I am a massive fan of Eley .22 packaging. Something about the slick block lettering and solid colors. They also color code their different lines of ammo which tickles my autism brain.
>>
Aguila's new .380 box looks pretty slick too. The asymmetric red is nice and eye-catching, almost like a videogame pickup.

I don't think the new Eley packaging looks as nice as the old but I'm happy they kept the color scheme. Imagine having a shelf fully stock with a rainbow of different boxes of .22 and carefully selecting the right one each time you go out shooting like and aristocrat choosing a fine cigar.

Swiss GP11 is my favorite surplus cartridge in part because of the box. It's simultaneously somehow utilitarianly martial and sleek. And the perforated pull tab built into the box is such a Swiss touch.

Yeah. the caps and the cartridges themselves are missing from that pic. It looks like someone put lead balls down inside the old wooden box. Each hole would have contained one paper cartridge and then a separate cap.
>>
>>61658169
Very interesting. Premade cartridges from back in the day right when precision machining and replaceable parts started to become common must have been amazing. Imagine living around that time and your dad had to make every bullet he ever shot by hand with a lead mold but you can just pop down to the general store and by a dozen cartridges for a few cents and they're all virtually guaranteed to be more accurate than anything you could make.

.700NE is a literal meme. It was a modern flex for H&H and something to market to extremely rich gun collectors who'd gotten bored with historical safari rounds.

People see stuff like this and don't realize most elephant hunts are done with .4xx chamberings. .577 was the largest common one and .600 was as powerful as a real hunting cartridge ever got.
>>
Not near my house rn, but I love the WW2 8x56R packages. 10 rounds on 2 clips and the box is oddly shaped like the clips.
>>
>>61658558
>and don't realize most elephant hunts are done with .4xx chamberings.
Pretty much this. .450 Nitro Express was the standard British dangerous game cartridge, that only changed when England outlawed .45 cal cartridges in their colonies and the .470 NE was created to solve that problem. The .577 was never all that common the .600 was very rare and considered overkill even by professional hunters. The .700 only exists because some richfag wanted a big gun from H&H, they had said they weren't going to make any more .600s so they created the .700. It was more for bragging rights than anything else--same as the .600 really.

I've never smelled the supposed cat pee/urea smell you're supposed to get from shooting their 22. 3k Rounds of the stuff and I'm still not noticing a smell difference from federal/cci or Winchester.
>>
>>61659047
they use a non-toxic primer mix.
>>
>>61659176
It's more like the smell of firecrackers
>>61659186
Wait, so the other bullets primers are poisonous?
>>
>>61659186
I can't speak to their centerfire stuff but their 22 ammo uses Eley primer but the ammo doesn't smell like Eley ammo does. Therefore I think it's the powder, not the primer. Furthermore, the Eley compound is not non-toxic, rather it's well known for its reliability.

>>61659255
>Wait, so the other bullets primers are poisonous?
Most primers contains lead styphnate. If you wash your hands after you shoot this is not a problem.
>>
>>61659268
>lead styphnate
rimfire primers also contain barium nitrate.
>>
>>61658513
No. In fact the modern GP11 doesn't even have a toxic primer.

>.577 was never all that common
wasn't it just a magnum version of the infantry rifle literally everyone had
>>
>>61658558
>>61658603

To be specific, .700 Nitro exists because at one point some extremely rich jackass ordered a ridiculous indian-prince-pimp-king special .600 from Holland and Holland with the provision that it would be the last .600 they ever made. So when, a few years later another extremely rich guy turned up at H&H wanting a .600, but they wouldn't, so eventually some bright spark said "well, what about a .700 instead?"
>>
>>61660026
The .577 Nitro Express was basically a smokeless version of the earlier .577 black powder Express cartridge. There were three versions of both cartridges, 2.75, 3, and 3.25 inch. All of those were more powerful than the .577 Snider infantry rifle which was only a 2.5" case, but they weren't just longer they were also larger diameter as well. The Snider used a .570 bullet, the others used .585.

