Does chickens eats ticks? Can they make my backyard safe for the kiddos?
>>
>>2733457
They can make it safer, but typically biological controls require other controls to be completely effective. I'd recommend getting ducks if you want to eat the eggs, or guineafowl if you want the most insect control per bird.

S-sisters there are no ticks in the water! send help

The truth to controling ticks is that they will only be in a place where they have food. I have tall grass in my backyard but I only get one or two ticks a year and that's because I set up a fence to keep deer out, starving the ticks. I also have a bunch of log piles for snakes to live in which keep the rodent population in control.
Poultry are helpful obviously but sometimes you need to attack the problem at the root.

All of those are so pretty. Do you know what breed laid those green eggs?
>>
>>2733584
Why do you recommend ducks for the eggs?
>>

NTA pic related

>>2736325
Because guineafowl only lay 100 eggs per year even though 90% of their diet is insects, while chickens can lay up to 300 eggs per year but the majority of their diet is not insects and they can destroy your garden. Ducks can lay up to 350 eggs per year and they will eat as many insects as they can. I really only meant to compare the guineafowl and the ducks, but if insect control is your primary goal then chickens wouldn't be my first choice.

No problem. I didn't realize there were so many duplicates in that image. Here's a better one, but it doesn't show the different shades from different breeds. You kind find a dozen more by searching "egg color chart" or something similar.

That's very helpful. I appreciate it.

No problem
