Thor should've competed this year, would've atleast given us a compettive podium.

>>74195566
Why is there never a livestream for wsm? This shit is so fucking stupid
>>
>>74196419
Guys who run WSM make all their money by selling the footage to TV stations who broadcast the comp. Livestream would undermine their main revenue source.
>>

How long does Luke have left in his career, do you think? Won Europe's Strongest Man a few weeks ago, but he's pushing 40 and getting beat on pressing events where he used to mog everyone.
>>
>>74196534
That's why he changed trainer from the fat slob coaching Tom to the newer one this year. To specialize in longevity and prolonging his career. Two year on podiums.
>>

Thanks, anon. Didn't know he switched.

Luke's been lifting since Dorian Yates was competing in bodybuilding, probably gonna call it at the 40 year old mark. Can't see him winning any big competitions anymore.

>>

I kinda feel bad for luke, he's the older brother and yet his younger brother is the talent chad that's actually winning stuff. I know he wins some local comps or whatever but i'm talking about the big ones. He's always behind the guys
>>
>>74196621
Think he got into the sport a little too late from just weightlifting. I mean from a self ego perspective it sucks for Luke but if I was able to get my lil bro out of an autism doom loop and he became a world champion, it wouldn't be too bad all things considered. If Luke didn't get Tom into the gym in the early days Tom would've probably ended up the tallest gas station clerk in Scotland.

6,000+ watching a "watch party". WSM and Colin should know the numbers Shaw Classic is making from streaming. Clearly is nowhere near WSM are making from those TV contracts. Shame WSM owners aren't as willing to share the prize money. Shame, most watching it on TV will be boomers who don't know how to use a phone or care about WSM to get spoiled.
>>
>>74196639
You're right, he's probably proud as fuck that his little brother with autism has acomplished so much and all because he introduced him to the sport. I think we all would be in his position
>>

>>
tl:dr on the current state of WSM?
From what I've heard everyone who was truly strong retired, is too old to be at their prime, got injured or is really slacking off so the winners are just nobodies who don't even look like they're participating

>>
>>74196590
He just won ESM. He's also weirdly gotten better at deadlift events in the past 2-3 years. He has at least a couple more competitive years ahead of him if he wants it.
>>
>>74196708
Is it? Thor wasted his best years doing gay boxing. Brian Shawn is an old man. Martins Licis injured doing gay paintings now. Stoltman brothers were supposed to be the strongest and in a random /tv/ thread I heard that they're washed now. Last winner is some random guy with a mustache I don't recognize.
>>
>>74196685
The field is kind of barren in terms of uber elite athletes like in 2017 but you have to give some time to guys like Matt Ragg and Evan Singleton to peak. Kinda reminiscent of the 2006 ifsa split when all Mariusz had to go up against was Phil Pfister and then a bunch of mid tier or older guys.

I thought Trey Mitchell would become a podium contender over time like Zydrunas but I'm not sure he has that same potential.

Mateuz and Martins are contendors but they seem more injured throughout the year than not. Martins is probably done with Strongman.

Hafthor could challenge for a title but he's being a little bitch over the 2017 WSM fallout

2025 we'll prob see the new wave power up and a mutant or two like Hooper to strengthen the overall field.
>>
>>74196685
This year kinda sucks, only 3 dudes with a serious shot of winning. With Kiels out, Novikov out, and Trey not recovered fully, the field just wasn't as competitive.

But Mitch and Tom would have been competitive in the Brian/Z/Eddie/Thor era.
>>
>>74196708
Yup they're definitely more al-round athletes now, not in a Pudz way sprinter way, Mitch broke the numbers down and they're all statically lifting beast numbers. Deadlifts have dropped off and overhead since Big Z but not by much. I mean Thor wasn't even close at the Arnolds with all his experience.

That achilles heal happened at the worse time for him and BZ was building and competing constantly in lower-mid comps wherea's Trey is, yeah it's hard to compare those two. Still think Trey will WSM twice.

Tom will keep it interesting because he could drop a stone or land a keg on his head at any moment. He shoudl have x3 WSM titles if he didn't dropped the anvil during lockdown. Don't get that with Hoops, he's usually so consistent. Which is also why if he wins it he'll be potentially the GOAT.
>>
>>74196834

>>74197673
Who wins the Conan's Wheel, though? I have no sense of who is best on this event.
>>
>>74197683
I'll have to give it to mitch

If you've seen tom with it in previous contests, he holds the bar kind of high on his body which inhibits your ability to breathe. Not to mention Hooper has incredible athleticism for that kind of thing

