Let's just take a moment to appreciate the real estate agent who didn't try to frame the photo around the mold or crop it out of the picture.
That's someone who understands their job.

I mean, any buyer coming to see the house is going to see that shit anyway, so it doesn't make sense to waste time on someone who would walk away at the sight.

I've run into something like this in the wild. Except it wasn't an island. When you walked in the front door, directly to your right was a stretch of what should be just countertop but the range was right there smack in the middle. No cabinets overhead, nothing. Like you walk through the door and can set your keys in a pot of boiling water.

look at how the moldy area is sagging, and the hole at the bottom of the ramp it makes, the water supplying the mold is coming from above. Also the dried paint balloon running down the wall, this place had or still has a big leak.

In Edinburgh there is (was?) a house where the stairs were purposefully built uneven, so if someone unfamiliar with them was trying to go up during the night, they'd trip. Sort of a burglar alarm.
But I've only ever seen a pic or two, of this one fragment. So maybe it's just made up. But I still think about it sometimes.

Maybe that house is someone who really doesn't like getting bills in the mail?

OC from my house. We didn't notice until we poured the floor.
Originally it protruded about 2 cm on all sides, but I chiseled the edge to a slope you you don't stub your toe all the time, while at the same time not having a step with a drastic height difference.

You know how when you're rushing home to go to the bathroom, and the closer you get to your door the more urgently you have to go?
Well this person obviously didn't make it once, and lost it on the stairs outside their front door.
This is a logical solution to prevent that from happening again.

Enclose it, there is plenty of space for 3 cannabis plants with good dispersion. Make a passthrough in the wall for ducting pipe where one end at the top is creating a vacuum, put the channel blower downstairs in the basement or somewhere where it doesn't make noise. Prima Klima Carbocone filter for zero odor. That's a good 350-400 grams there with little effort, maybe over 600 with full hydro, though for ease of growing I'd just hook it up with an autopot system.

WHY IN THE HELL it was wired like that I have no idea because there is a separate earth wire already! But that got used as L3 instead!

Just had to replace my breaker box and the electrician that did it said it was the hardest box replacement he's ever done.

There were 9 completely unlabeled and randomly placed shared neutrals (one of which was 4 circuits sharing a neutral), 2 breakers had a pair of circuits run out from them that had to be separated (one of which was was also part of the mess of shared neutrals somehow), like all the grounding in the house (where it exists cause half the house was ungrounded 3 prongs with no GFCIs) was done through metal conduits so they all had to be bonded, there were 2 20A and a 30A breaker on circuits only rated for 15A, a 40A on a circuit rated for 30A, and a 15A on a circuit rated for 20A, the wire between the thermostat and the HVAC was run through the box for literally no reason so it had to be cut and reconnected during the install, and the box had to be replaced in the first place because it was some ancient frankenstein combination fuse and breaker box that nobody would ever insure where it uses breakers for everything but the main disconnect that was a fuckhuge quadruple fuse you had to manually rip out.

The new box has almost every breaker under a handle tie.

And they didn't even have to deal with the MULTIPLE uncapped live wires (one of which was just hanging down from the middle of the garage ceiling) and all the tangles of 3 to 5 wires connected with nothing but a twist, a gigantic glob of somehow still liquid rubber and some electrical tape elsewhere in the house I've found while doing 50+ outlet replacements (most of which I did before I even found out about the shared neutrals) among other shit (you can bet your ass a bunch of wires are the wrong color and I found every which way something can be incorrectly wired except ground to neutral).

Can an entire house be an abomination? I'm legitimately surprised this thing never caught fire. This shit was originally wired "professionally" ffs.

Don't know about that other anon who said it's not allowed to have a bathroom in a basement, but in many places, to add a bathroom you will need a construction permit, have plans reviewed by the city and have an inspector on site during and after construction. City taxes will then take into account the additional bathroom. It could also mean an increased insurance premium, and if you have a mortgage the bank might not be happy to hear that you have diy'd work without pulling permits. If the owner sold the house as is without having declared the additional bathroom, potential buyers will definitely notice the discrepancy. Retroactive permitting is often more expensive and might trigger a whole house value reassessment.

That's part of an in-wall extension cord/wall outlet relocation kit. It isn't a suicide cord and is explicitly allowed under NEC 400.10(A)(11).

It's a similar idea to extension cords you'll see mounted in book cases. Not everybody wants to install a new code compliant clock outlet somewhere awkward.
>>
>>2806025
>you've gained a little weight, man
>>
>>2806033
On a related note, if you've got any wall mounted book shelves and you aren't intimately familiar with them, either cause it's a new house or it's just a space you don't use that much, you should give them a once over for outlets/cords. I just recently found an outlet in the back of a record cabinet (noticed one of the slats had a cutout so it could be removed) below a bookshelf that had a brown cord connected to it that snaked up through a series of holes in shelves to a little triple outlet connected in the side of the magazine rack I never noticed before cause it was shoved up against the wall and behind a slight lip and the cord was in the back of a dark cabinet and stapled up against the walls and ceilings so it never stood out.

Unfortunately it's so old it only takes non-polarized plugs, so it's not gonna get much use.

