I've selected a couple of photos from this year to share and get some criticism if you guys willThe sequence is not chronological but rather loosely based on themes, whether of subjects or medium experimentationsAnyway, here it is
this one is kinda cheating because it's from last year, but it was taken on december 28th or 29th so fuck it

>>4313173you look like you make poor decisions but stick with them n make them good decisions belatedly
>>4313191I don't know if you came to this conclusion from looking at me or at my photos, and I don't know if that's a good thing or badI can't say you're wrong, though
Grim, zach tier.
>>4313440which Zach?and why grim?you got me curious
>>4313157i like this
>>4313173always remember before posting these are the people you argue with in here
>>4313447this is you>>4309912the only difference is that you are shooting film
>>4313167feel like this would have gotten /p/raise in the garbage thread
>>4313440>t. zach tier
Not a big fan of the stitched photos, feels gimmicky for the sake of being gimmicky. But that might just be me. In general the images seem a bit unfocussed I feel. I can't really tell what the subject is in a few especially >>4313157 and >>4313159I like >>4313153 and >>4313149 a lot. Subject is clear and put into good context with them. >>4313165 is good, but you could have gone a bit clearer in the intent. Maybe a detail shot on the missing headlight, or contrast it with the modern car next to it. I like the colours, I like your use of black and white especially.
>>4313447>>4313666not trying to deflect criticism or anything but that guy's photos have absolutely nothing in common with what I doYou can still not like my photos, of course, but saying the photos I posted are similar to that guy's just makes me think you clearly have no idea what you're talking about>>4313478thanks, man>>4313579not even an elaborate ad hominem>>4313668thanks! I didn't post there but I remember seeing it, which is why I shot thisWanted to see if I could make a nice photo out of literal garbage, and I quite like it>>4313676thanks for taking the time and elaborating on your thoughts>Not a big fan of the stitched photos, feels gimmicky for the sake of being gimmickyI get it. In the B&W one I just wanted to get the whole truck and couldn't because of my lens' angle of view, so I thought it could work and found a way to fit it in a single imageThe color one was made later, very recently, so I did it more consciously. Not something that I would do for every photo, sure, but those two times I thought it was a mean to get the photo I wanted even though I wouldn't be able to do it with the gear I had at the time>In general the images seem a bit unfocussed I feelCan you tell me with which ones do you feel it the most? Again, not trying to deflect it. I'm actively asking for criticism, but maybe because of my familiarity with the photos I can't see where they're unfocused. They all look properly focused to me (except for the last one, of course)> I can't really tell what the subject is in a few especially >>4313157 (You) and >>4313159 (You)For the first one the subject is the building. It's a beautiful museum with a large open area under it; its project was made by Lina Bo Bardi, and it's a brutalist building called MASP (Museu de Arte de São Paulo, "São Paulo's Art Museum")>cont
>>4313712>>4313676I made this whole double film experiment and wanted to have the iconic red pillar on the underside of the photo along with the vivid scene of people strolling around in a pleasant sunny day, and the top part (where the building stands) in black and white, enforcing the cold grey colour of its concreteThe second photo needs a bit more context, I agree:The museum is going through a restoration processMASP's red pillars are some of the most iconic references in São Paulo (in Brazil; it's the biggest city in Latin America), and they're scraping off the paint in order to restore the buildingSo the pillars, which have been bright red since 1991, are now back to being grey as they were since the museum's inauguration in 1947Having it stripped off of its vivid colour and replaced by the coldness of harsh concrete feels weird and cold, and I wanted to balance it with the couple going up the stairsPicrel has a clearer view of the museum and the stairs and the grey pillar, and I like it but I think it lacks the human element of the couple going up the stairsThanks for the compliments on the other photos tooI agree the intent could be clearer with the fucked up old Fiat, it was maybe too descriptiveI was expecting that the car itself would 'tell a story' with the broken glass on the ground and the missing headlight, but maybe I could do more than just present it the way I found itCould have lowered the angle, showed a bit more glass, focus more on the damaged parts>I like the colours, I like your use of black and white especially. Thanks a lot, and thanks again for the careful response and for making me rethink my decisions. Sorry but these photos are very boring and depressing. I don’t know what shithole you live in but you’ve managed to not capture one nice looking thing.
>>4313742OP you have upset this person's eyes, and harmed his sensibilities. What say you?
>>4313776oh my, if I were to know how deeply displeased and unsatisfied that random person would be I would never have even taken the lens cap off in the first place, much less would have I taken those photographsno but seriously, I shoot what catches my attentionso, in short, I shoot what I find interesting, and not what is 'beautiful' or whateverand those interesting things can be aesthetically pleasing as well, and it's on me as a photographer to portray stuff in a certain light (and it can be pretty or it can be repulsive or whatever)The dent in the truck photos in the beginning of the thread, for example. It's a dent, it's not pretty, but it makes that truck different from the other ones, and in the context of the photograph I believe I managed to approach it in an aesthetically pleasing way: it has texture, an organic shape that at the same time is conflicting with the sense of 'indestructibility' of a gigantic truck like this one, and also complements its brute aspect>>4313742Only shooting conventionally pretty things to me is the equivalent to being a picky eater: it's childish, as if you didn't develop a proper palate, a proper sense of tasteShooting cats and flowers and little cottages at the hillside can be nice, but only being able to appreciate that is kinda like those kids who only eat candy, cereals and random shit with copious amounts of corn syrupPhotography is not meant to be always pretty, it's a medium to express yourselfYou can choose to express a wide range of emotions and impressions, or you can have a narrow and shallow approach of only showing beauty, which is not what I'm aiming for in the first place
>>4313787>no but seriously, I shoot what catches my attentionWell you must have ADHD>Photography is not meant to be always pretty, it's a medium to express yourselfWell express yourself man, but I am not seeing any intent with most of these. There is no composition, no playing with light and shadows, they are just photos of buildings probably taken at mid day.Funnily enough the only interesting photo is your self portrait>>4313173Because you did played with the light and tried some perspective. You wanted to be a /p/oster taking photos of building corners but unironically you might be better at taking portraits.
>>4313789>You wanted to be a /p/oster taking photos of building corners but unironically you might be better at taking portraits.kek I can live with that>no but seriously, I shoot what catches my attention>Well you must have ADHDI like shooting urban scenes and its transformations, and its workershence why there are so many photos of trucks and machines and people working and the restoration of the museum etc.>There is no composition>no playing with light and shadowsI truly don't take criticism personally, I believe it's great for improving, but would you elaborate on that please?because I'm honestly searching for some in-depth criticism so that I can think about it (and either incorporate that to my work or not, but at least think about it so that I make more conscious decisions in the future)But just saying "oh it's bad", "you didn't shoot pretty things" is null>picrel: pretty things
>>4313712By unfocused I mean that they're lacking a clear subject. I didn't even notice the couple to be honest. Try playing around with light in a scene to pull the viewers attention. In general we pay attention to the lightest parts of an image first. If you place your subject there, the viewer will naturally understand the context of what you're trying to show them. This is tough to do in wide shots, mostly because wide shots are just tougher to get right. The wider the shot the more other things are in the image to distract your viewer.
>>4313801thanks for the feedbackyeah, sometimes in wide shots it's tough to direct the viewer not only because there may be many things going on at once, but also because we have much less control over lightThe most I can do for some subjects is select the time of the day (and the season etc.) that I go to shoot itIf I can't control light, I'll pay more attention to "control the light" in terms of the way I frame it