Tom did say he did like 2 mile long sprints this prep for worlds so it's possible he could place top 3
>>
>>74197673
yeah, I can see Mitch closing the gap on deadlift/conan's but unless Tom makes some mistakes it's pretty unlikely that it will be enough and nobody should be able to beat Tom on stones

still possible for mitch though, if he'd dropped any more points today there'd be no chance
>>
>>74197697
OK, so Mitch first and Tom 3rd= Tom 34.5, Mitch 33.5. Say Mitch wins deads and Tom second=Tom 43.5, Mitch 43.5. Then Tom wins stones and takes the title?
>>
>>74197673
Tom is much better at stones than hooper, no?
If Tom manages to stay within say top 3 on conans wheel and deadlifts he has it in the bag even if Hooper gets first on those 2 events, I guess?
>>
>>74197705
Not only beat Tom on stones if Mitch gets a point or two but someone in between Mitch and Tom so there's enough of a points differential. Which is a scenario that's not going to happen unless Tom literally fumbles a stone and it rolls backwards or some shit. Tom has to fuck up pretty big for Mitch to take this.
>>
Feel like Mitch and Evan can really run it down to the wire, but the decider being stones make Tom a pretty big favourite.
>>
>>74197705
Pretty much this.

Mitch's only chance is if Tom drops points on DL and Conan's. Mitch has to have a lead going into stones. A tie on points won't work, since they use last event rule, and Tom will BTFO everybody on stones.

A pretty tall order. But people fuck up. Injuries happen. Maybe a few people get between Mitch and Tom on the Conan's. We'll see. I'm glad it's at least a close competition and not just Mitch mogging everybody for 4 days of competition and chugging a beer at the end.
>>
>>74197730
>>74197697

Interesting. What are the chances Tom has improved his Conan's technique? His keg toss looked like shit and then suddenly he's tying the WR.
>>
>>74197711
>>74197715
Mitchell Hooper's win condition was walking into the stones with a 3 point+ lead. Now it's the opposite lol. It's Strongman though, anything can happen tomorrow(within reason)

>>
>>74197730
Think its still very close, Tom was never great at Conan's. Deadlift should be closer but more can get inbetween, Mitch is definitely still in it and Evan could be with a good day.
>>
>>74197738
>What are the chances Tom has improved his Conan's technique?

it's a good question, prob gonna look at some of the stoltman training videos tonight to gauge how he'll do tomorrow.
>>
>>74197738
It's possible. But he wasn't awesome last year in the heats. He was last in his group, and middle of the pack with all 30 athletes. Mitch performed better, and his back against the wall. I think Mitch will push as far as human biology will allow.

Conan's tends to be harder for tall, heavy guys. Pavlo is pretty light, and typically shits on everybody.
>>
>>74197772
Please do and post something in tomorrow's thread. Such a weird event that it's hard to predict.
>>
>>74197772

>>
>>74197773
>Conan's tends to be harder for tall, heavy guys.
Good point, never thought about that--they have to lift it higher and angle that the apparatus pulls is different. Lanklets BTFO?
>>
>>74197791
Great stats and I agree with your conclusion. Could be the Conan's that costs him the title. Needs to blow his wad there?
>>
>>74197805
Probably just damage limitation, he'll know what he needs starting last which a bonus. Deadlift is the one he needs to really push on I think.
>>
>>74197773
Pavlo is relatively light but he's 3rd tallest in the current roster @ 6'5
>>
>>74196685
Strongman as a sport is doing fine, but WSM is starting to lose it's place as the premiere competition. Arnold's, Reign, and maybe Shaw Classic are getting more attention whereas everyone seems fed up with WSM leadership. the top two contender in the world are competing in this comp but most of the talent that could vie with them has dropped out of the comp over the last couple of weeks.

First event Conans is going to be wild. Tom said he’s did alot of cardio work but there’s so many athletes and Canadians this year that could finish between him and Hooper. Evan also said he isn’t looking forward to Conans.

Watching last year’s WSM stones:
Mitch 5 in 36.96 seconds
Tom 5 in 33.26 seconds

I mean he’s the King of Stones but he isn’t unbeatable at them. He lost to Licis at Rogue. Not with atlas stones but still. Mitch could have improved he’s stones since then.

Surely whatever money WSM makes from the TV contracts would pale in comparison to the ad revenue it'd get from people watching live (plus potentially selling the livestream itself like the Shaw Classic, and charging for in-person seats), right? Either way it's ridiculous how badly this event is run both online and offline, compared to ASC/Shaw Classic/Rogue Invitational it's a joke, which is a shame.

fuck man Mitch's mental strength is insane, happy for Tom also he's been doing amazing
>>
>>74202034
So assuming Tom wins the stones, Hooper needs to win the deadlift and have Tom come fourth? Is my math right here?
>>
>>74202071
>>74202112
damn, Mitch with that reload and grind out. Reminds me of his shield carry from last year's finals. Probably could've faked out someone else to stop early if there was another implement and they went two at a time.