>>
>>61668923
Lol you got a random wadcutter in with your FMJ range ammo. Fucking Winchester QC is retarded. I also got a Super X headstamp .22lr in with Herter's (Cabelas) ammo once so no doubt they make it. There's a reason I'm not crazy about Winchester and it's because their shit is about the same price as everyone else and their QC is just about worse than everyone else in every aspect. Their .22LR under Herters grouped like shit and had an underloaded round (I've never had this in thousands of rounds). Their 5.56 is a'ight though and I've since tried their Silencer and subsonic ammo which was okay.
>>
>>61668923
Where did you get the box of ammo? I've seen this at a gunshop that would take in ammo on trade and from estate sales. Looks like someone put a round of wadcutter in there and passed it off as a full box of ammo.

Store that won't let you check the ammo before you buy it always sketch me out. I've found boxes where people stole the 3 rounds they need for hunting season and left the box on the shelf.

I didn’t think about buying self defense ammo, I just asked the guy at the counter for .38 ammo and he said that was his best deal. This revolver is what I sleep next to, does it make a big difference on usability for self defense? Is quality control better or something

>>
>>61668996
>>61669011
I'd probably get actual SD ammo instead of range FMJ. Winchester at that close should be fine as accuracy isn't a huge deal; I don't think I ever had a dud but I'd worry about QC issues considering my experiences (though probably biased). I'd get Federal or Remington (now owned by PSA) or maybe even Aguila. CCI might also make .38? I don't know; I mainly buy their .22. Buy some cheap range ammo for the range and then buy some good defense ammo. /HG/ Handgun General would be able to point you in a better direction for handgun ammo quality and types of bullet construction, etc. Also look at ammoseek; if Sportsmans Warehouse is anything like Cabelas their ammo is hilariously overpriced.

BTW if you want to do something like this, just go to the local print/fax/scan place and get it printed on thick posterboard from Dollar Tree or something. Their printers are WAY fucking better than anything you have at home. Might even be able to upscale (see: bigjpg, waifu2x, other AI upscalers) the texture a little and sharpen in photoshop/gimp a little to make it look better. Way nicer than printing out each side and gluing it to a pre-existing box. Cut through the glue joint on a similar box, scan it, piece it together in some program that won't scale images like Photoshop. Make sure to keep a scale in the pic like a flat ruler. Place textures over box. Print. Not sure how to print full scale if bigger than a sheet of printer paper as I've run into that issue though I'm sure MSWord has some options for paper size for those not retarded but it tends to scale images as it wants just to fuck with your head.

with self defense ammo you pay like 3x the price for the cartridge to get a whole bunch of marginal benefits like nickel plated brass, reduced recoil loads, expanding/tumbling bullets, and an extra qc pass. those things dont really matter but they dont hurt

with 38 special the guns don't have a minimum recoil requirement to cycle like semi-autos so 'specific terminal ballistics' means there's a lot of different loadings for 'self defense.' hornady makes a critical defense lite that's like 30 grains lighter than their regular critical defense which means it wont recoil very much but its also less powerful than a 32 h&r

Wild looking. I know things have probably changed and they're GTG since I first read about them last but I remember people had lots of complaints about the Hornady Frontier line of .223/5.56 a couple years back. Which is a shame if true because the "Frontier" line is actually an old name that they brought back. IIRC sometime around the 60s-80s Hornady used to make ammo under that name/line and they brought it back in ~2014.
>>
>>61681506
To be fair to them, it was the ONLY round that gave me a problem in about 300, I just thought it was sort of funny. I thought it was a light strike at first (didn't bother checking) and just picked it up off the ground and tried again when I realized it was like that.

The actual brand I'll stay away from now is Armscor, since some .500 S&W I bought from them wasn't burning powder completely, getting light strikes, and a host of other things. Like, it'd sound and feel like a "pop" and made me think I had a squib, with powder literally falling out of the cylinder, so I pretty much swore it off since then. Fuck Armscor. I would've loved to have taken pictures, but I guess I was just a little too "freaked out" or something at the time.
>>
>>61681529
Lol I stay away from Armscor after hearing about their .22lr. Never bought any but there's probably a reason why there's STILL a listing for 2.3cpr Armscor .22lr on ammoseek as of yesterday despite anons telling me about that like 3 weeks ago.
