Since they don’t really do a whole lot to establish Mari’s character at any point, she just ends up being a second Asuka, essentially. She’s a second female pilot who embraces piloting rather than shying from it in contrast with Shinji’s ambivalence to his role. They are both even introduced to Shinji by falling from the sky. So since they are both basically filling the same role, to give to one takes from the other, and they ultimately make each other redundant. So in the end you end up with two partially developed characters instead of a single decently developed one.
