Turkey 101 is the perfect bourbon. I'd add Maker's 46 to that list. Beyond those two you're going to have to just buy a ton of other shit in order to figure out what your tastes are.
>>
>>20477920
Second Maker's 46, Knob Creek 9 is also primo if you can find it. any of these including 101 will give you a solid basis for what you're looking for. If you can't stomach these you don't like bourbon. a $300 bottle isn't going to fix that for you.

I do like other rums. But Gosling's Black Seal I can just sip on ice and it's reminiscent of a vanilla coke to me. Mixing it with actual Coke and vanilla is heaven if I'm in a diabetes-getting mood. I've used it in tiramisu and it was the best tiramisu I've made. I put it in eggnog at Xmas.
>>20478835
Sweet notes yes. But it's not like it has sugar. It's still a hard liquor that keeps you warm and toasty.
>>
If I'm just trying to get fucked up (which is most of the time if I'm honest) then it's Smirnoff with whatever appropriate mixer I have handy. Otherwise I mostly drink bourbon (usually Wild Turkey 101 or Old Forrester) and occasionally gin, which I recently started to like a lot.

For me, it's the McChicken. The best fast food sandwich. I even ask for extra McChicken sauce packets and the staff is so friendly and more than willing to oblige.

One time I asked for McChicken sauce packets and they gave me three. I said, "Wow, three for free!" and the nice friendly McDonald's worker laughed and said, "I'm going to call you 3-for-free!".

Now the staff greets me with "hey it's 3-for-free!" and ALWAYS give me three packets. It's such a fun and cool atmosphere at my local McDonald's restaurant, I go there at least 3 times a week for lunch and a large iced coffee with milk instead of cream, 1-2 times for breakfast on the weekend, and maybe once for dinner when I'm in a rush but want a great meal that is affordable, fast, and can match my daily nutritional needs.

I even dip my fries in McChicken sauce, it's delicious! What a great restaurant.

I am severely mentally ill in a high stress job but my illness makes me good at my job. I have to self medicate though or else I crack every few months.

I used to think I had taste and with the money I make, had fun making mixed drinks in my home bar or trying different wines. Nope, my brain will make anything taste good if it has alcohol.

I stopped mix drinks cause it’s to easy to get carried away, accidentally went through 3/4s a bottle of Elijah Craig in the span of 1.5 hours on top of the other liqueurs going in what I was making. I was already pretty bad at this point, typically going through a bottle of gin, whiskey, or vodka every 2-3 days. This time the sickness was real bad so I poured out all my hard liquor.

Then I realized I will drink literally anything as long as I can function the next day regardless of taste. Cause the very next day I was drinking fucking cocchi and cointreau straight. Thats when I realized I had a serious problem, surprisingly not when I had one week at work where I had to pound a shot in the shower before work to get through the stress.

So now I only drink dark stouts, or dark lagers cause I’ll bloat myself or fall asleep before doing too much damage. Samuel Smith’s oatmeal stout is my favorite, good flavor, not too heavy. Harp is good for a weekend.

Yes it’s a blog post but my psychologist suggested journaling before the stupid bitch will give me meds. This is easier than journaling and helps a little.

Plantation 5 is good for mixing. OFTD is good if your cocktail one has one source of alcohol. Meyer's if you aren't worried about extra sugar and just want cheap. Smith & Cross if you want more esther's. Doorly's if you want a little of everything. Wray and Nephew if you need a white ovenproof rum.

I'm a gin guy, Aviation (from Oregon) is my go-to and it's pretty inexpensive and available everywhere. If you can find St. George (from California) gin, they have two very different varieties and they're both good.

The Smith is a bit more expensive than the others it looks like. I don't know anything about esthers, is there anything putting it above the rest? Looks like Bacardi is what's in stock at my shop so I guess I'll grab that unless there are other white rum suggestions?
>>
>>20496676
Esters are a byproduct spit out by the yeast as the booze ferments. They're what's going to lead to fruity and funky sorts of flavors in whatever alcohol you're drinking.
White rums honestly aren't going to be THAT different from each other, since they're lacking a lot of that funk that makes different rums unique.
I'd try a few different ones and see what floats your boat, it's your money and liver so put what you like through it. For some more recommendations, check out HowToDrink on YouTube, that guy loves his rum and he has a few episodes talking about different uses for different kinds, what makes them unique, what to look for, etc.

