What is a good and flavourful set up to use for dark elves?
I've never played this before. Which version should a newcomer play first? Vanilla, community patch, Caster of Magic?
>>1751432Any of them
>>1751432Vanilla has a ton of bugs that are fixed by the community patch. It's the ideal way to play it now. Caster of Magic makes gameplay changes and should be played after you're done with the base game and wants ot mix things up
>>1750463warlord is my favorite, spearmen benefit a lot from experience and the dark elf spearmen are already so good >>1751432community patch doesnt have a lot of bugs but you can still find some
took a fight with a horde of spiders and a colossus. my orc and minotaur mercs made short work of the spiders but the colossus almost killed my orc lord in a single blow
>>1751785Always remember that Thrown doesn't proc for counterattack. Your unit/hero needs to be the one attacking, for the extra damage from Thrown to apply.
>>1751432Definitely not Caster of Magic. It's a very different take on the original
>>1751432Warlock

am I getting bad RNG or do base-stat spells do fuck all against anything? I just cast Fire Bolt on some spearmen and they didn't even notice.
>>1755458a fully charged firebolt can kill a unit of spearmen if you are extremely lucky, if they are veteran or above its basically not gonna happen tho
>>1755458fire bolt is basic spell, spells have the same rule as normal damage aka 30% hit chance (unless its something like chaos bolt) and get reduced by armor, when hitting multi figure unit its better to use something like fire ball cause it hits all units at once
>>1759578>>1756341I think I see now. I used the minimum power with my spell, which rolled poorly and only would've targeted a single spear-men anywaysI guess I'll keep trying to git gud. Scourging cities from afar is cool and all, but it just doesn't soothe the soul like a combat spell would
>>1760007Chaos Rift is great, since it makes a strongly defended city ripe for conquest. Just dont forget to switch it off, after you sack it.Full chaos run with halflings is one of my favorite strategies, but very high in micromanagment. Casting chaos channel on every slinger, then sorting out the ones with demon wings. Flying elite slingers are no joke, and it gets really mean with chaos surge and warped reality.
>>1760011>chaos channel on every slinger>Flying elite slingersabsolutely horrifying. Base slingers already melt anything that isn't hiding behind a wall. That's why I just open a rift over walled halfling settlements and wait; there isn't a mortal army on Arcanus or Myrror that can storm such a place without staggering losses, and most summoned creatures fare just as poorly
>>1760028Slingers have only a few shots per battle and there are spells like warp wood which disable them. In close combat they suck. Also a fast moving hero (buffed with spells) like Torin or Fang will make quick work of them. Last option for chaos sorcerers: flame strike. really mean.
adamantium centaurs with flame blade + eldritch weapon killing everything in my game, they are durable enough to function as a core unit as well
Wish the Deity Empires dev didn't abandon his shit, that was the closest I've experienced to MoM in recent times.
>>1760116there is a Civ4 mod "Fall from heaven" that is quite similar, but since it has the awful Civ combat mechanics, I never touched it.
>>1760278It's pretty good. I used to play it all the time, back in the day. There are a few mod mods out nowadays, I should pick it back up.
>>1760278>since it has the awful Civ combat mechanics, I never touched itThe combat in FFH2 is better than in BTS thanks to some adjusted values like a warrior's base strength being higher and promotions being essentially twice as effective. You can also use spells to create swarms of expendable summons or cause area damage before combat begins, which lets you conserve your living units.
>>1751432https://store.steampowered.com/app/1623070/Master_of_Magic/It's the absolute superior version
>>1765090This
>>1765090but where's the sovl?
>>1765483pros: can play as goblinscons: completely devoid of soul
>>1750463How do you stop yourself from powergaming with 11 spell books or artificer cheese?>>1765090At first, I was wondering why you would need to buy a DOS game.
dont play the remake it is bad and you shouldnt give these people money
>>1765611Why?
>>1765611also why did they put town buildings and citizen management on separate screen tabs? straight to gulag for this ui imho
>>1765611i think its fine, there are some improvements (like option to see camp compositions before fight, 2 settlers at start speeding up dead time in early game), ironically the only complains i have are visual and sound design, im not a fan of washed up Thea engine graphic, OG MoM was such a colorful game and in remaster we get this...Also for some reason combat sound and death sounds annoy me by how bad they are, another problem is for such a outdated looking game PC requirements and load times are relative long, if you play on potato PC it wont be a smooth experience, they improved it a lot but the fact this game requires 12gb ram (to be fair i played fine on 8gb) is a crime. I would still recommended remaster over 1993 version to a new player, you really have to be fine with 80's tier graphic and janky DOS emulation + controls to play OG MoM.
>>1765090They turned my boy Tauron into a femboy and I didn't like that. Though it was in early access and they may have change that, but even considering doing this shit was unforgivable. Also did they botched the diplomacy system like they did in the community patch?
>>1765711>they botched the diplomacy system ... in the community patchqrd?
>>1766084They forcefully arranged the planes and enforced a good vs evil sort of dynamic.Life and Nature go along wellAnd so does Death and Chaos who could not tolerate competition previouslyWhich leaves Order as the fence sitter and thus the most hated alignment ironically.Originally Life was able to charm everyone unless you had a death book.Nature and Order only respected and appreciated colleagues who shared their respected booksChaos was viewed with suspicion, and only got along with wizard who were equally chaotic. But the likability sank if you owned more chaos books Death was viewed with suspicion as well, but even Death book owners had little sympathy for each other. They had additional loathing from life book owners. I prefer it over the new one, because it has a certain logic to it. Sure it favoured Life and discriminated Death, but it's not like you picked Death to go out and make friends and suffer competition, while Life you can play the good guy genuinely or manipulatively. The AI is able to do both, but it really depends on what Personality and Objective is rolled for the Life wizard.
>>1766102wasnt it like that in base game? i only played with community patch and playing chaos had pretty big diplomacy penalty, also i read they reworked some of the diplomacy in remastered in last couple of patches cause always war on higher difficulty setting was complained about a lot.
>>1765090God damn, the OC stuff is fucking terrible.
