Anon, what is essential to know if you want to travel to Malta?
>>
>>2658856
Idk I went without much info. Went to Valletta and ended up going to a beach nude with two girls from my hostel

you can find some really good deals for flights and hotels from travel agencies

you can get a 7 day unlimited bus card for €21. just know that the roads are congested as fuck, the buses often wont show up close to the scheduled time if at all, and it takes an hour to get anywhere on them. can be a bit dodgy relying on them so don't plan a tight scheduled day around them

half the population seems to be indian now

best neolithic sites are ggantija (gozo) and hagar qim+mnajdra (2 in 1 site). you can get a 30 day pass for all of the main historic sites and museums for €60 which is quite steep but if you plan to go to a lot of them it will probably work out (hypogeum is excluded from the pass)
>>
>>2658859
Btw it didn't happen
(I'm trans if that matters)
>>
>>2658856
every car is a taxi if you ask, it it the local custom to accept a person asking for a lift in your direction.
they have cool ancient temples which are 7000 years old and point to the stars.
don't eat the shrimps and prawns on offer.

Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni in Malta is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and its construction dates back to 3600 BC.

why would it matter?
>>
>>2659063
You are not a trans but a bald scumbag.
>>
>>2659091
not worth the €35 unless you're really into that part of history. you're shepherded through the few cramped rooms with a dozen other people all listening to the audio guide. they make sure your phone, bags, anything else is put in a locker so you cant take any photos
>>
Fookin' luv Malta, me.

DO:
- Do go for early morning walks to the bakery. There will be one within 20 minutes of wherever you're staying. The food on offer is cheap and delicious and eating a hot pastry under the midday sun is a miserable experience
- Do go off the beaten track. Get the bus to Marfa Bay and go over to Gozo. It's much more chill and greener than Malta (the main island)
- Do plan ahead and rely largely on taxis or ride-sharing. The buses go everywhere but they're unreliable and you don't want to be waiting around in 40C/100F heat in the hope that it'll show
- Do check out the war museum if you're into US/UK military history, the Order of St John / Crusades, or Mediterranean conflicts. It's at the tip of the Valletta peninsula so it's a good excuse to walk through the entire old town

DON'T:
- Don't bother with the beaches. They're always crowded with tourists and are poorly maintained. If you want to swim, get a hotel with a pool
- Don't avoid the bigger cities. Valletta and Rabat-Mdina are more heavily trafficked but they're beautifully historic, clean, and the locals are somehow still not worn out from the influx of tourism
- Don't go to the tourist restaurants. There's a lot on the waterfront in Sliema and further up in St Julian's and St Paul's that caters solely to overweight British tourists. The food is typically good and cheap but the clientele leaves much to be desired
>>
>>2658856
If you do want to go to the Hypogeum, be sure to book as far in advance as you can—they only let in a limited number of people at a time, and it can sell out. We were there over the Easter holidays and it was booked solid for a couple of weeks, so we couldn’t go. Presumably easier when it’s not a holiday.
>>
>>2659108
>they make sure your phone, bags, anything else is put in a locker so you cant take any photos
They force you to buy some souvenirs; I want to know what these souvenirs will be like.
>>
>>2659140
They didnt (was there in jan), it was just a rly lame 30min tour where you dont see much while standing with loads of ppl all around you for several mins at a time listening to the audio guides, then you get a 20sec look before being shooed on to the next thing. Just go to the others at your own pace, all the auido guides are 95% the same/overlap anyway
>>
>>2659141
Then, I can decide to visit the place without listening to the audio guides?
>>
>>2659164
sure but you can also just look at a pile of rocks almost anywhere in the world if you want to
>>
>>2659141
I liked the Hypogeum, had an interesting atmosphere and some of the facades in there were really clearly defined and well preserved. Better than Ggantija which really is just a pile of rocks even if it is the oldest of the bunch.
That said, Hagar Qim + Mnajdra is the best megalithic site on the island. Really nice setting too.

-Get the Tallinja card (see: >>2658869).

-If lost or not sure where to go, you can get basically anywhere from the bus station at Malta, and likewise all roads lead there. Worth mentioning in my own experience that buses were good, though I can easily see how others might have less ideal experiences.

-There's lots of stray cats, they're cute but don't be that guy that feeds them and causes a literal cat-fight.

-There's a big food hall in Valletta, and a nice Pinoy street food joint there, if you like that kinda thing, try it!

-Likewise try Storie e sapori if you want really good pizza - though tbf most places have great food regardless and there's a large Sicialian diaspora so it is a great place for Italian food in general. I never tried Maltese cuisine due to the tourist-trap nature that most 'Maltese' restaurants seem to thrive on though I'm sure there are good ones out there.

-If you like churches, go to the Rotunda at Mosta.

-If you like swimming, try Comino island.

-South of the island is nice, but if you're on a tight schedule not worth spending time on. Marsaxschlock isn't anything special imo, though the cruises from it might be decent.

-Never went to the Hypogeum but the Tarxien temples are easy to get to, are available and are cheap. I didn't think tonnes to it though the site was kinda cool, but then I don't think tonnes to old ruins in general - a nice backdrop but as in a gallery its like 'eh, this is nice... *walks through, abruptly stopping and pretending to pay attention to things in case some cute girl passes by and thinks I'm smart for doing so*'.

>-Get the Tallinja card (see: >>2658869).
Is this the bus card?
>>
>>2659467
tallinja is just the name of the company operating the public buses. they offer a few different cards, it seems the 7 day unlimited ("Explore") went up in price to 25 euros

Leaf living in Malta.

