Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the fifth volume of Ranma 1/2. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything Ranma 1/2 related after the dump.

Previous thread: >>265714463

Despite the OP image, I am using the latest Viz localization which does not feature this cover exactly as it is a 2-in-1 edition. Due to image limits, I will be dumping chapters by original volume. Be aware that some of the larger images have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
>>
Volume 5. The Volume where everything goes downhill.
>>
Here's the cover for the 2-and-1 cover. Obviously matches the original.
>>
This is a fun chapter cover in the context of the story.

April 27th, 1988. Author's note: "The next issue will be a double feature. The fourth work in the Mermaid series. Please read the book and prepare for it."
>>
>>265834607
This chapter hits the ground running in an unusual way.
>>
>>265834649
Everyone's favorite creep.
>>
>>265834555
>triple fives
Yeah we're fucked. Sorry OP
>>
>>265834668
Gosunkugi apparently became a bigger part in the anime. I like his role in the manga, but I can see it being a bit much if he's around all the time.
>>
>>265834741
Not a crime (probably a crime).
>>
>>265834770
Furinkan usually has a note whenever this ritual is referenced but it isn't here this time for some reason. It is called the "ushi no toki mairi" or the "ox-hour shrine-visit". It is intended to lay a curse on target (represented by the straw effigy). Ranma's has his pigtail, which is fun. It is normally done around 1-3 AM. Anyway, this tendency I think got exaggerated in the anime.
>>
>>265834929
Ranma's friendly classmates appear to not have changed. Still our Saotome/Koisuke lookalike and the glasses guy.
>>
>>265834512
Yo, OP. Catgirl Ranma best Ranma.
>>
>>265834958
Joining forces?

>>265834697
>>265834555
I think I get what you're referring to, but while the change is a bit stark, I do think Ranma is still pretty good throughout.
>>
>>265834649
This feels oddly pornographic with the face censors
>>
>>265835015
Negotiations were brief.

>>265834984
It is a popular look.
>>
>>265835051
Close enough, right Soun?

>>265835017
Definitely part of the voyeur aspect. Though I don't know how it actually relates.
>>
>>265835110
Hence the cover (appears to be another shot of his). I love this.
>>
>>265835140
Honestly, these chapters are full of wonderful gags because the players involved are insane.
>>
>>265835184
I thought these were rubber, but the frog gives a sideeye on this page and on the next, the snake hisses so this is pretty intense. Gotta love the earthworm with the goofy eye. And a random starfish.
>>
>>265835226
Hisss.
>>
>>265835252
I don't think is Gosunkugi's only Scream pose (Edvard Munch).
>>
>>265835341
End of chapter. Apparently, VIZ couldn't translate whatever that sign says.
>>
This issue also had another part of Mermaid Saga in it ("Dream's End").

May 4th, 1988. Author's note: "A: After this chapter staff member Nakano-san becomes independent. Thank you for your long period of hard work."

I tried my best to figure out who she is referring to. Based on this, I assumed it was one of her long term assistants, but I can't seem to find who this is. Doesn't help that Nakano is apparently a ward in Tokyo Rumiko lived in.
>>
>>265835686
>>
>>265835817
Cool sweater.
>>
>>265835833
More untranslated sides.
>>
>>265835925
Bit of phonetic accent with "minnit". Which as far as I know, is pronounced the same way as minute.
>>
>>265836010
Hah, P-chan.
>>
>>265836043
>>
>>265836065
>>
>>265836097
Nabiki's particularly exaggerated laugh adds a fun bit of variety. Also, man, lotuses show up a lot in these sorts of panels.
>>
>>265836135
>>
>>265836151
So tubby.
>>
>>265836173
Secret revealed! Gotta love the over the top crying. Soun lives an interesting life.
>>
>>265834741
>Gosunkugi apparently became a bigger part in the anime.
Honestly I feel it's the reverse. Sasuke takes up a lot of the roles he plays in future arcs, partially because the anime introduced him so late.
>>
>>265836207
Cat-fist being a translation of "nekoken". "Ken" is "fist" but is often used to mean "attack" in martial arts stories. This is good translation nonetheless.

And yes, Genma is insane.
>>
>>265836312
Hmmm.
>>
>>265836385
Where did they get all these? Also, I love the big ones Kasumi has.

>>265836265
I will admit, I'm not very versed in the anime obviously.
>>
>>265835140
One of my favorite gags
>>
>>265836427
End of chapter! I love how she gave him cat eyes here.
>>
This cover is largely unrelated to the chapter. I think Rumiko just liked this qipao design (or cheongsam, I never knew the difference).

May 11th, 1988. Author's note: "A: Managed to survive GW Progress. I'm looking forward to the Hanshin Tigers match at the Tokyo Dome in mid-May."

