What do you guys think of all the small/local farms and home gardens that are being shut down in the US and Europe?
>>
>>2731925
if they dont comply with regulations, then they get closed. If they comply with regulations it gets expensive. But the big companys are somehow able to survive, arnt they?
So in total, they need to step up their game if they wanna keep their farm, some middle aged farming techniques with old ass machines doesnt work today.
Same as jobs are being laid off because people dont wanna educate themself.
>dont educate yourself somewhere else.
Its easy being lazy and reap the same rewards as someone who does R&D.
Our whole land is contaminated with nitrate, it stinks everywhere, its bad for the soil in the long term as the bad parts of shit go deeper into our water thus why water treatment facilitys need to up their cleaning capacitys. Its like to clean up after yourself.
The planet is not yours, you cant do whatever you want, you can on a small scale as a hobby, but as soon you get money, there will be people watching.

Anyway, why are the small/local farms are being shut down from your point of view?
>>
>>2732096
>Anyway, why are the small/local farms are being shut down from your point of view?
Greed, of course. Possibly Agenda 21/30 conspiracy where they intend to prevent everyone from growing their own food so a large portion of the population dies of starvation while the rest is forced to eat bugs.

Your post is confusing, btw. You list these things big corpos do but get away with, then blame small farmers and hobby gardeners.
Organic small farmers (such as the Amish and others) don't use the synthetic fertilizers contaminating everything; they don't need to. Neither are they trying to cheat the system someway; people are simply willing to pay more for the health and quality of their products. Yet they are the ones getting targeted and forced to sell their land for cheap.
>>
>>2732096
>$1 shopping credit has been deposited to your monsanto-fanclub membership card
Small farms still feed more than half of the world population with much less land, industrial inputs and funding. They also keep the genetic diversity of our crops and domestic animals alive and are generally less harmful to soil, water and natural ecosystems.
Small farms have just been taken out to remove competition for agrochemical cooperations. All regulations and laws are written by their lobbyists. They are trying to even make exchanging your own seeds illegal ffs. You already need a loicense to sell seeds and it needs to be from registered variants. Supporting this is suicide on a civilization level.

>>
>>2732792
Yea but the antler should be in the antler room, not the bone room.

I'll be wild camping in a place on the border of mountain lion ranges but it's very common for them to wander into the area I'll be.

I'm not bringing any food since I plan to eat fish. So the only odor shit I'll have is toothpaste. So should I bring baking soda? Does that have any smell affect on mountain lions? I'm not going to be in grizzly country so mountain lions are the main concern.
9 replies and 1 image omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>2732383
Why bring toothpaste? Just use the brush, floss, and water if you are paranoid.
>>
>>2732383
black bears are a far bigger worry for smellables storage. I’m assuming there would be some because generally the ranges overlap. mountain lions do not give a fuck about our food, or us in general.

BUT i would not care at all about toothpaste. I never put that shit or my chapsticks or sunscreen or whatever other non-food smellables in a bear can or anything. preventing access to any smellables is really only an issue in places with serious bear problems, like campground in national parks in the sierras.
far more of a concern is any of your cooking/eating stuff that has fish smell, but again way more of a concern for bears than mountain lions.

ultimately I’ve never known anyone to take precautions for mountain lions, only bears.

yeah ok i know what you're up to

Why would you want other people to see you before you see them? That would make me very uncomfortable, like sitting at the very first table in the break room with your back to entrance. I don't own a single piece of clothing or gear that is any color except Earth brown, olive drab green, and stone grey. The whole point of going out in the woods is escaping humanity and becoming invisible and being left the fuck alone.

Last years (i think) at a trailer in florida. The roaches made fine fertilizer

Did you know that some tractor owners fill their tires with water or other fluids?
Filling tractor tires with water is a common practice in agriculture and certain industrial applications, serving various purposes.
This practice is prevalent in agricultural tractors used for tasks like plowing, planting, and harvesting, as well as in industrial tractors involved in material handling, construction, and other heavy-duty operations.

This isn’t news. Loaders regularly have rear tyres filled for extra counterweight.
More stable with a full bucket. Also rollers for more ground pressure.
Rims often have a 2” cap for easy filling.
>>
>>2731587
Sure, but it's not as effective as calcium chloride because it's not as dense. Rimgard is 11 lbs per gallon, calcium chloride is 17 pounds per gallon. in a context where you're going to be running the same set of tires for a long time, and you're not pushing the limits of the tractor anyways, rimguard is probably a great solution. But if you're wearing out tires more often than you replace your mattress, you're probably not going to have any corrosion issues with the calcium chloride solution either, and it will perform better.

