After buying 4 prime lenses, then playing around with some old lenses
I have realized one thing:
>the lenses don't really matter
>crap lens look good because they're crap >therefore more realistic
>ultra sharp lenses look digital and unreal
>it's the artifacts that makes it cinematic
>the film cameras have layers upon layers of mat box filters and lens "scent" glasses to achieve an airy cinematic look

>ultra sharp lenses look too real so are not intresting

I'm short-sighted, I love sharp lenses because they provide me a different wiev of reality.
>>
i feel like lenses matter more than almost anything else for the actual "look" of an image
i only like shooting certain focal lengths, and i just have a bunch of "redundant" lenses so i can pick and choose the aesthetic I want
shoot enough that you can identify what lens and aperture you took a shot with, just by looking at it
>>

>shoot enough that you can identify what lens and aperture you took a shot with, just by looking at it
Post an example.
>>
>>4314745
An example that different lenses can render scenes differently? An example that the same lens will have different characteristics at different apertures?
Or are you just calling me out on being a nophoto?
>>
>>4314860
I'm legitimately interested in seeing comparison images from the lenses you have in the same focal length.

Why do photo shooters HATE motion blur so much?

Motion blur is what accentuates the MOTION, duhhh, how else would you know your subject is in motion??? The human eye is at 360 degrees shutter speed all the time.

I do video most of the time. I keep the shutter speed between 180 to 360 degrees, if the scene exceeds the speed of the lens, I'll have no choice but to raise it. But if the scene is too bright, I'll use a VND filter to keep it at 180.

>but muh shakes
>just buy a gimbal rather than a fast lens

bcause the subject isn't moving, why would there be motion blur?
If you shoot a moving car, it looks like they're still, there's osmething wrong with you
>>
>>4312689
It's generally aesthetically unpleasant, even if done on purpose
>>
>>4312692
your one job was to post a pic of blur that you think looks good to make your case. But instead you're just a rambling retard
>>
>>4312689
Because reality scanning and communicating feeling are two different things
>>
I think the worst are shutter speeds that are slow, but not quite slow enough that make moving things seem like soft or unfocused instead of having proper blur

It's a poor man's poor man's poor man's Leica.

I just found out these can be really useful for more than just macro, which I found out that are great for getting a 1:1 ratio on your subject.

What I didn't know is something like a 105mm/2.8 also makes an outstanding portrait lens along with even an all-around good prime lens. Also typically it'll be cheaper than a similar fast lens.

Is this really the best type of lens for all pictures until you need some kind of zoom?

I wish fast Macro lenses were more popular
Reminder to all of you that Tamron's current lens lineup was originally going to also include a 300mm f/2.8 VC USD with 1:1 macro
>>
>>4314670
>a 300mm f/2.8 VC USD with 1:1 macro
Would it have actually been 300mm at 1:1 or would they have cheated using focus breathing?
>>
>>4314672
It wasn't specified but that would require the minimum focus distance to be 0.6 meters which would require the lens itself to be quite compact for its rated speed
>>
>>4314670
fast macros don't make sense

Sure, there are some who are able to find creative purposes, but it seems to me like whenever someone intends to show what a fisheye lens is capable of all they can think of is taking photos and videos of skateboarding. How strange! Just because some faggots in America used them for that purpose in the 90s.

Its just an ancient pentax 645z in a more poorly made body, sans glorious ovf. At least the gfx100 compensates for general fuji build quality issues (WR so bad you can see the circuitry with a flashlight)

the gf 50mm is literally perfect normal and is the most portable native lens. there's also a tiny contax/yashica mount 45mm f2.8 which is around 35mm ff equiv. it has good sensor coverage and it's mega small even with the adapter

All video related questions and discussion is intended for this thread. Here we discuss techniques, gear and anything else related to capturing video footage. Please don't pretend to be an expert if you don't know what you're talking about. Kindly leave your ego at the door.
Posting short films/scripts or other work you've done is encouraged.
We tend to use and recommend DSLRs/mirrorless cameras because they provide phenomenal picture quality for their price, have large sensors (ie the same size used in high-end cinema cameras and higher) and have interchangeable lenses.
In contrast, consumer camcorders often have much smaller sensors and a fixed lens.

Anon needs to buy one large v-mount battery and a v-mount battery plate. That way anon can take one battery with him when he hikes. The only issues is that that one battery might cost more then the video camera it is powering.
>>
>>4314483
china batteries are $12 each, weigh nothing, and can be charged via usbc same as a phone
>>
>>4314084
I have been looking at the Sigma fp. It is very compact, it records to SSDs which would solve my capacity issue if I don't use the 12bit raw. It also seems like it has great low light performance. One problem with it is the battery life. One problem is that the EVF is so expensive, and would be necessary (a reason I'd rule out the fx3/0).

I think I may just end up with a camcorder. I saw there are some newer camcorders which can do 10 bit 4:2:2
>>
>>4314505
i just assume most anons asking questions don't have v-mounts, monitors or recorders.
>>4314510
bargin basement china batteries swell and warp, hopefully not in the camera. we literally had a drone battery hiss and shoot gas at my job last year and it wasn't even the std 3rd party garbage
>>
>>4314594
When I got my bmpcc 4k. I bought a v-mount battery and a v-mount battery plate since I wanted to be able to shoot for a whole day without needing to swap batteries. The batteries costs just as much as the camera did but it let me record for the whole day so I could record live bands to a 2tb ssd without needing to worry about swapping media and/or batteries and missing something at the music festival. Plus, I was so high I wouldn’t be able to change a battery at that festival even if my life depended upon me doing it.