No clue what GW Progress refers to. Sorry. Based on context, it would be a sporting event, but it could be anything really.
>>
>>265836610
One of those kendo guys has an unusual form.
>>
>>265836668
See, the cover outfit shows up. For this.
>>
>>265836704
Oh no! Akane!
>>
>>265836719
I love that this "plan" ostensibly worked.
>>
>>265836749
Akane got chibi face here.
>>
It's over. OP has fallen.
>>
>>265836772
A lot more untranslated stuff. So, Tanuki tend to have stuff written on their tokkuri (sake decanter) and passbook, but it isn't always these characters. At least at a glance. I also have no idea what the bottom box says.
>>
>>265836961
I love how ominous this is. Those are not the usual eyes Rumiko draws for cats.

>>265836942
Sorry, I was researching the tanuki statues to try to figure out what the kanji said.
>>
>>265836999
What's this? Also, kitties.
>>
>>265837089
Bleep blorp. It conveys the idea well enough, but it is so odd that I can't help but be curious what it originally was. Also, this chapter is full of great moments.
>>
>>265836999
It's no big deal OP, I was just poking a little fun.
>>
>>265837133
Aw, they like him. Also, whenever animals do a reaction shot like a biped, it makes me laugh. Like most of the cats are reacting normally, but two are just being tiny people.
>>
>>265837182
Yeah, that probably wasn't the easiest to get and transport.

>>265837141
I sometimes get lost trying to find explanations for stuff. It is always the worst when I end up taking a while and still don't have an adequate answer. I managed to draw the kanji on the Tanuki's bottle and it apparently means "sprinkle" or "spill", which... doesn't really make much sense honestly. I could not draw the kanji on the passbook.
>>
>>265837240
I specifically thought of this page when we talked about how unusual it was for Kasumi to be voicing dissent early on. By now, I guess she's used to everyone being crazy. This page is tremendously funny child abuse.
>>
>>265837276
Aw, poor kitties. They're innocent!
>>
>>265837312
Akane's really cute here.
>>
>>265837312
Look at that neck! That tiger is built as hell.
>>
>>265837345
End of chapter. Uh oh.
>>
>>265836207
titty!
>>
I forgot to check the titles like I do sometimes. The last chapter was 猫地獄への招待, which apparently means "An Invitation to Cat Hell". I guess VIZ thought it was too wordy. While this one is 猫拳パニック, as in Cat Fist Panic (Neko-ken panikku). VIZ sometimes translates cat fist into Cat-Fu. Get it? Kung Fu? Cat Fu?

May 18th, 1988. Author's note: "A: Thanks to you the book Mermaid Forest is popular. As the author I am also very happy."

Mermaid Forest (which nowadays we call Mermaid Saga in English) is wonderful.
>>
>>265837496
This is obviously a reference to the "maneki-neko" or beckoning cat. These are actually Japanese, but they are pretty popular in Chinese communities so we often think they're of Chinese origin.
>>
>>265837575
Cat geyser.
>>
>>265837605
No sane people involved in this arc. Kuno operates at a different level. Also, "holy cats", good job VIZ. You think it was like this in Japanese?
>>
>>265837629
More motion circles.
>>
>>265837656
Blinding speed.
>>
>>265837699
The power levels are pretty high.
>>
>>265837738
:3
>>
>>265837756
That second panel shouldn't be this cute.
>>
>>265837771
What is Genma's sack for?
>>
>>265837817
That's a lot of catnip. Cats can't overdose, but they might puke if they eat too much.
>>
>>265837276
Respect for not just copypasting the cats.
>>
>>265837887
I guess the bow is just to make up for Ranma's speed.
>>
>>265837950

>>265838016

Pretty cover.

May 25th, 1988. Author's note: "A: Thank you very much for the many applications for a new assistant. For the time being I'll cut it off."

Oh hi!

>>265838082

>>265838149
I don't know why this was chosen as their entrance. I guess Ryoga just followed Gosunkugi under.

Everyone's mad!
>>

I wonder what Gosunkugi contributed to the beating.

So today is worst duck's entrance with Ranma being brutal to Akane (as usual)?

Cuties!

>>265838322

He's not a duck until his second appearance.

It was Shampoo! Here's a bit from a manga extra where Takahashi discusses Shampoo:

"Q: Shampoo’s cat form is cute.

Takahashi: My childhood love of Osamu Tezuka’s Wonder 3 probably played a role in that. That story was about a rabbit, a duck, and a horse, but still, seeing such cute animals going on adventures the way they did was so thrilling as a child. I think the effect that show had on me is the main reason Shampoo ended up a cat.

Q: And Ranma’s fear of cats makes the situation even better.

Takahashi: Well, the reveal comes right after that story that introduces Ranma’s fear of cats, so there really wasn’t any other choice, was there?"
>>
>>265838608
>>
>>265838631
End of chapter. Eep. And I guess Shampoo figured it out that it wasn't just a disguise because of her experiences in China and seeing how the water affected Ranma?
>>
Seems like this title (シャンプー再来日) translates more to "Shampoo Returns to Japan", but I guess it is a bit dull.

