Geocaching is what started making me go /out/side. Does anyone else still do it? I bring a mountain bike and head to trails.
>>2724238>Does anyone else still do it?stopped when smart phones became a thingthe whole point of a geocache was printing off the 3 or 4 lines of cryptic text and going innawoods with that piece of paper and solving the puzzlenow every single one has a Google Map pin, GPS co-ordinates, multiple Youtube tutorials and 15 zoomers TikTok Twerking in front of it with their phones out. not to mention last i checked Geocache website now requires a monthly subscription

>>2732656Yea quilt would be shit without a insulated pad, I wouldn't use it then. But the quilt is much more like blankets at home in bed and offer more flexibility because you can partially cover yourself if it's warmer.500 fill power is ass for that price. You could probably get something made in the us with 750-800 for that price. The thing I don't like about sleeping bags is constriction. I side sleep so quilt all day. I have sleeping bags too, just prefer the quilt.I don't remember the exact formula but it should be online somewhere. The know area of a quilt (length * width) can be used to estimate the fill power by measuring the thickness when fully lofted and vice versa. So use that to determine if you're actually getting what you're paying for
>>2721180They're nice.I had helinox cot loaner from a friend and it was comfy, very light too, no need to worry about sharp rocks or anything else for that matter to poke you in the back or puncture your mat.
>>2729499Checked and same, tent is the only way I can sleep without worrying some little mega-aids cunt biting me.Also last time I used a hammock there was a frog in my boot.
>>2732558>Increase surface area so you have more area to lose heat>Heavier for the same insulation because the surface area that needs to be insulated is greater>Going to have more cold spots because it's a more complicated shape>Less volume inside the bag means you don't start warming up stale air A meme unless you want to do warm-up exercises repeatedly to maintain warmth.

So /out/... I'm from out west and wanted to explore the eastlands. I went down the Pennsylvania rabbit hole and discovered the entire northern part of Pennsylvania is known as the "PA WILDS" and is more sparsely populated than Mongolia. I'm now dying to check it out. What can I expect if I try to wild hike through the whole region. Any concerns beyond getting lost and dying? Why is this region so fucking mysterious?

It's been almost a year since the last climbing thread on /out/ died. The thread on /xs/ is overwhelmingly focused on gym climbing, so I'm making this attempt to revive the general. Help out by sharing trip reports, photos, advice, etc.A place to talk about outdoor climbing in any aspect (trad, sport, bouldering, aid, alpine, etc).Rock Climbing is a dangerous sport that can cause loss of life, limb, eyesight, or sanity.Off-belay:https://archived.moe/out/thread/2610900https://archived.moe/out/thread/2537031https://archived.moe/out/thread/2495558/xs/ thread:>>>/xs/196297Adam Ondra sends world's hardest trad route Bon Voyage: https://youtu.be/ji4At78H5Ys
>>2728674I tried half ropes on a meandering slab and it doubled the rope drag. I'm guessing that's why American trad is mostly on singles, because we have the slabs.
>>2731765Ah yeah I've done that one. I'm no hardman but it's a pretty easy solo when it's dry; not even 5.5.I've never been to Waikiki with a rope but I've always wanted to. That anchor looks simultaneously bomber and sketch as fuck.
Recently recleaned this near-forgotten problem to project. Super-nice rock, over the bulge with no real holds, just friction.
Fuck yeah, climbing general, it's been too long.So far this season at the Gunks has been great. Been pushing grades way beyond what I'd hoped for and having a ton of fun cruising up routes that were a challenge just a couple years ago.Looking forward to ticking off all the classic 5.8-5.9's and testing myself on the 10's where it really starts to get interesting.Any NE anons want to get after it hit me up.
>>2732859That's awesome man. Post some pictures! I've found that I'm actually climbing weaker than I was a couple of years ago. Not a huge surprise since life has been kicking my ass recently, but still disappointing. I'm gonna have to get back on the hangboard.
Anyone got any experience with bivvy bags? I'm looking into buying one on the cheaper end. There's tyvek ultralight bags, there's heavier ones, weight isn't a huge concern for me personally but I like light stuff if it's reasonably durable. Rain and mosquitoes are my primary concerns, I'd like a face cover of some kind
>>2729024In NZ we carry them in case we’re caught out unexpectedly. They’re uncomfortable af, but better than a night in the rain or snow. 99% of the time it’s a night in a back country hut with a fire. Rare to see anyone except on the most popular walks.
>>2726610the only thing a bivy bag is good for is sparing some poor EMS worker the trouble of stuffing your bloated carcass into a body bag because it's already inside one
>>2731880This, bivvys are very dangerous. My uncle used one in the rain and he didn't know that waterproof meant not waterproof; he drowned
>>2726610US MILITARY BIVVYS"SLEEPING SYSTEM"OMG. i dont camp regularly now but me and an old friend scored under 50$ bivvy sacks easily.as we tested them out, we realized they were OP as FUCKK - goretex, camo, 0 condensation, rough, easy to stuff in pack. rain tested and completely viable. I took it far and camped on the california coast with them without any sleeping bag - i just had an emergency blanket and a pad - i got SO DAMN COLD but it was survivable. also that night there were dozens of mice that bit at the bag and the open area at the top. i forget if i needed it to be open in order to breathe better or w/e. i cant remember, sorry. but yeah, in full rain you can take these out and hop in with your bag and pad and not be worried in teh slightest.

