>There is one thing not to do, and that is simply to drift along with the daily routine, making no extra effort. You will soon find yourself middle-aged, having done nothing more than routine jobs, and being little farther along than you were years ago. The extra effort is the difference between the great mass of mediocre artists and the comparatively small group of very good ones.>And in Art, study can never stop. You will find sketches galore in the studio of the good man, with the paint quite fresh. The mediocre artist's sketches are old and dusty.>I have seen so many middle-aged artists still hoping, whose samples are frayed at the edges, and thumb-marked with time. Sometimes it has been a matter of years since they sat down and actually did something to give their hopes any promise. They are plodding their lives away at something they hate, and doing nothing about it. These are the men who never seem to have had a chance. The truth is, they never seized a chance.- Andrew Loomis, Creative Illustration/Studies/ General is all about improving your art and never settling for mediocrity. >>7169509Then there must be some misunderstanding here - I try to do memory copies more than a week later after I originally copied it, I have not previously “shown my work” before this, but I can show you the exact plates that I’m trying to reproduce from memory, and wherever I can’t (which is often), I am trying my damndest to substitute in some type of remotely close set of shapes that I can muster up that will still represent that I had learned something from copying said plate in the first place.Top left is a pair of legs I tried to style after doing a Norakura copy, Top right is a Loomis head with part of Mustang's outfit from FMA, Bottom left was me trying to roughly capture the shape of a Taco head + adding hair to it which I've also copied from Paryi (though hair has not come very naturally to me so I don't remember much from the copies I did of him weeks ago, as I've also gone back to grinding just pure anatomy again)All memory copies / best memory reproductions I've done here were done more than 24 hours after the original plates were copied.

>>7168981sword edition>>7168999I feel like I'm getting carried by the model in these ones. I still fall for the trap of trying to draw outlines too closely. I think it's quite hard to let go and only draw S and C curves. The worms in my brain do not permit this.>>7169341You flatter me. I still aspire to the simplicity your gestures elicit. I have to spend hours to make something look like it was perhaps a quick sketch. Maybe I have to look into timed poses.>>7169485>>7169761>>7169153I guess my 2 cents to add onto the other anon would be to forgo the memory drawing part and only focus getting an exact copy at first.Learning anatomy (Bridgeman, Hampton, etc.) will do you no good because you still would have to recall the exact proportions of a muscle or simplified shape you would want to implement. Currently the fundamental that would benefit you the most is proportion or accuracy.I believe that the best way to practice this would be to find lineart artwork (not a real life picture) and try to copy that. Like the Igor Stravinsky exercise except you don't have to turn the image upside down and you can find something that appeals to you.Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

Do you practice urban sketching regularly? Practicing urban sketching is the only thing that gets me out of the house, and it has been essential for me to improve my freehand drawing and observation. I usually only carry 3 fine line pens and a sketchbook, but I'm thinking of getting some watercolors. I usually go to squares that aren't very busy, as I still have difficulty dealing with crowded environments. It's a very positive and therapeutic activity. I used to be very depressed, but when I'm in crisis I always take my materials and go out to draw, regardless of the time of day. I don't think about making beautiful or perfect drawings, I just let the stream of consciousness flow and capture the essence

>>7164229i think there's difference between two, the internet hyper realists that just autistically print out the image and those who can actually construct the image and understand the way it works
>>7168932That’s not really true. A lot of non-photographers don’t realize how much professionals design the lighting, pick costumes, perspective, travel, make camera/lens choices, etc. Then there’s photo editing which has been done since the 19th century. It's part of why drawing copies of photographs is seen as unskilled. Because the photographer has made all of the artistic decisions already.

>>7169758this painting is really coolThis dude's reputation is basically some old ghoul who probably eats childrenThe painter took that repution, he draped charles in a vortex of chaos that either looks like hellfire or screaming souls, but he painted his face and hands in a soothing, earthly tone. Charle's demeanor/body language is gentle and the butterfly is such a great detail, as it's unbothered by the madness happening around Charles, like it's not really there, it's just an illusion. This painting goes so far to try and humanize charles, it's pretty genius, it's the single best thing I've ever seen about that guy, it almost convinces me he's a nice person. Also this painting's intensity would probably explode the brain of a victorian peasant and that's also pretty cool to me >>7169949this is why tasteful abstraction in art is so powerful, it allows the human mind to find patterns that aren't really there

>>7169783it's a visual novel. Im making it for a class, since the final project was a multi media kinda thing meaning you could do whatever as long as it presented an argument of some sort. my argument is "everything will be alright" and im basically just using the girl character to be the optimistic opposite of the player character who's more nihilistic. pretty much they just go on a walk to a store to find food to feed a stray cat and she talks to you and tries making you realized things aren't all so bad. script still in progress, but im glad you were interested.

What are some things/aspects of art that no one (including this board) is really honest about?
>>7158296If you didn't start drawing a lot as a kid, you should honestly pick a different hobby/path. Most late starters will never get good (with some exceptions) because they will get demoralized far easier. Kids won't care that their work sucks, at least not too much. Adults are far more critical.People hate hearing this because it's bleak but it's also true. There is absolutely a point where it's too late. At least, too late to become great and forget about becoming a fucking pro.

Whew boy, is this guy the most overrated painter of all time or what?
>>7166813If you're a complete beginner (or haven't even started), then his paintings look nice. But even then, I have never encountered anyone who said that his paintings were of particular skill. As many anons have said, Bob Ross was liked because he made painting a relaxing thing where you don't have to stress over the end result, and he showed how anyone could do that. He never held himself out as some kind of artistic savant. He just wanted people to paint and chill out.
>>7157654>Hating on Bob RossStill better than 99% off this board.

I got a positive response so here's the first thread for studying Figure Drawing for All It's Worth by Andrew Loomis. Here's a basic schedule for the first chapter, but feel free to ignore it and work at your own pace. A schedule for the rest of the book will be discussed later.Start by reading the first 32 pages. Don't worry about copying the drawings yet. Pay attention to the basic proportions pages. When you're done, got to page 38.Pages 38-49: 2 weeks. Take your time learning the mannequin. Try drawing it in various poses. Pages 50-56: 1 weekThen spend 1 week going back and studying the pages that were skipped.Don't just copy! Try redrawing Loomis' drawings from memory after your initial copy, and take note of what you got wrong. Apply what you've learned to photo reference and try inventing figures from imagination. The book:https://files.catbox.moe/d2501d.pdfAnd here's some refs:https://files.catbox.moe/7246sw.zipGood luck!