June 1st, 1988. Author's note: "A: I'd like to go to the Tohoku region but my schedule makes it inconvenient."
>>
>>265838565
>>265838608
I like how she gave it progression in the Jewsenkyo stuff... and then she reused it shamelessly for Mousse .... while reusing notes of Kyoko (CAT)'s design from Maison Ikkoku

>>265838631
>>265838671
Ramna please, are you sure you are straight?

>IESLB
>>
>>265838756
So you think Ranma was just busting stuff while he was brainstorming his plan or what?
>>
>>265838808
She may not be very honest here.

>>265838740
I mean, he did react. Who knows what could've happened...
>>
>>265838873
Ranma grumpily adjusting her belt while flying is pretty cute.
>>
>>265838756
>So my fiance got mad with me because she found me in the bathtub with another woman. Frankly I didn't understand a word she said, so I smacked her and that was it
The second panel is gold still.

Punnier. The original title (ムース襲来) translates just to Mousse Attacks.

June 8th, 1988. Author's note: "A: I saw Hanshin vs the Giants at the Tokyo Dome. I was very happy Hanshin won."

Rumiko Takahashi is a huge Hanshin Tigers fan and has done illustrations and little celebratory manga related to them over the years.

Furinkan has a note here about the glasses. Which I think isn't really necessary, but here: "Swirling glasses - The reason glasses are shown to have spirals in them in Japan is because of the term "bottle bottom glasses" (瓶底眼鏡). The glasses are said to look like the "bottom of a cow milk bottle" (牛乳瓶の底)."

I mean, bottle glasses is a thing in English too.
>>
>>265839698
I believe Mousse's name is like Shampoo's, in that it uses Chinese characters to sound like English words. I don't know if his name is particularly Chinese sounding though.

End of chapter. Cat's tongue thing is an expression in Japan specifically for sensitivity to heat well, on your tongue. Nekojita (猫舌) refers to people who don't do hot drinks, usually.
>>
>>265839947
Man I feel so bad for mousse. He's easily the least dickish of the rivals but he gets shit on the worst. At least ryoga gets a potty girlfriend at the end.
>>
The original title (格闘演芸会) appears to translate to Combat Performance or something like that. This is close enough. Also, I believe Ranma is intended to look like a sukeban with the sarashi (chest wrap).

June 15th, 1988. Author's note: "A: It was only for one night, but I travelled to a rural area of the Tohoku region. I want to go back one day."

Hey, she made it.
>>
>>265839989
>Because no marry Xiang-Pu would be my guess
Make sense
>>
>>265840313
Cool, a nice big double spread.

>>265840276
At least these random girls think he's cute. There's some trivia that may explain why Mousse gets the short end of the stick, but I think it is pretty clear as we go through the series.
>>
>>265840244
>Those bedrooms eyes
Umm... Akane?
>>
>>265840368
I can't help but wonder why Ranma can't get some hot water on him and suffer through the pain with a fan or something rather than cold water. Like I feel he has had basically boiling water poured on him before. Or maybe his pressure point is messing with how his curse works? I don't know.
>>
>>265840451
I wonder when her actual name is stated in the manga.

I'm just gonna post these manga extras and tidbits and remove the "spoilery" stuff. Rumiko said the following on twitter on October 3rd, 2021:

"I wanted to introduce a hidden weapon master. Because he was going to be using hidden weapons he should have long hair and loose fitting clothing.
It is the classic concept- a nearsighted person who takes off their glasses and he is that "handsome boy hidden behind thick glasses"."

And this in a manga extra:

"Q: Mousse is one of the rare characters who uses weapons…concealed ones no less!

Takahashi: If we are talking weapons, Kuno has his wooden sword, and Kodachi her rhythmic gymnastics equipment. It’s not as if no one uses weapons. It’s just that, instead of someone who specializes in a certain kind of weapon, I thought I’d like to try a character who just uses a bunch of things. When I asked a martial artist about the use of concealed weapons, he said it would be a cowardly act. Because of course it would. At that point I knew that’s the kind of character I needed. It’s easy to attach a personality to cowardice, and someone like that would be willing to do anything in battle to win, which would create some really silly moments.

Q: He sure does use a lot of weird weapons.

Takahashi: Just like the weapons I had Shampoo use when she first appeared, I threw in some real Chinese weapons from the book I had into the mix as well."

Is this when female ramna gets red hair officially?
>>
>>265840719
To think, Ranma was objecting to wearing a gymnast leotard only a bit ago.
>>
>>265840741
>>
>>265840774
Oh hey, it is Dr. Tofu. Say hello everyone.