What do you guys think of all the small/local farms and home gardens that are being shut down in the US and Europe?
>>2731925if they dont comply with regulations, then they get closed. If they comply with regulations it gets expensive. But the big companys are somehow able to survive, arnt they? So in total, they need to step up their game if they wanna keep their farm, some middle aged farming techniques with old ass machines doesnt work today.Same as jobs are being laid off because people dont wanna educate themself.>dont educate yourself somewhere else. Its easy being lazy and reap the same rewards as someone who does R&D.Our whole land is contaminated with nitrate, it stinks everywhere, its bad for the soil in the long term as the bad parts of shit go deeper into our water thus why water treatment facilitys need to up their cleaning capacitys. Its like to clean up after yourself. The planet is not yours, you cant do whatever you want, you can on a small scale as a hobby, but as soon you get money, there will be people watching.Anyway, why are the small/local farms are being shut down from your point of view?
>>2732096>Anyway, why are the small/local farms are being shut down from your point of view?Greed, of course. Possibly Agenda 21/30 conspiracy where they intend to prevent everyone from growing their own food so a large portion of the population dies of starvation while the rest is forced to eat bugs.Your post is confusing, btw. You list these things big corpos do but get away with, then blame small farmers and hobby gardeners.Organic small farmers (such as the Amish and others) don't use the synthetic fertilizers contaminating everything; they don't need to. Neither are they trying to cheat the system someway; people are simply willing to pay more for the health and quality of their products. Yet they are the ones getting targeted and forced to sell their land for cheap.
>>2732096>$1 shopping credit has been deposited to your monsanto-fanclub membership cardSmall farms still feed more than half of the world population with much less land, industrial inputs and funding. They also keep the genetic diversity of our crops and domestic animals alive and are generally less harmful to soil, water and natural ecosystems. Small farms have just been taken out to remove competition for agrochemical cooperations. All regulations and laws are written by their lobbyists. They are trying to even make exchanging your own seeds illegal ffs. You already need a loicense to sell seeds and it needs to be from registered variants. Supporting this is suicide on a civilization level.

Why would you want other people to see you before you see them? That would make me very uncomfortable, like sitting at the very first table in the break room with your back to entrance. I don't own a single piece of clothing or gear that is any color except Earth brown, olive drab green, and stone grey. The whole point of going out in the woods is escaping humanity and becoming invisible and being left the fuck alone.
