I prefer my salad on the side. Any one who puts it on the burger is trying to hide the fact they are shit at cooking or the abysmal quality of meat. Burgers are one of those super honest dishes. They pretty much always turn out well enough, but just like the french omelete, it highlights the skill or lack thereof and allows you to judge someone broadly as a cook. If they can't make a burger right it's safe to say they can't make anything else very good.