>>265840731
Well, next volume cover female Ranma has pink hair, then the next one after that, she has brown hair and then back to black hair. As far as I know, it was always black on colored manga pages too. So, I wouldn't say that.
>>
>>265840801
A lot of people think that female Ranma is actually weaker than male Ranma (I guess because of some stats thrown around and applying some sort of realism regarding weight and musculature despite everything else in this series), but as far as I can tell, this gag about Ranma's female form having shorter limbs is the only thing in the manga that implies a disadvantage and it comes down to not planning for it.
>>
>>265840868
End of chapter. In case the Genma wasn't clear.
>>
>>265840801
Pretty sure this arc is tofu's last appearance in the manga.
>>
The original title (猫舌やぶり) appears to be "Defying Cat's Tongue" or "Escaping Cat's Tongue". Though DeepL said "cat burglary", which was... interesting. This cover is obviously cool but what's funny to me is that I don't think Ranma wears this specific outfit in this (ie. martial arts pants and no top).

June 22nd, 1988. Author's note: "A: I went to Ise Shima and ate at a seaside restaurant that had superb seafood." And yes, this chapter originally had four pages of red tint.

Takahashi in a random manga extra about a different character:

"Q: Because at the end of the day, Ranma’s a pretty cool guy.

Takahashi: On the surface, anyway. He can usually accomplish what he sets his mind to, which is a lot more than I could ever say about Ataru in Urusei Yatsura. But of course that was one goal of mine with Ranma. I wanted to write a manga where the male lead was properly cool."
>>
>>265841424
End of chapter. Man, the pressure point stuff never made much sense at all.
>>
>>265840868
It's also weight. It's why most martial arts are sorted by weight classes. Two people of equal strength by different weight and height take blows differently. Having shorter limbs is a detriment.

At the top class though, the difference while noticeable between males and women is small. A lot smaller than people realize.

So, from here on out, the whole "Ranma having two forms" thing isn't really a secret. The exact mechanics are probably not known to the student body, but they know that these two are the same person. I remember reading this and flipping back to the last chapter to see if I missed something, but I didn't. There was no real "big reveal" moment. This is also around where I feel the series stops going in as dramatic a direction as a whole. Takahashi mentioned in interviews that early on she felt editorial pressure to be dramatic, but it didn't turn out that way.

"Takahashi: In the case of Ranma 1/2 I was told by the editor to make it more dramatic at the beginning. But that was just not something I could do (laughs)."

So, we still have multichapter stuff much more often which sets it apart from Urusei Yatsura, but the tension from the earlier Ranma stuff won't be as focused on. Both with the identity stuff (which stops being a thing entirely) and the romance stuff (which gets less dramatic in some ways).

>>265841509
I mentioned weight! But I do find it funny for people to try to apply realism when Ranma shredded a gymnasium into paper with air strikes before.
>>
>>265841696
Okay, I said the identity stuff stops being a thing entirely and then I remembered another plotline and I need to amend my statement. It stops being a thing as much. It still gets used in some capacity.

Also, Takahashi goes really goofy with Ranma's cat freakouts.

More untranslated text. Admittedly, some of them look really hard to read. Also, yeah, the noodle shop is called the Cat Cafe in English translations. It is apparently 猫飯店 in Japanese. Neko hanten. Hanten appears to mean restaurant, store, etc. But close enough and the alliteration is fun.

Also, that's not appropriate, Shampoo.

"Rumiko Takahashi: Since Shampoo is from a female-only tribe, the only strong, elderly person I can think of is an old lady-type. In my imagination, she is like a strong old lady in a Jackie Chan movie.

Mousse rudely called [her] a "ghoul" and a "dried up monkey," but it was surprisingly fun to come up with the insults!"

This technique was called 火中天津甘栗拳 which apparently translates to "Fire Tenshin chestnut fist" or "Tianjin Chestnut fist in the Fire" according to DeepL. So, Tianjin is a city in China and Tenshin is Japanese for transformation, but again, I don't speak Japanese and I have no real clue. Fan sources often have bad translation (kind of like what I am doing here), so I feel like I can't trust them.

Anyway, VIZ made it a reference to the classic Christmas song apparently called "The Christmas Song" (I am not kidding) from 1945. I don't hate this translation. It is appropriate.
>>
>>265842351
End of chapter. It was nice to share this information. Also, Furinkan said this: "The "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" technique is called "Kachu Tenshin Amaguriken" (火中天津甘栗拳) in Japanese. A literal translation would be "Heavenly Roasting Chestnut Fist" due to the training method needed to master the skill. The English translation comes from the famous Nat King Cole holiday tune, The Christmas Song." I don't know why they included this in the notes of the next chapter and not this one.
>>
>>265842351
>火中天津甘栗拳

This is such a cute and goofy cover. Anyway, the title in Japanese was obviously not this. It was 夜店でバトル, which is apparently Battle at Night Stalls, like the ones at a festival or fair.

July 6th, 1988. Author's note: "A: I watched Chang vs Ohashi's world boxing match. In the world boxing matches that I attend, the Japanese fighters always lose, why?"

