/cgl/ is a board for the following:

• Cosplay
• Lolita
• J-fashion
• Conventions & gatherings
• Sewing & prop-making
• Craftsmanship tools/materials & tutorials
• LARPing
• Discussing accessories such as wigs/circle lenses/prosthetics/makeup (These must be within the context of the board-related topics listed above; weight loss threads should be kept in /fit/, beauty and fashion generals should be kept in /fa/)

Our board rules are simple:

• Thread content must be related to one of the categories covered in the list above. Off-topic threads and replies will be deleted.
• Singling people out maliciously is not tolerated and will result in a ban. 4chan is not your personal army. The singling out rule applies to vendetta threads and replies being made to attack a specific person, as well as predatory behavior like doxing. Discussing an individual in general isn't against the rules as long as it's done within context of cosplay/lolita/j-fashion.

Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

Guys, how old is too old?

Like, I am an oldfag in his mid 40s. Used to be very involved in the con scene back in the 90s and early 00s. I am currently on a very nostalgic mood about those days of yore, and planning to visit a few of the big cons to see how's the fandom nowadays. Would I be, as you youngsters say, cringe? Worse, would other congoers immediately assume I am a creepy pedophile? I don't really want to ruin some kids con experience like that.

Two things, I would be attending alone because the few con buddies from back then that I still keep in contact, are too jaded and busy to give a shit. Also, I am considering if it is a good idea to go cosplaying as an old timer character.

Dude do what you want. I'm telling you because I'm insecure about my age, I'm about to turn 36 and I see the lines on my face growing and I'm full of regrets and a desire to go back and try again. But I still plan to go to cons, I realized now more than ever how short life is and how fast time goes by. Do what makes you happy so you have no regrets.

nayrt, I used to hand wash all of my lolita items but then started machine washing cheaper pieces (still cotton), even things with white lace and red and black in the print. That way I found out I can machine wash most of my pieces (I won't machine wash velveteen) as long as I choose the right temperature, program and put in a lot of color catchers for darker colors and reds. It has never resulted in permanent staining/bleeding for me. The worst I ever had to tackle was a black, white and red print with white lace that had probably never been washed before and had terribly yellowed lace. It was a bleeder so I had to wash it 3 times consecutively to make it behave. I went through a lot of color catchers though. The dress came out clean without fading and the lace was finally white.

I'm not saying what you're doing is wrong though. Whatever works for you is good.

>>10914731
I'll be honest, I also hate them all. They look way too aggressively modern to my eye, but it's your call. I would suggest probably dubbing and polishing your medieval shoes, and wearing proper wool stockings with them. And not standing in water. In the end, it's your decision and money.

Pic Are my 15th century boots, freshly dubbed with hot beeswax, before being polished. Watertight, and keeps them in good condition. Another good option is clogs for pattens for your medieval shoes.
>>
>>10914759
loving the finish on that wax bro
my 12th century boots are decently water resilient, its more that they are not so tight that mud and water starts to seep in, and they give little protection against debris and provide very little stability. my previous pair had similar issues, but anyways this has more to do with just how shitty the terrain and weather is during the spring/autumn campaigns. summer is fine.

idk this problem just never seems to go away from me, I go out in the woods determined to use all my articles, but I always end up using my modern hiking boots as soon as I get the others soggy :/

Did this get cancelled? It shows up on google reverse image search, but nothing in sold history for Meta or the sock category. I dunno if I'm looking in the wrong spot, but I know for Buyee it's possible to not pay if you disconnect your Paypal and remove credit cards. I've seen retarded teenagers post about doing that before, did that happen?

>>10915498
It's the buyers' fault for bidding up prices, look at the morons paying $200 for 3 pairs of socks. Why should a seller short themselves money?
>>
>>10913607
Actually there's a huge chance it's largely Chinese girls. Even during the 2020 sweet boom it was Chinese lolitas paying thousands for certain dresses, on LM you could see them bidding 2x more than westerners with the shittiest spending habits. I'm in a lolita adjacent hobby and over the past 6 months the price of items from a certain brand shot up from 3000 yen a piece to 25000-50000, with many going for more. You can see the poorer girls frothing on Xianyu and telling each other to hold out for low prices in the listing comments instead of buying from scalpers and showing old listings they bought for 2000 yen, amongst the sea of posts offering $250 for certain items. The brand isn't popular in the west, but I've seen a few stupid westerners cry about westerners jacking up the price when it's really not. It's really wild.
>>
>>10915549
I can believe this. I don’t think people fully appreciate how the buying power of the Chinese middle class has exploded over the past 15 years, and how the cost of manufacturing in China has skyrocketed. I see this disconnect all the time in fashion doll communities where people are constantly crying about how they can’t pay 2005 prices for their plastic crap. How bold of the Chinese to grow their economy and aspire to Western living standards kek.

>>10914437
Lmao this. There’s a dutch sweetfag who’s forever screeching on instagram to not support scalpers and to “wait for deals” and yet she has a massive wardrobe of old AP sweet and has openly admitted to overpaying for pieces. Many such cases. Gotta deter the competition somehow I guess.

What's the best community? If you could just magically wake up already living in the city with the comm of your choice, where would it be and why?

Are there any comms that you feel are too far gone and better left given up on to dissolve by their own internal squabbling?