Gold and green are actually worth buying unlike blue.

I've had the whole lineup within the last year and at the moment gold and green are the best value for a decent drink, black is the best daily drinking value. Double black is kinda shit, very one-dimensional flavor. Blue isn't bad, but it's overpriced and it has no lingering finish which a $200+ bottle should linger a bit on your tongue. Blue very quickly fades away.

>>
>>20503997
Red is shit, only okay for mixing with coke when you're out and don't want to blow more than $8 on a drink.

Black is acceptable for drinking but is still kinda meh, the price is right though. Double black is very smoke forward and not my thing as it's very boring smoke.

Green is where things start to get good, some nice smoke, good age so it's fairly smooth and has a nice finish.

Gold is another good one, caramel/oak notes without much (if any) smoke. Very drinkable neat.

18-year (formerly Platinum) is a bit overpriced, though still solid, it kind of splits the difference between green and gold, not as smokey as green, but has a bit of smoke in there. Overall I wouldn't buy it over gold/green unless I couldn't find the other two in stock.

Blue is good, all around nice flavor, it's just not exciting and the flavor disappears very quickly on the tongue which is kind of a shame for a $200+ bottle, you generally want some lingering flavor to remind you that you spent $200+ on that drink.

Not really since JW is blended scotch and tullamore dew is blended Irish whisky.

And the upper tullamore dew range is single malts anyway, not blends, whereas JW is, and always has been a blender, not a distiller, they don't MAKE any of their scotch, they just blend scotch.

Bourbon, preferably a high-rye content one.

I've come to appreciate wheated bourbons
>>
So, what's the deal with bourbon vs scotch?
I understand wars were declared after words like that, but I'm honestly curious. I've been sampling some whiskies, but they've been mostly scotch or irish. When it comes to bourbon, I've only tried Four Roses Yellow Label (nice and flowerly, but a bit thin. Who'd have guessed from the cheapest stuff they make?) and Woodford Reserve (neat and woody, but... boring)
It's not a fair comparison, but I find bourbon just not as interesting and flavourful as scotch. Are things like picrel or Four Roses Single Barrel worth it? I definitely don't ask just because Wild Turkey 101 is half the price of any decent scotch here.
>>
>>20508133
They're certainly tasty in their own way. Local liquor store near me keeps this stuff on hand; very wheaty. Pretty good, but goes down more "clean" than I typically seek in a bourbon, which is why I tend to favor the rye oriented ones.
https://www.pantherdistillery.com/minneapolis14
>>20508135
If you're new to the bourbon game, I'd recommend a higher wheat content bourbon, maybe shorter aging, and possibly one a little lower proof. They leach out more from the wood and you get a very strong, sometimes overwhelming, oak flavor.
>Scotch
The grain is smoked with peat moss.
Made in Scotland - Irish whisky obviously is made in Ireland (often with similar techniques)
Scotch, like all whisky, needs to be aged, however they most frequently utilize used barrels, as the sharpness and smokiness from the wood has leached into the first spirit that was in there, and the wood takes on some of the flavor profile of the previous spirit. Incidentally, many distillers like to use old bourbon barrels for this purpose.
>Bourbon
Needs to be 51% or more corn, and aged in a virgin oak barrel. Comes off with a smoky flavor picked up from the virgin oak.
>>
>>20508089
BB was picked specifically because it's known for deep, dark, smokey mocha flavors and it's higher strength than other blends in its price range. (It's rare to find 100+ proof Scotch for under $100)
>>
>>20508161
>If you're new to the bourbon game, I'd recommend a higher wheat content bourbon, maybe shorter aging, and possibly one a little lower proof. They leach out more from the wood and you get a very strong, sometimes overwhelming, oak flavor.
Just re-read what I posted; I meant that backwards. Lower proof and less aging leaches out less oakiness, leaving a milder flavor. Wheat is also known for having less of a punch.

standard Bourbon doesn't have the flexibility of Scotch or Irish since they HAVE to use new white oak which blasts the corn liquor into a state of debilitating wood sugar coma. the corn used is also the lowest grade 99% of the time. it's not worth paying more than ~ $60 on any given bottle of bourbon, no matter the circumstance.