I think surprisingly for a '90s translation, the English anime dub actually just kept it (and the other attack names) in Japanese when actually being used in combat, even though it used Chestnuts Roasting a few times to refer to the technique in general. I've always wondered WHY the anime added Sasuke and rewrote Gosunkugi into a final season transfer student. I mean, I don't Gosunkugi really adds much to the story, whilst Sasuke has a fun dynamic as Kuno's bumbling ninja minion who's also the closest thing the Kunos have to a voice of sanity, but even so, it's a very weird decision to uproot one character and replace him with an entirely different one!

We never see Shampoo's dad in the anime, and he only gets one more appearance in the manga, in one of the panels during Ranma's first duel with Mousse, so he's one of the great mystery characters of the series. But, funnily enough, there was a sidescrolling beat 'em up game for Ranma 1/2, and Shampoo's dad was the final boss of it, and he was the hardest damn sumbitch in the game, spamming fireballs and multiplying into three independent clones as you ground his health down.

Also, something to consider: Nabiki outright says that the lingerie she sticks Ranma in the anime version is hers. We never see her wearing it in the anime, but... well, that's gotta be a little awkward for Ranma. And yet, I think Nabiki would look good in it, don't you?

>>265842351
>>265842393
I've seen a lot of arguments that technically, what Cologne gives Ranma isn't so much a technique with the Amaguriken as a training method, and that it's the anime's fault for imprinting the idea that "Kachu Tenshin Amaguriken" is a specific named "flurry of fisticuffs" move, as the anime has Ranma liking to shout that when he does his volley of punches attack.
>>
>>265841446
Honestly, I think the anime version, where they found out about the water sensitivity first, and then they went to Tofu for his counter-pressure point technique, only for Genma to fuck things up by doing his usual tackle Ranma into the fishpond schtick, was a better flow. This just makes Tofu seem like a really bad deus ex machina.

Also, fun fact; say goodbye to Tofu, because he won't be showing up again! Takahashi decided he was a pointless character and never uses him again after this page. The anime takes pity and lets him come back for a couple of filler episodes.

I always figured it was done for the viewers; having Ranma's female form have red hair makes it immediately recognizable which form Ranma is in. It also works to make Ranma using his girl form as a disguise a little more plausible, at least when he's doing it on people who aren't familiar with his cursed form, and makes the Kunos' obliviousness to the two Ranmas being the same person seem slightly less ridiculous.

I like how the black hair in the manga sort of adds more continuity between the two forms and makes it more impressive how Rumiko's art so clearly distinguishes them just through the different faces and body types (yeah there's also the hair shine on the female form but that's easier to miss)

But I also like how the red hair in the anime is a bit more exotic and maybe helps add to why so many people are into her, plus it kinda gives the female form her own identity/personality unique to that form, or something. I can see arguments for making the forms too distinct as antithetical to how Ranma's meant to be the same person either way, but I mean hearing the different voices for each gender in the anime kind of adds to that impression already compared to the manga.

I probably like the red better because it just feels like it became iconic enough for the black to look off in colored images, but it's pretty interesting how the original manga seems pretty committed to all the major characters having black hair.

The main difference is that Ukyo would be all embarrassed about it while Nabiki just melt into it.

>Immediately following the end of the Japanese rule of Korea, on August 15, 1945, South Korea enacted the Law For Punishing Anti-National Deeds (반민족행위처벌법), later revised in 1948, in order to prevent their citizens from associating with anything Japanese related. This was followed with many other laws over the decades restricting the broadcast and distribution of records, videos, CDs, and games from outside the country. While the laws did not specify any specific country, the intent of the laws was primarily aimed at Japanese media
apparently south korea only began easing up on the censorship in 1998 (!) and it's STILL illegal to broadcast japanese music and TV via terrestrial signals

Ranma >>>> Ryoga >> Mousse >> Kuno

Ranma may be a mischievous trolling shit who hates losing and has a lot of self-esteem issues, but he's fundamentally a decent, reliable guy. He's incredibly loyal to anyone who he thinks is even remotely loyal to him, unless they have been actively screwing him over, and even then, he will usually do the noble thing and help them out.

Ryoga is pathetic. He spent at least a year chasing Ranma over a stupid bread duel, got cursed, and then immediately blamed it on Ranma. That Ranma turned out to genuinely be responsible is besides the point; he didn't know that until weeks later. There's also the P-chan thing, which is just its own flavor of pathetic. But buried deep under the melodrama, the entitlement issues and the desperation for affection is a guy who's genuinely loyal, brave and honorable.

Mousse is a scumbag. He's open and unrepentant about this fact. He literally *boasts* that he is happy to win an important duel by rigging it in his favor, and his entire thing in canon is that he's determined to murder Ranma to get Shampoo "back", ignoring that Shampoo didn't want Mousse YEARS before she ever met Ranma. He's less of a bumbling idiot than Ryoga, but Ryoga's consistently shown to be more honorable than him.