>>10914978
there's nothing you can do about people in the comm who defend men with crossdressing fetishes. I mean you can leave the comm, or you can get to know people well enough so you can meet up privately, but those people and those guys are going to be at comm meets and online and you can't even try to do anything about it without being kicked out.
>>
>>10915057
See now that would be a sane decision, and nonnies above clearly haven’t taken their meds. I have no clue why people sperge out on the same topics of fat people and men/trans women in Lolita. It’s really not complicated. If you don’t like it, go somewhere else where your opinions are welcome.
>>
>>10915124
>sperge
Anon stop.
>>
>>10914745
I use it and no, it's a "stop beating yourself up because it's extremely unhealthy and won't help you lose weight or make you feel better about yourself, sometimes things just won't fit and you should look at options and clothes that make you happy now, instead of lamenting what you don't have." Even if I and many others were to lose weight, it doesn't mean we will be happier. It doesn't guarantee clothes will fit right. I could be 100 pounds and it still wouldn't change the fact that my shoulders are 40cm and I look horrible in any dress that requires having a flat chest. the "clothes should fit you not the other way around" is a good mentality for those who have always felt bad about their own sizing, shape, or awkward body proportions. It helps accept that brands don't HAVE to cater to us, and we don't HAVE to buy from them. Because they aren't MADE for us, and that's it. I'd love to be able to wear OPs, but blouse and skirt will always look the most flattering on me. Part of dressing well is knowing what will look good on you, and giving up or finding a solution to what won't.
>>
>>10915406

In the 2000s in Japan gothic lolita, sweet lolita and classic lolita were considered sub styles of lolita. It's literally explained in Japanese coverage of the topic from the early to mid 2000s. It's also mentioned on the old metamorphose website in the early 2000s.

Gothic lolita, or to be specific "gosurori", was also sometimes used, typically by beginners and outsiders, to refer to lolita in general. This too can be seen in the aforementioned media coverage.

I just really hate the attitude even mildly chubby people get here because it completely derails threads and attracts anachans. I don't care about alterations done well, I don't care about brands catering to "fatties" (thin ppl get ur clothing tailored like fat ppl have had to do for ages, it's actually easier for you too since you don't need extra fabric) and stfu. >>10910053
New meta is nice. A lot of their pieces are hit or miss for me since I'm kind of a basic bitch so I'll always be a whore for the same solid released for the 7000th time.

>>10914509
I've kind of given up on good collabs honestly. I can count on one had the number of good one's we've gotten. At this point I'd rather sew my own than see any brand butcher what I see as such a slam dunk success. That tulle lace looks scratchy.
>>
>>10915402
nayrt, but I also vastly prefer overweight and obese lolitas buying brand that was produced to cater to their size instead of them buying from the 2nd hand market and altering those pieces. The 2nd hand market is difficult enough as it is with increasing prices and decreasing amount of interesting pieces. Some sections of the market are worse than others. I cannot help but groan inwardly when a visibly overweight person says "I recently got into old school, I want to start building my wardrobe" because they're going to have a hard time and they're going to give the rest of us a hard time as well. Only thing I can do is point them in the direction of items they don't have to alter (fully shirred dresses, skirts with fully elasticated waists, shirred blouses) instead of things that they do have to alter.

I don't mind well done alterations as a concept, and I wouldn't mind them if there were plenty of nice pieces to go around. But we're all competing with each other for a decreasing amount of pieces and skyrocketing prices. The best thing we have going on is trades and inter community sales. Most people take good care of their stuff too. It's completely normal for someone to have a dress for 5 years, sell it within the community, the 2nd owner then enjoys if for a few years and sells it within the community, etc. I would hate for someone to break that cycle and make irreversible changes to these pieces. I know, I know, "dresses aren't community property". That is 100% true. But I have the right to be annoyed with people who make the 2nd market more difficult. "but what if it's a slim lolita who just lets that dress rot in her closet for 20 years and it never makes it way to the 2nd market",,, well, that's a false dichotomy.

I've never actually seen this with a real person. Obviously there's a line, touching or really inappropriate comments are a different story, but I know a bunch of girls who wear slutty costumes and I've virtually never heard a single one complain about ugly guys just looking or whatever, and the few exceptions were told more as jokes about really extreme cases, dudes visibly standing there with boners or really ridiculous looking dudes or whatever.

Pretty much every single person I've ever seen actually post or talk about "creepy" dudes staring at girls in skimpy costumes was a girl who doesn't actually wear skimpy costumes, some bulldyke who thinks it's her responsibility to protect all the other girls from the evil that is masculinity or fat/ugly girls who are just coping with jealousy or just straight up prudes who are uncomfortable with any kind of display of sexuality (my ex was one of those) or whatever.

If I recall correctly, velvet-esque fabrics like micro suede are notoriously hard to get wrinkles out of. I've heard of people using lots of steam and a needleboard or another piece of the same fabric on top in order to try and get the bumps out, but you might just be fucked. Maybe a wrinkle releaser could help?
That's my very much not a fabric expert guess.
>>
>>10914610
I agree with the other anon. Remember that a lot of clothing designs in anime are made by people who aren't fabric experts and do not have to bend to the laws of gravity or even a real figure dressing in and out of the clothing which is how we get Fantasy Nonsense Clothing. You probably won't find an exact replica of this type of clothing because it doesn't exist. Anon's suggestion of drafting your own lapel is likely your only way to get close to making that piece a reality.