Orienteering thread? Orienteering thread.

>What is orienteering?
Orienteering is a competitive sport that combines running with navigation. Participants use a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain, aiming to complete the course in the shortest possible time.
>What equipment do I need?
For a beginner, all you need are comfortable outdoor clothing and sturdy running or hiking shoes. Clubs often provide maps, compasses and short introduction courses for beginners.
>Do I have to run?
No, you don't have to run. Orienteering can be enjoyed at your own pace, whether you prefer walking, jogging, or running. Many people start with walking to familiarize themselves with map reading and navigation before increasing their speed.
>What if I don't know how to use a compass?
That's okay! Many beginner courses are designed to be navigated with minimal to no compass use. However, learning to use a compass is easy and orienteering is a great way to learn and practice compass skills.
>What if I don't want go to a meet or see other people?
Many permanent orienteering courses exist that can be ran outside an official meet. There are even apps like UsynligO that allow you to run virtual courses. See your local club's website for more info.
>>

Based response, though I have never seen oregano with such large leaves.
It's heuristics and that's difficult to convey to people- when you're IDing a new species it's important to base it on solid and consciously reasoned evidence, but there is also lots of value in unconscious pattern recognition, and when I have seen pros in any sort of ID that is 99% how they operate (though they can explain their reasoning when asked).
>>
>>2729757
>Definitely some kind of mint
That was my first thought.
>>
>>2729753
When I was younger I was really into plants. State champion FFA on nursery landscape, state champion on Plant ID FFA, state champion on timber stand improvement etc. Went to undergrad and didn't pursue something related to plants (a decision I regret every day). But I have a good job now- it's just not what I love.

Anyways, I moved back home about 10 years ago, blessed with property and woods.. it's a very rural place so I got back into plants. Stopped getting cable and all that, not many other people living around so I just spend all my time in the woods.

Spending that time just out there seeing the plants every day season after season year after year made me understand them in a way no book or key ever did. If you dont have a fascination with them they will never stick. Almost a form of autism. Like you see people's face in a crowd and you'd never recognize them but if you have some interest in them it might stick and be familiar. Opposite/alternate is always useful but when it really comes to ID'ing young or out of season plants there is no replacement for just "knowing" them. Each one has certain qualities aside from obvious characteristics... they like to grow in certain places, slight variations in color, do different things at different times of year etc. and I never made a list to ID these plants it's like recognizing a person's face. Every day for like a decade if I'd go in the woods and come across something I didn't know I'd take pics and go home and figure it out and after about the five year point I sort of got to where I can get 90% at first blush, and can put the other 10% in the right family for the most part. Every now and then I get stumped though and this area is sort of hard mode I mean there are a ton of species here.

But tbqh I miss the days of going in the woods and every day it was one I didn't know.. like sort of an adventure to figure them all out. Makes me a bit sad now that it's no longer that way. Sorry for TLDR

Do amish have guns? Seems pretty easy to solve if they can't use technology
>>
>>2732698
They do use technology. They use power tools, computers, the internet, everything. They just say it's "off grid" because they run it off a generator.
>>
>>2727225
Amish are great believers in incest, domestic violence/abuse and rape. They are based for keeping to their beliefs and ways as well as they have and these sorts of people/communities will survive upheaval. But like all other religious sects they devolve into the dark desires and power.
t. ex-amish, got a away thanks to my dad figuring things out, but I got abused and still feel confused about them
>>
>>2732698
They tend to be "protected", they are well known for their abuse and other fuckery and yet little is done about it.
And they do have guns, basic shotguns/rifles but no pistols. Most aren't keen on them and/or hunting but there'll be someone to balance them majority that does know and will shoot you.

Modernity is so goddamn gay, decades ago you could hitchhike easily and truckers would pick you up really fast, nowadays they aren't even legally allowed to pick you because laws, company policies and insurance garbage.
And this is just an example of many, as we move forward and as the population grows things get worse /out/ wise.

what? hitchhiking is still a thing here, no laws against it. if i can i will try to pick up hitchhikers when im on my roadtrips, they are usually international travelers and has lots of stories. once picked up a danish girl who had traveled all the way from denmark to north cape, norway and was heading home when i picked her up.
blew my mind when she told me east euro truckers, the kind you really dont want to deal with, they are batfucking crazy, drunk or on drugs, where here best and safest rides. they absolutely wouldnt touch her, no sexual harassment, nothing, just total protective bro-mode.