Tatewaki is a moron. He's arrogant, entitled, and self-absorbed to the point he literally never improves despite being the series' resident punching bag because he's too full of himself to admit he needs to get better. He's literally just Shutaro Mendo without Mendo's facade of being a respectable person covering up his faults. He's also hands down the single biggest pervert of the four male characters, as shown by his inability to pick between Akane or "the pigtailed girl" and his constant horndogging when presented with the latter. Out of the four, only Kuno has literally tried to rape the girl of his affections.
>>
>>265884118
well, when you think about there would have been a significant number of koreans who either outright collaborated with the japanese or did very well under their rule who'd have a vested interest in a pro-japan korea. plus they would have still had substantial political and economic power. the regime in the south had to contend with them plus the north which established its legitimacy on the communist party having fought the japanese during the entirety of the colonial period. in essence, the policy was "korea only, nothing dprk and nothing japanese" to shore up support, though this did paradoxically turn the south's culture into a hyper-cartoon version of the USA

I'm a woman who likes to self-insert as unwillingly locked female Ranma, in a vulnerable state and an identity crisis, getting fucked and ideally impregnated by the male cast (No Akanes Allowed)

On the same note, I think there's also similar stuff that could be done with Herb, either with HER stuck as a girl (with male Ranma?) or him in male form with locked female Ranma, but there's not a lot of that because he/she is a manga-only character for now. I think I actually prefer the anime, but this arc's obviously up my alley. I've never read a fic involving any of these scenarios with Herb but there must be something I just haven't seen. Female Herb especially is cute

>>265899170
>Why do you say that?

I mean people definitely think girl Ranma's hot, but
-Locked Ranma might come too close to feeling like trans/identity politics stuff for anons, even though that's not why I like it
-Even if people like female Ranma, they might not want to see her get knocked up by the male cast
-Even I have to admit it's a shitty way to treat Ranma and might feel "disrespectful" to the character, both in-universe and out. While part of the appeal for me is the psychological/identity issues it'd cause, with Ranma starting in a bad mental place and eventually reaching acceptance or even satisfaction, I can see how people would find that too disturbing or mean-spirited or whatever

It's weird because I don't like in canon when the characters (read: Akane) make light of Ranma's feelings about the curse as just a casual joke. I guess part of the appeal here is Ranma's angst about it being taken seriously when it's in a situation he can't escape.

Also controversial fic rec:

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4944651/1/The-Iris-Tales

This story's well known probably, but checks off most of what I wanna see in this scenario. I think the first chapter is probably the best written and can stand on its own if anyone just wants to read about Ranma getting locked and spiraling down

How tf do you guys conclude that this is shampoos father? In the context of this scene this dude can be a random visitor or a friend of the chinese guide and both are eating the stuff shampoo just delivered to them.

Like you guys said he doenst appear in the manga later on, so it must be a some random guy....

Never the less, there is potential for a father figure of shampoo to add aditional spice. (If he is/was shampoos father) Maybe in early drafts Rumiko made him THE actual everyones favorite old lingerine lover. So after more thoughts Rumiko maybe said, that a father who would potentionaly hunt for his daughters underware was a little too..... lets say..... risky. But it looks like Rumiko still wanted the old pervy char and voila mr. throwing fire cracker was born.

Hot take: I don't like Ranma and Ryoga's ki blasts
>>
>>265917105
Does it offend you because it is a ki blast and thus somehow less realistic than the other absurd stuff they pull off or is there something specific about their ki blasts that bothers you thematically?
>>
>>265917279
I just don't like how they look, they look more like shockwaves than anything else and despite being supposedly two different moves, they look the same.
Also the ki blast battle between Ranma and Ryoga looked retarded.
And finally, having two entire techniques just to scream 'This is the character's primordial flaw you're supposed to laugh at them for' is just not funny to me, it's WAY 'in your face' to the point it get obnoxious.
My complaints have nothing to do with realism, Ranma can summon tornadoes after all and I do like that move.

>>
>>265917851
Yeah, it's weird. He's got the rapid-fire fisticuffs move (which only the anime treats as a special technique of the "calling your attacks" variety, dubbing it the Kachu Tenshin Amaguriken), he's got the Hiryu Shoten Ha and all the one-off variants he makes, and he's got the Moko Takabashi. And technically the Umisenken school, but he refuses to use that again.
>>
>>265919061
>And technically the Umisenken school, but he refuses to use that again.
The entire Senken thing was retarded, Genma feeling guilt for the first time in the entire manga because some dumbass killed himself out of sheer dumbassery made no sense.

>>265919061
>>265919234
To be fair, the Umisenken is kinda shit for everything except countering the Yamasenken
>>
>>265917502
I think it is pretty funny, honestly. I always thought of Ranma's tornado move as his signature move anyway.
>>
>>265919499
It shows up a bit late to be a signature move
>>
>>265918392
Why?
>>
>>265919487
That's what I've said! The Umisenken's got that stealth technique, but that's really all it has; 90% of what we see Ranma invent for it* is literally just counter-techniques for the Yamasenken. Against anybody else, the Umisenken's a pretty crappy style.

