Insecure 5'9" dude here. If you could only pick one martial art as a manlet for self-defense on da streetz (like a rando walks up and wants to beat the shit out of you) what would it be? The only gym near me offers either Muay Thai or BJJ

You can learn kickboxing and boxing at any age really. Grappling is Hella worse for your spine etc

>There seem to be a fair number of old men doing judo
Personally, I feel that getting thrown is often the least painful part of grappling when your partner isn't a retard and you know how to break a fall. In contrast, getting the life squeezed out of me in bottom half guard or nay pin always leaves me feeling like someone took a sledgehammer to my chest and back afterwards, and I'm hardly a geezer at 21

buy a gun
then train a striking and a grappling art
as well as start lifting
>>
>>196917
Bulk up to 180lbs of muscle and start doing Muay Thai. After 6 months of training you'll be able to beat up 90% of random guys on the street. After a couple of years you'll be able to pretty much beat up anybody who has trained less than you and isn't a 6'4 linebacker in the NFL.

not sure what you mean by this, but before /asp/ was overrun with wrestling threads the inline and bmx generals were almost as busy as /esg/ is nowadays.

I know the japanese tourism and animation industry have a lot to thank toriyama for, but something underrated is how much the martial arts industry has to thank him for
fact is it wouldn't be nearly as popular of a hobby as it is if this show never existed since it's the thing that inspired so many kids to get involved

so ITT we will discuss all things related to our training and self improvement and helping each other
exercises, training routines, diets, motivation, etc.

I got my pop down, now it looks my next thing I need to get better at is leveling. I slide my foot up the board then just fall right back down on the board. I recorded myself and saw the frame by frame, back foot is fine it’s just the front foot that’s not pushing it forward. I’m practicing stationary on a doormat, does the board level out easier when you’re moving?

I has job security because nobody had my skill set
So like for example I had a group with 20something 7-11 year Olds in it and I made them all stand in a line at the beginning and I said there's a lot of you in here and only one of me, so there won't be any warnings, if you don't listen you're out and that's it
Well 2 seconds later 2 boys are wrestling on the ground so they were made an example of and banished immediately

Then their affluent Karen moms complained to me about how its unfair and they bring there kids here specifically for class and they're working moms and they're just kids. And I said you know who else are kids? The 20 other ones in the room that listened to what I was saying
>>
>>195969

after analisys of over 300hours of video it was found that 96% of fights are only punching in the face/head

learning boxing is the most important skill for self defense

do not let anyone get close to you either, if you lose control of the distance atack first.

I personally love Krav Maga. Fundamental skills like punching and kicking are done as warm ups . From day one we did cardio. Other skills like knife and gun defenses were shown . Going to the ground and grappling was discouraged because in real life that's only good for one on one, not multiple attackers. Last of all Krav Maga is proven, as it's used by God's people the Israelis.
>>
>>192847
blades, knives, swords, and spears are the true weapons of warriors. Guns are good for distance fighting, but once you run out of ammo, you are defenseless against zombies.

>>196891
Funny enough Israeli style they don't carry a round in the chamber so there's a 0% chance these suckers would get a shot off in you by the time you are on them
>>
Not a martial artist, have been in 1 real fight and a couple "scraps" in the past. If I could have chose a background in grappling or striking right there, I would have chose grappling easy. If you're in a fight for your life striking might be more viable. But if you're in the typical drunk/high guy is mad about something and comes at you, people are yelling about calling the cops with their phones out, beating the crap out of the person is not on your mind. All I kept thinking was that if I rock this drunk jack ass in the face and he falls and cracks his skull on the curb, I might be charged with manslaughter. I can knock his teeth out right now but one of these dumb asses filming could edit it to look like I started it, and I get taken in for assault.

It was a lot easier to yank him to the ground and pin him till the cops came and arrested him. I am decently in shape now, but was not at the time, thankfully the guy was off his rocker and had downed 20 beers in a few hours while I was sober DD

The issue I'd see with grappling is if you're in an unfair fight against multiple people really trying to kill you. I'm sure an experienced BJJ guy could handle 2 drunk guys. 2 muggers with a knife is questionable. You pin one guy while the other shanks you in the kidney?
And that really goes into why fighting back isn't the best form of self defence. Cardio is, lol. Better to outrun the 2 guys with knives than try and properly box them

It's annoying how difficult it is to just refer to FMA by one name. The way I make sense of it all is most Northern FMA practioners call it Arnis. Practittioners from Visayas, Cebu, and Mindano will mostly call it Escrima, Then there is another group who will insist on calling it Kali because Escrima and Arnis are derived from spanish terms for fencing Escgrima and Arnis de Mano.

Yaw Yan is not a traditional Filipino Martial Art.. It's a modern hybrid creation like how Jeet Kune Do and American Kempo were created . In many ways it's much more of a brand, just by examining the name of it Yaw Yan means "The Dance of Death" It looks fun, and I see many of techniques do look effective, but it's a commercialized school practiced in westernized gyms. it's not traditional like the FMA which uses sticks, spears, wooden shields, swords, and knives

How do y’all feel about the indisputable fact that LARP groups produce the most technical stick fighters in America
>>196796
>>
>>196882
The competitive FMA scene in CONUS isn't that big so some of the more athletic LARP groups end up being solid places to pressure test certain techniques against a larger pool of fighters on a more regular basis. Some of the more serious stickdorks do study FMA (and other disciplines) and apply that to their sport so it's definitely not a one-way exchange. Each format makes different compromises but short of actually killing your opponent with your baston you're going to have to sacrifice some realism for some partner safety.
