Pre-summer 2024 edition

All video related questions and discussion is intended for this thread. Here we discuss techniques, gear and anything else related to capturing video footage. Please don't pretend to be an expert if you don't know what you're talking about. Kindly leave your ego at the door.
Posting short films/scripts or other work you've done is encouraged.
We tend to use and recommend DSLRs/mirrorless cameras because they provide phenomenal picture quality for their price, have large sensors (ie the same size used in high-end cinema cameras and higher) and have interchangeable lenses.
In contrast, consumer camcorders often have much smaller sensors and a fixed lens.

Because 3k is enough resolution that you can't see any aliasing unless you blow it super large on a super sharp screen.
(Theatre projectors aren't super sharp. You can watch 1080 on a cinema screen and it will look fine)
The advantage of higher resolution isn't that we need to view in higher resolutions. It's additional sharpness (which can be faked in post with decent sharpening) and the ability to crop and reframe without losing quality.
Arri cameras have insane colour science and dynamic range. They're unbeaten in terms of image quality (and it's even more ridiculous since they developed their sensor over a decade ago). But it's a lower resolution image because of how long ago they developed it. And that means that you lose all advantages of shooting higher res.
Almost everyone in hollywood has moved on from the alexa classic now anyway to the alexa lf or the alexa 35 (both 4.6k)
>>
>>4310493
I am just a hobbyist so I can’t justify buying an Alexa LF camera nor can I afford to buy one. I am just barely able to afford the classic. I got it because it was used a lot of films I admire and it was used by a lot of directors I admire. Right now I am buying expensive lenses. Once I get all of the lenses I want—I will think of upgrading my body. Hopefully, the price of the Alexa 35 or Alexa LF will go down within the next four years once they hit the used market. It might be even longer then that because arri keeps their value forever. I am guessing that 3k would be more then enough for YouTube videos.
>>
>>4310497
Buying an alexa as a hobbyist/youtuber seems like a tremendous waste of money to me but you do you.
>>
>>4310504
I am a colorist and all of the people talk about how amazing arri’s color science is and they sell lut packs to turn footage from potatoes into something that looked like it was shot on an arri. So, I just wanted an arri with arriraw so I could see what all of the hype is about and I can now tell my clients I graded footage shot on arri. They don’t need to know that of the arriraw footage I graded is videos of my cats playing. Hopefully an ad agency will be dumb enough to hire me—hopefully they’ll think I’m a pro because I graded arri and arriraw footage.

She gets angry because nobody will take her to the hospital, but when anybody offers to take her to the hospital, she gets angry at them and says she doesn’t want to go to the hospital. I can’t figure out woman. I am using these videos as a journal to help her vent, and I’m also testing you my cinema cameras and cinema lens so it is basically win win.

Post scanning rigs.

Apparently the main caveat of buying a dedicated scanner is slow as shit workflow, having to edit the picture with shitty software BEFORE moving to the next frame, and feed it manually yet.

Have you built a scanning rig? Did you order the kit online? What can you make a backlight of? How do you ensure the camera is completely perpendicular and the film is correctly aligned? Tell me ideas to feed the negatives without scratching them.

I have a Nikon D3300 with the kit 18-55 zoom. I've read most use a 55mm macro prime. I only have the kit lens and some "macro" extension rings. Is that good enough?

Pic not mine, but an interesting setup.

bro that aint so bad
if i try to scan two strips of film in batch mode in a row using a sa-21 with coolscan 4000 and vuescan without rebooting the computer, then it crashes and i lose the scans from the second strip

>>
>>4300746
I will be building a cheap DIY rig
>thick plywood plate
>flange and a pipe
>super clamp
>tripod head
>decent film holder
and that's all you need, the tripod head should be decent to easily focus and level the camera, I'll be using Sony a7II and an old Minolta macro lens with an adapter.
Whole setup should be around 100 bucks, instead of paying 1000 for a whole rig of some gay ass valoi or other stuff shilled by youtubers which is 3d printed cheap shit anyway
>>
Now here is a question.
Does a linear CCD in a scanner contain a bayer filter? Or is the DPI the scanner is able to resolve the "megapixel divided by four" camera resolution?
At what resolution are you better off with a dedicated rig compared to a good dedicated film scanner?

No matter what I do, I can't get my Nikon Z6 II to capture a sharp photo.
Pinpoint AF, tripod, shutter delay, changing apertures, whatever. Even tethering and going completely hands off. Doesn't matter what I do or how I do it, everything always inevitably looks like shit down at the 1:1 pixel level. There's always a soft blur. Not a single point in the frame is ever truly sharp.

This is a problem because I got this thing with the intent to digitize a bunch of stuff including some pretty big originals (too big to fit in a flatbed scanner) where I want to keep fine detail with 1:1 framing, no zooming in for separate "detail" shots. I set a goal for the ability to frame something 19x13 and get a sharp quality 300 DPI, but this isn't cutting it. At all. I don't know if it's my lens (NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8) or if it's my sensor not having enough resolution. Maybe the AA filter is ruining my fine details? or maybe advertised resolution itself is a scam when behind a bayer sensor?