>>20508179
maybe but the price range means its competing with single malts and most core range offerings are going to easily outperform even a outstanding blend to my palate.

So post some.

I've had most of the single malts I can get for similar prices to JW and JW holds up pretty damn well.

Maybe if you're in Europe and aren't getting fucked on Scotch pricing, but in the US at least JW is available and affordable compared to most single malts, and generally better tasting (and far more consistent from bottle to bottle)
>>
>>20508308
>most core range offerings are going to easily outperform even a outstanding blend to my palate.
Your tongue must have gone blind to strength of liquor, then, because most people will instantly notice the difference between 40% and 50%
>>
>>20493627
They actually all have the same mash and it's 13% rye, which is not considered high. RB uses older barrels in the blend and they bottle it at close to barrel proof.
>>20477241
Makers is delicious. If you want to up the ante or add a little heat in exchange for a lot more complexity and flavor, find a store near you with wood series private selects, it's one of the best midrange deals in bourbon.

>>20508135
If you liked the woody flavor of WR, they make a double oaked offering that has a lot more going on (besides just more intense oak). Four Roses SiB is also awfully different from regular 4R, especially since it runs at 100 proof
>>20508308
>they HAVE to use new white oak which blasts the corn liquor into a state of debilitating wood sugar coma
You are a flat out inexperienced bourbon drinker. Char can run down to a light toasting, and blending younger juice can make the entire flavor profile extremely fruity, for example.
>the corn is low grade or something
Christ dude

Anyway there's no wrong answer with bourbon except paying secondary market for buffalo trace meme offerings that used to cost $30 5 years ago. Try a lot of stuff and try it next to each other
>>
>>20509213
for smell, maybe, but for taste it really depends. I was mostly referring to the intensity and complexity of a single malt compared to a blended scotch. blended malts are on par with single malts but should be presented at a bliss point abv and not just either 40-46% or cask strength.

>>20509205
UK scotch prices are usually over what the US is paying.
>more consistent bottle to bottle
that's because the batches are several hundreds of thousands of liters a piece for shit like JWR/B compared to a 12 year old single malt from a distillery that doesn't produce blend filler might be blending a few dozen casks per batch.

>>20509436
Wild Turkey is coming off the still at a lower proof than most bourbons and they dont let it gain proof during maturation.

Considering the post you were replying to was talking about JW green/gold ($60-70/bottles), talking about red and black ($20-40/bottles) being worse than 12 year single malts ($50-70+/bottle). No shit red and black are worse, they're also generally a lot cheaper.
At least in the US, I can drink a JW blend that is 15 years old (green) for the same price (or within $10) of Glenfiddich 12, Bruichladdich 10, Highland Park 12, or $25-30 cheaper than Macallan 12.
>>
>>20509822
>UK scotch prices are usually over what the US is paying.
Are you stupid or retarded?

Glenfiddich 12 is $50 in my part of the US, from what I understand it's closer to £30 in the UK. A good $10-15/bottle cheaper. And I've found that's generally the case for the US, bottles cost $10-20 more as that's presumably what it costs to ship cross the pond.
>>
>>20510072
>>20509999
UK prices also include VAT, which the US doesn't, and US liquor tax can fluctuate wildly depending where in the US you are.

What is this replying to? First off, lower barrel entry proof is typically desirable in a whiskey, since it has to be proofed down less when bottling. And yeah, I see you noticed a non-SiB high production bourbon has a standard bottling proof - incredible observation (seriously fuck off and pick a topic you know something about)
>shits close to $100
My last one was $68. The current state of the bourbon market is what it is. When we talk about value, I'm comparing it to a bottle of OWA107 which gets worshipped and sold at $140.
>rotten wood and dirt cheap grain
Here watch
>Oh dood scotch is way worse because the smokiness hides the distillate too much and they reuse cheap worn out casks so you don't get balance and wood interaction

depends on the exchange rate at the time of purchase, but your state tax must be high. Glenfiddich 12 is never over $40 unless you go to an indian/chinese owned store.

