28s for pretty obvious reasons. My favorite steam classes are probably the 57xx, 14xx, USA, LBSCR K, Black 5, Ivatt 2mt, and Hunslet Austerity tank

HO, because there was barely any French rolling stock and buildings available back when I started the hobby in the early 2000s, and it was a Christmas gift that started it all (a Jouef starter kit).
There's more choice today in N (and it's a more sensible choice in my opinion, for a more realistic layout in a smaller space, it's also less costly in general), but it was not before the 2010s I think that manufacturers really started releasing models in N (and not repainted German models). Still way less choice than HO today, and a huge used market for HO too.

I think it's in a good place right now. Quality N scale models are now cheaper than equivalent quality HO models, and selection is getting a lot better. I'd kill for more new steam engines (like a new N-scale Dreyfuss Hudson), but since I mostly model PRR in steam I at least have a better selection than most to work with.

That's interesting, I agree that N has certainly had some positive development in recent years. It's interesting you mention the realism aspect, as that was one of the things that brought me to the scale originally. Just wish I still had the dexterity for it, 00 is far easier for me

PLEASE give me a new Dryfuss Hudson. I don't want to spend the over 200$ asking price on a Con-Cor that's almost as old as I am and has all the detailing of a wooden Thomas engine. Or a Mohawk or Niagara.

Scale: H0m
Reason: japanese trains with two conditions:
>narrow gauge is actually narrow
>the scale is consistent
This leaves me with OJ, H0m, TTm and Zm. I can;t get the Zm tracks right, OJ is super expensive, takes a lot of space, is incompatible with 0m and 0 scale isn't consistent on its own (1:43,5 vs 1:45 vs 1:48). There's barely any japanese TTm. H0m isn;t a good choice, it's the least bad one.

KuMoYa145 motor car, and it's a homemade conversion from J scale. My layout isn't operational yet, so I'm not buying any motive power for now.

I should be moving into a new place by the end of the year. I plan on running a mid 1940's Southern themed railroad with associated railroads. For example the Southern Crescent was actually handled by Pennsy GG1s out of NYC Penn Station and was handed of to Norfolk & Western J or K2a Class locomotives over their trackage before transitioning to Southern motive power south of Washington DC.

It's fun playing with three rail O, especially the postwar style stuff. Prototypical accuracy is already out the window, so you can play around with things a bit. Definitely not for a rivet counting layout, though.

HO because it has the most available for it and reasonably affordable plus I like steam. The steam selection out there is great in HO vs. the other scales minus O which is neck and neck with. BLI and to a lesser degree Bachmann are releasing new steam all the time and ScaleTrains after 3 years is finally releasing ex-MTH HO engines with better DCC boards.

So far I just have a Kato double tracked oval with some industry turnouts on a door. Still trying to design a layout that can look somewhat believable when I do operations, but also allow me to just let stuff run. It's eventually going to be themed to the Southern Pacific in the 80s vaguely in Southern California

Yeah there's far more steam options available for Britain in that scale. Graham Farish is a particular favourite brand of mine but there's lots of choice.

To add to what he said, for Z, there is Märklin for steam, but that is almost entirely for German subjects. AZL has some too.

Too much to name. So many locos existed in reality it would take 100's of years to make them all outside of the brass already made plus many come from forgotten, unpopular Class 1 railroads that the mainline model manufacturers won't touch because they won't sell. But if you had to twist my arm I would say more steam options from the Baltimore and Ohio, Southern (USA) Railroad, and Western Maryland. Would really like to see a Western Maryland I-2 Decapod outside of brass.