Oh wait.. It has that goofy string focus thing. That's kinda cool, but still fairly limiting.

What's your plan with the camera?
>>
>>4314445
>>4314451
Probably spent way more than it’s worth but I had some cash to burn from some compulsory overtime this pay period, 300usd. I understand it will be limiting but it might be fun like the Polaroid is, has a graflok back so I can mount an instax onto it as well as roll film etc. just wanted to mess around with it really, no overarching plan lol. Don’t eBay groggy on the toilet in the mornings, kids.
>>
>>4314486
The limiting nature will make it a fun camera to use until you want more from a 4x5. Looks like the lens is worth at least 200 bucks, and it is cambo. I have no clue on the quality of takamura lenses.

You can say you own a cambo now as well!

Post your favorite shots of animals that you've taken. This isn't so much a gearfaggotry thread, but discuss your favorite telephoto lenses if you'd like. For me, it's the Sigma 150-600 F5-6.3.

Seeing these cameras go for about £600 on eBay used at the moment. I only just bought one a few years ago for about double the price used, what gives? I know the S5ii and iix have much better autofocus for video but honestly if you want to get into filmmaking, this camera is an absolute bargain now for what it can do.

The built in H265 with vlog is fantastic. L Mount means you can adapt a shit ton of vintage glass to it and it can be easily rigged out into a cinema camera if needed. Think I might snag myself another one soon to use as a B cam for documentary and gig work.

>lifeless, neutral colors always NEED "grading"
so... a raw file?
>>
>>4310906
No? Raw files do not contain colors. The input profile for the raw does. Raw files do produce different data from the same colors compared to raw files from different cameras, but there's no actual color in them. They're monochrome grids. A program running an algorithm uses an input profile to guestimate color from the monochrome grid.
Most editors have a totally flat profile to start from plus a editor specific interpretation and a few camera matching profiles that replicate SOOC jpegs. Capture one, for example, is known for their very good input profiles that are like camera matching+.

Maybe you meant "so... a log gamma?". Maybe, but panusonic color science in sooc video is dull enough that you might as well shoot in log.

Why do people keep doing this to themselves

Did your brain get fried by fiddling too much using your film simulation dial on a Fuji so that you can only enjoy oversaturated colors?
If you really believe a cheapo S5 is for gear chasers, do you also believe that. the GH5 and before that the Canon EOS 5D MKII were for gear chasers?
Those cameras are just beginner-priced modes of entry that offer a lot of flexibility vs. other cameras. A gear chaser would opt for something like the Sony ZV-E1, which offers a whole lot of compromise, awful colour science and a few gimmicks for 2500 bucks upwards.

and even though i as a 40 year old millennifart boomer often shit on gen-z i think it is kinda cool. Just imagine them going to whatever social gathering they are assembling in, bringing out all these cool semi-vintage digicams that nobody gave 2 shits about until recently..
The market is absolutely booming right now.. they want it all. The shittiest model you can imagine? Guess what.. they want it and they want to pay more than yesterday.
In certain niche markets these things sell for even above ebay prices which is insane.
Gen-z is unironically making photography fun again?
It is also quite interesting to think about the conditions that made this possible in the first place. So what happened exactly? My viewpoint is the following:
Younger Gen-z social media users have only used cellphones for photography.. they have finally realized that the platform has limitations.. they look at pictures their parents took of them when they were kids using digicams and want that particular look etc, meanwhile the large camera companies have completely neglected this market segment thanks to plebs only using their phones. just look at Canon for instance.. they haven't released a single Ixus model in 7 years and their last hoorah was nothing special in terms of specifications so we have to go back even further to find their high end models. Other companies have done the same.. there is nothing to be seen from the likes of Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Fuji, Samsung or any of the companies that for years made these ultra-compact and cool looking cameras.
It find it all really strange. You have a generation that simply loves this type of stuff and nothing to sell them. Just imagine these cameras with updated hardware, maybe some fresh colors and "limited edition" varieties.
Also feel free to post pics of cool digicams.

Android cameras are higher quality than ifag cameras lel

>>4314309
No, sony definitely makes a point and shoot. Its just expensive because its actually a good camera and not a “slowing down makes ur fotos good - see all building corners” cope camera.

>They have nothing
nope
https://electronics.sony.com/imaging/c/compact-cameras
what else is there?
om system tough - rebranded tg6. smaller sensor than sony compacts. worse iq. at least it's water-proof-ish right?

after sony ducks out all pns cameras will be baby sensor chinese generics such as these
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=digital+camera
and many more to be found on aliexpress

>>4314318
no, all lumix zs and lx cameras are totally discontinued and use smaller sensors than phones so who the fuck cares. tards will prefer old models because le retro, photographers want 1" sensors at least.

never mind that LE RETRO 1/2.3 sensor compacts are not any different from the brand new ones made in china... kek. a fool and his money are soon parted after watching a "....takes infinite film photos" youtube video.

that's not what i'm saying lol any advantage androids have is nerfed when uploaded to instagram

>advantage androids have is nerfed when uploaded to instagram
I don't actually think that's true. At a certain point (iirc like 26mp) Instagram will reject the file for being too big, so I did an experiment where I downscale it to 20mp vs a 2mp (1080p) file and the smaller file was very soft in comparison. Letting them do the compression for you results in higher image quality. Given that the differences are going to be less drastic than that, it should preserve the differences between them.

But then again I don't believe that android cameras would look significantly better to begin with, all phone cameras look like shit

If that's the bar to reach, Canon still has their X models.