>>20510087
the stuff worth having privately shipped would be more expensive stateside because the store and distributor want more than their 33% cut and everyone else can get fucked. on average saving about $30 per $100 bottle after shipping.

>>20510654
>They actually all have the same mash and it's 13% rye, which is not considered high. RB uses older barrels in the blend and they bottle it at close to barrel proof.
Rare Breed having less than 5% of the advertised 12 year old in the mix, you are basically paying 2.5x the price of WT101 for on average less than 10% abv and teaspooned 12 year old stock.
>enters cask at low proof good
lol you can't be serious. use of column stills to gain high yield alcohol with minimal distillation(legally can't exceed 80% for bourbon) and then let the Angel's share evaporate no more than enough for them to to be able to profit from each barrel.
>OWA107

the down to earth side is doing just fine. the craft faggotry has absolutely gone overboard and is an total laughing stock and your defense of such practices makes you look like a stooge who's invested and got something to lose. I didn't dismiss the distillation, I vehemently criticized shitty hipster tactics that are tall tell signs of trying to eek out easy money from a booming(now down trending) market. I wont gloss over the fact that scotch production has been downgraded by the streamlining of mass produced grain, profitability focused fermentation-distillation-maturation cycle, but I will absolutely mock and detest product made stateside going through the roof with greed.

I don't know if that was you or not in that original post, but I was talking about what the actual difference was. Not declaring value due to a nebulous age statement. The main argument that can be made for it are the proof points anyway
>lol you can't be serious
It's basic chemistry that water interacts with the cask more than alcohol. Again, you just don't know what you're talking about. Someone who wants flavor is typically going to want more points regardless, but if you're going to choose something proofed down, it should be done after dumping. Again, you just don't know what you're talking about.

Recently, I've been drinking Calypso silver rum.
40% and $13.33 for a 1.75L bottle.
It's swill, tastes like cheap vodka, but I'm a poorfag.
Anyway, to go along with that point, what add ins would improve it? I once bought a couple bottles of whiskey and I added redhots to one to make some fireball, which I enjoyed.
Is there something easily added to a rum to impart a flavor and cut down on a bit of the harshness.
Apologies for any issues with the post, I've started drinking, and it's only 5:40 right now.

Is the rum worth it? Has anyone had it?

I'm not sure, it has a very deep "cooked" flavor, bordering on burnt tire. It was nice in aged eggnog (with primarily bourbon and some cognac), but too much would have ruined it.

Same for me and Johnny walker. Always hated it and said it was cheap blended shit then I actually tried JW green and it was fantastic. JW red is still shit and I hate it, and JW black is meh as well. But green? Sign me up.

Yes, however Old Monk will give you more vanilla notes and won't have as cloying of a "burnt" note

oxygen helps, until it hurts. I would never consider a bottle drain worthy unless I suspect it's fake in which case somebody's going to pay for such a swindle.

also, small things can effect your senses and throw off your experience like a hot shower, heavily spiced food, the weather and your mood, just to name a few.

if you ever want to speed up the process of aeration, GENTLY pour the bottle into a clean vessel and then back into the bottle again a few times but I wouldn't expect much difference within the first 24 hours or so because time is the best after water.

How come new types of alcohol haven't been invented yet? Im thinking of something thats like whiskey but uses entirely novel stuff; different grains, different wood for barrels, different yeasts.
Why haven't they made any "new" types that are mainstream? I need to get into homebrewing and experiment because this seems like a huge oversight
>>
>>20531258
if you create a new spirit then it needs a market and that market is already filled with shit that sells. why add more competition?

This happens all the time, they just call it "(whatever) whiskey" instead of making up a new name.

Everything besides 7 is great
My local store has the 10 and 12 year, plus a local pick single barrel. They wanted 250/350 them tho. Very tempting. They also had michters 10 year rye, along with the barrel strength rye. Super tempting. Had a Weller's special reserve for $80 in the shelf, but that wasn't as tempting as this. Small town store in TN. Had a couple pappy's too.