Pavlo basically the goat of Conan's I guess.

Good on Tom for improving on a shit event for him.
>>
>>74202195
Something like that but people tying on deadlift could fuck that up somewhat.

Tom can play it a bit strategic here. Coming in last he could deadlift for the least amount of points to tie with Mitch, save some energy, then just blast the stones
>>
Wonder if Tom v Mitch is going to be the next Shaw v Big Z rivalry, or is the talent pool too deep now?

Deadlift is starting
>>
>>74202990
Loz is reporting that Mitchell will have to do some weird mixed grip to compensate for his hand injury. Tom might have it.
>>
>>74203052
thats weird considering they can use straps
>>
>>74203082
Yeah, not sure I got what he was saying. Something about the angle of the strap being different would help.
>>
>>74203082
no figure 8 straps so still somewhat grip dependent

he's doing mixed grip + straps which makes sense but definitely not something he's trained
>>
>>74203101
Mitch going to send his bicep just before stones

>>74203112

not sure what the time limit is for deadlifts, but sounds like Tom should've taken a small breather before trying for 8. 2023 he wasted hella energy grinding the last rep for naught

>>
>>74203132
It's very hard to take a breather when you're strapped to the bar and wearing a suit. Your lungs are in a terrible position to get air in. You're better off just keeping as much tension as possible and using the suit like a spring to keep popping reps out til you run out of steam
>>
>>74203159
tacky is gonna disfigure Mitch's hands for stones, he really had no chance after yesterday
>>
>>74203165
Yeah, Mitch would have to win stones and Tom would have to come in 6th or something. No way unless he injures himself.
>>
>>74203169

I want to like Mitch because of his dominance but he makes it hard to. You can tell he's a natural asshole but puts on the guise of "be kind, lift heavy" to be more palatable for the common man. Wouldn't be so bad if he didn't whore himself out to every single fitfluencer on the planet, shilling nonstop. Every decision he makes is clearly about the money. Which I can't blame him too much because of the housing prices in Canada but still. Tom just seems more genuine overall, although he too seems to be playing it up a bit when a camera is on.
>>
>>74203335
Damn, Hopper just comes across as a very nice guy to me, but maybe i'm blind to it i dont know. But yeah i like Tom more regardless
>>
>>74203388
in Hooper's earlier podcasts he talks about how almost no one came to his birthday, how he'd deliberately single someone out to make fun of them because it was entertaining to him, then he became more self aware towards the end of college, went to australia, started to socialize more with people in a postive way. Something like 80+ people ended up at his going away party.
People can change for sure but fundamentally you are who you are, it's not going to really change unless you have some type of brain injury or some shit.

Not fussed if Stoltman or Hooper wins, both are decent blokes, but felt bad for hooper being booed last year when competing against the redneck-douche-bro Trey Mitchel.

True. He seems to take other comps less seriously. They also tend to run heavier (Arnold's, for example).

I've been collecting the major Strongman comps for a little while now and adding them to Plex, my goal is to have as comprehensive a collection as possible.

I currently have:

WSM (every year except this year off)
Rogue Invitational (every year)

I am figuring out how to get:

ASC (I've found a place that sells the DVDs for this and will try to rip them to digital, they have most of the years)
Shaw Classic (wondering how feasible it will be to rip these from behind the pay wall)

Are there any other shows I should aim to get? It's concerning to me how difficult it's been to find a lot of this and I'm keen to create the collection for historical purposes as well as for indexing reasons.

so cringe how he was getting people to give testimonials for the brand in his video as if a shitty marketing slogan is some sort of religious conversion experience
>>
>>74196728
>Martins is probably done with Strongman.

Martins is pulling the rare move of getting out while the getting is good. He's a manlet by strongman standards and his wins were lucky having Thor injured/retired. He can still say former WSM without needing to be 330 lbs on a 6'2" frame.
>>
>>74196419
>>74196439
>>74196442
WSM is very poorly managed. They're still living in the early 2000s. It's a shame, because the brand has so much prestige but they're gradually getting mogged by Arnold because his management and marketing is an order of magnitude better. Arnold is mogging the Olympia in the same way, desu.

>>
>>74208906
The whole sport and organisers are filled with spectrums. Tom, Trey, Evan, Thor all on autism. Mitch, Colin, Pa, Eddie ADHD.
>>
How much longer do you guys think Loz will be allowed to both coach and be a figure in the sport from a commentary perspective?

At the ASC UK he obvs had a few of his guys competing, and I specifically remember Bobby Thompson giving up on one of the events, but Loz was up on stage commentating and literally coached him to pick the implement back up, feels very corrupt.