>You can't just polarize it?
The thing's fucking ancient. If I'm gonna do anything with it but ignore it until I need that outlet for something it can't service, it's replace it with a power strip. I'm not sticking a new fucking female end on a fucking 60 year old extension cord to save a buck and some light drilling.

To be clear, by non-polarized, I mean it only has 2 tiny holes on the outlets on it, as in you literally can't stick polarized plugs into it because the neutral side is too fat.

>>2806102
>It isn't a suicide cord
It's literally just a fucking extension cord like the orange ones you have in your garage. That's the male end. The other end is female.

>>2806141
Yes, although they're used to hide cords so the other end is more likely to just be connected to the device's cord , not a second extension cord.

Like say you wanted to hang a screen near your ceiling between two outlets. Rather than running an extension cord to it in front of the wall, you install one end of that thing behind the tv, tuck the wires behind it, then install the other end near an outlet, and connect it to an outlet.

I cannot stress this enough, it's literally just a hidden extension cord. It only looks ridiculous cause you're seeing just one end.

>Couldn't be the worst of your problems if your house is over 60 years old anyway
Lolno. We're renovating the house to sell it and I've already almost died several times between the shoddy electrical work and the top step on the ladder to the attic snapping 2 of its 4 connections while I was standing on it and trying to twist me off it.

This was me
>>2805177

The worst problem is probably going to be the broken well, the basement flooding, or doing the floor in the room with the pool table that can't be disassembled without then needing a new slate.

>>2805723
>You didn't pick this shit up when you first inspected the domicile?
Inspected? The house was built for (and designed partially by) my grandfather. I doubt its ever undergone a professional top to bottom electrical inspection.

Unfortunately the family's had terrible luck with electricians.

The contractors working for the team that built it got caught installing 3 prong outlets without grounds in a bunch of rooms halfway through (and even after they were forced to start installing grounds put in 2 prongs over them just to be dicks) and seem to have fucked up a ton of other shit in the original build not even counting the standard corner cutting at the time under archaic regs. The electrician that redid one of the bathrooms after it had a problem had no god damn idea what he was doing and wired it wrong so the fan and heater both came on at once when either switch was flipped. The ones that redid the kitchen managed to disconnect the grounds from a circuit in there. An electrician that replaced a burned up outlet for my mother lied to her that the house would need a complete rewire to install GFCI outlets. The ones that installed the motion light out back left a live wire lying on the casing for ceiling light they stole power from. Live wire was hanging from the garage ceiling by somebody after a motion light there was removed. Oh, and the breaker directory was an absolute incomplete mess.
>>
>>2806395
Well, you haven't burned it down yet. Best of luck. How much longer?
>>
>>2803251

>>
>>2806447
>Well, you haven't burned it down yet.
If I had we'd probably get a better insurance payout than the house will sell for even after the renovation hilariously.
>How much longer?
As far as electrical jobs, we have to fix the well, rip out a couple loose wires, inspect the attic for any weird electrical nonsense (the house had powered roof vents at one point allegedly and I'd be shocked if any electrical work up there is in good condition let alone compliant with current code), install 8 GFCIs and 2 regular outlets, rewire the storage room, add some conduits to some 240V lines, install a new light fixture and replace 6 more, label some wrong colored wires, pretty up the breaker box, and replace the god damn buggy garage door button. On top of probably a couple months of other work.

Thankfully I'll have more professional help with some of this because I am so burnt out on this shit. I knew nothing about home wiring when I started working on this and so far I've had to replace 7 light switches, rewire 2, replace ~57 of the ~85 outlets in the house, rewire 3, rip out a motion light, replace 3 light fixtures, repair 2, remount 1, replace the bulbs in 2, rip out a loose wire, and I spent a period of hell figuring out what the fuck was going on with this fucking combination heater/vent/light fixture that was wired incorrectly, had nonsense wire colors, and had no circuit diagram. Found that afterwards in its housing and not only does it show the heater pilot light wired as a nightlight which it never was, but it doesn't show the wires between 2 of the 3 switches and the device so it would have been useless. As a bonus, the thing was on the exact opposite end of the house as the stairs, and the exact same end of the house as the breaker box in the basement. Every day is leg day.

Legitimately the house fire was probably the better option.

I'm doing all this shit for my mother and sister, not my wife. She's trying to get the house ready to sell so she and my sister can split the cash. I'm physically disabled (muscle control issues) and live off my parents' dime.

My mom said she could have the electrician deal with anything I don't feel comfortable doing, but when I said *I* had to do all that shit, I meant *I* had to do all that shit. My mother's project lead and helped me shop for parts and track shit, helped pry off a rusted on box cover, and helped me wire the fucking heater/fan/light thing after my fingers went numb working on it. My dad helped get a couple switches and outlets in cramped boxes and helped hold shit while I was working on some of the fixtures. My sister helped map the house's breakers and my mother helped doublecheck the new box. And my mom cut a couple holes bigger so I could get outlets in and both my parents helped drill holes in ~7 piece of junk ancient boxes that didn't have screw holes for grounding pigtails since I can't use power tools because the sound aggravates my pseudo seizures (which has made avoiding the other work in the house fun). Other than that I've been on my fucking own.
