CompTIA certs are basically flash card exams, they're useful for providing you with the grammar needed to carry a discussion about broad concepts (which IS useful for interviews), and it is true that for a subset of IT jobs certain certs may actually be required, but at the end of the day hiring managers want to see some kind of hands-on experience. Knock out a cert or two while doing side projects you can show evidence for (or do one, then the other), and you'll have a fighting chance.