The original version made by Genma is probably better, but we have no idea what that version looks like.

*Because, keep in mind, Genma didn't actually TEACH Ranma the Umisenken, he told Ranma that it could be used to beat the Yamasenken, told him the basic philosophical underpinnings, and then beat Ranma up with the Umisenken's most basic bitch move, then Ranma invented all the other moves we see on his own from scratch.
>>
>>265921773
>then Ranma invented all the other moves we see on his own from scratch.
I think we're supposed to see it as Ranma figuring out all the true moves just from that.
>>
>>265921773
I'll never understand why so many fics treat the Umisenken as some absolute 'I win' overpowered mode for Ranma. Sure it was cool how hard he countered the Yamasenken but those moves really don't do shit outside of just that.
At least the Nekoken was legit impressive on an upfront level AND was legit used as a power up in like one niche situation IIRC (could be mixing it up with a video game).
>>
>>265922513

>>
>>265923456
Okay I just looked the scene up because generally I don't like it and Ranma/Akane interactions aren't what I like the series for. She:

>slaps him in the back of the head when he's sitting around depressed and taunts him for leaving himself open
>makes fun of him for "pouting" at being kind of sexually assaulted and says he's not a man
>laughs at him (yeah he told her to do it, and it might be a translation thing since while I have the Japanese version I don't care to look it up now, but the phrasing "if you think it's so funny..." implies that yes, she does think it's funny even if she's trying to be comforting)
>she says it "doesn't make any difference" if Ranma gets a first kiss he doesn't want, but then acts like a total hypocrite and constantly slaps Ranma around when the same thing happens to her, except it was clearly with no malice or anything on Ranma's part
>makes fun of him for "letting himself" get kissed so easily and says he hasn't trained enough (Akane would probably ask a rape victim what she was wearing)
>continues to make fun of him for leaving himself open
>says he wouldn't have the guts to kiss her

And yeah yeah, I know, canonically they're meant to be attracted to each other and this is just a more extreme version of tsundere antics with sexual tension etc, but typically Akane acts way worse to Ranma than he does to her and this is just one example since it happens constantly and never really lets up

I know I probably sound like some '90s-Ranma-fandom whiny Akane hater and I honestly don't want to, I really got into Ranma with the impression I would like Akane and DID at times when she was interacting with anyone but Ranma, but she just kinda sucks dick. Once I noticed that she's only """nice""" to him in situations where he's somehow weakened/humiliated and she's only kinda getting off on being the stronger one in the way she treats him, I can't NOT notice it

I admit pic related is dumb; it's just the first Akane Hate one I found
>>
>>265923818

Mainly because the Umisenken gets this big build up and, on the surface, it looks really impressive - super speed and virtual invisibility isn't anything to sneeze at, after all! It's only when you look closer that you realize the techniques proper (because a lot of people mistake the stealth move for the entirety of the Umisenken itself) are largely made up of technique-counters to the Yamasenken's techniques.

In contrast, the Nekoken is literally called out as a pointless move that only an idiot would try to teach someone. It's extremely difficult for Ranma to enter the berserker state even when he actively WANTS to go into it, and once he does go berserk, he's left with the mental abilities of a cat. Which makes him an erratic, unpredictable MORON. Let's not forget: in the manga, KUNO immediately figures out he can beat Nekoken-Ranma by throwing him a toy to play with. That's like... one of the most embarrassing defeats in Ranma's history.
>>

These arguments always seemed like bullshit to me. The vast majority of Akane's violence is either due to Ranma's own provocations or misunderstandings where her actions would be understandable. Of course that's not exactly the case here but it's important to remember that this is the exception, rather than the rule, and it's not like Ranma hasn't also shit on her out of nowhere.
>>
>>265934669
>Akane has massive overreaction and is retarded but it's Ranma's fault
That's not how you make a character compeling.
>>
>>265934669
Honestly as of these early chapters (I've seen more of the series than this, manga and anime, I just don't remember every single time Akane's gotten pissed later because it happens so much) I still don't find her actions understandable the vast majority of the time. Like I understand getting pissed in certain situations when Ranma insults her, but just fucking punching him crosses a line and it doesn't help that the earliest chapters give it too-realistic consequences, like Ranma losing consciousness or Ranma going to a doctor who comments about the actual lasting physical injuries that Akane inflicted, that take away from it just feeling like "haha funny slapstick" the way it might feel with other characters' violence. In this volume especially we just see her punch first and ask questions later, or not at all, a bunch, and often in a really hypocritical way.

And like I don't at all have a problem with characters in a comedy being violent or hypocrites, but the thing is it's clear we're meant to be on Akane's side or find her cute/likable/sympathetic and to me it just doesn't come off at all because I'm on Ranma's side more often than not. At least the rest of the cast's bullshit isn't presented with the expectation that you'll be on their side.