1. Get the bus card for 7 days, its 21 euros only but keep in mind the bus is a clusterfuck on the island. Often crowded and never on time.

2. Get the bolt app, its the most efficient and cheapest way to move around the island.

3. St Julians is trashy as fuck, think Port Royal in the 1700s, a jungle of drugs, sex and degeneracy surrounded by casinos and night clubs. Dont book a hotel there or you will regret it. If you must book a hotel stick to Sliema or Valletta.

4. The pastizzis are good but way too fatty, a lot of the shops dont realize that the pastry has enough butter in it and add oil on top of it.

5. Maltese food is soso depending on the dish, i didn't like the rabbit as it was overpriced for a pile of bones. The fish soup was amazing and the beef braggioli was good too. Gozitan food is good too.

6. The island has 550k people living there so its overpopulated with all the third worlders they let in because the maltese cant be assed to have kids and prefer adopting dogs after marrying. But the island remains very safe because the pajeets and africans they let in get deported the minute they have an issue with the law, it's not France or Italy where they can commit crimes back to back and no one dares to do anything about it. Also the maltese have a mob justice mentality so most migrants dont cause trouble by fear of being lynched (or worse).

7. Pretty Bay has a nice beach in the south if you want to avoid the main beach clusterfucks in summer. Comino is nice too if you rent a catamaran with other people. Blue Grotto doesnt have a beach but down by the fishing port area theres a swimming area often neglected by tourists and the water is crystal clear. No beaches though its literally a ladder to get into water. They do dive classes as well there. DO NOT SWIM IN THE BEACHES NEAR ST JULIANS, they're literal sewage dumping spots for hotels. Another nice swimming spot is manoel island near sliema.

8. Get ready for outages.
>>
>>2660651
Why are power outages so common there?
>>
>>2660651
so just like you're back in Mumbai?
>>
>>2660922
>6. The island has 550k people living there so its overpopulated
I think is for this.
>>
>>2658856
Don't count on the bus to ever be on time. The roads are fucking dumb also. Lots of south and central americans there to learn english. Bout it.

>Lots of south and central americans there to learn english. Bout it.
What do you mean ?
>>
>>2658856
If you go in the winter, particularly January, it's super fucking cheap to stay as they're just trying to fill as many hotel rooms as possible

>>2660651

True of Paceville but Spinola Bay is comfy

But is it too cold?
>>
>>2661446
Been there during christmas and the weather was perfect. Not too hot, not too cold.
But I generally dont like warm weather, so it might be too cold for you.
>>
>>2660926

Kys ranjeet

>>2660922

Overpopulation in summer, not only you have a lot of expats, you also have a fuck ton of tourists and brit bongs flooding the place because its considered the cheap ibiza.
>>
>>2661056

Spinola bay is nice but walk further and you'll find that Balluta Bay is even comfier in the evening, there's a nice bar next to the public beach and pool right on the water that stays open late. Food and drinks are affordable and you got decent lighting at night and a nice breeze from the sea to keep you cool on summer evenings. Less crowded than Spinola as well.
>>
>>2661446
I was there in jan, was 17-18c every day and didnt get rainy weather. I got lucky, seems to be 50/50
>>
>>2661446

Not too cold, 15-18 degrees was the norm, we had a few days at 20-22 degrees with the sun and it was comfy af.

I have friends that went swimming even in december/january, the scandinavians living in malta don't care about the cold water lol.

What was annoying though is that while it could be relatively warm in the day, the minute the sun went down it would be very cold. On rainy days the rain would be limited but the wind would be insane.

Apartments here don't have cold isolation and some even have vent holes in the walls leading to the outside, which lets the cold in at night so you need to use the AC to warm up the apartment. Something to consider when you book an airbnb.

How does that work? Were you openly erect the entire time? Seems awkward to me
>>

>If you go in the winter, particularly January, it's super fucking cheap to stay as they're just trying to fill as many hotel rooms as possible

This. I got a penthouse suite in Valletta for dirt cheap, about 70/75% off. It's still warm/pleasant enough at that time of year and not crowded like the rest of the year. It does get a bit windy though but everything else outweighs that. There's no reason to go when it's hot IMO, it's far too busy and the beaches are shit.

I'm a Macedonian in Malta

I openly want to kill myself every time a Maltese or a Worker Immigrant tells me that this place is becoming a dystopian shithole and they want to leave within 5-10 years to Australia or to Luxembourg

like bro like i haven't escaped my shithole of a country to another shithole
>>
.
>>
A Maltese friend invited us to his house in Gozo, and we stayed there for 4 days
I really, REALLY loved the country

its like its stuck in time
its not exactly cheap if you arent looking for cheap stuff specifically, and cheap stuff is extremely greasy for some reason
I was gonna write some stuff up but the leaf here >>2660651 is like spot on lol
>>
>>2658856
>use public transport, it's cheap and can literally get you anywhere, BUT keep in mind sometimes the buses change their routes on the fly. This was jarring as fuck to me, but it never caused issues.
>ignore the main beaches - there are some fantastic hidden beaches worth visiting way more than the touristy ones, you just might need to get off the beaten path, but it's extremely worth it.
>there's an extra AC charge in a lot of airbnbs/hotels, it's not a scam
>Rabat is really chill, i recommend spending a couple of days there if you just want to relax
>Eat at hole-in-the-wall restaurants, it's cheaper and the food is fucking great