I only care about such fine details in situations where the camera will be mounted and capturing still subjects.
Would a camera without an AA filter do better?
Should I get a 45MP Nikon or a 61MP Sony?
Would pixel shift likely solve all my problems?

Indeed anon, Sony recently did the same thing with the a9 III, baffling decisions but I'm sure the next yearly model they release will "fix" the problem as a "feature"

bump I'm not letting a photo thread be pushed off by a gear thread

I have heard very very good things about the Ricoh GRIII on YouTube and Reddit and am about ready to pull the trigger to make photography fun again and have a camera that is truly always with me so I don't miss any special moments.

But recently I have checked some of the photos from the camera on Instagram and they seem really poor. The smearing is almost worse than an iPhone 15 Pro and it's a lot bigger and almost the same price. Has anyone here actually used one or have links to good photos taken with them? I don't want to waste money if it is just a meme and not actually good.
>>
>>4310814
It's better than an iphone, but you have to use it correctly. Instagram peeps do not use it correctly.

My mom has the newest iphone, pro max, and I have no idea how anyone can say that piece of shit has a good camera if they own a screen larger than a hand or iunno, zoom in slightly

I've heard that in some ways it's worse than the GRII so if you don't need the stabilization (admittedly it could be very useful) or the extra resolution consider getting that one since it should go for much cheaper. I have the GRII and its APS-C sensor paired with the very sharp lens can produce satisfying results imo

I'm a bandwagon iPhone phototaker going down the Fujifilm rabbit hole.

First about to buy the Fujifilm XV100, didn't so almost ordered a Ricoh griii hdf, kept going and looking at Olympus Pen F, nope. Now I am at Sigma fp.

now considering Nikon d70s, for ccd

Where does this stop? :o

I have a D80 CCD and had a D90 CMOS. the difference is negligible desu, both have Sony sensors. maybe get a Kodak CCD like an Epson RD1(s) or Leica M8.
but out of practicality, if you need those dedicated buttons and maybe a viewfinder, just get any smol, lightweigt dedicated camera that you will bring most of the time with you.

I'm not sure it's crooked so much as the panorama distortion couldn't be fully correcred by keystone, left side looked pretty straight.

Does Z even have any other (100+mm) options? I guess you could adapt an F lens and save some money. Nikon's always had great macro lenses so you can't go wrong. Don't forget to put some money into lighting and diffusers as well. Macro is all about good artificial lighting.

In macro? I don't think so. My research leads me to believe it's going to get me much better in frame small subjects than my 23-120mm. I've ordered a small LED/diffuse set that I should be getting soon. In the meantime I just enjoy going to the forest and seeing what I can find.

I've seen these pop up once in a while o market place, or ebay for relatively cheap.

Are they worth getting for just dicking around or more of a hassle than anything else?
I heard the lenses are shit.

it's a 1inch sensor but old and worse than an rx100. needs perfect lighting conditions to not look worse than a phone, really. Nikon also didn't really make a lot of good fast lenses for it so with the sensor size having everything be in focus it ends up looking like a modern phone. i had one back when it first came out. I honestly loved the little thing, but even though it looks small in photos, it's not really much smaller than a nex 3 that i also had at the time, despite the sensor. the lenses were smaller, sure, but they were also mediocre. they weirdly chose to aim this squarely at the snapshitter/canon elph user thinking there would be a big upgrade market, but they also did it right around when cell phone pictures started to dominate. in theory could have been a nice little system but nikon bungled it. that said, something about the 1v1 with the 10mm lens was a cool little walk around kit. and it had some at-the-time class leading features like 10fps electronic shutter capture rate and fastest mirorrless AF for the time. Would i recommend you get one today? not a J1 certainly, and a v1 only if you really like how it looks, but not for image quality or what have you. If you want small, go full meme and get a pentax q or something.

sample photo taken with it in challenging light. it's not great. The gf had the j1 with the kit lens, never bought any other lenses and eventually she sold it once she upgraded to an iphone 5s and just used that for everything. I had a v1 and held onto it a bit longer, and also had the 10mm and 18.5mm. traded it for an a6000 eventually.

/fgt/ daily reminder (courtesy by anon): one stop per decade is (generally) bullshit
>negative film ages better than positive
>black and white better than color
>slow films better than fast
>storage conditions (dry/cool) matter more than years
>Negative film is shot 1 or 2 stops overexposed and then PULLED in development so that you build more density in the exposure and develop less such that the fog is limited
>slide/positive film is shot at box speed or overexposed and pulled.
>if you home develop you can also use benzotriazole as a restrainer for the the first developer in E6 process

I know for a fact that my Bessa R2M isn't as accurate as a SLR. Thats due to EBF, which I plan on resolve by >>coping with a m5.
I don't plan on making prints, and these are good enough for my purposes.

Been thinking about swapping my RB67 for one of these, just a lateral move?
>>
>>4310785
One's a technical camera with bellows focus, leaf shutters, back and finder accessories, and one's a handheld SLR.
Not really interchangeable.
>>4310779
Rangefinders are way more accurate for focusing wideangles, but for fast 50's it's a different story.