I was watching a first-season episode recently and it had one instance of Akane Violence that felt justified... and it was a fucking filler episode, so not in the manga that's supposedly the most sympathetic portrayal of Akane.
>Ranma and Akane are talking for some reason about the episode plot
>Ranma randomly shits on Akane for being ugly and untalented and then sings a fucking original song of his own composition about Akane being a fatass
>Akane gets pissed off and throws him into the wall before storming out of the room
>Ranma's kinda hurt/annoyed but clearly not badly and gets up a few seconds later

That at least had Ranma going way over the top; it felt deserved. But in the manga it usually doesn't.

>But in the manga it usually doesn't.
Because it's written by a woman so it's way more biased toward the girl and less funny. The author clearly didn't get why Ataru getting shat on worked but not Ranma.
I don't know what's up with women comedians and suddenly losing 90% of their talents the second a man / woman interaction shows up.

the signage on the building in panel one says
>[...] 承ります (uketamawarimasu "humbly receive")
>[...] 小・看破 ([incomplete word] · kanpa "seeing through")
>[...] 種塗装・レタリング ([incomplete word] tosō · retaringu "painting · lettering")
>野坂 [...] (nosaka [...] "nosaka [...]")
the signage on the telephone pole in panel one says
>火木土 (ka-moku-do "tue-thurs-sat")
>燃えないゴミ (moenai gomi "non-burnable trash")
>水曜日 (suiyōbi "wednesday")
the signage on the telephone pole in panel three says 吉川ふとん店 (yoshikawa futon-ten "yoshikawa cushion store")

I think Kid Goku and Ranma would make a great duo.
And ironically, I don't think Bulma would care much for Ranma beyond the initial 'he's cute'.
>>
Hot take: I'm not into crossovers where Ranma get exclusively with girls from the other show.

Ranma>Ryoga=Mouse>Kuno

Ranma is just a really good MC, one of the best Takahashi has ever done. He's hilarious and weird and mean spirited and constantly over the top but still cool and sympathetic at the end of the day.

Ryoga is the most fleshed out character in the manga after Ranma, he's stupid and pathetic but also funny and likable deep-down. He really should have committed to his pity girlfriend by the end, but you could say that about almost every Ranma character.

Mousse I just personally like a lot. He was an instant favorite of mine from his first chapter, I really dig his design and his ridiculous fighting style and even though he's at least as big a jerk as Ryoga is if not more he gets shit on so much by the manga and even the fanbase he still feels like an underdog. I like that even late in the manga when it goes full shonen adventure his entire fighting style is still being a huge cheater. Also his unrequited love for Shampoo still feels more real to me than Ryogas equally unrequited puppy crush on Akane.

Kuno is Kuno, he's fun in short doses but he has zero depth not only as a character but even as a fighter which is why all of his chapters are pure slapstick. He's also not even meant to be slightly likable, his role is to be a punching bag 90% of the time and he's good at that much.

I like the concept of a kendo dude in a fighting manga but beyond that Kuno is a nothing burger IMO

the character on the telephone pole is 文 "text;" i have no idea why that word would be on a telephone pole, especially in isolation

>>265841216
the character on the whatever-that-is in panel three is 闘 "conflict;" it's not a word on its own

>>265841240
the character on the shop in panel one is 囍 "double happiness;" it's more of an ornamental symbol than a proper character, though, and there aren't any words written with it

>>265841907
the character over the front door is 猫 (neko "cat")
the black sign by the alley is mostly illegible; the fourth character is probably 町 "town"
the sign on the telephone pole says 梅田 (umeda); i can't read the rest with only half of each character visible
the character on the telephone pole is 文 "text" again
the white sign by the alley says [...] 度1でも火を消す習慣 ([...]do ichi de mo hi o kesu shūkan); i can't figure out the first character, rendering the first column unintelligible, but the second and third say "habits to put out fire"

>>265842098
the taped-up sign in the first panel says 生ゴミは朝に出してください (namagomi wa asa ni dashite kudasai "please put kitchen trash out in the morning")

>>265842208
the doormat says 熱烈歓迎 (netsuretsu kangei "ardent welcome")

>>265842499
the character on sōun's fan is 祭 "festival"

>>265842785
the visible character on the horizontal stall sign in panel two is 焼 "roast"
the vertical signs say たこ焼き (takoyaki "takoyaki") and わたあめ (wataame "cotton candy"), though the き and たあ aren't visible

i think that's everything

I found the pages in question, in chapter 243 and pages 144-145 of the 2-in-1 volumes and while I understand reading it that way, I don't really think that was the intention. I feel he simply changed to boy form to show that he's being serious rather than it actually being a significant powerup. I don't know which boulder pages you mean. You may be 100% correct, but I feel more people would try to force Ranma to fight in girl form if it was that big a deal and textually, it seems vague.

I feel like she's supposed to be cute/likable/sympathetic DESPITE her violent outbursts.

Thank you so much for this! I save these threads as a sort of archive, so I hope you know your work is appreciated. I almost want to make an annotated version of these, but I've never typeset or done anything like that before.
